A 23-year-old man was stabbed in the back during a fight between two groups in Sheffield.

South Yorkshire Police said it happened outside the Go Local shop on Greengate Lane in the High Green area of the city at about 17:30 GMT on Saturday.

The fight erupted after three men in a grey Volkswagen Golf approached another group of men.

The victim was taken to hospital and treated for his injuries before being discharged.

The force said several people and a number of vehicles were believed to have been in the area at the time.

Officers have urged anyone who witnessed the incident or saw the car before or after the fight to come forward.

The victim, 23, made his own way to hospital where he was treated for injuries to his back. His injuries were not deemed life threatening or altering and he has since been discharged.

It is believed there were several people present in addition to several vehicles in the area at the time.

Officers are keen to establish the circumstances and are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or saw the car prior to the incident or after to come forward.

‘Buses failing to meet the needs of local people’ - MP Penistone and Stocksbridge MP Miriam Cates has described bus services across her constituency as "failing to meet the needs of local people" as she calls for action to address residents' concerns.

Mrs Cates said that she has received feedback from constituents for many months which shows that users are suffering from poor reliability and frequency of bus services, and that when buses do turn up they are often full and unable to pick up any more passengers. This has left people unable to get to work, school, and medical appointments.

These experiences were shared by local people at a recent meeting organised by Stocksbridge Town Council that was attended by Miriam Cates MP and the South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard, as well as Commercial Director of Stagecoach Yorkshire, John Young.

Commenting on the views expressed at the meeting, Mrs Cates said "I was very grateful that members of the public were given this opportunity to share their own experiences, and it will not come as a surprise that there is widespread disappointment.

"These are the same concerns I've been sharing in the regular meetings I’ve held with local service bus services providers, in which I’ve been able to report feedback from my bus survey, and on the many emails I’ve had from residents on this critically important subject. I was also pleased to hear strong support for the new community routes that I'm working hard to deliver through the Stocksbridge Town Deal.

"I recently met with the Bus Minister in Parliament to discuss what support the Government can give to support bus providers and the South Yorkshire Mayoral

Combined Authority, who are responsible for overseeing local services. Unfortunately the Bus Service Improvement Plan that SYMCA submitted didn't meet the required standard to qualify for additional funding, so I've asked the Minister to give further feedback and advice on how it could be improved.

"With bus usage still down on pre-pandemic levels, we need to encourage more people back onto the buses.

However this will only be possible if users feel they have a regular, reliable service. At the moment in a number of places this is not the case, and operators are failing to meet the needs of local people."

A thug has been jailed after he punched a reveller so hard he fell and smashed his head on the ground leaving him needing a metal plate in his skull, writes Jon Cooper for The Sheffield Star.

Daniel Campbell, aged 36, of King Street, Chapeltown, Sheffield, had been with friends in Woody’s bar, on Orchard Street, in Sheffield city centre, before he attacked Craig Brunt outside the pub, according to Sheffield Crown Court.

Prosecuting barrister Ian West told the court on November 14 Mr Brunt had been with his son Danny when they left the pub after a tense atmosphere developed following the arrival of Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United fans.

Mr West added: “Danny turned and saw a punch thrown at his father who fell to the floor and banged his head on the floor and he could see his father bleeding from his head.” The complainant’s son confronted Campbell as his father lay on the ground, according to Mr West.

Craig Brunt needed surgery to remove bleeding on the brain and a bone flap from his skull, according to the court, and it was sometime before the complainant’s speech and movement returned. He has had to wear a head guard and has been waiting for a further operation to fit a metal plate in his skull, according to Mr West.

Mr West who explained the incident was captured on CCTV said: “There is no suggestion they are being provocative or looking for a fight and they are followed out by a number of people including this defendant who reaches his way through colleagues and throws a forceful punch.”

The complainant who is a middle-aged, self-employed builder revealed he does not know how much he will recover, he struggles to sleep, has lost income and is frightened of being in public since the attack has changed his life. He added: “I am in constant fear. I almost died as a result of the assault and this haunts me to this day.”

The complainant said that on his daughter’s wedding day he walked her down the aisle wearing the head guard which reminded everyone how close he felt he had come to dying. He added: “I am a very different man and I do not foresee a day where I will return back to the way I was. The life ahead of me is very uncertain.”

Joiner Campbell, who has previous convictions including battery and affray, pleaded guilty to causing unlawful wounding after the incident on December 23, 2021. Mr West said Campbell’s antecedents showed a history of a ‘drunken, violent man’.

Rebecca Tanner, defending, said there had been a verbal argument developing between the defendant’s group and another group in the bar. Ms Tanner added that Campbell, who has alcohol problems, had gone outside because he claims someone had tried to strike him and he hit the complainant.

She said: “He’s embarrassed by his actions. He’s ashamed of what he has done and he’s found it difficult to view the footage of Mr Brunt’s head knowing he is the cause of the injury.”

Judge Peter Kelson KC who sentenced Campbell to three years of custody told him: “You landed him such a blow to his face that he fell back – possibly unconscious – striking his head upon the floor and he suffered a very, significant injury.”

MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has today published their report following an inspection of mental health services for young people provided

by Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.

Louise Haigh MP for Sheffield Heeley commented on this report, she said: “The latest CQC report will be of little surprise to children and young people and their parents who are struggling to access mental health services across the city and are having to sit on ever-lengthening waiting lists.

“The staff that work in mental health services are rightly proud of the treatment they provide, and it is welcome that the CQC acknowledged this, but waiting times are too long and practitioners' caseloads are far too high. This is potentially prohibiting them from providing safe treatment.

“We desperately need investment in our mental health services so that dedicated staff can support children and young people before they get into crisis, and we need emergency provision so that people don't have to rely on A&E.”

Clean Air 3, 2, 1 ITS XMAS Zone to AT FOX VALLEY launch

Sheffield’s Clean Air Zone will launch next February, with the roll out of financial support measures starting this December.

From Monday, February 27, 2023 the Class C Clean Air Zone will begin charging noncompliant vehicles. Charges will apply to the following vehicle types that do not meet the minimum standards when entering the Clean Air Zone boundary: Taxis, including both hackney carriages and private hire vehicles, which are below Euro 6 Diesel or Euro 4 Petrol standards Light goods vehicles (LGVS) such as vans, campervans and pickup trucks and minibuses which are below Euro 6 Diesel or Euro 4 Petrol standards

Buses and coaches which are below Euro 6 Diesel standards Heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) which are below Euro 6 Diesel standards In light of the cost-of-living crisis, the potential incoming changes to taxi licensing in Sheffield, the current difficulties with buying a compliant LGV and volume of LGV applications expected to be processed, the Council has negotiated with Government to deliver additional temporary local exemptions from charges until June 5, 2023 for both local Hackney Carriage taxis and LGVs. Private cars will not be charged.

POLICE FIND DRUGS, CASH AND WEAPONS AT PROPERTY A warrant was conducted on 16 November at Miles Road, High Green.

One person was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class A and B drugs.

During the warrant, numerous knives and weapons, as well as a large amount of cash, were found at the property and seized by officers.

After a long two year wait, Fox Valley’s annual Christmas Light Switch On returned on Friday with recordbreaking crowds attending.

A festive market was held full of independent traders selling a range of delicious treats, handmade Christmas gifts and mouth-watering street food for everyone.

Thousands gathered round the fountain area by Ponti’s, who officially sponsored the event, to watch local talent, big-name performances and the all-important countdown and big lights switch on.

The entertainment kicked off with Fox Valley’s popular local performer, Graham Lindley, followed by the amazing dance troupe, Branching Out. Radio star, TV presenter and DJ, Stephanie Hirst took to her decks and gave the crowd some of her well-known belters which got everyone buzzing and singing along, ready for the main event.

Molly Hayes and Charlie Leeks were this year’s nominees to turn on the Christmas lights with the Mayor of Stocksbridge, Cllr Joe Staniforth and Cllr Julie Grocutt from Stocksbridge Town Council.

To close the event, a unique and mesmerizing street theatre show from the Spark LED Drummers captivating the

crowds as they weaved in and out with their high-impact drumming, dynamic choreography, and beautiful lighting design. Stopping to take selfies and interacting with visitors, the drummers got an amazing reaction!

Fox Valley’s Centre Manager, Claire Biltcliffe, said: “I am so amazed with the turn out this year!

‘DIRTY AND DANGEROUS’: PLAYPARK DRIVING FAMILIES AWAY FROM STANNINGTON Almost 9 in every 10 families in the Stannington village area of Sheffield are choosing to travel to safer, cleaner playgrounds in other parts of the city, finds a consultation by Action for Parks in Stannington.

One parent said, “I live around the corner and barely visit due to the lack of working equipment and the state of the grounds. It’s unkempt and never a priority for the council in comparison to other parks in the city.”

Local resident and Conservative Council Candidate, Ben Woollard started Action for Parks in Stannington over a year ago, coordinating feedback, and sending petitions to Sheffield City Council, but says that the group has yet to hear a response. “Stannington Play Park has been dirty and dangerous for too long. Now, we’re taking matters into our own hands,” says Ben. “We’ve launched a full community consultation on the park. Over the last few years, local residents have made repeated requests to Sheffield City Council to make Stannington Play Park safe and clean so that it becomes an enjoyable place for children and families to

spend time together. We can’t wait any longer.”

Over 220 families have responded to the consultation launched by Action for Parks in Stannington.

70% of those who responded to the consultation say that they travel by car to safer, cleaner playgrounds, despite having Stannington Play Park within walking distance.

One group member said, “I avoid the park as my children’s clothes and shoes are always covered in mud. Instead, we drive to better parks where the children’s trainers don’t get ruined and the play equipment is new.”

The uneven, muddy ground around the play equipment is the most frequent concern. Families raised concerns about accessibility, saying that it’s particularly unsafe for anyone with mobility issues. One resident shared that she can’t bring her disabled relative to the park because the poorly maintained paths make the park too dangerous for her.

Ben Woollard says, “With the recent loss of Knowle Top [a listed community building - once the heartbeat of Stannington Village - that is now destined to become flats] our community is looking for some good news. While, thanks to our campaign, there have been some small improvements to the park we are asking for Sheffield City Council to finish the job and give our children a safe, clean and local place to play.”

Christmas arrangements and separated families Loreena Walker, a Chartered Legal Executive in the Family Law team at Jordans Solicitors discusses the importance of agreeing arrangements to spend time with your children at Christmas as early as possible.

For a lot of people Christmas is a special time of year, and if you no longer live together as a family unit, ensuring you spend time with your children at this time of year is often a parent’s main priority.

When it comes to spending time with your children, we cannot stress the importance of planning for the Christmas period as early as possible.

Whilst you may have thought about how you want to spend this time, remember this is a special time of the year for the children too and depending on their ages they may have their own wishes and feelings about how and where they want to spend Christmas. When deciding arrangements think about what is in the children’s best interests.

You should always speak with the other parent in the first instance to try and agree arrangements. Try to focus on this one issue and leave any others to one side. Getting angry and upset is not going to help matters.

If there have been disagreements in the past, it would be sensible to record these arrangements in writing so you both have a copy.

If arrangements cannot be agreed, then if it is appropriate in your circumstances, you should attend family mediation for a Mediation Information Assessment Meeting (MIAM). An independent and impartial third party can

help you discuss the issues and possibly help you reach an amicable solution.

However, if neither of these options are successful, then you may want to instruct a solicitor to write to the other parent as one last attempt to keep matters out of court. If this does not result in the desired outcome however, then a court application to determine this issue may be necessary.

It is now mandatory to attend a MIAM (unless you meet certain exemption criteria) and obtain a certificate confirming your attendance (or exemption) before you can make an application to the court. This process can take several weeks to complete. Once an application has been made to the court, depending on the complexity of the issues which are raised the matter could be resolved at the first hearing or could take several hearings. The court does not consider Christmas contact as an urgent issue hence why it is important to start thinking about making arrangements as early as possible.

Remember if you don’t receive the outcome, you would like this year, there will be other years and opportunities to spend time together which can be just as special. Whatever the arrangements your children will remember spending time with you and what you did, not what day this took place.

Supertram on track for £8.6m upgrade An £8.6 million funding package for South Yorkshire’s Supertram system has been given the green light by local leaders, to pay for urgent renewal work on the tracks and trams.

A further £4.3m has been approved to make the case to Government for significant additional investment in Supertram, as parts of the system come to the end of their working life.

Last month South Yorkshire’s leaders voted to take Supertram back into public ownership when its current contract with Stagecoach ends in 2024.

South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, said: ‘Supertram is a huge asset to South Yorkshire and is critical to the work we’re doing to fix our public transport system. This money will make big improvements for passengers with brand new trams and upgraded tracks.

“Supertram is part of South Yorkshire’s heritage and this money will help keep it on track into the future, as it becomes a publicly owned,

publicly operated venture. While significant work has already taken place to replace sections of track, parts of the system are coming to the end of their working life. So we’re also putting a case to Government for the investment we need to keep the system going for future generations.

“Fixing our public transport system will not be quick, cheap or easy. But we have started the important journey that we need to take to build the system that our region deserves; one that meets the needs of our communities and delivers a faster, smarter, greener public transport network that South Yorkshire can be proud of.”

The funding forms part of a £100 million Government grant to modernise the system, including track and infrastructure improvements and better facilities for passengers.

Results of a 2018 consultation showed strong support from the public for a proposed investment scheme in the Supertram system.

When you had to visit hospital on Christmas Day in town, The streets and drives were so car-free and roads were often empty.

Public transport was reliable with buses cheap and plenty.

Through your continued generosity we have been able to send 1040 shoe boxes and many cartons of aid to the children of Romania with the charity Children in Distress who have been supporting the children for the past 30 years.

Safety concerns ignored Dear Editor On page 2 of last weeks Look Local. Decision on Wood Royd Road Develeopment deferred. Also on page 11 was a letter about the development.

Only 1 week later Thursday 17 November more flooding highway barriers with flood pipes blocking the footpath.

Safety issues which have been raised for 3 years.

School children having to cross the road onto a narrow footpath., barriers blocking entrance into childrens play area. Safety concerns ignored for over 3 years. Bus stop right next to barriers, bus blocking sighting distance and road signs, its an accident waiting to happen. Police say its not a police matter, and its a council matter. Safety concerns on this road keep getting ignored.

After a goalless first half Thomas Poole opened the scoring with a deflected lob early in the second half. Lewis Mackaskill doubled the lead with a curling effort into the bottom corner. At the other end, Stocksbridge were lucky to have not gone behind. James Williamson rose highest from a corner, but his header was blocked on the line. He reacted quickest too to poke the ball goalwards, but this one was also cleared off the line, though with a bit less drama due to the lack of pace on the shot.

In the end, the game was pretty even in the first half and both defences remained very strong going into the end of the first half.

The second half started perfectly for the Steels. Ross Goodwin’s hard work kept Bridlington pinned back in their own left-back position, and Tomas Poole was able to turn over possession, and with the goalkeeper well off his line, Poole’s attempted lob took a heavy deflection, and the ball floated over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

Bridlington did rally as they looked to get right back into the game. They should have been level moments later but Jack Bulless’ free header was glanced wide. Bridlington continued to press forward but the Stocksbridge defence held firm and limited their shots on goal.

With the defence remaining strong, Stocksbridge’s attack were able to take advantage and double the lead. The initial corner was poor and went over everyone, but the ball was kept in and played back to Lewis Macaskill. He took a touch before curling the ball past everyone and into the bottom corner.

Macaskill continued to be a terror and easily could have a second when he was able to round Hitchcock. However, his goalwards finish would end up being blocked off by Benn Lewis who saved the day for Bridlington. Things would soon get worse for the Seasiders though. Bulless

The Flying Frenchman first raced for the club during their second tier days in 2015 where he scored 151+22 points from 21 appearances.

Phoenix Gymnastics Academy is a small non-profit community amateur sports club. They set up in August 2013, originally running from Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre. In March 2017 the club had to move into a dedicated facility due to the growth of the club and SCLC no longer being able to provide the training times required for the gymnasts. The club has continued to grow and flourish since its move. So much so that last month they were finalists of the What's on 4 Kids Awards for the Most Loved non-profit / charity organisation. The club are now in a position to expand again due to its success and growth. A funding proposal has been submitted for them to expand into a new purpose-built facility, within their current industrial estate, which if granted will be completed at the end of 2023.

Tenacious runs at ten-mile events

Ten-mile races seemed to be the order of the day on Sunday as Penistone runners travelled to Derby and Tadcaster to compete in ten-mile road races.

The first lady back for Penistone was Chloe Worth who finished just outside the medals in the ladies over45 category in fourth place in 1-43-19.

Jonathan Bentley took part in the Gainsborough 10k and picked up bronze in the men’s over55 category. His time was an impressive 37-54. At the latest Peak Raid orienteering event Steve Sanders collected a score of 480 points which placed him 14th overall. By completing the Conwy Half Marathon Keith Gordon completed the tough Four Castles series in North Wales.

David Napier and Rob Davies made the trip to Derby posting times of 1-11-12 and 1-1747 respectively. Six athletes made the trip to Tadcaster. First back for the club in a new personal best for the 10-mile distance was James Mumford who placed 26th in a field of over 700 runners in a time of 58-20.

Also breaking the 60-minute barrier was Andrew Heppenstall posting a time of 5858. Dawn Broom was the first lady back for the club and placed second overall in the ladies' over55 category in a time of 1-13-53.

In the latest round of the Winter Handicap Tracy Woodward collected first place with Helen Mines collecting 2nd place and Sarah Norman third. The fastest lady on the night was Suzanne McGill in 34-51, the fastest man was George Parr in 26-51. Matt Robinson was first in the age-graded competition.

In the junior competition, the winners were Lauren Lees (under11 girls), Millie Lees (under13 girls), Graihagh Turner (under15 girls), Arthur Philips (under11 boys), Vincent Hillman (under13 boys), Flynn Rogers (under15 boys) and Oliver France (under17 boys). On the parkrun scene George Parr was first at the Penistone parkrun in 17-40.

WINTER CUP Heavy rainfall over the last week has affected several days of play at Stocksbridge Golf Club. However, the members are a hardy bunch and in between the rainy spells, there has been some play.

On 19 November the Gents played for the 6th round of the Winter Cup. Tony Peers (17) triumphed with 34 points, playing steady golf for his round. Three players finished one point behind and were separated on countback in the following order - Neil Elliott (8), Craig Allen (6) and Mark Huckerby (14).

Earlier in the week the Dragons Section competed for a Winter Fiddle. Les Wright (12) won with 35 points. John Leaning (16) also scored 35 points but lost out to Les on countback. Kel Meegan (16) and Frank Milnes (18) both finished with 33 points, but Kel took third place on countback.

Lastly, on 20 November, Brian Dobb (11) won the Sunday Pro's Prize with 32 points.

Three other players - Andrew Finney (0) in second place, Nick Broomhead (10) in third and Nasser Hassan (13) in fourth - all finished with 32 points as well but lost out to Brian on countback.

Hard-work pays dividends Stocksbridge 19-0 Hornsea

A hard-fought three tries to nil win over Hornsea RUFC earned Globe Holidays-sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby a second successive home victory and a jump to 6th place in the Counties 4 Yorkshire league ladder.

Still missing several first-team regulars, Head Coach Andy Lawrence was still able to select a strong squad with Ben Tyers and Pat O’Leary forming a useful partnership in midfield, outside the recalled Jack Spencer at fly-half.

Clock Tower Andy Beal returned to partner Vice Captain Sam Whitaker in the 2nd row, whilst versatile front-rower Ricky Rooney moved to the hooking berth. There was a welcome return to action for last season’s skipper Adam Roles-Middlehurst taking his place on the replacements bench. The rain halted just prior to kick-off, as the home side chose to attack the slope in the first half. Kicking off with the match ball kindly supplied by Charles-

worth Landscapes, Stocksbridge immediately went on the front foot with the pack dominating their opponents, Beal, Whitaker and the consistent Woodcock making good ground in forward charges.

Stocksbridge went close to opening the scoring when No 8 Jack ‘milky’ Martin was tackled just short of the line, and again when Tyers found supporting full back Saddington who was held up inches from the whitewash. With almost all the play in the Hornsea territory, the visitors gave away a succession of penalties, and a deliberate knock-on saw the visiting fly-half dispatched to the sin bin for a ten-minute spell.

Stocksbridge took advantage of the superior numbers, and a massive scrum effort pushed the Hornsea pack back over their try line for Martin to plunge on the ball and open the scoring close enough for Spencer to convert.

and possession, and a score of Stocksbridge Rugby 7pts – Hornsea nil.

Hornsea came out fighting for the 2nd stanza and was forced to defend their line. The ‘blue wall’ held firm with some excellent cover tackling and a determination to not let them pass. Stocksbridge gradually regained their ascendancy and a well-worked line out won by Reece ‘diesel’ Aspin, began a forwards rumble which resulted in the ‘clock tower’ Andy Beal, powering over from close range to extend the lead.

The aggressive home defence kept Hornsea at bay, as Stocksbridge were reduced to 14 men for a spell when back-rower Johnny Gill received a yellow card and a sin-binning for a high tackle.

Further pressure nearly produced a score for the rampaging Bowman, before that man Frith found space for Tyers to delay his pass as John Saddington, sponsored by Mr

N George, burst thru a gap and rounded the despairing visiting full-back to score the 3rd try, which Spencer improved to leave a final score of Stocksbridge Rugby 19pts – Hornsea nil.

The Goodlad Contracting Man of the Match winner was named as Ricky ‘Rooney’ James, sponsored

by Wilson Construction, for a hard-working display on both sides of the ball. Most observers would agree that it was an encouraging all-round team performance that contributed to the victory.

Head Coach, Andy Lawrence was understandably pleased with the performance, ‘we worked hard, particularly in defence to shut them out’, he said, adding ‘our commitment to training and to each other is beginning to pay dividends, and the boys are enjoying these wins’.

Stocksbridge Rugby now face a run of 3 tricky but winnable games on the road away at Leeds Modernians, Hornsea and Mosborough

before hosting Knaresborough at Coal Pit Lane on 17th December in the traditional Christmas Jumper Game, with a 2.15pm kick off.
