Teenager released on bail as investigation into Sheffield park stabbing continues.

A 13-year-old boy arrested yesterday (Wednesday 27 July) on suspicion of attempted murder in connection to a stabbing in a Sheffield park has been bailed with conditions and placed on curfew.

The teenager, from Sheffield, has been released on bail after South Yorkshire Police sought advice from the Crown Prosecution Service. The investigation is continuing.

The victim, a 13-year-old girl, remains in hospital in a stable condition, and is expected to be discharged today (Thursday 28 July).

Police were called at around 9pm on Tuesday (26 July) to reports a 13-year-old girl had been stabbed.

Officers attended the scene. The victim was taken to hospital via

ambulance after suffering a stab wound to her abdomen.

Police in Sheffield have issued a CCTV image of a man they would like to speak to following an alleged assault in Stocksbridge.

Detective Superintendent Nikki Leach said: “We know that this incident will have caused deep concern amongst the local community and beyond. We are satisfied that there is no wider risk to the public.

At around 1:10am on Saturday 16 July, two men were leaving a bar in Manchester Road, Stocksbridge, when it is reported that an unknown man approached and assaulted them, leaving one 26-year-old man in hospital.

“Officers remain at the scene today and can reassure the public on their safety. This was an isolated incident and we would urge people not to be concerned about a wider threat to their safety.”

The second victim received minor injuries.

Officers believe the individual pictured could hold vital information and are urging him, or anyone who recognises him, to get in touch.

“DANGEROUS” sheffield RAPIST jailed “Dangerous” rapist who sexually abused and used violence against girl is jailed A convicted rapist who sexually abused a young teenage girl before he brutally assaulted her in his home has been jailed for 13-and-a-half years.

Sheffield Crown Court heard on July 26 how Daniel Winwood, aged 31, of Truman Grove, Deepcar, Sheffield, had controlled and coerced the youngster and repeatedly had sex with her before he subjected her to a prolonged attack.

Judge David Dixon told Winwood: “You are quite clearly dangerous. First of all you have a relevant conviction. It’s clear from the pre-sentence report and psychiatric report that you are prone to using violence and sexual violence at a whim and you will do what you want to get what you want.”

Andrew Bailey, prosecuting, said Winwood, who has previous convictions for a rape, robbery, assault, possessing a knife and harassment, met the girl when she was aged 14 via Facebook when he believed she was aged 16.

Winwood was arrested on a footpath nearby and police found knives and a hammer and three cannabis plants at his home.

The defendant pleaded guilty to a raft of offences committed between 2018 and 2021 including assault occasioning actual bodily harm, controlling and coercive behaviour, producing cannabis, and four counts of sexual activity with a child.

Mr Bailey added Winwood was controlling and abusive and he stopped the girl from seeing friends and there was violence including punching her and squeezing her face.

The complainant, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, stated Winwood made her have sex two or three times a week and made her perform oral sex.

Winwood had been given a Child Abduction Warning Notice to prevent him having further contact with the complainant, according to Mr Bailey, and despite learning her true age he

messaged her and threatened her family.

Mr Bailey said Winwood subsequently grabbed the girl from the Fox Valley Shopping Park, at Stocksbridge, and took her to his flat where he hit her, took her phone, picked up a bottle and hit her over the head.

Winwood kept punching and kicking the youngster and pulled her hair and struck her head against a bath, according to Mr Bailey.

The complainant stated Winwood had threatened her with knives and a hammer during the incident.

His victim stated she is no longer an outgoing girl and she struggles to sleep and has been left with nightmares.

Her mother added Winwood has ruined her daughter’s life and she fears he will carry out his threats.

Vanessa Saxton, defending, said Winwood who has poor mental health and has suffered with

substance abuse does recognise he needs help.

Ms Saxton added: “There is hope for this gentleman and whilst he recognises and accepts he will be subject to a lengthy sentence one hopes that sentence does not trample over that hope.”

Judge Dixon sentenced Winwood to an extended custodial sentence of 13 years and six months after he deemed the defendant to be dangerous.

He told Winwood he would have to serve at least six years and two months before he could be considered for release and if it is decided he is not fit for release he will remain in custody for 13-and-a-half years.

Winwood was made subject indefinitely to the Sex Offenders Register, a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a Restraining Order.

Council to trial food waste recycling collections

At the end of August, Sheffield City Council and Veolia will begin the city’s first ever food waste recycling trial, with 8,200 households in Sheffield being urged to recycle food waste separately from the rest of their rubbish.

Councillor Joe Otten, Chair of the Waste & Street Scene Policy Committee at Sheffield City Council said: “Food waste recycling is something I have been calling for for many years, with its potential to make a big difference to our

greenhouse gas emissions and reduce our black bin waste.

“The trial will help us understand more about food waste collections locally and realise the scale of the benefits, both economically and environmentally.”

The food waste collected will be taken to anaerobic digestion facilities in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire where it will be recycled into bio-fuel and a nutrient-rich fertiliser and soil improver for use in farming.

Estimates suggest that UK households waste around 6.5 million tonnes of food each year.

A monthly Food and Craft market returns to Sheffield’s Fox Valley Shopping Centre this weekend showcasing a range of local, independent producers and makers.

Spanning both the Saturday and Sunday, up to 20 stalls will be on offer for Fox Valley shoppers to enjoy including popular favourites such as Brownie Queen, Sheffield Dry Gin and Horseshoe Crafts.

Lord Mayor welcomes law firm’s support for city’s premier arts event

Sheffield’s celebrated Art In The Gardens returns to the city’s Botanical Gardens in September with the backing of Graysons Solicitors.

The city-based law firm return as the premier sponsors of the event for the fourth year in a row.

Sheffield Lord Mayor Councillor, Sioned-Mair Richards, met Peter Clark, managing partner at Graysons, at the Botanical Gardens to celebrate the final countdown to the event.

Graysons are also the sponsors of Sheffield Young Artists and regularly work with local artist Alan

Pennington. He was also in attendance at the event.

Peter Clark, managing partner at Graysons, said: “We’ve had the privilege of being involved in Art In The Gardens since 2019 and we’re looking forward to being present once again in September.

It’s a wonderful celebration of the artistic and creative talent in the region.”

Art In The Gardens takes place on Saturday and Sunday, September 3rd and 4th, with a preview evening on Friday, September 2nd.

Yard sale community event A yard sale has been organised for this Sunday.

This Sunday will see people run Yard Sales at their own homes (in their gardens or driveways) to sell their unwanted items.

This event is for Stocksbridge, Deepcar and Bolsterstone.

There is a Google Map of the sellers' locations available on the Yard Sale Sunday Facebook site, and advertised on local Facebook forums.

Organiser Sharon Booth told Look Local, "A coordinated Yard Sale event will allow buy-

ers to travel to different yard sales in the local area all on the same day. Sellers and buyers can meet their neighbours, buyers can find bargains, sellers can make more space and maybe make a little bit of money out of their unwanted items, as well as contributing to a 'reuse, recycle' approach.

The whole event is meant to be a fun way that hopefully also helps us avoid some landfill."

Some sellers (Greave House Farm, for example) are using their yard sale to raising money for charity.

I am sharing volunteering with you Dear Look Local We read with interest your recent article regarding the increase in young people applying to be part of their local Scout group sections post Covid.

We are delighted that, at High Green Scout Group, our leaders worked tirelessly to deliver the group Our first pop-up surgery is on Saturday 6 August sessions online throughout lockdown adapting when we’ll be in the Millennium Gardens, their sessions to meet the demands of working on Oughtibridge to chat to local residents and help line. with any concerns or issues they may have.

In the main our young people stuck with it and we Kind regards, have come out the other side as a strong group and Janet subsequently we have waiting lists of young people Cllr Janet Ridler wanting to join all sections.

Deepcar & Stannington NPT Throughout the week we have set up several random Speed Check sites around our area spending roughly an hour at each location. (Usually by this time we get tagged at the location on the Waze Sat Nav App and people get used to us being there). We have checked over 130 vehicles and issued 13 warning letters to drivers who were just over the speed limit. Thankfully no one was way over the limit. We have been at Station Lane in Oughtibridge, Coal Pit Lane in Stocksbridge and Stannington Road in Stannington.

During the week we also stopped the driver of an Audi.

He tried to confuse officers and throw then off by using false details; however, he was unsuccessful and was found to not have a driving licence or insurance to drive the vehicle. He is now facing a minimum of 3 points on his non-existent licence (which makes it harder for him to obtain a licence in the future) and a minimum fine of £300 as well as having to pay to get his vehicle back after it was recovered by us.

We have also been out patrolling our rural hot spots and dealing with any vehicles we have found parking dangerously. The driver of a White Leon obviously does not know their Highway Code or know that you cannot park on any section of road where there is a double white line system in place, even if the double white line is broken on one side. They will now be facing a fine which will be dropping on their door mat soon.

Digital students celebrate T Level milestone worked hard over the past two years to develop their technical knowledge and practical skills.

The T Level programme has also seen the students gain hands-on industry experience from a work placement of at least 45 days, improving their general employability skills, and gain English and Maths skills where required.

Neil Johnson, Assistant Principal for Young People at Barnsley College, said: “We are incredibly proud of these pioneering students who are part of the first cohort nationally to achieve a T Level.

“The T Level has been designed to enable students to acquire the knowledge and skills to progress to higher skills employment. The industry placement has allowed them to develop the skills and gain vital experience in roles aligned to their career aspirations. These students now progress with the full package of knowledge, skills Barnsley College T Levels students with Neil Johnson, Assistant Principal for Young People and industry experience on to their next (left); Leanne Brunt, Head of Digital Industries (centre front); and Sam Buttling, Digital Course steps. A group of Digital students are celebrating being the first-ever cohort to complete a Digital T Level programme at Barnsley College.

The students marked their achievements at a celebration event at the College’s SciTech Digital Innovation Hub, alongside employers from the sector who have

provided industry placements and College staff.

The group began their course in September 2020 in challenging circumstances, given that they were starting a technical course with a practical focus while studying remotely due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite that, the students have

Next week I’m even going to the House of Lords to talk about T Levels.”

Barnsley College was the first College in South Yorkshire to offer T Levels, which are designed for 16 to 18-year-olds and studied at the same level as A Levels.

T Levels are for those who prefer a more technical education, rather than following a purely academic pathway, or a workbased apprenticeship. The programmes offer students a mixture of classroom or workshop-based learning and ‘on-the-job’ experience.

Rail journey to Lincoln helps to improve wellbeing In the Stocksbridge Valley Museum you can see a fine array of glass bottles of all shapes and sizes, some even still with their contents! They quite often turn up in rubbish tips with Victorian or Edwardian layers; tips associated with the reservoirbuilders’ ‘tin towns’ have been fruitful.

One of the bottling companies was Ernest Schofields based on Victoria Street and here you can see one their adverts, and a stoneware jar and a bottle bearing their name. The bottle is a style known as a Codd bottle, invented by Hiram Codd of Camberwell in London and patented in 1872. Previously makers used a wooden stopper wired onto a string rim (which is a rib of glass applied to the neck) but this was unable to retain the pressure of aerated water, so the Codd bottle was an early way to keep the fizz in the bottle before screw tops or crown caps were invented. The neck is pinched in and a marble inserted; the marble had a higher melting point than bottle glass to stop it sticking during manufacture. The bottles would be filled

upside down, and pressure of the gas in the bottle forced the marble against the washer, sealing in the carbonation. These glass marbles are quite often found in gardens and tips and can be confused with pottery balls used for the game of knurr and spell.

We have examples of the Codd bottles and marbles on display in the Valley Museum - to find out more, come and visit. It’s on the ground floor of Stocksbridge Town Hall on Manchester Road – open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 12 noon and 1.30 to 3.30pm every week, and is run by volunteers. There is lots to see, from the famous Bolsterstone glass and Midhope pottery to memorabilia of royal events, from church records to steelmaking history. There are also resources you can use for family history research and a huge collection of old photos. You can also find a lot of resources on our website at Society | Stocksbridge & District History Society (stocksbridgehs.co.uk). We are planning a display of local bottles in the local history cases in Stocksbridge Library.

A SHEFFIELD group has been given a confidence boost to get out and about independently on the region’s trains.

Eight people local to Darnall and living with disability, anxiety or feelings of loneliness were invited on a free day out by train to explore the beautiful city of Lincoln, by South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) Community Rail in partnership with Better Journeys by Rail.

“We’re coming out of a pandemic that kept us inside for far too long and we’d like to help people to overcome any barriers they might have to travel by train, so they can travel independently and connect with other local people”, said Lizzie Davies, from Better Journeys by Rail.

“This time we went to the fantastic medieval city of Lincoln, where we explored the Cathedral and the Castle grounds. It’s just over an hour away by train from Darnall and one of the many fantastic destinations that can be easily reached on our local network. It would be a shame if people missed out on exploring new places because they don’t feel confident enough to travel by rail.”

Once in Lincoln, the participants enjoyed a gentle stroll while relaxing and admiring their surroundings.

“Community Rail is about supporting social inclusion and helping local people to better connect with their stations and enjoy the rail network that serves them, whilst helping us understand any barriers to travel and what the rail industry can do to address these. It’s also about promoting this accessible and sustainable mode of transport”, said Cathrine Ashworth, from SYMCA Community Rail.

“Guided trips like this are a great opportunity to experience a rail journey in a safe and supported environment.

We offer advice on navigating the station, planning journeys, buying tickets, passes, boarding the train and accessibility, among other things, to help improve their confidence.”

The participants had such a positive experience that they’re already planning their next adventure.

“I really enjoyed the train trip as I’ve learnt so many things; it was really informative. I’ve never been on a train in Sheffield before and it was a really good experience, so it won’t be my last! We are planning on visiting Lincoln again to picnic on the Castle grounds. Cathrine and Lizzie were really friendly and supportive”, said Saada Sharif, who lives in Darnall and was among the participants.

The group travelled to Lincoln on Thursday 30 June, where they also visited some local shops and a tearoom. The trip was supported by Northern Rail, which is a partner of Better Journeys by Rail.

Penistone Church began their NCEL Premier campaign with a disappointing home defeat to local rivals Handsworth.

Handsworth opened up with a spell of crisp, simple passing football and had several half chances, but Church snuffed out these early openings.

Stocksbridge Golf Club celebrated its annual Charity golf day on 30 July. A large field of 100 plus golfers took part on the day and enjoyed good weather and a course in top condition, thanks to the hard work of the Club's Greenkeepers. The day was open to Ladies, Gents and Juniors.

The day's primary aim is to raise money for the Captain and Lady Captain's chosen charity, with the focus this year on Prostate cancer. It was fitting that the Gents John Marren Trophy was won by the Club Captain, John Moss. John (23) won the Stableford format with a fantastic score of 44 points. Receiving his trophy from Club President John Yeates and Club Professional, Roger Broad, John said: "It's great to have won the golf today, but that is second to the fantastic fund-raising effort of all the members of the Club."
