South Yorkshire bus and tram fares will be capped at £2 from 1 November, as Mayor Oliver Coppard sets out bold plans to combat the cost-of-living crisis.

The £600k boost from the Mayoral Combined Authority will see passengers save up to 50% on some trips and reduce the cost of over 700,000 journeys that cost more than £2.

World Cup Team visits Local Primary School The Greek national rugby team visited Wharncliffe Side Primary school yesterday.

The team are based in Sheffield for the rugby league world cup and had played their inaugural match in the tournament the night before in Doncaster.

Wharncliffe Side were lucky enough to host the players and coaching staff, as their very own Y6 tag rugby team have recently won through to the next round of

the School Games tournament and will be one of the teams representing Sheffield in next month’s South Yorkshire finals.

“These events are amazing,” said Wharncliffe Side’s Head of PE Mr Hartley. “It really enthuses the children and has generated extra interest in the World Cup. We will all be supporting Greece as our second team now.”

Adam and Jack raise £1,000 for St Luke’s with Three Peaks Challenge Adam, who lives in Chapeltown, and Jack, who lives in Bolton upon Dearne, set themselves a £1,000 target and by the time they crossed the finish line they were delighted to have reached a total of £1,068.

“We are so pleased that Adam and Jack completed the challenge and raised so much money for out patient care,” said St Luke’s Community Fundraiser Ellie Matthews.

WALKERS Adam Frith and Jack Deakin have raised more than £1,000 for St Luke’s Hospice after completing a tough 24 mile walking challenge in tribute to the charity’s 24 hour care for the people of Sheffield.

Adam’s dad Stephen was a patient at St Luke’s and it was following his death that Adam pledged to raise money in recognition of the care and support the family received.

Adam, who works for South Yorkshire Police, was joined by friend and colleague Jack Deakin for the famous Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, which takes walkers through the stunning Yorkshire scenery of the Dales National Park, starting with smallest of the peaks, Pen-yghent, before going on over 12 hours to tackle the peaks of Ingleborough and Whernside, climbing a final total of 1,585 metres!

Mollymae Woods, 22, a former Ecclesfield Comprehensive School pupil, will be representing Sheffield in the finals taking place in Birmingham on the 22nd of April.

Mollymae left school to become an apprentice and pursue a career in the hairdresser industry, a Self Employed stylist, she is currently based at Marble Makeup Studio in Sheffield.

Gymnastics dad runs 10k races for charities

A Dad from Stocksbrige who attempted to raise money to help his local gymnastics club, where his daughter attends, has smashed his target and raised a ‘whopping’ amount of money.

Phil Lamb, age 36 ran two 10k races and hosted a race night to smash his target of £1000.

Phil has been fundraising for the gymnastics club since April 2022. Covid 19 hit the club hard so these funds will be used to get the club back on its feet and buy new equipment so they can continue to provide children with the opportunity to participate in gymnastics.

The dad presented a cheque of just under £2000 to Stocksbridge Gymnastics club, last week.

He told Look Local “I managed to raise just under 2k, from arranging a charity race night with my

wife Sadie, who was heavily involved in making it so successful and running the Hull and Sheffield 10k over the last 6 months and I have the Blackpool 10k booked in for February 2023.”

Heather Clough started the Stocksbridge Gymnastics Club in February 2017 at Stocksbridge High School.

As the club grew classes were extended to the leisure centre and ran two sites. The club moved fully to Stocksbridge Leisure Centre in August 2020 during the pandemic. Members range from 2 years to 16 years old with approx 130 members. The club operates pre-school , rec-

reational and competition squad classes.

On Sunday 16th October 2022 Stocksbridge Gymnastics club attended the Yorkshire general gymnastics Southern heats competition.

Welcome to the first of an occasional feature from Upper Don Renewable Energy Who are we?

We are all things energy!

Our voluntary group aims to help residents fight the increasing (and frightening) energy costs and lower their carbon footprint.

Our group includes Penistone and Stocksbridge Energy Information Group who have recently organised public events and home visits showing how sources of renewable energy have been used in local homes.

What is our purpose? (a) promote the need for improved energy efficiency and renewable energy generation due to the interests of climate change, peak oil and equitable use of resources; (b) promote awareness of environmental and related issues and support for educational initiatives related to renewable energy; (c) support educational initiatives related to renewable energy; (d) install and maintain community-owned renewable energy generation.

How can we help you?

Our current priorities are around reducing energy costs with information about more effective insulation, cheaper lighting alternatives and reduction of heat loss.

How much will it cost?

Practically nothing!! We only ask for donations towards refreshments at our public events and a minimal charge for a visit with our thermal imaging camera.

Mayor slams 'chaotic' shelving of Transport Bill

Responding to the news that the Transport Bill has been shelved, and with it the creation of Great British Railways, South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard said:

“Earlier this year the government announced a competition to decide where to establish the Headquarters of Great British Railways – the company established to run the rail network.

Here in South Yorkshire, we worked hard to put in a strong bid for those Headquarters to be built in Doncaster, so that the railways across Great Britain would have been run from a base in our region.

And yet today it was announced that the process may not go forward. For many people who use our railways it will feel all too familiar; it’s been delayed, it's no longer clear when it might arrive, and there's a strong likelihood the whole thing will be cancelled.

Maybe I shouldn't be, but I am shocked that the government would ask us to invest so much time, effort and energy investing in a bid for Great British Railways, but then simply pull the project with no notice, warning or communication.

Today’s announcement from the government on Great British Railways would be bad enough at any time, but coming so soon after their refusal to properly support our efforts to try and save Doncaster Sheffield Airport it is a damming indictment of this government's commitment to levelling-up.

This chaotic approach to governing is causing a huge amount of damage to our region and our country. They must do better.”

Community Hub Community Fridge announces plans for a free Eat Your Pumpkin Event on Saturday 29th October from 10am to 1pm to join the Pumpkin Rescue movement New research from environmental charity Hubbub has revealed a terrifying 22.2 million pumpkins are predicted to go to waste this year, despite food bills being at an all-time high and more pressure than ever on households to make food to go further.

The survey of 2,000 UK residents, reveals that 56% of pumpkins bought for carving last Halloween were not eaten, meaning this year Brits are expected to throw away more than £32million worth of pumpkins!

Hubbub and its network of community fridges aims to tackle the issue by running a series of pumpkin-themed events, where residents can learn how to cook with their pumpkins, whilst saving money and helping the planet.

Chapelgreen Community Hub Community Fridge will be hosting “Eat Your Pumpkins Event on Saturday October 29th This free event will see the Chapelgreen Community come together to celebrate Halloween and learn all the tricks to get the best treats from a pumpkin. The first fifty families will be given one free pumpkin per family. We will be demonstrating how to cook pumpkin although this activity is free we ask that people book an appointment for this activity. Our activities will offer advice from batch cooking recipes. Those attending will discover a range of recipes that use every part of the pumpkin except the stalk! Other activities will include a child’s pumpkin fancy dress, pumpkin carving, craft activities using pumpkins, children’s quiz and a pumpkin tasting session.

Ellen Rutherford, Head of Food at Hubbub said: “Pumpkins are more than just a Halloween decoration.

They are a cheap, nutritious and versatile source of food, which can go a long way and are great for feeding a crowd.

Even if a pumpkin is labelled a ‘carving pumpkin’, it is still perfectly edible.

tackling the 22 million pumpkins predicted to go to waste this Halloween and Hubbub has plenty of resources to show you how.”

“People might find it easier to throw away their pumpkin carvings, particularly if they’re juggling the pressures of costume making and entertaining too.

However we’re really keen to spread the word that cooking this delicious vegetable can wait until after the madness of Halloween is over. Only 8% of those who celebrate Halloween freeze the flesh from their pumpkins to use another time – a handy tip for those under time pressure.

The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) voted earlier to create an arm's-length company to manage the network.

It is part of a wider ambition to upgrade Supertram and create an integrated transport network of trams, buses and trains.

Stagecoach runs the service at present, but the contract expires in March 2024.

South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard said previously that bringing Su-

pertram into public control would help it to be integrated into "wider plans" to improve public transport across the county.

When it first opened in 1994, Supertram was owned by a public body before it was privatised and sold

to Stagecoach in 1997.

Stagecoach is responsible for running the trams and day-to-day maintenance of the system, though the infrastructure is owned by the SYMCA. The £240m network covers Shef-

field and was extended to include a tram-train service to Rotherham in 2018.

A £100m government grant to modernise parts of the network was recently secured by SYMCA.

Free Events, LowCost Activities and Warm Places to go Planned for Barnsley Town Centre this Autumn

As Halloween approaches, Barnsley Council is orchestrating a programme of free and low-cost events to continue driving activity in the town centre throughout October.

The Glass Works will play host to pumpkin-carving workshops, which will be delivered in Barnsley Market by Sand in Your Eye (SIYE) artists over the course of three days (27, 28 and 29 October).

Free and bookable sessions are available at 10.45am, 11.45am, 1.00pm, 2.00pm and 3.00pm each day.

These workshops will take place upstairs inside the market, adjacent to the Tiny Tarn play area.

Online bookings are going to be available soon so keep an eye out to make sure you

As part of the family festivities, live giant pumpkin carving will also take place downstairs in the May Day Green entrance.

Elsewhere in The Glass Works, the Library at the Lightbox will be hosting free activities this spooky season on set days from 10.00am until 11.00am. These include a Haunted House Crafts session on 25 October and a Halloween Bunting Craft workshop on 28 October.

The library now has their #PublicLivingRoom up and running as part of a national initiative started by Camerados. Public Living Rooms are spaces with no agenda where people can relax, connect with others and be themselves.

Running from 1 October to 8 January, there will be a whole host of free family activities taking place alongside, including LEGO® displays to be found across the town centre.

College staff will be based on the lower floor of Barnsley Markets, from 10.00am and 2.00pm, on Friday 14 October giving expert advice about Digital courses.

Anyone is welcome to speak to the staff about the benefits of increasing their digital skills and their knowledge and experience.

The College is offering digital courses from Level 1 (beginners) to Level 3 (advanced) in a range of subject areas including Cybersecurity, Digital Marketing, Network-

ing and Programming. Some courses are free to study and funding is also available for certain programmes.

Two free Introduction to Digital Industries taster session also will be held on Wednesday 26 October on the upper floor of the Market Kitchen, within Barnsley Markets. The first session will place between 9.15am and 12.15pm and the second session will be between 1.00pm and 4.00pm. The train operator has released the information – including a map showing the location of each incident - as part of an ongoing appeal to raise awareness of how dangerous this criminal activity is.

Tricia Williams, chief operating officer at Northern, said: “It’s bewildering to think some people find targeting trains in this way is some kind of ‘sport’ – and the fact it’s happening more than once a week is shocking.

“Whilst the 69 affected services represent less than 0.01% of our annual fleet movements, the impact on those caught up in one of these events is significant.”

In February, one of Northern’s drivers (Ian Birch) was left covered in blood after his cab window was shat-

tered by a brick thrown in Clifton, Greater Manchester; and in June, a 15-week-old baby (Esme Emmerson) was showered with glass after the train she was travelling on with her parents was attacked on approach to Hull, East Yorkshire.

Williams added: “We know these attacks are rarely carried out by a ‘lone wolf ’ and are more often the action of a group – where peer pressure and ‘group mob mentality’ can be a contributing factor.

“Our message to them is simple: this behaviour is reckless, it’s dangerous and it must stop.”

As part of Northern’s ongoing fleet upgrade, high-definition CCTV that can be monitored in real-time by British Transport Police is being installed on its trains.

They are also making use of the ‘what3words’ system to identify the exact location of this activity. Footage and geographical data will be supplied by Northern to the police to assist with any criminal prosecutions.

Acting Supt Lorna McEwan said: "This photograph provides a startling visual which brings to life the danger involved in throwing things onto the tracks.

“Obstructing the railway is a stupid, reckless and mindless act. Placing items on the line or throwing rocks and stones at passing trains risks the lives of passengers and rail staff.

"Safety on the railway is our priority. This is not a harmless prank - it is criminal, it is dangerous, and we will prosecute those responsible."

Anyone who witnesses items being thrown at trains or sees someone placing items on the track should contact British Transport Police immediately by texting 61016 or by calling 0800 40 50 40.

Alternatively, people can call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Northern operates nearly 2,000 services a day to more than 500 stations across the North of England.

School dedicates area of reflection in memory of HM Queen Elizabeth II

Mayor of Stocksbridge, was also in attendance.

The school’s four Head Students spoke of their memories of the Queen and how her many years of dedication and service offered inspiration to young people today.

On Thursday 20 September 2022, Stocksbridge High School fell silent for a minute of reflection in memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This act of remembrance was replicated across schools in Minerva Learning Trust which meant that over 5000 young people from across Sheffield participated.

At the same time, a small ceremony was held to dedi-

cate part of the school’s garden to the memory of the late Queen and to create a space for quiet reflection. A tulip tree, a favourite of Her Majesty, will be planted in the garden and the area marked with a plaque. The student body was represented by the school council as well as governors and representatives of the wider Trust. Councillor Mark Whittaker, the Deputy

Equip Outdoor Technologies has teamed up with the Peak District National Park Foundation to inspire more young people to discover - and care for - the countryside.

The Derbyshire-based outdoor kit specialist - home of the Rab and Lowe Alpine brands – is supporting the Foundation as a Gold Peak Partner and will work with the National Park Authority on its Ambassador Schools programme.

The Ambassador Schools initiative aims to build relationships between the Peak District, schools and communities. It promotes the benefits of outdoor learning and enables young people to enjoy, care for and take pride in the National Park.

Hogg Wins the Wilson Cup

Andy Hogg triumphed in the final of the Stocksbridge Golf Club Singles Knock-out competition to win the Wilson Cup. The competition started back in April and was played through 5 rounds until the final on 22 October.

Andy played Chay Murphy in the match-play format final in warm, autumnal weather.

He established an early advantage and was 4 up after 6 holes. From that early lead he held out for the remainder of the round to win by 4 and 3.

After the game Andy said: "I had an early lead, but Chay never gave up. I'm absolutely chuffed to bits to have closed the match out." Both players are pictured on the first tee before the match started.

Earlier in the week the Dragons Section concluded the section's Summer Cup competition, The final round was won by Charlie Dale (24) with 35 points. Dave Stringer (13) and John Leaning (20) both finished one point behind, but Dave took second place on countback.

After many rounds over the summer months, the best 10 scoring rounds for each player determined the final standings for the Dragons Summer Cup. Doug Needham was the overall winner with a highly credible 75 points. Mick Bellamy was second with 71 points and Les Wright was third with 65 points.

The Gents Winter Cup Round 2 took place on 22 October and there was a large field out enjoying the sunny conditions. Alf Pearson (28) was the overall winner with 40 points. Eric Wilkinson (8) was second with 38 points, the same score as Nick Broomhead (13), but with a better back 9.

Church out of vase Saturday 22nd October 2022 Isuzu FA Vase FC St Helens 2-1 Penistone Church

of PCFC supporters arrived at the ground to swell the crowd.

The pitch was a little uneven with a good covering of long grass.

St Helens kicked off and the first cross of the game saw Chris Snaith pick up a minor injury. His clearance was flicked on by Brett Lovell and Nathan Keightley beat the onrushing keeper but the chance was ruled out for offside.

Church quickly settled into their stride and had an early spell of pressure. 3 corners and a low shot well saved saw Church's confidence grow.

They pressed high and won the ball back on several occasions.

St Helens had a couple of openings but they did not convert. Church picked up their game again and showed promise they then had a great chance after 36 minutes but the shot from 20 yards went wide left of the goal.

Church failed to clear and St Helens recycled the ball on the left of the box. A low cross was met by a stooping header that Snaith tipped onto the post. Joe Barker headed the rebound into the centre of the empty net.

A swift move through the middle of the park opened up the Church defence out to the right and then back in. A crisp finish to the right of goal saw Joe Barker score his second.

St Helens 2-0 PCFC Church needed to turn the match around and quickly.

After 60 minutes Reece High replaced Maasai Dearlove to change the dynamics up front.

Church had their chances, a Tom Charlesworth cross eluded the keeper but St Helens recovered.

St Helens broke quickly and with Church chasing the game, they split the church defence again. This time hitting the base of the right post.

Joe Barker again caused trouble in the Church box, Snaith pulled off 2 great close range saves.

Goal 79 minutes.

A great low cross from Nathan Keightley found Reece High on the far post. He bundled the ball into the bottom right of the St Helens goal.

Church could have won this match with their first half performance.

However, St Helens rallied in the second half and 2 goals in 4 minutes settled this FA Cup Vase tie.

Ball canters to first place Penistone runner Martin Ball took first place at the 5 mile Canal Canter which was also the final race of the Bradfield Canal League. Martin completed the course in 32-18.

Clubmate Simon Pike was third in 34-00 followed by Dan Limb in fourth in 34-07.

Simon and Dan were 2nd and 3rd overall in the series.

Harriet Drouin and Sarah JonesMorris took on the Gower 50 miler which involved a mix of road and trail. They finished in a time of 14-06 to gain 16th and 17th place in the ladies category.

Three Penistone runners took on the fast Leeds Abbey Dash 10k in rainy conditions. First back was Gareth Irvine who broke the 40 minute barrier in a time of 3933. Gareth was followed by Luke (57-15) and Dianne McGuinness (1-18-29).

Keith Gordon took first over70 male at the Bangor City Half Marathon.

On the parkrun scene Dawn Broom achieved the remarkable feat of completing 450 parkruns whilst taking part in the Millhouses parkrun. George Parr claimed first spot at the Penistone parkrun in a time of 18-03. Lisa

STEELS BACK TO WINNING WAYS took a step forward and finished into the bottom corner.

Stocksbridge Park Steels got back to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Shildon.

The Steels got off to a positive start. Lewis Macaskill, making his first start since his injury, tried to catch Shildon goalkeeper Matthew Bateman out when he was off his line but couldn’t keep his shot on target. He’d cause several other problems, almost setting up Ify Ofoegbu not long after as well, and showed he was good value for the start.

Eventually though, Stocksbridge would get the goal their play had deserved. The ball was played in from the right and Luke Rawson got it, back to the goal. He was able to turn his defender though and tuck the ball into the bottom corner, giving the Steels the lead.

Two minutes later, Stocksbridge had doubled their lead. The Steels got a free kick from deep, and Tomas Poole put in a great delivery.

The Shildon defence completely turned off as Mitch Langton controlled the ball,

Shildon needed to fight to get back into the game but they took those words too seriously. As they attacked, Langton fouled Dean Thexton.

Shildon’s star man reacted badly, stamping on Langton’s leg. This caused a fracas between the players that could have boiled over into something nastier. After the referee had calmed the situation down, he talked to his assistants before producing a straight red for Thexton.

In the second half, Shildon started off as the better side though. Perhaps the Railwaymen knew there was nothing for them to lose so thought they might as well go for it.

But while they had a lot of the ball, and Stocksbridge did give away some silly free kicks, they lacked much cut-

ting edge. Obviously missing Thexton after his sending off, they never really did test Harrison Davison-Hale despite having more of the ball.

After being fairly poor for the first twenty minutes of the second half, Stocksbridge were able to settle back down and take control of the match. They could count themselves unlucky that a third wasn’t scored either. Good play between substitute Alex O’Connor and Kurtis Turner gave the latter some space just outside of the box but he could only curl the ball around the far post. Rawson also looked to turn his defender and score again, but this shot would be well saved by Bateman.

Shildon did have the final shot of note, with a free kick from the Railwaymen being well saved by Davison-Hale.

The young goalkeeper would claim a clean sheet though on the way to Stocksbridge claiming a vital three points.

Chapeltown hit six Sheffield South 2-6 Chapeltown RBL Chapeltown visited third place Sheffield South on Sunday, and took the lead after 27 minutes when good work from man of the match Josh Ball down the right, ended with him crossing for Morgan Cowell to volley home. The lead only lasted 3 minutes as South pulled it back level on 30 mins.

Sub Adam Todd then found Carter in the area, who danced past the defender and finished well.

The scoring was then completed when Carter completed his hat trick, with Mosley threading a ball through, and Carter dinking the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper to make it 7 wins from 7 games.

A minute later Legion regained the lead when a defence splitting ball from Mitch Savage found Jay Carter to slide past the keeper.

Mitch Savage then turned scorer as an Alex Mosley free kick was finished first time.

On the hour mark Sheffield South made it 3-2 and were pressing for an equaliser in a monsoon of rain.

Paddy Carrig restored the two goal advantage heading home a Mitch Savage corner with 10 minutes left.

Back to back home wins Stocksbridge Rugby 33-12 Nestle Rowntree

brought a series of penalties as the visitors struggled to hold on & Pearson converted a simple penalty to nudge the home side ahead. The lead was short lived as some weak defence allowed the visitors space to break the line for a further score to retake the lead.

After a disappointing performance last week, Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby bounced back with a clinical demolition of visitors from York, Nestle Rowntree, gaining a try bonus point in the process of a 33pts to 12pts victory.

On a warm autumnal afternoon at Coal Pit Lane, a sizeable crowd were treated to some fine attacking play & resolute defence from a determined Stocksbridge squad.

Missing ‘clock tower’ Beal, industrious back rower Newton & that man Frith all absent thru injury, Head Coach Andy Lawrence used his playing roster to the full, bringing in big Jordan ‘Spud’ Fletcher, evergreen playmaker Ricky Christopherson along with flyer Callum ‘whippet’ Green.

Ricky ‘Rooney’ James & veteran Scotty Bowskill also brought a wealth of experience to the bench. The match

balls were kindly supplied by Charlesworth Landscapes.

The early signs were worrying for the home side as they failed to deal with the kick off, lost possession at a line out & gave away a succession of penalties as the Referee made his mark on the game.

by Mr Mark Logan, to plunge over for a score, Pearson unable to convert.

Just before the break burly prop Joe Smith was given a straight red card for illegal use of an elbow in a tackle, & will now face the League’s disciplinary commission to determine his fate. Half time: Stocksbridge Rugby 15pts – Nestle Rowntree 12pts.

Whatever Head Coach Andy Lawrence said to his troops at half time seemed to work, as

Stocksbridge, even with a man down, dominated the territory & possession & controlled the majority of the 2nd half. The visitors were desperate in defence & Pearson capitalised on an error to slot a simple penalty to extend the lead. With Christopherson calling the shots & bustling centre Liam O’Leary causing mayhem & destruction in the visitors defensive line, a try was sure to come & it did in the shape of hooker Mikey Hartley darting over from short range to extend the lead.

The visitors were reduced to 14 men when a yellow card was issued for a high tackle on Scotty Bowskill, Stocksbridge took full advantage & a rumbling line out lead by Rees ‘Diesel’ Aspin again proved too hot to handle as Hartley completed his brace from close range to claim the deserved bonus point try, with the successful conversion from Bowskill, who completed the scoring with a further penalty just before the final whistle.

Final score: Stocksbridge Rugby 33pts – Nestle Rowntree 12pts.
