Empty shop used to grow cannabis – ‘busted’ by police Last week, saw Police ‘chainsaw’ their way into an unoccupied shop on the shopping precinct, Stocksbridge.

The premises, previously a frozen foods shop on Manchester Road was found to be a largescale Cannabis Factory in a unit on the top floor of the premises.

School pupils invite elderly to Queen's Platinum Party A special Queen's Platinum Party Friendship Lunch was organised where the elderly and pupils from a local school enjoyed lunch together to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee.

The lunch organised by Health & Social Care students from Ecclesfield School, was kindly sponsored

by SOAR and Sheffield City Council Local Area Committees.

The sponsorship enabled the students to invite 50 elderly guests free of charge for a delicious Afternoon Tea and entertainment by the fantastic Oliver Harris at the Red Lion in Grenoside.

Kathy Markwick, Freelance Community Consultant, who launched Friendship Lunches in South Yorkshire 6 years ago said the inter-generational event was a huge success and it was a joy to see the students chatting and socialising with guests.

They were all extremely enthusiastic about the special event and are undoubtedly a credit to their teachers and the school.

Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir’s golf day at Stocksbridge Golf Club on Friday raised £2,500 for the Children’s Hospital in Sheffield.

The event was organised by choir top tenor Brian Pigott who started the fund-raiser 27 years ago and has been the driving force behind the event ever since. Dransfield Properties made a donation for the prizes and local businesses gave support including the choir’s main sponsor, Bradfield Brewery, Sheffield Mutual, GenFab and Stocksbridge Co-op.

The choir, conducted by Daniel Timmins and accompanied by Kim Kaye, gave a concert in the evening to say thank you to the club for its long-standing support. Golf club official and former choir chairman Frank Milnes conducted an auction.

Cuts to public transport –politician’s response Following the news that South Yorkshire will see its bus services reduced by a third, leading politicians have spoken out.

Council decide to keep Town centre CEO after COVID parties investigation concludes survey on car parking The chief executive officer of Sheffield City Council who apologised for having her Whitehall leaving do while coronavirus restrictions were in place, has returned to work.

A cross-party committee set up to look at Ms Josephs' actions said it had found she felt "genuine remorse" about taking part in the event.

The committee added that it had considered its decision over her return to work "very carefully".

Terry Fox, leader of Sheffield City Council, said he had been "deeply disappointed" by Ms Josephs' participation in the event.

In a statement, Kate Josephs, who was director general of the Cabinet Office’s COVID taskforce from July 2020 to December 2020, admitted gathering with colleagues for office drinks on the evening of December 17 to mark her departure from the civil service.

Ms Josephs said: ‘I am truly sorry that I did this and for the anger that people will feel as a result.

'Sheffield has suffered greatly during this pandemic and I apologise unreservedly.’

The admission came after revelations about a series of parties and gatherings held in Downing Street and Whitehall in 2020 while coronavirus restrictions were in force.

Ms Josephs, who had denied attending any ‘events’ at 10 Downing Street, said she had been ‘cooperating fully’ with the inquiry by Whitehall senior official Sue Gray into alleged lockdown-busting and declined to comment further until the investigation had been completed.

Ms Josephs took up her £201,000-a-year job in Sheffield in January 2021.

A wholescale review of parking in Stocksbridge has been commissioned to look at how shoppers and visitors are currently using the town centre area.

The Stocksbridge Town’s Fund Board has commissioned the work which will assess the impact of parking throughout the week as well as at weekends.

The regeneration of the Manchester Road area in the town is a key part of the £24.1 million Stocksbridge Towns Fund plans.

A new Library and Community Hub building is being developed on the current library site which will also house managed workspace as well as classroom space to deliver adult education courses.

There are also plans for new paving and landscaping along Manchester Road, as well as a grant scheme designed to deliver improvements to the shop fronts in the area.

A spokeswoman for the Towns Fund team said: “From the outset our consultation has outlined the desire for the community to see improvements to the Manchester Road area, and our plans are going to completely transform this part of the town.

“The car park survey is part of the work being undertaken to help us understand how the town is used and where people are parking when they access the current town centre facilities. So if you have seen our cameras out and about that’s what we are doing.

“The information will help to shape our thought process as we enter the next phase of the development plans.”

The business cases for the ten Stocksbridge Towns Fund projects are due to be submitted in August. If the funding is approved work could start in Spring 2023 on the first projects.

International success for Sheffield trampolinist

GOLD FOR BRYONY Current world and European trampoline champion, Bryony Page, has won gold at the FIG World Cup in Arosa, Switzerland.

Bryony, from Sheffield, who last month became European champion for the first time, was in inspired form, scoring a personal best 57.095 in the final to come out on top.

She competed the highest difficulty routine of the weekend and executed

brilliantly to make sure of gold.

Speaking afterwards, Bryony said: "It feels great to have had such a successful competition after a really big block of training in the first half of the year, and rounding off the last 12 months of competition with a World Cup gold medal. My support team and I have worked really hard so I feel proud to have achieved a PB, hitting that 57 benchmark score which we have been aiming for. It was a strong

ladies final and I’m really happy to have hit my best routine there and come back home with the gold medal.

"I really enjoyed the whole experience, especially joining the team of GB juniors and watching their successful competition too. I'm looking forward to another big training block and the next few competitions later this year, starting with the British Championships in September."

MP wants sex education changed

By ELEANOR HARDING and JULIE HENRY FOR THE DAILY MAIL Sex education is fuelling the huge rise in the number of children who think they are transgender, an MP has claimed.

In a Westminster Hall debate last week, fears were raised that material pushing 'extreme gender ideology' is indoctrinating children.

MPs heard how some parents said their child showed no sign of questioning their gender until they attended relationships and sex education (RSE) classes or school assemblies about gender identity.

The debate was secured by Miriam Cates, Tory MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge and a former biology teacher.

She claimed the rise in the number of children wanting to transition was a 'social contagion, driven by the internet and reinforced in schools'.

A recent YouGov poll found 79 per cent of secondary school teachers had pupils who were trans or non-binary.

RSE lessons have been compulsory in English secondary schools since 2020. Department for Education guidance states that children should not be taught they are in the wrong body if they do not conform to gender stereotypes. But Mrs Cates said children are being exposed to 'a plethora of deeply inappropriate, wildly inaccurate, sexually explicit and damaging materials in the name of sex education'.

The MP cited materials from the Sex Education Forum that divided children into 'menstruators and non-menstruators' and said this would lead to confusion for a teenage girl whose periods did not start. Mrs Cates also quoted sex education provider Bish, which states that 'many people' are in the middle of the spectrum in terms of their genitals.

RSE is often contracted out to unregulated organisations with their own political agendas, creating a 'Wild West' scenario, she added.

Mrs Cates claimed that in some cases teachers have been treating pupils as the opposite sex without telling parents, who are effectively 'cut out'.

MPs heard one primary school teacher left her job after staff were asked to be 'complicit' in the 'social transitioning' of a seven-yearold boy. The incident followed a visit to the school by Gendered Intelligence, which runs workshops that aim to 'increase understandings of gender diversity'.

Mrs Cates, who sits on the Commons education committee, told the debate gender ideology 'has no basis in science'.

She added: 'And yet it is being pushed on children in some schools under the guise of RSE with what can only be described as a religious fervour.'

In response, schools minister Robin Walker said RSE guidance would be reviewed regularly but schools should be 'trusted' to design their own curriculum on the subject.

LGBTQ+ café set to launch in the city thanks to vital funding from NHS Sheffield Thanks to funding from NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), Sheffield Mind are set to launch a wellbeing café specifically for LGBTQ+ called Kaleidoscope for Sheffielders who may need additional support – coinciding with Pride Month.

The café will support those who are lonely, just need a friendly face to talk to, or need a bit more support with their mental health. It’s part of offer to LGBTQ+ support around mental health needs as part of the wider community mental health transformation work in the city.

Margaret Lewis, the Chief Executive Officer at Sheffield Mind, said: “Sheffield Mind is absolutely thrilled to be launching our Kaleidoscope LGBTQ+ café, funded by the CCG. “During lockdown, we got phone calls from members

of the community who were feeling isolated, lonely or were struggling with mental health issues. This café is in response to that need, a safe space where people aged 18+ from the LGBTQ+ community can come together and socialise, with support.

“We hope to launch in the next few weeks, but we’re still looking for volunteers who can commit three hours a fortnight, so if you’re interested, email job@sheffieldmind.co.uk.”

This news coincides with Pride Month, which takes place annually every June to stand with LGBTQ+ staff and people.

Striding out into the Peak District countryside The benefits of the outdoors for health and wellbeing are now widely-known and, for 30 years, the Peak District National Park has been leading the way with ranger-led health walks.

Free monthly walks are supported by the Peak District Foundation and public health locality funding. They are delivered by our rangers throughout the National Park on easy paths with no stiles. Community transport to and from each walk is available to eligible walkers at no cost.

The 30th anniversary of our health walks was celebrated with a guided walk at Macclesfield Forest.

Learning and Discovery ranger Jo Hanney said: “It’s great to see people enjoying fresh air, nature, exercise and good company in our amazing landscapes.

“Over the last 30 years, health walks have created some very happy memories – and it’s lovely to celebrate this milestone anniversary with so many people.

Some have been walking with us for several years, with lots of friendships made.”

John Holmes has been a keen walker for 60 years, though his mobility is now limited by Type 1 diabetes. He said: “I can’t drive anymore because of diabetes, so the health walks allow me to keep visiting the places I’ve always loved. I enjoy the company

Margaret Black has been a volunteer ranger for 27 years and accompanies the groups on health walks. She said: “It’s wonderful showing places to people who wouldn’t normally have come out on their own.

“It’s increased my own knowledge of the National Park because I’ve learned from the full-time rangers. They know such a lot and they are able to share that with us.”

The Peak District Foundation’s fundraising development manager Sarah Slowther added: “One of our key aims is to enable more people to experience the benefits of the outdoors, so we’re delighted to provide funding which supports these invaluable health walks. Here’s to the next 30 years!”

Wednesday 20 The final Bolsterstone Archaeology and Heritage Group’s talk in the 2021-22 programme is at 7.30pm when Ken Dash is going to tell us more about Meersbrook Hall. This Grade II listed building on the edge of Meersbrook Park was home to the Ruskin Museum for over 60 years, and more recently used as council offices. It is now managed by Heeley Trust. Ken has carried out an extensive survey of the Hall to try and establish how it was built, so there are now accurate scale drawings of the entire building.

It did add that extra touch to what was an incredibly successful afternoon.

After two years of cancellations due to the Covid-19 pandemic the Rotary Club of Wortley is pleased to announce, due to extensive public demand, that the annual Classic and Vehicle Rally is back on the 10th July 2022. This will be the 25th year that this successful Rally will take place in the beautiful gardens and grounds of Wortley Hall.

The event being primarily focused on the Rally also, includes many activities to make the occasion an enjoyable family day outing.

This is the major annual charity event for the Rotary Club of Wortley, with proceeds being donated to the Sheffield Children’s Hospital, Western Park Cancer Research and many other local charities within the area.

We look forward to everyone returning this year and join us for a truly wonderful day.

Miriam Cates, the MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, has described the announcement that the UK's steel safeguards are to be extended for two years as "a real show of support for our steel industry and the thousands of jobs it supports."

Having secured an initial one-year extension to the safeguards in June 2021, Mrs Cates has been working over recent months to persuade the International Trade Secretary to extend them again for another two years. This will keep the UK in line with the EU and the USA, who have all maintained their safeguards up to June 2024.

Welcoming the announcement, Miriam Cates MP said: "This is fantastic news for the UK steel industry and for manufacturing more widely. I'd like to thank the Prime Minister and the International Trade Secretary for personally taking this decisions and for their continued support for our steel sector.

Steel safeguards are tariffs that are applied when the volume of imports of a particular steel product threatens to seriously undercut UK-made steel, or where we are already producing more than enough of a product to meet domestic demand. This allows UK manufacturers to freely trade with other reputable countries such as the USA and the EU, whilst also being protected from the worst behaviour seen in the global marketplace.

Students from across Barnsley College, Barnsley Sixth Form College and Barnsley College Higher Education were acknowledged for their outstanding achievements at the annual Excellence Awards.

AFTER a gap of three years caused by the pandemic, the annual exhibition of art and photography student work at Stocksbridge High School has returned.

Situated in the Bracewell Gallery in the school, there is a wide range of paintings, sculpture, fashion and photography on display.

Stocksbridge Art Society awarded prizes for the best work.

Duncan Sumpner, Head of Art said: “The quality of the artwork this year is some of the best that students have ever produced.

On the night, the Principal’s Award was presented to one student selected from those who won an award during the evening and this year’s award winner was Ellie Woodhall.

Ellie, who is a Childcare T Level student, was also the winner of the Achievement Award and impressed judges with her commitment and dedication. She has become an outstanding ambassador for T Levels, consistently meeting her deadlines and has always acted upon feedback. Upon requesting a placement at a particularly challenging setting, she has risen to the challenge and proven to be an outstanding practitioner.

Ellie said: “I’m so happy to be named the winner of both the Achievement Award and the Principal’s Award. I

have really enjoyed my time at College and I am looking forward to my next step at university.”

Guests enjoyed a two-course meal, prepared by Glorious Catering, at the sponsored event and were entertained by students from Barnsley College’s Dance and Musical Theatre department, with special guest British comedian, actor and radio presenter, Toby Foster, hosting the event.

The keynote speaker for the evening was Mayor of South Yorkshire, Oliver Coppard, who works with young people in Barnsley and is currently Chair of the Board at Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union. He gave a passionate speech about ambition and encouraged the students to be proud of their roots.

Long standing member of Stocksbridge Golf Club, Nigel Eggenton, won the twoday Brian Langley Trophy over the first weekend of July.

The weather was good and the course in great, but somewhat challenging condition, with some long and punishing rough. Nigel's aggregate score over the two days was 132, with two matching rounds of net 66s. With just one 6 on his card over the 36 holes, consistency was the key to his winning score.

Second place was taken by Pete Westhead with a score of 133 over his two rounds, made up of a net 62 and 71.

In third place was Ben Stringer with an aggregate score of 134, from two net 67s. Steve Cunningham matched the

score of 134, but lost out to Ben on countback.

Earlier in the week the Dragons played for their May Medal, a competition delayed because of bad weather on its original date. The first three places overall went to Division 2 players, with Charlie Dale (24) winning with a net 64. Frank Milnes (23) was second with a net 65 and Bill Boucher (29) third with a net 66.

The Division 1 leading score came from Steven Haigh (16) with a net 66. Dennis Haley (16) and Les Wright (14) took the next two places, also with net 66s, but losing out on countback.

The Ladies Section competed for the Cumberland Salver on

26 June, a Stableford format competition. Kath Busfield (27) won with an impressive 41 points. Hilja O'Sullivan (24) was second with 38 points and Margaret Pearson (29) third with 37 points.

Later in the week the Ladies then competed for their Mid-Week 9-hole Stableford.

Sam Wood (17) won with 17 points. Alison Sedgwick (15) was second with 8 points.

Finally, the Gents competed for the Pro's Prize MidWeek Stableford on 30 June.

Les Wright (14) won by a clear margin with 39 points.

Richard Sheppard (12) was second with 35 points. Steve Coutts (10) also scored 35 points, but lost out to Richard on countback.

Windy night for wheelers

Last Tuesday saw the first of the club’s 5 mile time trials from Thurgoland to Hoylandswaine roundabout and back.

Penistone vets team triumphs at Damflask

Penistone’s men’s over50 team claimed first place in their age group at the highly competitive Damflask relays. The team was led out by Martin Ball followed by Jonathan Bentley, Matthew Robinson and Andrew Pearson. Penistone’s men’s over60 team of Malcolm Rose, Richard Docker and Sutcliffe also performed well finishing in 2nd place in their category. Martyn Goodwin and Steve Storey performed well at the Tideswell Fell race getting round in 39-33

and 40-10 respectively. Graihagh Turner finished fourth in the girls under15 race at the final round of the English Junior Fell championships at Helm Hill. Graihagh also finished fourth overall in the series. Tadek Kunicki-Holda claimed first place at the Hoylandswaine Hill race for juniors. Steve Sanders and Tom Fryers tied for first place at the end of the club’s Spring Orienteering series. First lady in the competition was Jane Cockerton. Penistone runners were in
