Ten days to act before hundreds of buses are cut Louise Haigh MP, Shadow Transport Secretary has warned that the Conservatives are asleep at the wheel as hundreds of bus services face axe, without certainty over vital funding.

Today (Tuesday 7 February) Labour will warn that there are “just ten days to act” before operators are forced to begin slashing bus routes across the country.

With the Government’s Bus Recovery Grant set to expire at the end of March communities face a crisis within days, as operators are required to give sixweeks’ notice of plans to cancel or change routes.

RAPIST JAILED FOR NEARLY 20 YEARS A Sheffield man who raped a teenager on multiple occasions faces nearly two decades behind bars.

Jamie Aron Ward, formerly of Thompson Hill High Green abused his victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, while she was aged under 16 years old.

The jury in the trial of three men accused of killing a courier during a gun-point robbery has been discharged after failing to reach a verdict.

Detective Constable Peter Bazley from Sheffield’s Protecting Vulnerable People (PVP) team said: “The victim, in this case, was a young, vulnerable teenager who Ward preyed upon and subjected to horrendous sexual abuse.

“Over a prolonged period of time, Ward raped and sexually assaulted the victim, forcing her to engage in horrific sexual acts.

Arron Hartigan, Jake Lakin, and Callum Rutherford were charged with the manslaughter of Nadeem Qureshi.

“Ward’s abuse was so significant and damaging that it was only as an adult the victim felt brave enough to disclose what had happened to her as a child.”

Ward, 38, was found guilty of 10 offences at Sheffield Crown Court last month, including two counts of rape, three counts of attempted rape and five counts of sexual assault. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison at the same court on Wednesday (1 February).

DC Bazley continued: “I want to commend the victim in this case for her courage in coming forward, and I am glad that she was able to place her trust in us to bring Ward before the courts.

“While this sentencing can never undo the trauma and pain of the abuse, I hope Ward’s victim can find some relief knowing he is behind bars for a long, long time.

During the trial prosecutors said Mr Qureshi, 40, from Manchester, had travelled to Deepcar with two colleagues to deliver nitrous oxide canisters.

It was alleged the defendants had ordered the men out of the van at gunpoint in a bid to steal the consignment.

The court was told Mr Qureshi did get out and was standing next to the van when his colleague, Massimo Rizzelli, reversed the vehicle in a bid to escape and struck him.

Mr Hartigan, 26, of no fixed abode, Mr Lakin, 22, of Smithy Moor Avenue, Stocksbridge, and Mr Rutherford, 26, of Lee Avenue, Deepcar, deny the charges.

Jailed after running Residents give feedback on a new over police officer local bus service

A Sheffield man has been jailed for 15 months after running over a police officer while on duty in Sheffield last year.

More than 400 residents from across Stocksbridge and Deepcar have taken part in a survey which will help to shape the plans for a new “hopper style” community bus for the area.

The service will be funded through part of the £24.1m government investment from the Stocksbridge Town Deal, it is one of the 10 projects aimed at making major improvements in the area.

Residents were given the opportunity to comment on potential routes and how the new service could run by taking part in a survey which was available online and in Stocksbridge Library.

The consultation ran through January and closed last week with more than 400 people submitting their responses and ideas.

The bus project aims to create a regular, reliable, and sustainable Stocksbridge-based service which links with the current public transport links in the town - it’s hoped that the new service will launch later this year.

The largest investment through the town’s fund will deliver major improvements to the Manchester Road area, with a new Library and Community Hub building at its heart.

There are also plans to enhance recreation and sporting facilities across the town.

A spokeswoman for the Stocksbridge Towns Fund Board said: “We would like to thank everyone who has taken part in the survey – there is clearly a lot of support and interest in the new local bus service. We will now be going through all the feedback we have received and engaging with potential local partners to run the service.

“We know that people are keen to see this operating as soon as possible and we’re looking forward to sharing more details including a start date in the coming weeks and months.”

Wales, who was known to the officers as a disqualified driver, accelerated directly at the officer, throwing Sergeant Sarson into the air, onto the bonnet and onto the floor, before fleeing the scene.

Rescue team thank local garage for fuel donation

GUILTY: 60 YEAR-OLD MAN OF RAPING TWO TEENAGERS A 60-year-old Sheffield man who raped and sexually assaulted two teenagers has been found guilty of numerous offences this week.

Anthony Woodward subjected both victims, who were under 18 at the time, to repeated sexual assaults and raped one of his victims on numerous occasions.

One of his victims, who legally cannot be identified, would later tell investigating officers that Woodard would tell her not to tell anybody about the abuse. The other victim told a jury at Sheffield Crown Court about how Woodward forced himself on her and, despite her shouting ‘no’, he proceeded to rape her.

A Group of volunteer mountain rescuer’s are thanking a local petrol station for donating fuel to help keep their vehicles active and able to attend emergency call-outs in the area.

Woodhead Mountan rescue thanked Cecil Penney Garage in Penistone for their generosity and support over the years.

“We would like to give a big shout out to local petrol station, Cecil Penney Ltd, for generously donating all fuel for our three front-line response vehicles. They’ve kept us fuelled for many years, meaning we’re always topped up and ready for any call out.

Temporary Detective Sergeant Susannah Taylor from Sheffield’s Protecting Vulnerable People team said: “Woodward behaved in a predatory manner towards his victims, subjecting them to unsolicited sexual advances before carrying out his awful crimes.

our investigation and because Woodward refused to accept responsibility for his offending, they have had to provide evidence before a jury, which in itself is a daunting experience.

“They have carried themselves with dignity and gave powerful testimony about Woodward’s terrible crimes and I am pleased that he has been found guilty of multiple, serious sexual offences.

“He is now remanded and awaiting sentencing, which I hope provides some solace to his victims knowing he is no longer at liberty and can’t harm anyone else.”

Woodward, formerly of Hatfield House Lane, Sheffield, was found guilty of three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and two counts of attempted sexual assault at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday 30 January after a short trial.

He has been remanded in custody and will appear before court in March for sentencing.

Scott's Illfated trip to Antarctica Teddy Evans' Boots and Other Stories. An exhibition of work is an enquiry into our fascination with exploration, focussing on Scott’s' ill-fated Antarctic expedition of 1910 – 1913, which is to go on display at a local art gallery, later this month.

Steels recipients of a generous gift

club would like to thank Peter Kenney for the generous gift which has allowed us to buy new media equipment.

“Both Peter and Marina have been fantastic volunteers for the club and are a model for all of us who work in nonleague football. We are very grateful that Mr Kenney continues to support the club by giving us this gift which will help us to improve the fan experience at Stocksbridge.

Stocksbridge Park Steels will have more coverage of the club than ever following a gift from President Peter Kenney made in tribute to his late wife Marina.

Club President Peter Kenney volunteered alongside his wife Marina for three decades at the club. Mrs Kenney volunteered in the club kitchen helping serve hungry football fans before later working alongside her husband in the committee welcoming guests and opposition directors. She would pass away in March, with the club paying tribute to her long service before the match against Cleethorpes Town. Peter Kenney is the President of Stocks-

bridge Park Steels and continues to attend games.

The club is now very grateful for a generous gift from Mr Kenney which has been made in tribute to his late wife.

This gift has allowed Stocksbridge to purchase new media equipment including their own camcorder. Currently, Stockbridge showcases their highlights and interviews with manager Ian Richards but this new equipment will allow more games to be filmed as well as exclusive behind-the-scenes films which will show fans how a non-league club is run.

Sport students rally on Barnsley College Sport students have taken part in a fiveweek tennis leader course in partnership with professional coaches from the Lawn Tennis Association.

The course enabled the students to learn how to adapt the version of tennis, which is specifically designed to give young people with a disability the chance to play and compete in the sport. It provided Sport students with the opportunity to work with young disabled people and provided the invaluable hands-on experience of being involved in a sporting event.

The games have been shown to develop teamwork, co-ordination, cognitive and social skills amongst our Learning for Living and Work (LfLW) students.

The LfLW department supports students with learning disabilities or difficulties to prepare them for independent living or supported employment.

Alice Robson, Head Coach at the Lawn Tennis Association, said: “It has been a pleasure working with Barnsley College students. They have taken on feedback well and applied themselves to developing their skills. It was fantastic to see

how they adapted the session to give students with learning disabilities the most success and gain enjoyment out of the session.

“The skills that Sport students have developed during the tennis leader course are transferrable to any sport they wish to pursue a career in.”

Amanda Sowerby, Physical Activity and Sports Co-ordinator at Barnsley College, added: “By completing this course, the students developed their selfconfidence, leadership skills and enhanced their future employment prospects. All the students involved in organising and taking part have been enthusiastic, helpful and willing to learn. They should be really proud of themselves.”

The swirling wind gusted across the pitch and looked like it would disrupt long-ball football.

Thackley won the first corner of the match after 4 minutes, but did not convert the 8-yard volley at the near post.

Half time Thackley 0-0 PCFC Church were straight at Thackley from the start and a corner from the left after less than a minute of the restart was fired over at the near post. Inter took the lead early on when a defensive mix up led to a tap in for the Inter striker.

With 10 minutes to go RBL threw bodies forward and were caught when a long clearance sent the striker clean through. Inter then made it 4-1 in the final moments when Jacob Walkland made a tackle which went past goalkeeper James Birch.

First back for Penistone was Andrew Heppenstall in 34-12, he was closely followed by Ben Malcolm who recorded a pb of 34-18. They were rewarded with top 20 places in the men’s over40 category.

Third back was Will Hoyland in 35-12. Stand out performance came from Andrew Pearson who claimed first place in the men’s over55 age category in a time of 35-49. Andrew’s time was also a club record.

Matt Robinson claimed fifth place in the same age category in 37-24. Thirteen Penistone runners in total competed in the event which attracts some of the best athletes in the country due to the possibility of gaining a personal best.

Sarah Walch had an excellent run to claim third lady at the Saltburn Marathon.

The route is mainly off road and is actually nearly 29 miles in distance.

Rachael Mayston picked up first place in the ladies over45 category at the Chesterfield 5k.

Rachael’s time was 20-38.

At the Cod Beck Canter Damian Kilpin was 12th overall and first in the men’s over45 category.

On the parkrun scene George Parr (18-18) was first at the Penistone Parkrun and James Mumford (18-20) was first at the Dewsbury parkrun.

Only a few weeks ago, Look Local reported on a local cyclist becoming junior British Champion.

Imogen Wolff, now 17, and from Silkstone Common represented her country over the weekend.

Representing Great Britain, the college student competed for Junior Women GB team at the World Cyclocross championships in Hoogerheide, Holland.

For much of the race Imogen was inside the top 20 but due some mechanical issues with her bike finished a creditable 23rd which was 3-37mins behind race winner Isabella Holmgren of Canada. At just 17 Imogen has a bright and exciting future in cycling.

Junior training to start again With no game over the weekend, Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby will be looking forward to their trip to near neighbours Rotherham Phoenix this coming Saturday in the next round of fixtures in the Yorkshire 4 Counties competition.

This is to fall into line with other Club’s & the traditional junior training/match scheduling. All local juniors are welcome to attend, any age and abilities are welcome.

Head Coach Andy Lawrence will be hopeful of a full squad to select from for this tough but nevertheless winnable clash in Herringthorpe, with the next home fixture scheduled for 25th February against Knaresborough, with a 2.15pm kick off.

Interest is growing in the Club’s 60th Anniversary Celebration planned for the 4th March, after the Leeds Mods league fixture with many current and former players confirming their attendance. Places are still available from the Clubhouse or from organiser Julian Wilkinson on 07736 905176, the picture shows a few old faces at a reunion in the early 1980’s, although there maybe a few more grey hairs & extra pounds when the event comes around this time.

Meanwhile attention turns to the Club’s Junior section who will resume their outdoor training at Coal Pit Lane from this Wednesday starting at 5.30pm, and from 12th February, Junior Training will also return to Sunday mornings with an 11am start time.
