HUNDREDS OF BIKERS GATHER FOR LOCAL’S ‘LAST RIDE’ HUNDREDS of bikers answered the call to turn up for a local man’s funeral on Saturday. Sam Pickering, who was just 20 when he died in a motorcycle accident on April 16, was a member of the ‘Crazy Crew’ motorcycle group and his friends had called for as many bikers as possible to get involved in the ‘last ride’ which gathered at Fox Valley on Saturday morning. The long line of motorcycles then joined the funeral hearse before making their way to Grenoside Crematorium for the service.

This will be one of the many community events over the weekend in honour of Jo Cox MP, who was tragically murdered a year ago. The whole endeavour is jointly organised with the Ecclesfield Village Heritage Reminiscence Group, itself an offshoot of the successful Ecclesfield Civil Parish Archiving Project. The Group usually meets at 3pm on the last Wednesday of the month, except August or December; however, the next meeting will be on May 24.

said Graham, who performed both acoustic sets, duets with co-organiser Kate and a gig with his band Citation. “Whilst we might not be able to persuade the Tour de Yorkshire race to come through Stocksbridge again for a few more years, we certainly can recreate the community spirit we saw on Sunday. “Hundreds of people turned out to pack the streets in support of local musicians all day long and there was such a good feeling right through the town. I’ve spoken to a number of people including local politicians and we agree that it would be brilliant to recreate something like the Tour de Yorkshire music festival event again and make it an annual fixture.”
Guest presenter, TV actor Rik Makarem said “Stocksbridge deserve the bragging rights for creating and capturing the very essence of Tour de Yorkshire, entertaining the crowds and creating the carnival atmosphere Yorkshire deserved. What a joy to be a part of it”. Discussions are now underway between organisers and funders to investigate the likelihood of future events. “This event showed there’s a real appetite for live music and entertainment which is suitable for all the family,” added Graham Lindley. “The atmosphere was fabulous and we hope we can build on its success. It’s brilliant to see the community come together like this. I think it did everyone a lot of good.”

BARNSLEY College Sports Academy female footballers are celebrating silverware success after beating Brighton, Hove and Sussex Sixth Form College 6-2 in the Association of Colleges National Cup Final. The final was held at Walsall Football Club, where hat tricks from Amy Woodruff and Brittany Sanderson put the game to bed. Amy was awarded Player of the Match by the officials from the English Colleges Football Association for her outstanding performance. The success cemented a treble win for the female team who have won the Association of Colleges (AoC) Yorkshire and Humber League, the
Association of Colleges National Cup and the Komm Mit International Copa Maresme Football Tournament in the past year. Rikki Paylor, the Sports Academy female team coach, said: “The attitude and professionalism of the team this year has been impressive. “They have worked extremely hard throughout the season to progress and get better as individuals and as a squad.” Barnsley College’s Sports Academy is open to talented sports students on any college course. Stocksbridge Town Council The Town Council would like to acknowledge the huge success of the Tour de Yorkshire 2017. The day saw record crowds turn out for the finale to the event, finishing in Fox Valley. Stocksbridge, Bolsterstone and Deepcar together with the surrounding areas were put firmly on the map with the event being covered on media worldwide.
Sheffield Hawks 12 – 44 Lindley Swifts ARLFC HAWKS under 16s were up against a very well drilled and superb Swifts team. The first half showed why the Swifts lead their league, one above Hawks, and how the smallest of errors can lead to tries conceded. The Hawks side, with new players and a new coach, appeared to be overwhelmed by the power and pace of Lindley Swifts and conceded tries regularly throughout the first half. However the second half saw why the potential of this team is so high. Hawks outscored Swifts
and scored two excellent tries through Reuben Kateregga and Will Burns. Passes started to find their range and Tom Kerr and Ryan Pellegrina were only just halted from scoring. Tackling in the middle was ferocious and at no point did Hawks shirk the workload. Burns, Harry Scott and Kateregga in particlulra ran good lines throughout. Jack Ryan was his usual unstoppable self and the graft of
Robert Harden, Pat Wakefield, Pellegrina and newcomer Saul Hinchliffe all started to make yards. Much can be taken as a positive from this game and although the result was a loss the second half performance showed that Hawks can still mix it with any side in their league, or the one above. Hawks ended the match on the front foot, had worn out Swifts in the second half and had the grit and belief to lift their heads and fight hard in the second half.
The Town Council would like to express its sincere thanks to members of its community including residents, local community, sports groups, businesses and local schools together with visitors to the area for the part each one played. Whether it be providing entertainment or facilities or just turning up to spectate. The crowds were amazing with no adverse comments to report. A huge thank you is extended to Mark Dransfield and all at Dransfield Properties Ltd, without whom the event would never have arrived in our area. The management and staff at Dransfields worked tremendously hard, catering for all ages to create a fantastic spectacle and ensuring that the whole communtiy benefitted from the Tour. Once again thank you from the Town Council to all involved in the day which highlighted that Stocksbridge can certainly put on a show! Here’s hoping that future events will ride through our area.

It’s not too late to make a will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:
Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able
to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation

Bell ringing PRIVATE David Ivor Brearley will be remembered by a special centenary memorial peal to be rung at St Marys Bolsterstone on Sunday May 14 from 12.30pm onwards. David Ivor was a Private in the York and Lancaster Regiment, he was buried in the H.A.C Cemetery, Ecoust-St. Mein, Northern France. Son of David and Elizabeth Brearley, of “Lyndene,” Deepcar, he was killed on 14th May 1917 aged 27. The full peal will take three hours, the method and composition chosen for the peal is Yorkshire Surprise Major. This method is commonly rung today but the first time this method was ever rung was in 1903 at St Johns Ranmoor with David Brearley (Senior) ringing the fifth bell. This peal has been organised by the Yorkshire Association of Change Ringers who are ringing for each man listed in the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers Rolls of Honour book kept in St Pauls Cathedral. The book contains the names of all the known bell ringers who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars from the County of Yorkshire and all over the Commonwealth. David Ivor was one of the well known Brearley family of Bell Ringers. David Ivor is among one million Commonwealth servicemen to be individually commemorated by the Royal British Legion, in partnership with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, in their www.everymanremembered.org, a project remembering service men and women who were killed during the First World War. Not only were David Ivor’s family keen bell ringers, but also well-known local builders. David Ivor’s Grandfather, John Brearley, built St. Mary’s Church in 1876 and his father, David Brearley, hung the bells in the Church in 1892. This year will commemorate 125 years since they were installed and, with the exception of wartime, have been rung regularly for church services and for weddings and events since. Donations given to the peal will go towards the Bell repair fund at St Marys who need to raise £100,000 to restore the historic frame and bells. Let’s help keep the bells ringing! For enquiries or to donate please contact 07722396602 or email stmarystowerbells@gmail.com or donations can be sent direct to https://paypal.me/stmarystowerbellsgb. All welcome, there is also a display in the church giving further details.
Your Letters Austerity Ahead According to Petra Schleiter, Professor of Comparative Politics at Oxford University, governments call snap elections when they cannot be confident of maintaining their current, high level of popularity and performance through to the next regular election; thus begging the question (if she is right) as to what pitfalls PM May is perceiving befalling the country in the near future, that she seeks to avoid taking the consequences for. Or could it be a case of a continuing painful, austerity-based hidden agenda that she has in mind? And hence is seeking to use the current Brexit negotiations as a means of generating a “strong and stable government backed by a large Tory majority, that will give her carte blanche to do as she pleases on both the domestic as well as the European front?

Tour thanks Dear Sirs I would like to thank through your newspaper local communities, shops, schools, golf club, Town and City Council and other groups for the fantastic support they gave to the Tour de Yorkshire last Sunday and the weeks running up to the terrific event. Stocksbridge, Deepcar and Bolsterstone were awash with blue, white and yellow, yellow bikes, bunting, painted walls and flags. A real tribute to our terrific community. Visitors who I spoke with were full of praise for our valley. The television coverage was excellent, and I do believe the event has put us well and truly on the map. I can honestly say how proud I was as Mayor of Stocksbridge. I would also through your column like to pay special thanks to Mark Dransfield and his team, for spearheading this, and basically making it happen. Councillor Alan Law JP, Stocksbridge Town Mayor

Choosing
FINDING good quality childcare can be a difficult task for parents. There are lots of things to look out for and to remember to ask when you visit a childcare setting.
How do you know if your child will be happy? Will they cater for your child’s needs? Do they provide feedback about how your child is doing? What if my child doesn’t like it?
• Safe and clean premises welcoming and friendly with outside play space
• What are your policies on discipline and how do you manage children’s behaviour?
think about the things that matter to you and your child, and make sure you ask about them!
• Cultural sensitivity and responsiveness to children’s home life
• Do you provide meals, snacks, nappies, etc. or will I need to provide them?
• A staff team and group of children who reflect local ethnic and cultural groups
What will your child enjoy? Here’s a list of the things children said were most important when Family and Childcare Trust visited nurseries and asked children for their views:
Most childcare providers (including nurseries, childminders, children’s centres and extended school services) looking after children under the age of eight years usually have to be registered with Ofsted (the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills). Ofsted visits all registered childcare services and makes sure that standards are being met and that children are safe. You can check Ofsted’s grade and report for the childcare providers you are considering at www.ofsted.gov.uk.
Draw up a shortlist of childcare providers using information from your local Family Information Service. Remember to check:
• Fun activities planned each day childminders, nurseries and outof-school clubs all need to plan their days with children’s interests and enthusiasms in mind
• The hours that childcare providers can provide childcare
• Planned exercise and quiet times to relax are important
• The hourly, daily, and/or weekly cost
• A big welcome for you and your child
• If they have places available for your child • It’s a good idea to visit several settings and ask questions in person about the childcare provided. It might help to take a friend and/or your child on the visits to help you decide. What to look for: • Trained and experienced staff, ready to learn and respond to your child’s individual needs • Busy, but relaxed, children who seem happy and purposeful
What to ask: • What is the ratio of staff to children? How many children do you care for? • What qualifications experience do you have?
and/or
• What are the daily routines and how can you incorporate my child’s and other children’s routines? • Do you operate a key worker scheme (whereby one member of staff has main responsibility for your child)?
Wharncliffe Side Primary School
• Friends - check a stable group of children attend so your children can have fun with friends • Food - check mealtimes are relaxed and fun and ask if children can help themselves to drinks and snacks • Fun outside - check the outside area is well planned, spacious and safe - children love playing outside • Finding out - make sure there is plenty of opportunity for children to learn new things with varied, carefully planned things to do • Feeling safe and loved - check that the staff are able to respond to individual children’s needs, to comfort and encourage them and to keep them safe These are just some of the things you can consider; remember to also
Nursery
Wharnclie Side Nursery is a Local Authority setting with provision for children from 2–5 years. We also have integrated resource for children with additional needs. We oer 15 hours free entitlement to 2, 3 and 4 year old children between the hours of 9am & 3pm. There is the option to purchase additional sessions. We warmly welcome your visits and enquiries.
Come and have a look around!
Book your child’s place and arrange details like hours, start date, and who is allowed to pick up your child. You may need to pay a retainer fee to keep the place open until your child starts. Your child may take some time to settle into any new childcare setting that you start them in, so allow them time to adjust to their new surroundings, especially if this is their first time in childcare. Most childcarers, such as childminders, will offer a ‘settling in period’, where you have an agreed length of time to assess whether the setting is the right one for your child and that they are happy there.

S
SATURDAY saw the club make their debut in the Northern Track and Field league. Getting a team together was no easy task for team captain Richard Hayes with injuries and other commitments and even on the day there were a few event changes with those who attended stepping up and doing events they had never done before, including hurdling, long jump, shot putt and the hammer throw.
The day after completing multiple race for the club on the track Gareth Cooke ran an excellent 77:08 at the North Lincolnshire Half Marathon.

GRAVES WINS WHEELER EVENT

Howarth success
SHEFFIELD favourite Kyle Howarth pulled off a magnificent result to win the British Semi-Final at Owlerton. The Tigers skipper was solid throughout and successfully fended off his opponents after dropping just three points all night. It was another memorable night for the 23-year-old who continued his spectacular run of early season form. Howarth opened with two straight race victories before rounding off his night with three consecutive second places, clinching the top score in heat 18. Seven time British Champion Scott Nicholls finished runner-up while Belle Vue and Workington man Craig Cook snatched the final rostrum place on countback. Chris Harris, Josh Auty and Lewis Kerr were the other automatic qualifiers while Lewis Bridger and Stuart Robson came through the run-off for the final two places after Carl Wilkinson was excluded following a nasty crash on bend four. The Tigers return to SGB Championship action next Thursday when they host Redcar at Owlerton.

MOT’s £35.00 LAST weekend was a busy one for members of Birdwell Wheelers. On Saturday the club ran its annual 25 mile time trial at Hatfield Woodhouse. Overall winner was Philip Graves in 51.51. Wheeler Dan Taylor was third in 54.53. Club mates Trevor Mayne 57.01 and Paul Mason 57.34 combined with Taylor to win the team of three prize in an aggregate time of 2:49.28. Greg Godley finished in 1:06.32. On Sunday Dan Taylor, Jack Hollington, Tom Booth, John Woodhouse and Trevor Mayne rode the Tour de Yorkshire Sportive on a 100km route from Fox Valley at Stocksbridge. The route with
over 6,000 feet of climbing covered many of the roads used later in the day by the professionals. They were joined in the afternoon by Club members Steve Myatt, Dave Hudson, Austin Watson, Tony Lodge, Paul Mynett and Roger Bacon along with thousands of other spectators to watch the final stage of the Tour as it entered Barnsley Borough. Also on Sunday Paul Heggie rode in the Veteran Time Trial Association (VTTA) 15 mile Championship at South Cave and finished in 37m 07s to place 84th out of 129 riders. Tuesday’s five mile time trial at Thurgoland saw Anthony Bromley of Ingbirchworth riding for his new Team SSSL fastest in 11.35 closely followed by

Stocksbridge thwarted by final wicket stand
Unit 7 Glen Works | Carr Road Deepcar | Sheffield | S36 2NR
35 YEARS COMBINED LAND ROVER EXPERIENCE
Stocksbridge first XI 93 all out • Lost by 37 runs • Sheffield Centralians 130 all out On a breezy Saturday afternoon the first XI entertained Sheffield Centralians first XI at Bracken Moor. Captain Pete Broomhead once again won the toss and elected to field first. With their many layers on in the brisk weather, the 1st took to the field hoping to get off to a positive start. Joe Hibbert and Jake Vickers took the new ball and the pair bowled with aggression and pace making life very difficult for the Centralians openers. Vickers was the first to strike, removing the opener for eight after a brilliant low catch by Andy Hibbert at first slip. Centralians number three looked to be getting settled at the crease before Vickers struck again, removing him caught behind for 21 with good work from Dave Smith behind the stumps. Jim Tomlinson replaced Joe Hibbert and straight away hit his line and length perfectly. The reliable Tomlinson removed the Centralians captain, who was beginning to look comfortable at the crease. Tomlinson continued his fine spell picking up two more wickets in consecutive overs leaving Centralians 51-5, with Tomlinson picking up 3-46. Andy Hibbert came into the attack and used his experience to keep Stocksbridge on top. He, just like Tomlinson, was reliable as ever picking up three early wickets leaving Centralians 76-8 with a mountain to climb to save the innings. However the game drifted dramatically
and the 1 ’s struggled to take the final wicket. st
A last wicket partnership of 54 took Centralians up to a competitive 130 all out. The Centralians number six made 52, with the 1st XI frustratingly dropping him four times in the process. Going into tea a little disgruntled Stocksbridge needed to remain positive for the run chase. They got off to the worse possible start as Jamie Newton was stumped superbly for one. He was slowly followed back to the pavilion by Dave Smith, who unfortunately played the ball onto his pad and then onto his stumps. It was looking like one of them days with the bat. At 19-4 they needed something special to swing the game back in their favour. Joe Hibbert and Ben Cherry batted positively and looked to be comfortable at the crease. The pair ticked the game on nicely at ease and seemed to be making the decisive partnership which was crucially needed. However, Hibbert was removed for 23 after a good catch on the boundary and was shortly followed by Cherry for 19. At 72-7 the firsts needed something special. Callum Haywood looked composed and decisive at the crease and gave his all to be the match winner. Unfortunately it was not to be and Haywood ran out of partners leaving the first 93 all out. The last wicket partnership for Centralians proving to be the difference in the game. A frustrating day for the 1st with many positives but not the complete performance to pick up the
win. They are back in action on Saturday, entertaining Sheffield Civil Service first XI at Bracken Moor. Stocksbridge second team took the long journey to Youlgrave to play Sheffield Centralians second team. Stocksbridge won the toss and elected to bat and after a comfortable start for openers Dave Codd and Elliot Freeman three early wickets fell including the openers and number three Ant Siddall. At 15-3 it needed Bob Newton and captain Chris Ogley to rebuild and occupy the crease for a while. It resulted in a 94 run partnership before the captain was bowled for 41 with Bob Newton kicking on and putting on another partnership with Ben Lyons of 61 with both playing attacking shots before Newton was out for 77 and Lyons for 35 to help Stocksbridge to 199-9 total. In the reply Stocksbridge bowled tightly and openers Adam Stubbs and Chris Thwaites created plenty of pressure on the Centralians early batting order and reduced them to 37-4 with Thwaites taking three wickets and Stubbs bowling one of the openers. They rebuilt their innings to 122-4 and looking to set up a great run chase before two quick wickets from Thwaites and Codd swung it back in Stocksbridge favour. A match winning innings of 71 from Wigglesworth and lusty blows from Latif took Centralians to a thrilling victory with only two balls to spare. A great cricket match and both teams should take great credit in their performances.
