Mystery man's £100k bequest 'saves' charity A charity has been "saved" after a mysterious benefactor left the organisation £100,000 in his will.

Staff at Age Active, which holds fitness classes for people over 50 in Sheffield, say the money was left by a complete stranger.

The bequest to Age Active was a share of a £1.1m payout to 11 organisations which received donations.

Dave Schofield, from the charity said: “It’s a miracle - like something out of the films or fiction.”

The charity had been considering “shutting up shop completely” after the Covid pandemic lockdowns, Mr Schofield added.

TV comedians: Husband and Wife team, Jon Richardson and Lucy Beaumont performed at Ecclesfield School, with pre-show entertaimnent provided by talented pupils.

While exercise classes had been running at the Victoria Hall in Sheffield city centre for 30 years, there

was no record of the generous stranger ever having attended, he said.

The first staff knew of the bequest was when it received a solicitor’s letter.

“I was going to put it straight in the bin after I opened it and saw it wanted our bank details,” Mr Schofield said.

However, after further investigation he saw included with the letter was a copy of the mysterious benefactor’s will.

“It turned out he’d produced a list of 11 charities he’d left money to, one of which was us Mr Schofield said he thought the benefactor must have known someone who attended classes at the hall and decided it was a worthy cause.

"Drug-fuelled” pest who harassed relatives jailed

Mr Hewitt said: “The messages included references to carrying a gun or a knife and the defendant threatening to take an overdose and a text saying he had just smashed his house up.

"He also said if you ring the police I will have you shot or the house fire-bombed and the lads are ready.”

Hirst pleaded guilty in February to breaching his restraining order and was remanded into custody.

A “drug-fuelled” pest who breached a restraining order by continuing to harass and threaten his relatives has been put behind bars writes Jon Cooper for the Sheffield Star.

Sheffield Crown Court heard on June 8 how Dominic Hirst, aged 33, of Whitwell Crescent, Stocksbridge, Sheffield, was originally convicted of causing damage and threatening to cause damage concerning his relatives, as well as burgling a pharmacy.

Prosecuting barrister David Hewitt said Hirst had attended his auntie and grandparents’ address and made threats with an axe and he received a five-year restraining order in 2019 but between November 2021 and February 2022, he sent disturbing text messages to his auntie.

Zaiban Alam, defending, said Hirst has struggled with alcohol, drug and mental health issues and he has not had the benefit of any support since he has been a young adult.

Judge Graham Reeds QC acknowledged Hirst’s remorse and that many references state that when the defendant is not intoxicated there is a calm, considerate side to him.

But he added that when Hirst is struggling with drugs and alcohol against a difficult emotional backdrop he makes the lives of relatives unbearable.

Judge Reeds said: “This was clearly a persistent breach on many occasions sending texts and turning up at your grandparents’ house.”

He sentenced Hirst to 12 months of custody subject to the three-and-half months he has already spent remanded in prison.

Volunteer award The Friends of Oxley Park Group have been recognised with an Annual Citizens Award, from Stocksbridge Town Council.

The group said “Among others, our group has been integral to the park receiving in the region of £1 million in regeneration funding. The project has already seen a new play area and stone sculptures, and will include a brand new all wheels park, 3G pitches, improved access, a beautiful sculpture trail and expanding the orchard.

Bringing the past into the 21st century at Oughtibridge Mill THE new Oughtibridge Mill development by Sheffield’s award-winning Sky-House Co is combining the best of 21st century technology with a keen sense of the historic site’s heritage.

For alongside the nearly complete 35 Sky-House properties - the acclaimed eco-living concept created by the architects at CODA Studios - the company is also taking on a major renovation and restoration of centuries old properties that provide a vital link with the past.

A 19th century paper mill in the then tiny village of Oughtibridge became a successful and rapidly expanding business by the 1870s and was one of the first to produce paper from wood pulp rather than rags.

AMBULANCE WORKERS DEMONSTRATE AS GMB REVEALS CALLS ALMOST DOUBLE TO 14 MILLION SINCE 2010

Pressures ‘worst ever’ as demand rises ten times faster than number of ambulance workers, says GMB Union Ambulance workers demonstrated this week as data reveals calls have almost doubled to 14 million a year since 2010.

In the financial year 2009/10 there were 7.9 million callouts, according to published NHS data. [1] But by 2021/22 the number had rocketed to 14 million – an increase of 77 per cent. This was ten times faster than the in-

crease in ambulance workers (up 7 per cent) during the same period.

Ambulance workers will today stage a demonstration outside GMB’s annual congress, which begins in Harrogate, Yorkshire.

The increase in pressures on ambulance workers are the result of cuts to other health and care services, GMB said.

The average response time for serious (Category 2) calls was 51 minutes in April 2022, compared to twenty minutes a year before. [2]

Meanwhile, more than a thousand ambulance workers have left their jobs since 2018 to seek a better work life balance, better pay, or to take early retirement. [3]

“The explosion in demand is due to savage cuts to essential services since 2010.

Rachel Harrison, GMB National Officer, said:

“Our members face unbelievable stress and even abuse while they do their best to administer care and save lives.

“Ambulance workers have faced more than a decade of cuts while demand has almost doubled.

“It’s no wonder they are leaving in droves while the service itself is teetering on the brink of collapse.

"GMB members tell us the pressures they face are the worst they have ever experienced.

“We need urgent investment across the health and care services, otherwise we risk an unprecedented crisis.”

SCHOOL ADMISSIONS: SHEFFIELD COUNCIL TO INVESTIGATE TWO CLAIMS OF FRAUD Sheffield Council has received four complaints of alleged fraud relating to school admissions this year, two of which are still pending investigation.

Details of the complaints emerged after a frustrated parent reportedly claimed at an online appeals meeting this week to be aware of other parents submitting false addresses to get their children into school ahead of more deserving candidates.

Father of three who beats cancer returns to the pitch in charity match Having taken on cancer and beaten it, Ben Palmer, 34, helped organise a charity game for cancer raising over £2000.

St Georges Park Thorncliffe was the venue for the charity game to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. Organised

by Ben Palmer, Adam Todd, Dale Shaw and Dave Adams, it saw the current RBL team play against a host of Legends that had played for the club in the past.

The initial target was to raise £500, but they have already surpassed the £2,000 mark with over £500 in cash and over £1,500 on the Just Giving page. Why Katie is supporting St Luke’s 50th anniversary Celebration of Life St Luke’s Hospice super supporter Katie Jackson already raised almost £6,000 in memory of mum Jane by taking part in the Sheffield Half Marathon.

Jane, who lived with husband Paul in Chapeltown, spent the final six weeks of her life being supported by the St Luke’s Community team when she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2019.

And it was the memory of the care Jane and Paul received that prompted daughter Katie to get in training for the tough sporting challenge, eventually raising a fantastic £5,782.

And now Katie is sharing her family’s story and her memories of that time as she supports the St Luke’s 50th anniversary Celebration of Life event, which will be held in the St Luke’s Ecclesall Road South Gardens on July 10, from 2pm to 4pm.

“We’d had one particularly bad time when we had actually had to call an ambulance because mum was in so much pain but when the St Luke’s Community Team got involved, all that changed,” Katie explained.

“They were just wonderful, the most amazing people and they were complete specialists in the type of care and pain relief mum needed.

Yorkshire firms pledge support for Paces as it launches firstever Business Club Businesses from across Yorkshire have signed up to the first-ever business club from Paces, the leading specialist centre, charity and school for individuals with Cerebral Palsy and motor disorders.

The Sheffield-based charity, founded 25 years ago, welcomed the founder members of Club 300, and others interested in joining, to a launch event at Wentworth Woodhouse in Rotherham.

The club has been formed as a way for businesses of all shapes and sizes to support Paces’ life changing work focused on conductive education, which offers children and adults life-changing skills - such as sitting, standing, walking, speaking, communication and self-care.

Membership costs just £300 per year and will entitle businesses to priority access to the charity’s events, exclusive networking opportunities and other marketing support.

“It’s a time when power is completely taken away from you and you are in somebody else’s hands so it was really important to mum and dad that they were with people who knew what they were doing - it gave my dad the confidence that mum had the very best care she could have.

“Most importantly, St Luke’s had time for mum and they made her life as bearable as it possibly could be in the six weeks between her diagnosis and her death.

“The whole team were super practical and for us as a family, the most vital thing was that they were not all doom and gloom - they were really positive, which was very important, and they knew exactly what they were doing.”

At the same time, the St Luke’s team were also able to offer support to husband Paul.

“Mum didn’t get the chance to properly experience everything St Luke’s does but my dad did make use of the St Luke’s bereavement counselling for a short period and found it very helpful,” Katie said.

“They’d been married almost 40 years and had been together since mum was just 17 and the counselling helped dad to understand that it is okay to speak to somebody about that loss and reaffirm that it is very hard.

“The people of Sheffield know how important St Luke’s is for the whole city it’s care for people who don’t have very long left and it is the best care you could possibly receive.

“A lot of people at some point in their life will need to rely on St Luke’s and that’s why offering support is so important, making sure other can people can access the sort of care my mum and dad received.”

Guests at this year’s Celebration of Life event will be able to enjoy tea and coffee, cakes and strawberries and cream or a full afternoon tea by Jameson’s Tea Rooms of Sheffield.

There will be wreath making sessions by Sheffield florist Meadows and Mulberry as well as garden games, crafts and other children’s entertainment as well as a fundraising raffle and music.

Visitors will also be able to share their own special memories on a St Luke’s daisy and in the St Luke’s Book of Celebration.

Investigation of Roman and Iron-Age habitation in Oxspring, Barnsley is awarded National Lottery Heritage Fund support

A local community archaeological group has obtained funding for a trial excavation of a local site which could be associated with Iron-age habitation as well as with the Romans. Thanks to National Lottery players, The National Lottery Heritage Fund has awarded Oxspring Parish Council £9,960 for this dig in Roughbirchworth, Oxspring, after a geophysical survey found probable archaeological features which had been described on old maps as ‘Iron-age camp’. A number of finds have also been

made including Roman coins and brooches (photo).

A spokesperson for the group, Barry Tylee said – ‘this is an exciting opportunity to discover whether there was more Roman and Iron-age activity in our area than previously thought. Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, we can explore this further and we are keen to involve as many people as possible from the local community’.

What a display of local talent, so thank you to all of them for their performances and to all their teachers for the work they do with the school choirs. It is so good to find that music is alive in the valley.

Through Look Local can I thank everyone for all the generous donations which we have received which will go directly to local young people in supporting their music learning . Thanks to a grant from Stocksbridge Council which covered all the costs of providing performance space, insurance etc all donations will literally go to young people.

So, apart from the showcasing of local talent and the great pleasure enjoyed from seeing their performances we are able to open up once again applications for scholarships to pay for music lessons.

Valley Music Festival 2022 The 2022 Valley Music Festival started on June 5th and ran until June 12th. This year we have seen an excellent “Loud and Live “concert revealing some outstanding young local talent, followed by two evenings of school concerts showcasing great performances from local schools. GXO launches academy with College Barnsley College and GXO have officially launched an academy strengthening the partnership between the two organisations and giving GXO apprentices a base at the College’s Old Mill Lane campus.

GXO provides students with a 12-month apprenticeship scheme where they can learn about warehousing and logistics and explore different areas of the business that support its smooth running, such as HR admin, finance

and facilities. Barnsley College supports with the academic training of the apprentices.

GXO is the second-largest logistics company in the country with over 15,000 members of staff. GXO works with companies including ASOS, ASDA, Carlsberg and Weetabix and has more than 140 sites in the UK. Helen Wetherston, Barnsley College’s Director of Business Development, said: “We have

worked with GXO for many years, so we are delighted to be strengthening our partnership with them by launching this Academy.

It will offer GXO apprentices a dedicated space within the College to help them with their academic work. We are looking forward to continuing transforming the lives of those apprentices and helping them to progress to where they want to be.”

Nicola Barlow, Level 2 Warehouse Operative, said: “It has been quite inspiring, when I first started, I didn’t know much about the company or what it could offer. After finding out that I could further my career and climb the career ladder at GXO, everything became much more positive. You feel so valued and appreciated, being a part of the apprenticeship scheme is like a family, it’s lovely.”

Sarah Ottewell, Apprentice Manager, added: “I joined the team in 2017, and since then we have had 407 apprentices with 98% of them graduating and receiving distinctions. It’s not just a credit to us, it’s to Barnsley College and their assessors for the work that they have put into each student.”

LocalHistory Stocksbridge Chamber of Trade Badge An exhibit in the Heritage Museum in Stocksbridge Town Hall is the Badge of Office of the President of the Stocksbridge Deepcar and District Chamber of Trade, formed in 1898 as the ‘Tradesman’s Association’. It was presented to the Urban District Council in 1935 at the British Hall (which used to stand on Manchester Road), to mark the Silver Jubilee of King George V. The Badge of Office consists of a hand-engraved ‘jewel’ in gold and enamel, with an enamel painted representation of Stocksbridge War Memorial – the Clock Tower. It is attached to a blue ribbon, on which eight gold bars show the names and dates of the holders of the office, from Cllr Percy Schofield in 1932 to John Hanwell Esq in 1974.

Skills Minister Visits Northern College The Minister for Apprenticeships and Skills, Alex Burghart, has visited the Northern College at Wentworth Castle to meet with Principal Yultan Mellor and Miriam Cates, the MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge.

The Minister was given a tour of the impressive campus, and spoke to students about their experiences of studying there.

The visit was arranged by Miriam Cates following recent success in helping to secure the future of the college, working together with the Principal and the Government to guarantee its independence and secure funding for its adult skills programmes.

Northern College is one of just two providers of residential adult education in the country, offering a variety of courses to students aged 19

and over. It focuses on providing both educational and pastoral services to its students, many of whom have struggled to engage with education in the past but thrive in this supportive environment.

The College is now keen to take on new students and help adults gain new skills and qualifications. It offers a variety of both residential and non-residential courses at different levels to ensure that education is available to everyone, regardless of their current situation.

Miriam Cates MP said: "It was moving to talk to students who told us how studying at Northern College is having a transformative effect on their lives, and it was great to hear how many go on to find jobs and further training that they once thought were out of reach. The

There was a repeat of the 2021 race with Barnsley AC winning both the men’s and women’s races.

The race first ran in 1993 and was started by Barnsley Rockley Rotary Club and this year over £1,250 was raised to help their charity which aims at eradicating polio from the world.

The Chamber of Trade had organised social functions and raised money for many local good causes.

They also provided four handmade wooden seats to mark the end of the Urban District Council which were placed around the town.

Barnsley Boundary Relay a Success

The annual running of the Barnsley Boundary Relay Race took place last Saturday.

Then because of local government reorganisation, the Stocksbridge and District Chamber of Trade became a member of Sheffield Chamber of Trade.

Starting at Cannon Hall in Cawthorne at 8am the teams run first to West Bretton and onwards taking in Brierley, Thurnscoe, Brampton, Tankersley, Wortley, Langsett, Winscar, Upper Denby before finally heading back to Cannon Hall.

It was a hot sunny day which proved challenging for the runners along with strong winds. The dry conditions meant there were some very fast times.

The 1st XI welcomed Shiregreen to Lucas Wheels Bracken Moor looking to make it five wins from five. Skipper Andy Hibbert won the toss and elected to field first. The 1st XI entertained league above Kexborough in the quarter final of the Presidents Cup. Kexborough won the toss and elected to field first. Ben Cherry continued his brilliant form in the cup and looked in superb touch. He was back up well by Jack Murfin he was removed for 49, one short of a well deserved 50. Cherry and Joe Hibbert began to take the game away from Kexborough, with the pair batting sensibly and positivity. A partnership of 81 was broken when Cherry fell four short of his 100 for 96, a superb innings from the opener. Hibbert was removed in the final over for a well made 44, the 1st finished on a really competitive 208-6.

over the innings. Opening bowlers Rich Marsden and Andy Hibbert were superb early on, Marsden kept it tight from one end, picking up one wicket in the process. Hibbert used this to his advantage picking up three wickets in the process using his variation. Liam Grayson was back into the team after an injury lay off and was on the money straight away. Grayson picked up three wickets, the Kexborough innings never got going. Chris Thwaites picked up the last two wickets as Kexborough were bowled out for 136. The 1st XI will take on Oughtibridge 2nd XI in the semi final on 3rd July.

Stocksbridge 2nd XI 169 beat Doncaster Town 4th XI 160-7 The 2nd XI maintain their promotion charge with a hard fought victory over promotion rivals Doncaster Town.

Batting first, Stocksbridge posted a very competitive 169 all out. Debutant Chris Lowe fell just short of a 50, being caught out on 47. James Hague anchored the innings well, before being dismissed for 36.

Some late hitting by Lyons, Haywood and Thwaites enabled Stocksbridge to post 169.

Stocksbridge's reply in the field got off to a good start, with Haywood forcing a nick behind.

Haywood and Lowe both claimed 2 early wickets and Stocksbridge were well in the game. Paul Hargreaves controlled the middle overs, going for just 24 from his 10 overs. Doncaster kept up with the rate, requiring 70 off the final 10 overs.

Thwaites and Haywood came back into the attack to try and see the victory through. Requiring 30 off the final 3 overs, Doncaster went big at any opportunity. Following the penultimate over going for 14, Doncaster required 14 of the final over. Thwaites restricted the batsmen to just 5 runs and Stocksbridge sealed an impressive victory.

Trevor sets new club record in Cambridge

Last Saturday saw Trevor Mayne travel down to Cambridge for the Cambridge CC 50 mile Open Time Trial. Riding at just over 25mph his time of 1h 59m 19s placed him 47th overall and 20th in the 50-59 year age group. He also set a club age record for the distance at 58 years old.

The competition winners were the Finneys (father Gary and sons, Peter and Andrew) along with Craig Batty.

They had a handicap allowance of 4 shots, but still came in with a net 52.

Their scorecard showed an impressive eagle, 8 birdies and 9 pars. The second placed team of Chris Naylor, Ash Jowitt, Steve Cain and Tommy Redman, combined handicap of 10, also came in with a net 52, but lost out with their back 9 score. In third place were Brian Dobb, Jonathan Bradley, Ash Howe and Alec Cowling (8) with a net 54.

On 3 June there was the Mixed Millenium Trophy, a mixed foursomes format. The winners were a family pairing again, this time a mother and son combination of Hilja and Liam O'Sullivan (14) with a net 67. Second place was a father and daughter team of Roy and Terri Moffett (26), with a net 68. Third place went to John Sykes and Helen Moffett (23) with a net 70.

On 4 June, the Gents competed for the June Monthly Medal. The overall winner came from Division 2, with Ash Jowitt (13) scoring a net 62. Second and third places went to Division 1 players. Mick Shouler (11) scored a

net 65 and Chris Naylor (8) a net 66.

Ash Howe (3) scored the lowest gross round with a 71.

Then on 9 June the Gents played for the monthly Mid-Week Medal. John Slodyczak (11) was the overall winner from Division 1 with a net 63, along with the lowest gross score. Brad Lawton (14) from Division 2 was second and Ash Jowitt (12) from Division 1 was third, both with net 63's, but losing out to John on countback.

The 11 and 12 of June saw two Gents 2-day competitions in action. Firstly the Scratch Cup, a strokeplay competition, was won by Andrew Finney with a 36 hole aggregate score of 138 shots. Danny Costello was second with a score of 141 shots and Peter Finney was third with 149 shots.

For higher handicap players there was also the Stanley Crawshaw Cup. Brian Dobb won the competition with a 36 hole net aggregate of 140 shots. Mick Siddall was second with a net aggregate of 145, the same score as Nasser Hassan, but Mick took it on countback.

The Club's League team has had mixed fortunes over the last two weeks. They suffered a second successive defeat away to Bondhay Golf Club, near to Worksop. The overall score was 6-2 to Bondhay, with Captain Liam O'Sullivan scoring the only Stocksbridge win in the match. Jubilee Weekend Golf Bonanza Stocksbridge golfers enjoyed the benefits of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee with several competitions. The Legion team started the second half brighter and Ash Gray crossed from the left and Denham Saxton from a tight angle managed to head in to the top corner.

Just as Legion began to look in control, Ash Burbeary rolled back the years, beating his man cutting inside to slam home in to the top corner - a trademark goal.

His finish was bettered only by the next goal a few minutes later, which saw Harley Wilson hit a rocket in the top corner from 25 yards out.

With 10 minutes left Legion manager and substitute Adam Todd beat his marker in the box only to be dragged down, which resulted in Denham Saxton converting the penalty for his second goal.

The game was sealed in the last minute when a marauding run down the wing by Paddy Carrig finished with him squaring for Jacob Walkland, who cut a composed figure and slotted past Dennis to complete the scoring.

Agony for Tigers in superheat loss

Peterborough Panthers...............................45 Sheffield Tigers..............................................45 SHEFFIELD were involved in the Premiership’s first ever super heat at Peterborough on Monday - but were forced to settle for just one league point.

The Tru Plant Tigers drew 4545 at the home of the reigning Champions over the 15 programmed heats.

But in an exciting revamp of the rules for 2022, that enforced the new ‘super heat’ with extra league points on the line.

Jack Holder and Tobiasz Musielak were the duo who earned the additional race with a 4-2 in a scintillating Heat 15.

And they were the pairing Tigers’ team boss Simon Stead put his faith in once again.

With the unique ‘4-3-2-0’ Pairs scoring format coming into play for the decider only, Peterborough took a 6-3 though as the hosts claimed their first Premiership points of the year from a meeting where the Tigers were six points up with just four races to go.

Boss Stead said: “It was disappointing that we sort of fell short in the latter heats.

“I can’t quite believe it to be honest because we’ve done so much throughout the meeting; they’ve

had to use a tactical substitute but we’ve nullified that.

“The two 5-1s against [Heats 13 and 14] didn’t do us any favours at all and put us on the back foot.

“In the end, I think we did well to take it to a super heat, but we have to take it on the chin unfortunately.”

The Tru Plant Tigers will be represented by Adam Ellis and Tobiasz Musielak in Round Two of the Premiership Pairs at Ipswich’s Foxhall Stadium on Thursday (June 16, 7.30).

The next team action sees the side head to King’s Lynn on Thursday, June 23 (7.30).
