COMMUNITY CELEBRATES ARMED FORCES CROWDS gathered in Penistone on Saturday June 24 to celebrate Armed Forces Day.

Penistone Armed Forces Day was a military arena style show with marching bands and public displays. One of the highlights of the day was a World War II 25lb field gun demonstration firing black powder blanks. Guest of honour, veteran Gunner Eddie Robinson from the South Notts Hussars Royal Artillery, fired the gun. Eddie, 93, was part of a six-man gun team and was re-assigned to the forward attachments deployed on D-Day and landed on Gold Beach. The artillery successfully liberated Caen and worked their way through the Falaise gap up to Belgium and fought in the battle at LaPanne. They then moved through Belgium and into Holland. Before reaching Germany the unit was posted back to England at the end of 1944 when General Montgomery disbanded the regiment. This was the first time that Eddie would have got this close to a field gun since the war. After firing the shot, Eddie said: “I fired that in the 1940s, in France during the war. So I’ve had a good crack on these 25-pounders. They’re good guns. And fast.” Also in attendance were World War II veterans, MP Angela Smith, MP Dan Jarvis, Mayor of Penistone Rodger Hinchcliffe, Mayor of Barnsley Cllr Jeff Ennis, Lord Mayor of Sheffield Cllr Anne Murphy and the Deputy Lieutenant John Hayward. Other displays and activities included a World War I re-enactment, a Civil War camp, military vehicles and veterans associations. A Spitfire plane also flew past.

As part of their Entry Level Certificate science course, students were given the opportunity to look after chickens, closely supervised by teaching and support “They have had a chance to hold the chicks carestaff. fully and help with the It is hoped that the students that took part will gain enrichment from animal care which prepares then for the responsibility of caring for living organism.

construction of their new home now located in the middle of the science prep room. “So far the project has been very successful and the students have enjoyed it. They were a little upset about the fact that not all the eggs developed successfully but a success rate of seven out of eight was really good and dealing

with setbacks like this is a useful life skill.” In the future there are plans for the students to build a larger run so that the chickens can be kept outside. Once the chickens begin to lay eggs, the eggs can be sold and students will see that the money must then go back into the care of the hens.

The students will also learn cooperation skills as a group caring for the hens including feeding and mucking out. The project has also brought out parenting instincts in both our chief technician Miss Atkin and our head of department Mr. Forrest!

First of all they helped maintain the incubator during the incubation period. They helped with turning the eggs to stop the developing embryo sticking to the egg wall. Mr Deakin, Entry Level Course Teacher, told Look Local: “They watched one of the chicks hatch out of the egg which they particularly enjoyed. “Mr Forrest showed them an embryo that

Water safety warning following recent rise in temperature

River flows can be unpredictable and water is often deeper, colder and faster than expected. People should enjoy water safely in swimming pools or safer specialist facilities instead, officers warn.

“It can be tempting to cool off in the summer months, but stick to a swimming pool. Hundreds of people drown each year in the UK and places like rivers, lakes or flooded quarries are completely unsuitable Area Manager Steve for swimming as they Helps, Head of Preven- hide a number of hidtion and Protection at den dangers.” South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said, ““We regu- Darren Lynch, Regional larly receive 999 calls Raw Water Manager at in the summer about Yorkshire Water said, people getting into diffi- “Reservoirs may look culty in water, so it’s only tempting to take a swim a matter of time before in but they can be killers someone’s safety is really and today’s practice resput at risk unless people cue will hopefully raise awareness of these risks listen to our advice. amongst young people.

Sprinklers to be fitted in all Sheffield Council tower blocks SHEFFIELD City Council have started a series of meetings with tower block residents and have announced that it will be fitting sprinklers in all 24 blocks.

FOLLOWING the recent hot snap, firefighters are urging the public not to swim in lakes and reservoirs.

Around 400 people needlessly drown in the UK every year and thousands more suffer injury, some life changing, through near-drowning experiences. South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue works closely with communities to educate them of the dangers surrounding open waters – a key part of their prevention work.

Local News

The authority has already spent millions on fire safety in its council homes and improvement works have been carried out over the last five years. The authority had always intended to review its policy on sprinklers later this year, at the end of that five year programme, but is bringing the commitment forward to provide extra reassurance to residents.

Cold water shock can lead to hyperventilation, increased blood pressure, breathing difficulties and heart attacks plus water temperatures remain just as cold in summer as in winter.” Over 400 people die in the water every year in the UK, and firefighters are urging people to follow some basic rules to stay safe. The dangers of open water are: · The water can be much deeper than you expect

· Rivers, lakes, canals and reservoirs are much colder than you think · Open water can carry water borne diseases, pollutants and bacteria · Cold water dramatically affects your ability to swim · There may be hidden currents, which can pull you under the water · You don’t know what lies beneath, like pieces of rubbish or reeds which can trap or injure you

Councillor Jayne Dunn, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Community Safety

at Sheffield City Council, said: “We have done a huge amount of work in recent years to make sure our tower blocks are safe. The cladding systems are fireproof and comply with building and planning regulations. “We had always intended to review our position on sprinklers later this year. But as an extra reassurance to residents, I am today announcing this has been brought forward and we will be fitting sprinklers in all 24 blocks.” The council will start consulting on a block by block basis later this year with tenants and leaseholders. There is already one tower block with sprinklers – Callow Mount – which

was retro-fitted in 2011, as part of work with the British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue. Twenty one of the council’s 24 tower blocks have metal cladding. This is fire proof as the insulation is mineral and rock wool, with fire breaks at the floor and party walls. This creates a fire-proof box around each flat to the external structure to prevent the spread of fire to other flats. The other three are brickworkclad and designed to operate in the same way as the other 21 but in these cases have a separate metal fire barrier installed.

Wortley Hall car show ON Sunday July 2, the Rotary Club of Wortley will be holding their annual vintage and classic car show at Wortley Hall. In addition to the usual spectacular lineup of cars, motorbikes, tractors and military vehicles, the event will once again welcome members and their cars from various Jaguar and Ford owners clubs. There will be other attractions on the day, including a Tiger Moth biplane fly-by, an aerial display, a strolling jazz band, craft stalls, face painting and a bouncy castle for the children.

A raffle will be run on the day with prizes including a Samsung tablet and a Milwaukee impact driver. All proceeds raised go to Sheffield Children’s Hospital and other local charities.

Swimmer makeS waveS in run up to Special olympicS A SHEFFIELD swimmer is making waves in the run up to the Special Olympics Great Britain National Summer Games and training harder than ever in a bid to win more medals.

letes are competing in 21 different sports – more than the last event, due to the range of sporting facilities in Sheffield. Megan’s dad, Robert Hattersley, coaches Megan and is head coach of both the Yorkshire and Humberside Special Olympics swimming team and Sheffield Otters, a swimming club for people with a learning disability.

“When I’m in the water I feel free”. That’s the effect swimming has on 27-year-old Special Olympics athlete and wheelchair user, Megan Hattersley, of Wadsley Bridge. Megan has moderate learning and physical disabilities, autistic tendencies, a rare genetic condition called tubular sclerosis and epilepsy.

Robert said: “The beauty of the Special Olympics is that they’re graded in times so, no matter what people’s ability, they all have a chance of winning.

But while dealing with these obstacles makes everyday life a challenge, she’s determined not to let it stop her going for gold at the Games – which are coming to Sheffield this August.

“The atmosphere at the Games is always brilliant and it’ll be even better at Ponds Forge. It’s a superb venue with one of the best pools in Europe in my opinion.”

This will be the fourth time Megan, who trained with the GB squad before her illness became too severe, has entered the Games. She’s already won 10 medals, including four gold ones, and is now training harder than ever to win in her home city with friends and family cheering from the poolside.

Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “We are incredibly proud to be hosting the Special Olympics in Sheffield this year, and can’t wait to be part of it. “It’s thanks to Sheffield’s outstanding sporting facilities that more events are being hosted this year. I hope to see everyone at the opening ceremony at Bramall Lane and cheering the athletes on at the events, especially our local ones.”

Megan will be joined by 2,600 of her fellow athletes from all over the UK, who will be in Sheffield from August 7 to 12 to compete in the country’s largest multi-sports event for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

Tickets to all sporting events are free and tickets for a spectacular opening ceremony at Bramall Lane on August 8 will soon be on sale.

“I can feel trapped in my chair but when I’m in the water I feel free – like I can be whoever I want to be,” Megan explains.

There is also an Activity Festival at the English Institute of Sport on Wednesday August 9 to give people with a learning disability aged 11 years and over the chance to play a range of sports, including tennis, cricket, basketball, athletics, boccia and golf.

“I think it’s better to try and fail than not to try at all so even if people say ‘you can’t do it’ I want to prove them wrong. “There’s one thing you can’t take away from someone and that’s their passion. When you’re competing it’s your moment – and I can’t wait.”

Neil Rattenbury, 58, has been a keen photographer since he was a teenager and is especially interested in capturing wildlife. Mammals Around the World – A Photographic Diary covers three trips that he’s made, each with specific targets in mind.

“They were all very special to me,” explains Neil, who was raised in Todwick but has lived in Penistone and Stocksbridge.

Neil has a more traditional approach to his hobby and has only stopped using 35mm film relatively recently. Despite going digital, his shots still appear as they were taken and he doesn’t use any software to touch them up. The book isn’t just photographs, Neil has also included notes from his visits. “I travel alone when I go and it gives me time to make notes in the evening. I just write down what I see and what I hear. It’s my first venture into writing but if people

are interested I could do another. I have a niece with an English degree so I asked her to read through it all.”

In what is the biggest investment in tennis in parks for any city in the country, courts at nine sites have been created, or else brought back into use after becoming, in many cases, derelict and unplayable. Parks Tennis, a community interest company, now manages the sites at Graves, Thorncliffe, Forge Valley School, Westfield School, Concord, High Hazels, Hillsborough, Millhouses and Weston Park. This agreement with Parks Tennis follows an 18-month-long pilot programme in Sheffield which has seen more than 18,000 tennis court bookings made and hundreds of coaching sessions delivered during that period of time.

The new tennis programme is for all players, regardless of age or ability, and offers many benefits including: • Online booking to reserve courts in advance and avoid wasted trips or waiting around • Low ‘pay and play’ court prices, with concessions for under 16s and over 60s • Great value Sheffield Parks Tennis Passes for occasional, regular or frequent players, from just £1 a court all year round (and even less for children in the summer holidays) • Low-cost community coaching for juniors and adults, including family-friendly Tennis For Free sessions on Saturdays at Hillsborough Park • Local Tennis League pairing people up for friendly matches in the park

Sheffield lifesaver set to come home The City of Sheffield lifeboat will be officially unveiled by dignatories – including the Lord Mayor of Sheffield - at the museum next month. From July 23, and throughout the school summer holidays, guided onboard tour sessions will run. The lifeboat was originally fundraised for by the people of Sheffield, with the cost being met by the 198788 Sheffield Lifeboat Appeal and a significant bequest from Mrs Mary Mable Walker. The loan of the vessel provides the chance for the boat to go back to the city which made it possible while ensuring the RNLI can continue to support the museum in maintaining and displaying the vessel effectively.

LANDLOCKED Sheffield isn’t traditionally a place for lifeboat unveilings but it’s fair to say there’s nowhere more deserving of the city’s newest – and possibly biggest - tourist attractions. Weighing in at 26 tons, the City of Sheffield lifeboat saved 650 lives in a fifteen year career that started way back in 1989. Kind-hearted local residents raised a staggering £435,000 towards the vessel’s £560,000 costs in the late 1980s.

At 47 foot long, the state-of-the-art vessel was designed to sail straight through towering waves and could reach a maximum speed of 17.6 knots. The City of Sheffield lifeboat is set to be the newest exhibit at the city’s National Emergency Services Museum who’ve teamed up with the RNLI to ensure the city that helped launch it gets to share its history. Still in complete working order – visitors will soon be able to board the awe-inspir-

Matt Wakefield, CEO of the museum said: “The Emergency Services Museum has a proud history of caring for historic emergency vehicles and we are delighted to be receiving a modern RNLI lifeboat to display – especially one with such a connection to the city. We’re looking forward to inviting the public to the exhibition and running sessions on the lifeboat’s remarkable stories and the inspiring people who served on her.’

ing vessel and get an appreciation of its Jonathan Clark, RNLI volunteer incredible career. Coxswain of Poole lifeboat says: “The Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent City of Sheffield was a faithful servant named the Lifeboat City of Sheffield on during her 15 years on service here 28 July 1989 at Whitby Lifeboat Station. at Poole lifeboat station; we are one She has also served at Ramsgate, Hartle- of the busiest coastal stations so she pool and Sennen Cove before finding her was kept active. was very much part of the Poole quay scenery and photographed a lot by the holiday makers. ‘In 2004, I had the proud honour of taking the wheel and escorting the RNLI’s patron, Her Majesty The Queen after she had opened the Lifeboat College and in December 2013 we celebrated the City of Sheffield’s 25th birthday with a special greeting sent by the Worshipful Mayor of Sheffield. We have a good few memories, memorable ‘shouts’ and the camaraderie part that the boat played within the crews and community life that revolves around a lifeboat station. It was a very sad day when she left us and she will always be a part of our heritage. However, I am very pleased that she will be returning home to South Yorkshire and look forward to visiting her there’.” David Welton, RNLI Heritage Manager adds: ‘This is an exciting move for the RNLI as the loan will not only teach people about the City of Sheffield’s wonderful past, but also how to stay safe by the water - all the more important in our inland cities, where communities are not always as familiar with the dangers they may find at the coast. ‘Lifeboats make the work of the RNLI possible, so we also hope that the chance to explore one will inspire some future lifeboat crew, who will continue the organisation’s legacy of saving lives at sea. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able

A cheery smile, a heart of gold, The dearest sister the world could hold, Loving and kind in all her ways, Upright and just to the end of her days, Sincere and true in heart and mind, Beautiful memories she has left behind.

I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation

All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

Find owner of a prayer book

David Ogle, High Green volunteer

Reply to Vic Bowden’s waffle (22nd June issue 962) First you fail to declare an interest, being one of the main decision makers on this clear two-part stitch up to the community of High Green. The contract of sale clearly states that the net proceeds of the sale be used for the benefit of the community of High Green, not the Parish. You know this, you helped approve the contract. How you helped spend £12,101.10 was to pay off a public works loan, secured against the parish council offices. Where you agreed that doing so was of no benefit to High Green, but you and the rest of the Lib Dems did it anyway, with full support from Labour. This freed up precept money, that was paying off the loan, for grants, none of which reached High Green.

Misunderstanding over Council funds

Your Letters

My uncle, Philip Wathen, who passed away last year, was a long time resident in High Green.

The solicitors dealing with his will have today released his possessions to me. Amongst them is ‘My Prayer Book for Men and Boys’ and inside the front cover there is written St. John’s Church, I’m sorry Victoria Bowden but your comments just Chapeltown and under that it says ‘Presented to don’t add up. I attend all Ecclesfield Parish Council John Hattersley on his confirmation on Sunday meetings and video record every one of them unlike 4th June 1961’ and then is signed by the Vicar but I yourself who turns up once in a blue moon. can’t make out the signature. I’m one of the members of the public that you’re I wondered if John Hattersley or his family were saying are still wilfully misunderstanding the still resident in the area and if so they would like Councils’ lawful actions. to contact me through Look Local to get back this I completely see why you would say that because Prayer Book into the family. you’re trying to protect the Lib Dems’ decision that Many thanks, you were a party to at the time. Pam Turner, Oughtibridge. You stated, “the purchase of the old High Green

Library from the Sheffield City Council,” and that, “the initial purchase used funds from the Will Angela Smith now serve? precept which all parishioners pay,” but I find it strange that, having looked at the deeds of the old library obtained from the Land Registry, it states Dear Sir/ Madam, “transferred” not “purchased” and, therefore, not On June 8 this year Angela Smith was returned as A parish asset paid for equally by precept payers, sold and no sale. that also has a rental income, this again frees up You then state, “therefore, the profit belongs to our local MP. She increased her vote from 19,691 precept cash that no doubt will be handed out in the parish as a whole”. I’m sorry but the legal deed to 22,807, an impressive result. The Conservative grants and again I’ve no doubt any of those grants states for, “the High Green Community,” not the candidate increased that party’s vote from 12,986 to 21,485 an even more impressive result. This cut will reach the High Green community. Parish as a whole. Angela Smith’s majority from 6,723 to only 1,233. Now Labour with counsellor Zoe Sykes leading the charge, intend to spend the rest of the net proceeds of the sale (£14,459.90) with full Lib Dem support, on improving the parish council offices, yes including the room for rent.

As for this rental room being used in the main by High Green residents, you just made that up, you have no idea where the users live, but even if all the 86 users were from High Green, which they are not, this room is a parish funded asset for the whole parish, High Green has two community assets that are available to rent are under funded and under used, that this parish asset undercuts in rental charges.

You also say, “the capital receipt cannot be put into the grants pot,” and you are right on that point, but what you failed to mention was that you and your fellow Parish Councillors paid off the whole Parish Council Loan of £12,101.10 with the capital receipt thus freeing up £2,300 per year that you and your fellow Councillors could give away in grants to the whole Parish conveniently forgetting the High Green community again.

You state that the parish council cannot spend money on things it does not own, what utter tosh. Does the parish own the new Thorncliffe Leisure Centre? I think not, yet the parish has agreed to give it £25/30,000 a year for the next 25/30 years.

You also stated, “It cannot be used to buy or improve a building in another village in the parish,” but the So, I now ask Angela Smith will she vote on parish building is not in the High Green Ward but behalf of these 44,292 constituents in upcoming Parliamentary votes or will she abstain or vote the Thorncliffe Ward . against as she has made her own views known in You also stated, “The vast majority of people the past with regards to Brexit and these would who book this room are from High Green,” but I appear to be at odds to these 44,292 constituents. find your vast majority comment laughable and unfounded as I and others have asked the Parish The demographics within Stocksbridge and Council on many occasions for nearly a year now Penistone has/is changing as in the past a Conservative candidate has never been able to run to prove that comment. such a close second in previous elections. Why are they refusing to give this information out? You also state, “Ecclesfield Parish Council is not If she chooses to ignore the wishes of these 44,292 allowed to spend money in parks it doesn’t own.” constituents then at the next election, whenever If that’s true why do they give grants out to groups that may be, she may find herself voted out of office that councillors are committee members of to as I believe that Stocksbridge and Penistone could now be classed as a marginal seat. spend on parks owned by Sheffield City Council?

So to sum up, Labour and the Lib Dems found a way to launder this money, so it could be carved up as grants for mates in good cause groups, none of it benefitting the community of High Green. I do not think it is wasted energy to make sure every member of High Green community know about this blatant Labour Lib Dem stitch up.

As for the Friends groups, we had the Friends of Chapletown and High Green Parks, but even though they have had parish grants and £100,000s in other grants in the last ten years, not one penny has reached High Green parks and when this issue was raised they, this month, drop High Green from the group.

Angela Smith was elected on the back of the Labour manifesto which supports leaving the ECJ, customs union etc and in total she now represents 44,292 constituents who voted for Brexit backing parties, if people had wanted to thwart Brexit then they could have voted Liberal.

Hawks narrow loss against league leaders O u l ton R a i d e r s 1 6 Sheffield Hawks 12 SHEFFIELD Hawks were narrowly defeated after an exciting and close match away in Leeds. The first five minutes saw no scores at all with both sides defensively solid throughout. However, in a 10 minute spell, Oulton scored three quick tries, converting two. The 16-0 scoreline looked ominous but the Hawks responded well and for the rest of the match were by far the better side. Two try saving tackles from Bailey Thompson and tackle of the match from Harr y Scott ensured that Oulton did not score again for the remainder of the match. To m G r i f f i t h t o o k advantage of Raiders rush defence to step back against the grain and score under the posts. Pat Wakefield converted and for the rest of the half Hawks dominated. But for a couple of decisions going against them, Hawks would have scored again. Oulton remained rattled in the second half. The second Hawks try was scored after a set piece kick, Bailey Thompson collecting on the line and crashing over. Ha r r y S c o t t a d d e d t he c onve rs i on an d Hawks seemed set for a fant ast ic w in. But a further try was mystifyingly not awarded by the referee.

Positives from defeat for firsts - seconds win STOCKSBRIDGE first XI were back in action as they entertained league leaders Parkhead at Bracken Moor.

The toss was lost by captain Pete Broomhead and Stocksbridge were made to field first. Joe Hibbert and Jake Vickers opened the bowling and tested the Parkhead opening batsmen but Luke Davis and Liam Grayson formed a neither could find the break through. deadly partnership for the second team The opening batsmen batted with patience and didn’t give much away which frustrated Hibbert and Vickers. With the score at 53-0, Ben Cherry came into the attack and removed the opener for 12 with Jack Murfin taking a brilliant diving catch at slip. It was a lift the 1st needed as not much had gone their way in the innings. However Parkhead began building a creditable score as a partnership of 95 for the third wicket took them to 148-1.

He removed the Parkhead number three for 30 and then in consecutive balls removed the number four for a golden duck, with Dave Smith taking a brilliant catch behind the stumps. The big wicket of the Parkhead captain was next to fall with Tomlinson removing him for 87 with Ben Cherry taking a good catch on the boundary. Parkhead dug in and scored some vital runs, to finish on 212-8 off their 46 overs. Tomlinson was pick of the bowlers with 4-19 off six overs. The first XI bowlers came back

This started the collapse as captain Broomhead and Cherry were removed without troubling the score, leaving Stocksbridge 13-3. It was Dave Smith who fought back, frustrating the Parkhead bowlers and freely scoring runs from the bad balls. However they couldn’t find that key partership, Joe Hibbert came in at eight and supported Smith with score at 74-6. The
