OVER 300 people gathered outside Sheffield Town Hall on Saturday March 18 to demonstrate their objection to the proposal to build a major motorway service area on Smithy Wood.

Smithy Wood is a Local Wildlife Site and ancient woodland in Sheffield’s green belt and Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust organised a peaceful protest.

For the past four years Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust has been campaigning alongside local residents and other environmental groups to save Smithy Wood from a highly controversial proposal to build an 80-bed hotel, car park and fast food court.

The proposal was set to be considered by Sheffield City Council’s planning committee on March 28, but has been delayed following news of another proposal to build a motorway service area at Junction 33 on the M1, a site designated for this type of development.

Speakers at today’s event included Liz Ballard, CEO of Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust; Oliver Newham, Senior Campaigner at the Woodland Trust; Jean Howe, Chair of Cowley Residents Action Group; Angela Smith, MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge; and local councillor Steve Wilson.

It was an occasion for all with face painting for children and music from Sheffield Samba Band along with local singer Richard Kedward who performed Joni Mitchell’s 1970s hit Big Yellow Taxi.

Liz Ballard, CEO of Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, said: “In a few weeks’ time a beautiful carpet of native bluebells will start to reappear in Smithy Wood. Just today I saw two buzzards circling over the woodland - it really does support so much wildlife.

“Irreplaceable ancient woodland and local wildlife should be protected and not destroyed. Smithy Wood is not the place to build a motorway service area. The new proposal at Junction 33

Appeal for Penistone child’s powerchair THE family of a four-year-old girl from Penistone are raising funds to buy a wheelchair for her.

Molly Williams has a life-limiting, degenerative condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

According to stats from SMA Support UK, only 5% of children survive to the age of two.

The St John the Baptist CE Primary School pupil’s life would be made a lot easier if she had a powerchair so her parents, Julian and May Williams, are attempting to raise the funds needed.

May told Look Local: “The horror and heartbreak of Molly’s condition is hard to put into words.

SMA means that Molly will never walk, stand, or even sit unsupported.

“Her muscles are slowly dying in her body. Her spine is crushing in on itself, and her hips have subjuxation (dislocation), all caused by poor muscle support for her frame.

“She struggles to even hold her head up when she’s tired. Her lungs do not inflate properly, so she wears a bipap machine at night with a full facemask. We do not know what the future holds.

ORGANISERS of Penistone Gala are looking for teams of up to eight contestants who want to take on a Wipeout-style last man standing game as part of this year’s Star Wars themed gala.

“I think lots of us have watched these kind of fun events on the television and wondered what it might be like to have a go. Well, now here’s your chance!”

Contestants wearing Star Wars fancy dress must use all their Jedi powers to bounce, hurdle and dodge the rotating arm of doom as it attempts to send them spread-eagled from the inflatable game.

The Spread Eagled Tournament will take place on Penistone Showground as part of Penistone Gala on Sunday June 11 between 12.30pm and 3.30pm.

The tournament is open to adults and children aged 10+.

The Mayor of Penistone will present the winning contestant with the inaugural Penistone Cup on behalf of their team and they will receive £50 of gift vouchers for their troubles.

“We really wanted to encourage local groups – whether that’s your local sports team, community group, workmates or simply a group of friends – to do something different at this year’s Gala,” explains Jon Gilbert, one of the organisers from Penistone Round Table.

Tickets for teams of up to eight people can be purchased online at www.penistonegala.co.uk priced £20 per team (£2.50 per contestant).

The newly refurbished library, helped by donations from the Parents’ Association, will now be open to parents, carers and children throughout the week to encourage shared enjoyment of reading.

Deepcar St John’s also celebrated the day with everyone attending dressed as a character from a book.

They had a big book swap, which involved children bringing a book from home that they no longer wanted and swapping with another child.

They also had children making book tokens entering into the world book day competition.

Local author Suzy Senior was in school all day and joined pupils for a special assembly, reading the whole school a story before answering questions from the children. The day was finished off with a big book quiz.

The developer, MSA Extra, and the land owner, St Paulâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, are applying to build a retail park larger than the size of a typical motorway service station with fast food outlets, such as McDonalds and Starbucks, and an 80-bed hotel. This service station would be on one of the safest stretches of road in the region that is already well served by other local businesses.

The development would permanently destroy irreplaceable ancient woodland and diminish the green belt. Government guidance is clear â&#x20AC;&#x201C; ancient woodlands cannot be compensated for by new tree planting or woodland management elsewhere.

Sheffield City Council has received over 1,000 online objections to the proposals, with the vast majority citing the loss of this important habitat for local wildlife as their key reason for opposing the application.

CYCLING might seem like an impossible dream to some people with disabilities.

But that’s being challenged by a local charity which loans out specially adapted bikes and now offers a discounted rate thanks to a successful funding bid.

Sheffield Cycling for All, which is part of Disability Sheffield, runs every Thursday from Hillsborough Park. The charity has just received an extra £46,000 through HealthRich and is now able to loan bikes at just £3 per session. The funding will also allow the group to run weekly sessions on another day and is looking for volunteers to help with this.

One of its organisers, Caroline Waugh, said: “Having brain damage, epilepsy, impaired vision, broken limbs, lymphoedemia and cancer didn’t stop my passion for cycling, which is why I helped to set up Sheffield Cycling 4 All. “It’s so important to be energised and feel the fresh air on your face. And what we do here is help people do the best they can.

“We’re delighted to have the extra funding as it means we can get more people on our bikes and hire them out at a discounted rate. One of our customers, a 79 year old woman, told me she takes 12 tablets a day for her health but nothing makes her feel better than cycling around the park with us.

“I wouldn’t like to say we can do everything but we’ve never had a disability we’ve not been able to cater for. We want more people to be able to use our bikes and are delighted that we can set up extra sessions. We’re now looking for more volunteers and even more support for our organisation.”

Sheffield City Council has helped support Sheffield Cycling 4 All through its ‘ward funding’ pot which is used to provide small grants to local community projects.

Councillor Jack Scott, Cabinet Member for Community Services at Sheffield City Council, said: “I’m very pleased we’ve been able to support Sheffield Cycling 4 All with a small grant from the Hillsborough ward pot which is being used for bike shelters, maintenance and equipment. They’re a great organisation helping people do things they might otherwise not be able to do, and just one of the many groups who help make our communities strong.”

Sheffield Cycling 4 All runs from Hillsborough Park on a Thursday from 10am-3pm between March and October, with reduced hours during the winter. People can turn up and borrow one of 17 bikes, suitable for people with different needs including wheelchair users and complex learning disabilities. Sessions can also be organised for disability specific groups.

Last year saw the number of people attending increase from an average of 18 to 28 each session.

Concert for Rwanyana AFTER their sell out concert in Stocksbridge last summer requests were made for the Bevox Choir to return.

This time they are doing a concert on April 7 when they will again perform in Christ Church at 7pm in aid of the Rwanyana Village Community Project.

Last year the choir certainly lived up to their reputation for being a vibrant local choir, open to people of all ages and abilities and of being â&#x20AC;&#x153;the choir that has funâ&#x20AC;?.

Under the guidance of their musical director, Timothy Allen, it has developed an exciting and powerful sound, and regularly has sell-out performances across Sheffield, Wakefield, and further afield.

The funds raised at the Bevox concert last year have helped to build a hostel for 15 orphaned or abandoned children.

The building is now complete and the choir is returning to help us to furnish it. The children are being looked after by the brother of Grace Bevan who is a resident of Bolsterstone but was born in Uganda.

They are educated and provided with school materials and uniform and given two meals a day by the project.

Giant T-shirt to adorn Penistone church for Yorkshire cycle race PENISTONE is the last town that this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tour de Yorkshire will pass through and they are keen to put themselves on the map.

On Saturday April 1, the Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team will be abseiling down St John the Baptistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church to help attach a large T-shirt to the church tower to mark the start of the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tour de Yorkshire preparations.

Joining them on his bike will be Penistoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mayor, Paul Hand-Davis, along with his wife and supported by a team of cycling enthusiasts from Penistone St Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Primary School who have recently done their cycling proficiency.

The Tour de Yorkshire which passes through Penistone and the surrounding areas on Sunday April 30 has grabbed the local business, community groups and residentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s enthusiasm. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have created a steering group comprising representatives from local businesses, community groups, and the local councilâ&#x20AC;? explained Paul

Hand-Davis, â&#x20AC;&#x153;who are working together to bring a carnival atmosphere to the town on the day.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s incredible how the local community is so keen and proud to show off Penistone and the surrounding areas at their best on the day. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Plans are already underway to have music playing throughout Penistone on tour day with family activities being created in different parts of the town. In addition the local shops, businesses, pubs and cafes will be open to the public all day. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are immensely proud that the tour is coming through Penistone. We not only have the main race in the afternoon, but the three sportives coming through on the Sunday morning. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to be a fantastic atmosphere.â&#x20AC;?

The launch day for the town is Saturday 1st April.

For the following month, there will be different activities planned throughout the town and the surrounding areas as well as in local schools to mark the tour coming through Penistone.

AUDITIONS for Steel Valley Beaconâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s production of the musical â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Oliverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; will be held on Saturday afternoon, March 25 at 1 pm and also on Friday April 7 at 7pm in St Annâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church Hall, Deepcar.

The auditions will be in the form of workshops â&#x20AC;&#x201C; at this stage no-one will be asked to perform solo.

The minimum age is nine and adults are also required for roles and chorus. The director is Mandy Aitken and musical director is Daniel Timmins. The show will be presented at the end of September.

PACES is a charity based in High Green that uses conductive education, a holistic system of learning to help children and adults with neurological motor disorders.

In September 2015, they were pleased to be able to extend provision by creating groups for people who have suffered from a stroke or who have Parkinsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s.

Unfortunately, after 10 months this provision had to stop due to lack of funding. So, it is with great delight that staff can report that they have received a grant from the Peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Postcode Trust for ÂŁ15,501.

The Peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Postcode Trust is a grant-giving body supported entirely by players of Peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Postcode Lottery.

This grant has enabled Paces to re-start the group supporting people who have had a stroke.

They currently run one group per week for six people who

come from different areas of Sheffield.

The session runs on a Monday morning from 10.30am to 1pm and all six members of the group would testify to the benefits they gain from attending the group.

Ruth Liu, acting head of Adult Services, told Look Local: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our programme enables people to relearn skills that aid recovery from stroke to increase levels of activity, support daily living and improve confidence and selfesteem. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We support people who have just had a stroke, or those who have recently completed a period of intensive rehabilitation, to work towards increasing the range and control of their movement skills. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our flexible approach allows people to relearn skills relevant to their personal circumstances at any stage during their recovery and offers benefits to anyone aged 18 plus regardless of how long ago they had a stroke.

The race will finish at the Fox Valley shopping centre on April 30 after the 194 km ride from Bradford.

It’s already been billed as one of the toughest stages on the professional circuit this year.

Thousands of amateur cyclists will also take part in the Maserati Tour de Yorkshire Ride which will start and finish at Fox Valley on the final day of the three-day race.

Bash the bracken

PART of the Wharncliffe Heathlands Nature Reserve is being managed as a woodland pasture to encourage greater biodiversity on the site.

One of the major problem in the management is the encroachment of bracken.

Any anyone wanting to take part should meet at the River Don bridge on Station Road, Deepcar (map reference SK 291 980 /post code S36 2SQ) at 11am.

Hence the next conservation task on the reserve on Sunday March 26 is bashing back the bracken.

Wear stout footwear and bring warm clothes, gardening gloves and some lunch. Under 18s are welcome but will need to be accompanied by an adult. The event is scheduled finish by 4pm.

Volunteers are invited to join a work party alongside with Sheffield University Conservation Volunteers on the first day of British Summer Time. Tools and training will be provided. The event will be rounded off with a short tour of the reserve as it springs back into life.

It has been restored over many years by teams of volunteers. Come and see the wheels turn – and imagine the noise, the heat, the hard physical work, the danger. Just think what it was like to live there!

There is a small admission charge. They will see the wheels turning, and our current restoration projects.

They have a collection of historic engines and machines, some of which will be working.

Families given school of choice 96 per cent of children in Sheffield have been given a place at a secondary school of their choice, new figures show.

Of the 6,101 pupils set to start secondary school in September, 96 per cent have been given a place at one of their three choices of school, while 88 per cent have been given their first choice of school.

This is around the same as last year, where Sheffield was once again above the national average.

This has meant growing pressure on places in some parts of the city and that is set to grow again in the next two years.

In order to ensure families continue to access a local school from September 2018, two great new schools are being created in those areas of pressure – one on the Bannerdale site in south west Sheffield, and one on the Woodside site in the north east of the city. Additional places will also be available at Don Valley Academy from September 2018.

In total 96 per cent of pupils were allocated one of their three preferences and 88 per cent were allocated their first choice. Last year, 96 per cent were also allocated one of their three choices, while 87 per cent got a place at their first choice of school.

The small number of children who were not allocated a place at any of their three preferences have either been referred back to their catchment school or been allocated the nearest school with places available.

Information and advice is available for anyone not satisfied with the school place which they have been allocated. Parents also have the right to appeal.

Appeals take place between April and July.

Dragon’s Well date stone missing

Does anyone know what has happened to the old date-stone which was still at Allman Well (for centuries known locally as Dragon’s Well) on Townend Common about a year back but which has now disappeared?

Building on this site should be an absolute last resort. With houses being built on brown field sites at Fox Valley, proposals for 400 houses on the current sewerage site and 100s more proposed for the old British Tissues site there is absolutely no justification for building on these fields lying between Deepcar and Bolsterstone.

Hi there, I have also contacted the council regarding road safety at Orchard Street, Bridge Hill, Low Road and Station Lane.

I remember objecting to building on this site over 20 years ago. Today I fear for the area my son will grow up in if the green spaces that we are lucky to be surrounded by are eroded away.

Making Mother’s Day enjoyable for a loved one with Dementia Mother’s Day is the perfect chance to spend time with the whole family, but the celebration can be stressful for people living with Dementia.

Home care provider Helping Hands has some helpful advice for families on how to make Mother’s Day more enjoyable for a loved one with Dementia.

Helping Hands has been working with people with Dementia and their families for 26 years through a range of hourly visiting and live-in care services focused on allowing people to stay in their own home and live independent lives.

Tiffany Smith, Dementia specialist at Helping Hands, recommends the below tips to create a relaxing and calm atmosphere on Mother’s Day for a loved one living with dementia: Plan meals carefully and in advance If you’re planning a meal out, make sure you find a quieter pub or restaurant, as increased noise can be disorientating. Make sure the pub or restaurant has plenty of room to allow your loved one to walk about while waiting for the meal – we can all become restless whilst waiting. If this is going to be problematic, trying ordering a sandwich or something that is quicker to prepare. You could even notify the pub in advance, so you don’t have as long to wait for your meals. Always allow plenty of time to travel to and from the venue, as rushing will add to your loved one’s anxiety.

Consider activities at home If a meal out wouldn’t be suitable, why not organise to cook a meal at home in a quiet, familiar and comfortable setting? Make sure Mum feels involved – something simple such as peeling the potatoes while sat at the dining room table is a great way to achieve this. Encourage your mother to lay the table; she might want to decide the seating plan if there are quite a few people coming. Make sure you use photographs rather than names as they are more likely to prompt her memory.

Choose activities that involve everyone Take the gift of a lovely bunch of flowers to the next level and provide your loved one with a flower arranging session at home, using ribbons, bows and her favorite vase. Flower arranging is a calming, relaxing and enjoyable activity providing sensory experiences such as touch and smell.

This activity can be done standing, sitting or at a bedside making it accessible for all individuals.

Create a playlist Select some of your mother’s favourite songs from when she was growing up and put together a playlist. Music can provide a calming and soothing atmosphere. Individuals with dementia can respond positively to songs they connect with, giving them the chance to sing a long and reminisce.

Stay within the comfort zone It’s best to avoid any activities that take your loved one out of their comfort zone, such as shopping, or activities that require them to remain stationary for a long period of time like the cinema. These activities may increase anxiety, and therefore will not be enjoyable for your loved one.

Make it personal Although there are many activities that are beneficial for people living with Dementia, everything depends on personal preference from the activities you do together to the gift you choose.

Tiffany said: “Busy restaurants and other activities you associate as classic Mother’s Day plans can be stressful for a person living with Dementia.

It’s important to make sure your loved one feels fully included in the celebrations of the day and be prepared to make some adjustments to make the day calm and as stress-free as possible.

“Music and flowers are just a few easily achievable examples of things which can really make a positive difference for a mother or grandmother living with Dementia on Mother’s Day.”

A PARTNERSHIP created by Barnsley Council and Rotherham Council, has been successful in winning a grant of £1.2 million, to deliver activities focused on the rich heritage stories of the south Yorkshire villages of Elsecar and Wentworth.

The funding has been sourced from the Great Place Scheme, a pilot project, which has two main aims.

Firstly to ensure that the considerable investment in culture made by organisations like the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and Arts Council England has the maximum positive impact on jobs, economic performance, educational attainment, community cohesion and health and wellbeing. Secondly, to help ambitious civic organisations, local businesses and communities invest in culture and put it at the heart of their thinking.

The money received from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council England and Historic England, will be critical in achieving the objectives of the Partnership. These have been inspired by the ambitions of the two places to be recognised for their great potential as major visitor destinations and by the need to drive social change inspired by Child Poverty Report by Barnsley Central MP Dan Jarvis.

FOOTPATH RUNNER SETS NEW V50 RECORD THE East Hull 20, one of the major events in the region’s club calendar, took place in flat, but extremely windy and exposed conditions in the East Riding of Yorkshire. New Penistone Foothpath Runners recruit Gareth Cooke broke the overall 20 mile club record in 2:02.58. John Howsham broke a 25year record to break the M50 mark in 2:27.03.

The local Windmill Six took runners past the windmills up on Royd Moor, in the high winds and driving rain of Sunday. Seuranie Johnstone completed the race in 51.07.

Chris Hodgson travelled up to the Lake District for the Carrock fell race, run over 9km and 1,640ft of climbing, finishing 46th in 66.21.

The Heptonstall fell race took place in the Calder Valley over 15.4 miles with 3,169 feet of climbing. The course was completed by Sarah Jones-Morris in 3:12.31 and Brent Lindsay in 3:23.56.

Steve Storey travelled over to Lancashire to take part in the excellent Podium 5k, one of the fastest 5k road courses in the UK. He finished first V60 in an excellent time of 19.42.

Thirty PFR runners took part in the first of the 2017 Silkstone Shuffle Series. Shaun Dimelow was second overall in 27.45 and first V45, whilst Lee Storey was fourth and first M35 in 28.26.

Pete Stanley was first V55 and Norman Cole first V80. The ladies were in the prizes with Julia Johnson and Julie Darigala finishing second and third overall, and Heather Simpson finishing first F40.

In the junior race, Hugh Mackie finished second overall with Finlay Allen third.

Hawks punch above their weight Sheffield Hawks 26-38 Oulton Raiders THIS was the first match of the season, and a cracker to boot, showing the excellent potential that this squad has.

After training incidents and injuries resulted in a 12 man team taking on a full Oulton squad of 17, the Hawks showed great resolve in matching the visitors try for try for 75% of the match.

This match was a testament to the fitness and resolve of 12

young men who really took the game to the opposition from the start. In the first two minutes Oulton took the lead with a try that appeared to show how rusty and off the pace Hawks seemed.

However the next 20 minutes saw three unanswered tries from Hawks which simply stunned the opposition crowd and team in to silence. Bailey Thompson scored the first before a Harry Edgar brace. A few missed tackles and some slower defending saw the

Raiders pinch a score at the end of half.

Harry Scott hit back for Hawks but at this point the extra man started to tell. Raiders scored a couple of quick tries but again the Hawks responded and scored again through Ryan Pellegrina.

In the last 15 minutes Raiders ran in three unanswered tries with a visibly tiring Hawks unable to stem the tide.

War Memorial women and Church win AN Andy Ring brace helped Penistone Church to a 4-2 win against Yorkshire Amateur with Ryan Smith and Scott Whittington also on target.

Oughtibridge War Memorial Ladies have had a tough first season in the NE Regional Premier League and went into this battle knowing that a defeat against fellow strugglers Wakefield could see them slip into the bottom three.

But this was to be the day Oughtibridge made themselves mathematically safe with a hard fought 3-0 win.

In the 27th minute Wakefield pushed up for offside and Grace Rodgers played in Bex Shaw who beat the trap and slid home her first of the season in great style. Both teams then missed chances as the half ended 1-0.

With injuries taking their toll Oughtibridge’s back four and midfield were packed with normally attacking players but they did a solid job to withstand a Wakefield onslaught with keeper Coran Wright called upon to make two smart saves, whilst centre

back pairing Chloe Rodgers and skipper Abigail Towns both made outstanding last ditch tackles.

Freya Wilson, 16, was ploughing a lone furrow up front with the injured Bridie Pitsch in support but remarkably it was Pitsch who crafted the second goal in the 76th minute, holding the ball up and playing Lauren Turner in for her first goal back after four months out injured.

Anna Goulding had been a threat all afternoon down the left wing and she skipped past a couple of defenders in the 85th minute with her low cross finding Pitsch again in the right place as she smacked the ball under the keeper for 3-0.

Whilst the scoreline flattered the relief of achieving their first 3 point haul since early December was palpable.

Stocksbridge Park Steels under 12s took a 3-3 draw against Bramley Sunnyside in Division B with Pick, Hennessey and Hirst on target.

The under 13s lost 5-1 to Hoyland Town Rangers in Division D with Lowe scoring for Steels.

Ruthven at double as steels put five past stamfoRd

PLAY-OFF chasing Stocksbridge Park Steels were resounding winners away to Stamford.

Steels went into the break with a two-goal advantage after Richard Stirrup put Steels 1-0 up on 31 minutes with his second goal after returning from a spell in Australia. Brodie Litchfield unlocked the defence with a great pass which presented Stirrup with an easy tap in.

Ten minutes later Harrison Biggins increased the lead with a well taken penalty.

But it wasn’t until the 86th minute when the visitors showed their dominance as Scott Ruthven scored from a tight angle.

A few minutes later substitute Joe Lumsden, back from injury, set up Josh Hobson for his first goal for Stocksbridge. Ruthven then made it five with minutes to go.
