Supporting the Local Community

call for road danger action

THE community of Oughtibridge gathered to show their support of a petition asking Sheffield City Council to review the road safety measures at a busy junction. Parents and pupils from Bradfield School and Oughtibridge Primary School attended, along with cyclists and residents of the area. There have been four accidents requiring hospital attention in the last five weeks on the Forge Hill zebra crossing and near misses are reported on almost a daily basis.

Local resident Terry Barrow collected over 700 signatures on a petition and presented it to a Sheffield City Council meeting. Terry said at the meeting: “The drive to build homes and redevelop brownfield sites the Upper Don Valley is significant. There are already plans for several large sites and the potential for more. Traffic from each one will have to pass through our already congested village. “Each proposal is treated piecemeal with residents left to live with the cumulative effect of the developments. “Then an application came in to build on Jawbone Hill. It wasn’t the housing that prompted this petition. It was the cheap and ill-considered solution to provide pedestrian access to the site that angered people. “They are proposing putting traffic lights on the railway bridge on Jawbone! Anyone who lives or commutes here knows this would cause chaos

The junction where the crossing is has cars coming from three different directions and drivers have a lot to take in as they approach.

Oughtibridge residents and road users showed their support for the changes on Tuesday afternoon.

So I agreed to start a petition - talking to people in the village as well as using online community social media. “It soon became clear there were other connected issues that concerned people. For example, the safety of people using the zebra crossing on the lower A6102. People were getting in touch - almost daily - about near misses, car shunts and other non reportable incidents. “And this crossing is only about 10 metres from a very complex junction, with unclear traffic priorities. “In the four weeks since starting this petition there have been three serious accidents, two involving cyclists and one motorbike. All three riders required hospital treatment. “So the traffic system in the village is broken and the number of reported accidents is now significant, let alone non - reportable ones. This can only get worse as more and more vehicle movements are added as developments come on stream. The proposed traffic lights on Jawbone, Jawbone’s junction with the A6102 and the zebra crossing are symbiotic.” The petition calls for a number of actions to be taken, including a full review of the traffic system in the village, taking into account both existing and projected traffic flows. It also asks for a separate foot and cycle bridge being a made a condition of any planning application above the railway line on Jawbone. A site visit was also requested and this was granted, although the date has yet to be confirmed.
