‘I may be gone a while’

jim ‘turns for home’ in charity walk Jim ‘I may be gone a while’ Morton is on an epic adventure of visiting every lighthouse on mainland coastline Britain, has reached another milestone.

The 62 year-old began an adventure of a lifetime in his quest to visit every lighthouse on mainland Great Britain, by foot. A dream he has held ever since his father back in 1967 bought a young ‘Jim’ a Road Map of Great Britain.

His journey began in April 2021, and after 450 days he has turned the corner at Lands End and is heading home-wards.

After 7215 miles walked, Jim ‘only’ has the north coast of Cornwall and Devon to walk before he embarks on the coast of Wales and then inland towards ‘home’ in Penistone.

He has had an eventful time on the road, including being airlifted to hospital in Scotland after a cliff fall, washed out to sea twice, almost being swept away in flood water and rescuing trapped sheep, to give examples of his journey to date.

Although his journey has been eventful to say the least, Jim is enjoying the scenery he has experienced on his walk, although he has managed to go through five pairs of walking shoes and boots.

Jim has ably been supported by his wife Sue and their two Westie dogs.

Children thrive in the stimulating home from home nursery A pre-school nursery in Stocksbridge where ‘children thrive’ and ‘enjoy every moment of their time’ has achieved an OUTSTANDING rating from Ofsted for the third consecutive time.

Happy Hands Preschool & Childcare in Stocksbridge received the outstanding rating. Manager Angela Moffatt told Look local “This is a significant accomplishment and all the team are very proud.”

This is acknowledged in the report; the team ‘consistently deepens and develops their understanding of how children learn’.

Happy Hands is a voluntary committee run charitable organisation and since it began 23 years ago, has continued its mission to help children into St. Ann’s Catholic Primary school alongside other local schools.

Throughout the day the inspector was impressed that ‘opportunities are skillfully planned to inspire children’s imagination and curiosity and build on their interests and experiences’.

Recognition was given to how staff ‘nurture children’s communica-

tion skills extremely well and how the children love the many songs, stories and rhymes that staff share, contributing to the rich vocabulary they acquire’.

He also felt that children, including those with ‘special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) learn to explore the world around them and think and act together’.

Happy Hands stayed open throughout the COVID pandemic, continuing to support families of key workers not only during the term time but also through the holidays.

Parents highly recommend Happy Hands and feel it is at the heart of the local community.

Charity cycle team want your nominations for their support

Charity cyclists from Stocksbridge based Dransfield Properties Ltd are asking local residents to nominate the good causes which should benefit from their amazing fundraising efforts later in the year.

Nineteen riders will take on the final Leg of the Dransfield Tour of Europe ride in September – it’s the last time that the team will ride together after their epic journey has taken them across Europe, picking up a leg of their journey every year since June 2007.

The 14th and final leg of the charity event will see the riders cover 335 miles cycling from Newcastle to London – where the marathon fundraising effort started. More than £546,000 has been raised for charity since that first ride from London to Paris and 5,000 miles covered.

To mark the final leg of the tour Managing Director and ride founder Mark Dransfield wants to hear from the local community about the good causes which could benefit from the 2022 fundraising push.

As well as raising funds for St Luke’s Hospice in Sheffield the ride will also raise money for The Dransfield Foundation – and it’s through this fund the riders are hoping to hear from local people to make suggestions about how the money should be spent.

The Dransfield Foundation is aimed at assisting children and young people and the cycle team would like to receive nominations for assistance

– it could be to help a particular group doing good work in the community or assisting a local family with a child who may have a life limiting illness.

Mark Dransfield said: “We have helped dozens of charities, large and small over the last 14 years through the bike ride. This is our last ride and we really want to hear from our own community here in Stocksbridge about where people think our fundraising could make a real difference.

Over the years the ride has taken the cyclists on tough rides through 15 countries from London, Paris, Lyon, Marseilles, Portofino, Rome, Dubrovnik, Trieste, Munich, Berlin, Copenhagen, Oslo, Stavanger and Aberdeen.

Mark added: “This will be our final ride and there are quite a few of us who were there on the first ride so it is going to feel like quite an emotional milestone when we arrive back in London.

Petition launched for safe crossing

A resident has launched a petition urging Sheffield Council to put safety measures in place on an “extremely” busy road near school, writes By Molly Williams for the Sheffield Star.

Lily Grayson started the petition for a pedestrian crossing on Cross Hill Road, Ecclesfield, which will run on the council’s website until August 4.

She suggested a puffin, toucan or zebra crossing on the road which is a short walk from Ecclesfield Primary School, Beck Primary School and others.

In her petition statement she said: “This is an extremely busy road with many dangerous junctions and left and right turns, there is no safe place to cross this road.

“Cross Hill has many family residents and there are many schools nearby the area with children walking home from school. And therefore for the safety of myself, my family and people in the community [we want this crossing].”

‘GRADUATION’

EARLY MORNING INDUSTRIAL EXPLOSION A loud bang could be heard across the Hillsborough area of Sheffield on Sunday morning.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said five engines had been tackling the fire in Clay Wheels Lane, near Middlewood Park, for several hours.

It said no-one was "seriously injured in the explosion" but a large cordon was placed around the building.

On Saturday, children celebrated ‘Graduating’ from a Nursery Pre School in Chapeltown, ready for school in September.

“We are so proud of the achievements of the children through some difficult times staying open all through the pandemic, and how they always made us smile. The 4 Graduation ceremonies were attended by over 180 parents and family and friends to cheer their children on, we will miss all of them but sure they will be fantastic in their new schools.”

Local News Car ‘deliberately’ used to cause harm after crowd injured

Emergency services were called to Shoreham Street in Sheffield city centre at about 03:30 BST. South Yorkshire Police now believe the vehicle was used "deliberately to cause harm and damage" before driving off.

Police said no one suffered lifethreatening injuries but there may be more people who were hurt and have not sought medical help.

Det Insp Andy Knowles said: "At this stage of the investigation, we believe that this was a targeted incident and that the vehicle was used deliberately to cause harm and damage.

"This is clearly an incredibly serious and dangerous offence, and we have a team of officers from all across the force working to progress enquiries and identify those involved as swiftly as possible."

On Sunday police said they were treating the incident as a "series of assaults", which were not thought to be linked to terrorism.

Investigators have called for witnesses and anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage to contact police.

The vehicle believed to have been involved has since been located and recovered.

Wednesday 20 The final Bolsterstone Archaeology and Heritage Group’s talk in the 2021-22 programme is at 7.30pm when Ken Dash is going to tell us more about Meersbrook Hall. This Grade II listed building on the edge of Meersbrook Park was home to the Ruskin Museum for over 60 years, and more recently used as council offices. It is now managed by Heeley Trust. Ken has carried out an extensive survey of the Hall to try and establish how it was built, so there are now accurate scale drawings of

• Links between abuse towards pets and domestic abuse have been recognised in Statutory Guidance* released alongside the Domestic Abuse Act • Dogs Trust has long been calling for this move, as the charity’s Freedom Project approaches its eighteenth year • Almost nine in 10** professionals working in the domestic abuse sector say they are aware of cases where pets have also been abused • In addition to the physical abuse, 97% of professionals said that pets are also often used as a means of controlling someone experiencing domestic abuse.

The UK’s largest dog welfare charity, Dogs Trust, has welcomed guidance produced alongside the Domestic Abuse Act formally recognising certain types of behaviour towards pets as an example of domestic abuse, highlighting ways in which pets can be used as a tool by perpetrators. The landmark Domestic Abuse Act received Royal Assent in 2021, providing much needed protection for survivors and their children.

Through its Freedom Project – a specialist pet fostering service for survivors of domestic abuse – Dogs Trust sees first-hand how dogs can be used as tools within domestic abuse, both as a means for perpetrators to coerce and control their partners, as well as through other means, such as restricting finances for essential veterinary care and food.

Rat infestation Dear Editor I’m sending this email to let residents know in Deepcar on st Margaret’s and nearby areas Carr Close etc the growing concern of the Rat infestation we are getting at the moment, they are as bold and brave as anything they don’t just come out in the evening the like to scurry through the gardens in he day time and don’t mind passing you by whilst you might be hanging out your washing or doing a bit of gardening they just stop have a good look at you then scurry off as if they own your back garden.

I know most people like to feed the birds but this is one of the worst things we can do if we want to get rid of any unwelcome pest, you may think that if you hang your bird feeders up high it won’t attract rats or pest but birds don’t have any table manners and peck the seeds etc all over the ground so this invites the uninvited pest, in the past 2 weeks I have seen them 5/6 times so they are on the increase so it might be a good time to stop feeding the birds foe a while especially when they have plenty of food around at the moment, or they other solutions is poisoning them and I know many of you have cats in this area and I wouldn’t like them to eat it .. but if that’s the only solution I will be using it Stressed out resident

Car parking in Stocksbridge How nice to read last week that parking in Stocksbridge is under review. I have two suggestions that could make big improvements.

The Council and Lidl should come to an agreement to swap ownership of the parking spaces. The east end should be for Lidl customers as this is nearest their door. The west end is closer for those visiting the town centre shops. So few these remain that vehicles would not need to stay very long anyway!

By agreement the number of spaces allocated to each purpose could remain as it is now, and there is ample room for a double row in the main area, as it used to be if I recall correctly. The situation could be improved at the cost of a can of white paint.

The Car park at Co-Op is a different matter and must have been designed by someone who has never been in a car. Manoeuvring into the public parking area is unnecessarily difficult and there is a hatched area taking up valuable space for no reason. This park is usually full whereas the large Co-Op section never is, so some kind of negotiation is called for.

The main drive into the car park is an unnecessary sweeping curve. The exit onto this from the south end of the car park meets this drive at a sharp angle such that one cannot exit left in one single manoeuvre and even then, incoming vehicles have to give way.

I wonder why both of the above observations were not part of the original plan.

Self-employed people and businesses in financial distress, and with outstanding tax liabilities, may be eligible to receive support with their tax affairs by applying to HMRC’s Time To Pay service.

Kevin Radford, Director at Sheffield based C21 Chartered Accountants comments: “These arrangements are agreed on a caseby-case basis, but they are tailored to individual circumstances and liabilities.

“If an agreement is reached with HMRC, it allows individuals and business to pay off their debt by instalments over a period of time.

“HMRC will usually offer taxpayers the option of extra time to pay if they think they genuinely cannot pay in full, but if HMRC do not think that more time will help, then they can require immediate payment and start enforcement action if payment is not forthcoming.”

HMRC guidance online states that Taxpayers who want to use the online option must also have filed their latest tax return, be within 60 days of the payment deadline, and intend to pay their debt off within the next 12 months or less.

Kevin adds: “An online payment plan for Self-Assessment tax bills can be used to set up instalment arrangements for paying tax liabilities up to £30,000. Taxpayers that do qualify for a Time To Pay arrangement using the self-serve Time To Pay facility online, can do so without speaking to an HMRC advisor.”

Blood cancer charity urges people to save lives • DKMS is urging more people from Sheffield to join the blood stem cell register • Last year, lifesaving registrations in Sheffield fell by 48% compared to 2020 • This follows a shocking national trend, with just over a third (37%) of people registering in the first 3 months of this year compared to last Spring • DKMS is urging people to register now, to give someone a second chance at life at dkms.org.uk DKMS is urging people in Sheffield to register as blood stem cell donors to help give a second chance at life for someone with blood cancer. The charity continues to feel the aftershocks of the pandemic which devastatingly impacted the number of people signing-up.

Lifesaving registrations in Sheffield have fallen by 48% compared to 2020.

There is an urgent need for people to help meet the demand for donations and reverse the decline in registrations. Sadly, Sheffield follows a national trend, with just over a third (37%) of the number of people in the UK reg-

istering in the first 3 months of this year compared to last Spring.

A stem cell transplant can be the last hope of survival for patients and despite the hope of a return to normalcy, a big push is needed in 2022 to help give those with blood cancer the best chance. A blood stem cell donation from a genetically similar person can offer a second chance at life for those in need.

Only 1 in 4 people with blood cancer (and in need of a transplant) will find a matching blood stem cell donor within their own family, which means that those in need of a blood stem cell transplant on the kindness of a stranger. The family of Myla Mae Hatcher (8), from Sheffield know only too well how powerless this news makes you feel.

Myla was diagnosed at just 4 years old with severe aplastic anaemia, a deficiency of all three blood cell types – white, red and platelets. The life threatening condition drained her of energy and made it difficult for her to enjoy her loves in life: swimming, gymnastics and ballet. Her best option was to find a blood stem cell match and luckily her match

was found just before Christmas 2018 - she is now recovering at home. Danielle says:

“My daughter, Myla’s, blood cancer diagnosis was a huge blow, but being told that her best shot at a normal life was a stem cell transplant yet no one in our family was a match was even more heart-breaking. I never thought something like this would happen to us. No one in our family has had blood cancer. I was so scared when I realised we were reliant on a kind stranger somewhere in the world to save her life. It’s impossible to comprehend how important such a small action as swabbing your cheeks and joining the register is until it's you, your spouse, your child, or your friends fighting for their lives. If you are eligible to sign up, please do so and give other people the second chance at life that I have been given.”

His time of 26m 28s placed him 23rd and 5th in the 60-69 year old category and took 15 seconds off his own club age record at 68 years old.

In glorious sunshine and with the course in excellent playing condition, Peter Elliott won the Captain's Day Trophy at Stocksbridge Golf Club. There was a large field and, has become a welcome tradition, the day was open to Gents and Ladies. With a large field of over 120 competitors, the early starters were out at 7am and the last tee off times were not until mid-afternoon.

The weather certainly helped make it a fantastic day for the Club Captain John Moss, who was there long before the first players went out and was still there well after the presentations in the evening.

Peter Elliott's (13) winning Stableford score was 43 points. In Division 1, Harrison McHale finished second with the same score as Peter, but lost out on countback. Lee Hydes (10) was third with 40 points, which Ian Sedgwick (13) matched, but also lost out on countback.

Division 2 leader was Matt Luttrell (27) with an excellent 40 points. Nick Wood (15) was close behind with 39 points.

Mick Meegan (24) also scored 39 points, but lost out to Nick on countback.

Margaret Pearson (29) was the leading Lady with 39 points.

Hilja O'Sullivan (23) was second with 36 points. Helen Moffett (26) was third with 33 points.

During the presentation ceremony John Moss praised the "strong support" he had received from members and "was pleased that the weather had made it such a special day for all." John is pictured with the winner Peter Elliott, Club Professional Roger Broad and Club President John Yeates.

The last week has seen a lot of golfing competition at the Golf Club. The League Team celebrated a great win in their top of the table clash with Roundwood at home. The score line was a convincing 6-2 win, but the matches were much closer than the score suggests. The points were won by Danny Costello, Liam O'Sullivan and Ben Stringer. With two matches to go Stocksbridge are now two points behind Roundwood and have a crucial match at home to Bondhi next week.

The Dragons section competed for the Barry Hough Trophy in a Texas Scramble format. Noel Weaver, Mick Bellamy and Pete Mannion, with a combined

handicap of 10 shots, won with a net 54. There were three trios who were one shot back from the winning score, but on countback Peter Dickinson, Mick Mosforth and Dave Jones (12) finished second. Alf Pearson, Bill Boucher and John Sawdon (14) finished third.

The Gents July Mid-Week Medal was won by Ben Stringer (3) from Division 1 with a net 63. Second and third from Division 1 went to Mick Hulbert (10) and Harrison McHale (7) with a net 65 and 66 respectively.

Leading scorer in Division 2 was Lewis Perry (22) with a net 65.

Josh Shelley (18) and Les Wright (13) were second and third both with net 68s, Josh taking second place on countback.

Finally, on 10 July the Gents Section competed for the Gents Sunday Cup. Ash Howe (3), won with a Stableford score of 37 points.

Nick Wood (14) was second with 36 points. Dennis Haley (16) was third with 35 points, the same score as Andrew Taylor (18), but a better back 9.

Stocksbridge 1st XI travelled to third place Cawthorne, looking to keep their form in the league going. The weather was perfect for a 2nd v 3rd clash, with the 1st XI winning the toss and electing bowl. The 1st XI fought well to dismiss Cawthorne for 224 in favourable batting conditions.

However, it was a disappointing day in the field, with the 1st dropping 8 catches which could have made things very different for the batting side. Jake Vickers claimed a 5 wicket haul with 5-61 from 13 overs and bowled a superb opening spell, the figures don’t justify how well Vickers bowler.

Joe Hibbert came on took the final 4 wickets to end with figures of 4-28. All in all a great comeback with plenty to play for in the second innings.

The 1st took to the crease needing a positive start. However a questionable run out decision from the umpire put Matt Price back in the shed. Andy Hirst looked to play his shots, but was given out LBW after an inside edge and he was unlucky to be back in the shed. The 1st XI lost wickets at vital times. Jack Newton (44) and Jack Murfin (42) top scored and we’re beginning to take the game to Cawthorne and put pressure back on the bowling side. Both were hitting it clean and sending the ball over the rope, giving plenty of entertainment to the crowd. However, wickets fell at important stages of the game.

The 1st XI fell short as they are dismissed for 171 to end their 7 match league winning streak.

This week they entertain Sheffield Collegiate at Lucas Wheels Bracken Moor looking to get back to winning ways.

Steels sign 17 goal striker and new shirt sponsor The striker has been one of Sherwood’s top scorers over the last few years. While he had a brief spell away from the club when he joined Eastwood for two months, he has spent most of his time in football by regularly scoring for Sherwood.
