URGENT IMPROVEMENTS NEEDED SAYS MP The new 57 'Stocksbridge Flyer' was launched by Stagecoach on the 2nd October to connect Stocksbridge and the Upper Don Valley with Hillsborough and the city centre, replacing the previous 57 and the SupertramLink buses.

Since then Miriam Cates, the MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, has been inundated with dozens of reports from constituents who have been left stranded when buses haven’t turned up, or have witnessed buses failing to stop because the vehicle is already full.

Calling for action to address the problems with the new route, Mrs Cates said: "The recent changes to the Stagecoach bus services in Stocksbridge and the Upper Don Valley have resulted in severe disruption for passengers.

When I met with Stagecoach recently they assured me that the new 57 ‘Stocksbridge Flyer’ would be more reliable than the previous service, but this is clearly not the case.

"Local residents rely on this service to get to work, school, hospital appointments etc. and without these buses our communities are cut off. I know there are also problems with other local services, including the withdrawal of the 135 service connecting residents in Chapeltown, High Green and Grenoside.”

"I will continue to do everything I can to put pressure on those who run and fund our bus services. In recent days I have contacted both Stagecoach and the Mayor Oliver Coppard to feed back the problems that constituents have shared with me and ask for urgent action to address them. I will also be meeting with the Secretary of State for Transport to raise these issues and ask for more help for South Yorkshire to improve its Bus Services Improvement Plan.”

SUPPORT FOR FAMILIES AFFECTED BY SUICIDE Children and young people who’ve lost loved ones to suicide help develop support for other families Children, young people and families from South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw who have been bereaved by suicide have developed a new toolkit to support families like their own in the aftermath of losing someone to suicide.

South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw has a higher suicide rate than the England average, and the impact of suicide is complex and the effects are profound; not only on the family

and friends of the person who has died but also on the wider community. In recognition of the importance that those who are bereaved from or affected by suicide receive the support they need, partners across the health and social care system are working together to develop a consistent approach which is informed by the experiences of those living in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw.

The toolkit is available on the Chilypep website here: chilypep.org.uk. Copies of it will be given to children, young people and families following a bereavement by suicide.

Bids in to create leisure destination in north Sheffield its much-loved Ski Village in 2012. If successful, the Levelling Up funding would be used to kick start the ambition to create a Country Park in the City, cementing Sheffield’s reputation as the “Outdoor City”.

The investment will pave the way for a regional leisure destination and a valued amenity for Sheffield residents – especially those living in the nearby communities.

If the bid is successful, the project would see: Over the summer, a further two Levelling Up bids were submitted

by Sheffield City Council to the government which could result in development of community facilities in Heeley and much needed investment to facilitate development at Parkwood Springs.

The Council has bid for more than £19million funding for ambitious plans for Parkwood Springs. Parkwood Springs is a prominent feature of Sheffield’s landscape – a well-known asset that has been under-utilised since a fire destroyed

Improved access to Parkwood Springs Access to the site would be improved for all, with a particular focus on increasing active travel and public transport provision to the area and improving approaches to the site with ‘Grey to Green’ type investment used elsewhere in the City.

Site clearance, clean up and enabling works The area of the former ski slope would be prepared for future redevelopment as a regional leisure destination with all derelict re-

mains from the previous ski slope removed.

Investment in trails and wayfinding Funding will be used to deliver new and upgrade existing walking paths and mountain bike trails, extending the area of the site which can be accessed and making the whole site more accessible to people of all ages and abilities. With a new visitor centre and bike hub, plus information boards, event space and improved boundaries, Parkwood Springs will be strengthened as a destination in its own right.

The bids are currently being assessed by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities and a decision is expected to be reached in the coming months.

Neill Schofield, Joint Chair of the Friends of Parkwood Springs, said: “We think the City Council's bid is coherent, and a really well-considered plan. Parts of the site need substantial work to remove the legacy of previous uses and to make them safe. There needs to be very substantial improvements to access, and a range of other improvements to the site. Taken together these actions will make Parkwood Springs an attractive destination for people from near and far."

Menopause festival for Health and Care Staff

A first ever Menopause festival – ‘Meno Fest 22’ – has been launched to support health and care staff and encourage workplaces to become menopause friendly.

Nearly 34,000 health and care staff across South Yorkshire are going through the Menopause and often additional support and awareness could make a difference to those colleagues.

The festival, held on Saturday 8 October at Bramall Lane Conference Centre Sheffield, is part of NHS South Yorkshire’s commitment to increase the awareness

of Menopause and highlight the support available for the NHS and Social Care workforce across the region. With support from trained menopause advocates by Henpicked ‘Menopause in the workplace’ programme, the day will have a range of speakers from menopause advocates and other specialists and will host a variety of stalls from local businesses.

Brigitte Kaviani, Head of Health and Wellbeing at NHS South Yorkshire ICB, said “We are so excited to be able to host this event in South Yorkshire which will help in raising the awareness of menopause.

FORMAL COMPLAINT: October 9, 2022 SYSTEMATIC NON-RUNNING OF THE 57 FROM STOCKSBRIDGE, AND LATE-RUNNING 57As. Dear David Rich (Commercial Manager, Stagecoach Yorkshire) [cc Miriam Cates MP, LookLocal newspaper editor & staff] The 17.52pm 57 from Stocksbridge did not run, and the 19.58 57A from Sheffield was 35 minutes late at Carr Road Deepcar on the admission of the driver. This bus came back as a 57A whereas the 57 did not run (as confirmed by passengers waiting at Stocksbridge and who later got on the 57A, who had been waiting for the 57).

This is a now established pattern. It’s far more often the 57A that you see than the 57. So Stagecoach is not providing its Stocksbridge Flyer, never mind at two an hour. It is often running one Stocksbridge Crawler once a hour and that’s it. The service Stagecoach hails the Stocksbridge Flyer is largely a mirage. Stagecoach cares only about Worrall -- that is, getting their fares -- and could not give an (expletive deleted) about Stocksbridge/Deepcar.

What is even more appalling here is that Stagecoach has received lots of Government COVID money up to March 2023, so this money is not using this to maintain services but to cream off the taxpayer.

Now, according to the SY Mayoral Authority, buses out here would not be subsidised unless it were uneconomic to provide even just two buses an hour, so it appears Stagecoach has pruned to this bare bone so that come next March it will try to make out that even this somehow is not commercially viable so as to apply for funding.

Stagecoach need to be told where to get off or stripped of permission to run a service out to Stocksbridge/ Deepcar.

Bus reliability unacceptable The severe reliability issues we have seen on the new 57/57a (Stocksbridge-Sheffield) bus route are completely unacceptable. I have been in regular contact with Stagecoach at both Managing Director level and with those managing operations at the North Sheffield depot over the last few weeks and months.

Much of this communication has been focused on pressing Stagecoach to deal with cancellations and delays.

It is clear that reliability has remained unacceptable since the timetable change and that is why I intend to meet with the Managing Director of Stagecoach Yorkshire as soon as possible. This will also be an opportunity to raise specific concerns given to me by local residents about the new timetable and route.

I have also written to the South Yorkshire Mayor to ask that he uses the Bus Recovery Grant funding to support critical services like the 57. The geographical isolation of Stocksbridge, Deepcar, Oughtibridge and Wharncliffe Side make this support even more important.

To increase the sustainability of the route in the longterm, we need to get more people using buses – but this is only possible if the current service is reliable and frequent. I will continue to challenge Stagecoach as the current situation simply cannot continue.

Oughtibridge battled hard but were unable to prevent County from continuing their 100% winning start to the season. When Kate Davies rifled in from 25 yards it looked like game on but an under pressure ref buckled to County objections of a hand ball in the build up. Next up is a home County Cup tie against Crofton Sports at the War Memorial on Sunday, KO 2pm. The following week sees the big FA Cup 3rd Qualifying round tie against the Nottingham Uni Students. Stocksbridge has an away fixture against one of two Hallamshire teams in the division on Sunday 09 October. There was a mixed start to the tie, with Aaron Al-

cock playing at number 3, winning his match 3-1 but Mark Wingfield losing 3-0. The next matches saw Ed Walker at 1 and Alex Timmins-Jones at 2.

Ed showed his class by beating their number 1 player 3-0. This meant that Alex needed to get at least 2 games to secure the victory but unfortunately went down 3-1. This meant that the tie was drawn, with the games at 7-7. Therefore the rules state that the winner is the team with the highest aggregate points over the fixture. Further disappointment was to be had when the count came in at 177-174 in favour of Hallamshire to secure the 4 bonus points.

Despite the close loss, it was against one of the league favourites which shows that Stocksbridge will be very competitive in Division 3.

League Points System There are 4 matches which are each best of 5 games. The players are seeded and will play the matching seed from the opponents team. 15 points are needed to win each game (or by 2 clear points, if the scores are level at 15 all) with a league point awarded for each game won. The winning team is the one with the most games (or if a tie, the most aggregated points), with 4 bonus points for the winning team. For example, we won the match against Fulwood 12 games to 1. Therefore, we receive 16 points to their 1.

We hold an open night on Thursday 7pm to 9pm at Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre and new players are always welcome.

It’s £3.50 for members and £4.50 for non-members.

Julia first at Morley 10k ERNEST THORPE Julia Johnson put in an excellent performance to claim first place in the ladies over55 age category at the Morley 10k. Julia’s time for the distance was 45-12. At the Manchester Half Marathon Matthew Robinson grabbed third place in the men’s over55 category in 1-23-05. Martin Ball was fifth in the men’s over50 category in 1-21-59 and Andrew Heppenstall had a great run to finish in 1-19-39. Gareth Irvine was first over40 man at the Run for Wildlife 5k. He was also 5th overall in a time of 19-25. At the Sheffield 10k Richard Docker was on the podium with third place in the men’s over60 age category in a time of 48-49. There was more success for Penistone at the Rother Valley 10k where Johnathan Bentley was 5th overall and first in the men’s over50 age category in 3846. Junior club member Flynn Rogers took part in the Sheffield Fun Run and placed first in his age category in a time of 10-49 for the 2.5k run.

On the fells two Penistone runners competed in the Langdale Fell race up in the lake district. First back was Damian Kilpin in 2-41-50 closely followed by Phil Montgomery who finished in 2-45-53. On the Parkrun scene David Needham achieved the

Stockbridge Golfers Success Golfers from Stocksbridge Golf Club tasted success with the J H Aitchison Trophy played at Pheonix Golf Club on 2 October.

The competition is organised by the Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs and to get to the final, pairs of golfers must succeed in qualifying rounds at their own club. 25 Clubs from the area were represented at the final.

The two pairs that qualified to represent Stocksbridge were Peter Barker/ Glyn Stainforth and Jonathan Bradley/ Pete Westhead. The format for the final was a better ball Stableford and the Stocksbridge golfers managed an impressive aggregate score of 85 points. Not only did the Stocksbridge golfers win the main team trophy, Peter Barker and Glyn Stainforth also won the best individual pairs score with 44 points.

At the end of a long summer season of Medal competitions, Mick Shouler won the Medal Final at Stocksbridge Golf Club. To qualify for the final required members to have won a Saturday or Mid-Week Monthly Medal in either of the handicap divisions played through the summer. 28 Gents played in the final on 8 October and Mick, from Division 1 playing off a handicap of 10, won with a net 66, 2 shots clear of the field.

The conditions were dry, but very windy, which made Mick's score all the more impressive.

Paul Blake (8) was the Division 1 runner-up with a net 68, with John Slodyczak (11) in third place with a net 71. The leading scorer in Division 2 came from Nick Broomhead (14) with a net 68. Andrew Taylor (17) was second with a net 70 and Josh Shelley (17) was third with a net 71.

The final Mid-Week qualifier for the Medal Final was played on 6 October, with Phil Jepson (8) winning Division 1 with a net 68. Jason Kenyon (4) was second with a net 70 and Eric Wilkinson (8) third with a net 72. Division 2 was led by Eddie Smith (21) with a net 68. Brian Dobb (14) was second with a net 72 and Joe Marsh (22) third with a net 72 as well, though with a worse back 9 score.

The Ladies Section at the Club also had a final to compete in on 9 October. This time it was the Ladies Stableford Final. Liana O'Sullivan (4) was the winner with 26 points. Terri Moffett (26) and Hilja O'Sullivan (19) both scored 24 points, but Terri took second place on countback.

The Stocksbridge Bandits completed their 8th and final competition of the summer. Stuart Marsh (18) not only enjoyed

victory in the competition with 37 points, he scored a hole-in-one on the short par three 13th.

Naz Hassan (16) was second with 36 points and Nick Broomhead (14) was third with 35 points. Nick's score was the same as Wayne Hirst (25), but he had a better back 9.

The Bandits competitions are all part of a summer league table, with the players best 4 Stableford scores counting. 38 players competed in the Bandits competitions through the season and the overall winner was Brian Dobb with an aggregate score of 150 points. Stuart Marsh finished a close second with 149 points and Paul Ryan was third with 146 points.

Church arrived with tremendous away form, but they had just lost 2-5 at home to Emley.

Church returned to winning ways with a rather laboured win on the road. Goole had little of the ball and when they did, they did little in front of goal. Church on the other hand will be pleased with a 2-goal win and a clean sheet.

“It was a great reaction from Wednesday night’s defeat, travelling to Goole and getting a two-nil victory.

Our keeper Harry Ambler (pictured) made a vital oneon-one save with ten minutes remaining in the first half, he took a good clattering but it was a class save and he’s kept us in it at one-nil.

Goole’s a hard place to go to, where they are in the table’s misleading, they deserve to be a lot higher.

The biggest thing today was making sure we got three points and making sure that

there was a reaction from Wednesday night.”

Tigers trail in STEELS CRUSH GRAND FINAL SORRY OWLS “It’s not a disaster by any stretch.

“I think we’ve been dealt a rough hand in a couple of heats but it’s 12 points.

“I think it sets up the Final at Sheffield on Thursday really nicely.”

SHEFFIELD trail by 12 points at the halfway stage of the 2022 Premiership Grand Final.

The Tru Plant Tigers were beaten 51-39 by Belle Vue in the first leg at the National Speedway Stadium on Monday.

Three of the opening four races ended with a 3-3 but the hosts were able to open up a ten point lead with four advantages between Heats Five and Ten. Tobiasz Musielak and Justin Sedgmen combined for 4-2s in both Heats Six and Nine though to limit further damage.

Robert Lambert got the better of Jack Holder in a stunning Heat 11 battle before Adam Ellis picked up his first race win in a 4-2 with Sedgmen in Heat 12.

With the visitors reduced to five men with Jye Etheridge and Charles Wright crashing out, Sheffield took full advantage of having an extra rider in Heat 14 with their only 5-1 of the night.

But Lambert and Brady Kurtz pulled off maximums of their own in Heats 13 and 15 to establish that 12 point first leg advantage.

Steels manager made one change from the team from midweek, with new signing Leigh Whelan going straight in the side. Steels were still without the injured Elliot Murray (3 weeks at least), Cody Prior (6 – 8 weeks) Jordan Lemon (10 days), Ross Goodwin is hoping to be back for Lincoln United and to comply our missing players Zack Reynolds was missing due to illness, so Baker made his home debut as well. On the bench was our other recent signing Keegan Townrow.

To a man this was our best performance all season and the trick now is to keep the same standard every game.

If we can then we are going to be very hard to play against. The result was our first home win of the season and only our 2nd of the season. We move up to 15th but besides Worksop Town we have at least 2 games in hand on every team above us. A 10 day break now will hopefully see at least 2 players return from injury/illness.
