A young South Yorkshire fundraiser has said he "felt like royalty" after attending the first garden party at Buckingham Palace since 2019, writes the BBC. Tobias Weller, 11, from Sheffield, has raised more than £157,000 for Paces School, where he is a student, and the city's Children's Hospital Charity.

In 2020, Tobias, who has cerebral palsy and autism, won the first Captain Sir Tom Moore Young Unsung Hero Award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

He said his palace visit was "amazing".

Tobias was nicknamed "Captain" after he was inspired by Capt Sir Tom to raise money during the pandemic lockdowns.

His exploits saw him become the youngest person on record to feature in the Honours list when it was announced he would receive the British Empire Medal.

Tobias said he "still can't believe it's true" that he was able to visit Buckingham Palace on Wednesday.

Tobias said he had afternoon tea in the palace's gardens and that the passion fruit tartlet was his favourite.

He said: "Lots of people recognised me and congratulated me on my fundraising. It made me feel magnificent. I totally felt like royalty, it was such a magical afternoon."

Tobias said he was now making final preparations for his latest fundraising event, Tobias in the Park, a campaign to make playgrounds more accessible to children with disabilities.

He said he would launch the event and complete his kilometre on Saturday 21 May using his walker in Sheffield's Endcliffe Park.

He stressed he would be "chuffed to bits" if other people could take part too between 21-28 May.

Council Tax Energy Rebate roll out to begin this month Sheffield City Council will begin to roll out the Council Tax Energy Rebate Scheme this month to around 215,000 households in the city.

In February 2022, the Government announced millions of households are to receive up to £350 to help with the cost of living following a rise in the energy price cap.

All domestic electricity customers will get £200 off their energy bills from October, with households in Council Tax Bands A to D receiving a £150 Council Tax Energy Rebate.

Residents who pay their Council Tax by direct debit – around 138,000 households in Sheffield - are to receive a rebate directly into their bank account.

To minimise the risk of fraudulent applications, the Council took the first Direct Debit payment to ensure it cleared before paying the rebate. Therefore, with those first payments being paid in April, the earliest date the rebate can be paid is May. This also gave the Council the time necessary to carry out testing for this new scheme, ensuring it minimised the risk of payment errors.

Those who do not pay by Direct Debit – around 77,000 households in Sheffield - will receive their rebate via Post Office Payout.

They will receive a letter, including a barcoded voucher for £150, which customers will need to take to the Post Office, with a proof of ID, to claim the rebate.

Alternatively, customers can opt for the Post Office to top up their energy bill instead.

Letters and vouchers are expected to be issued to non-Direct Debit customers in the coming months.

Customers who do not automatically qualify A discretionary scheme has been set up for those who do not automatically qualify for the Council Tax Energy Rebate Scheme.

Some awards from this scheme will be made automatically, but the Council will also have an application process for households who aren’t liable for Council Tax, but are liable for energy costs.

The application process is currently being finalised and a further update will be issued when the scheme is live and ready to receive applications.

A mountain bike event billed as the "biggest little race in the world" returned after being cancelled for two years due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Tim Hardie, Head of Revenues & Benefits, said: “We absolutely appreciate residents in Sheffield, like people up and down the country, are concerned about finances and the cost of living crisis. I want to reassure residents we’re working hard to get it rolled out as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

The race was founded by a group of local riders in 2011, including champion racer Steve Peat, who is among a number of elite riders taking part.

All proceeds go to maintaining the trails and to supporting mountain bike projects around the city.

The race, which is organised by a team of volunteers, is run as a not-for-profit event.

"It's an event for the community, by the community, with the sole purpose of raising money to keep the trails in Greno great and have a bloody good time in the process," organisers said.

The event attracts over 200 entries, and 3,000 spectators, and is open to riders of all ages and abilities.

Organisers said they were also trying to make the event as sustainable as possible this year, and urged anyone attending to play their part in "leaving these woods cleaner than we found them".

Greno Woods is a nature reserve owned and managed by Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust.

Penistone chosen for broadband upgrade pilot

Prestigious award for Town council

"I wrote to the Minister in February to make the case for Yorkshire Water's Penistone bid, and I'm delighted that our area has been selected by the Government as the site for this trial."

Penistone and surrounding communities are set to benefit from a significant upgrade to broadband infrastructure thanks to an innovative new scheme being trialled in the area. A new project led by Yorkshire Water and partially funded by the Government will see fibre-optic cables being run through existing water pipes between Barnsley and Penistone.

Broadband providers will then be able tap into this network to deliver gigabitcapable connections to around 8,500 homes and businesses along the route, helping to level up connectivity in hardto-reach communities and rural areas.

This 'Fibre in Water' scheme is a UK first and will demonstrate a quicker and

more cost-effective way of connecting fibre optic cables to homes, businesses, and mobile masts, without the disruption caused by digging up roads and land.

Welcoming the announcement of £3.2 million of government investment to kickstart the project, local MP Miriam Cates said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for our local area to lead the UK in trialling innovative new technology, whilst also offering significant benefits to residents and businesses in Penistone and the surrounding villages.

"Improving broadband connectivity is a key part of levelling up our area and delivering more opportunities for local people. A number of constituents have

Dean’s Verger Recognised for 26 years service to Sheffield Cathedral and the city of Sheffield On Wednesday 12 May, Dean’s Verger, David Maw, was recognised for his dedication and service to Sheffield Cathedral and the city of Sheffield.

His service spans more than a quarter of a century when he attended this year’s garden party at Buckingham Palace. David was nominated to attend by a former Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, Andrew Coombe, DL. David started his career at the cathedral on 2 January 1996. He became Dean’s Verger in 2007. The role of Dean’s Verger is a very important one in a cathedral. Basically, David

The Very Reverend Abi Thompson, Dean of Sheffield said: “David is often the first person I see when I arrive at the cathedral and the last person I say goodnight to as he locks up the building. As well as taking incredible pride in his work, David is a superb colleague – wise, experienced and committed, but also gentle, thought-

ful and caring. As the new Dean at the cathedral I have been so well supported by him and I’m looking forward to sharing many laughs with him in the years to come. There’s not a cathedral in the country that sparkles and shines like Sheffield Cathedral – and that’s down to David and the team he leads. I’m wishing him a wonderful and well deserved day!

David has been part of many memorable events during his 26-year career, both good and bad. One of his first memories was the death of Diana Princess of Wales and a sea of flowers laid across the cathedral forecourt. He describes closing the cathedral doors at the start of the Covid lockdown and not knowing when the building would reopen as the worst. Leading the coffin of his boyhood footballing hero Emlyn Hughes in and out of the cathedral was the most emotional. “My legs turned to jelly when the choir started to sing You’ll Never Walk Alone” he says. “I also met and married my wife at the cathedral. I shouldn’t forget that!” David added.

“I’m very proud of the cathedral and I feel both honoured and humble to be able to come to work in this great building. I’ve taken great pride in serving the cathedral and the community of Sheffield.”

Queen's Platinum Jubilee Celebrations in Hunshelf Plans are well ahead to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in the Parish of Hunshelf.

Parishioners and friends are invited and encouraged to make and display Scarecrows across the parish. The theme is “Royalty through the Ages”. To take part, register your scarecrow be emailing hunshelfscarecrow@ gmail.com with your name, address and chosen scarecrow by Friday 20th May. Scarecrow voting forms will be available from the telephone box by 29th May. Prizes will be awarded for the favourite scarecrows, as voted by parishioners and visitors.

On Thursday 2nd June at 9.45pm the beacon at the Isle of Skye will be lit as part of the National Beacon Chain.

On Friday 3rd June at 10.00am, Green Moor Church is holding a Summer Fair and will be serving bacon sandwiches and refreshments. At 11.00am Kathryn Battye will lead a Parish Walk from the Isle of Skye to view the Scarecrows at Underbank, Snowden Hill etc. Walkers are asked to wear strong shoes and be prepared for ups, downs and stiles.

Refreshments and comfort stops will be available en route.

Saturday 4th June, Hunshelf Parish Council has no events are planned but we would like to encourage everyone to support the Fun Day being arranged by neighbouring Oxspring Parish Council.

On Sunday 5th June, people are encouraged to dress in red, white and blue, or wear a fancy hat for food, friendship and fun. At 11.00am until 12 noon, a Service of Celebration, open to everyone, will be held in Green Moor Church. From 1.00pm there will be a Parish Picnic on Delf Field.

Everyone is asked to bring their own picnic. A Platinum Jubilee Baking competitions will be arranged for children – decorated bunting biscuits and cup cakes are requested, and for adults – a decorated cake. At 3.00pm there will be traditional children's races, games and prizes. The National Anthem will be played at the close of events.

Sheffield Cathedral Dean recognised is responsible for everything, from the opening and closing of the building to the safety of the congregation and anyone who works at the cathedral or visits. David puts it very succinctly: “I look after the cathedral and everyone who comes through the door from homeless people right up to the Queen.” Indeed, when it was announced a few days ago the Queen was not able to attend the garden party, David took it in his stride telling his colleagues: “I’ve already ticked that one off the list. I met Liz when she came to the cathedral for the Royal Maundy Service in April 2015!”

Local Ramblers Tick Off Tops Seven local hillwalkers have contributed many of the visits to 130 of Yorkshire’s best hilltops the Yorkshire Ramblers’ Club, tackled to celebrate their 130th year. In fact, 103 of them and collectively YRC members visited all 130 in just 51 days, finishing last week.

These tops range from Stanage Edge’s High Neb to Roseberry Topping overlooking Middlesbrough, The Yorkshire Three

Peaks in the west to Scarborough’s Seamer Beacon. Some had good paths but others needed careful navigation or short scrambles to reach their tops.

Founded in 1892 as a Victorian gentlemen’s mountaineering club, the YRC should not to be confused with 1935 newcomer, the Ramblers Association, now called ‘ramblers’. The YRC’s founders chose the name with Victorian understatement as they were and are independently-minded hill-goers with a wide range of interests including climbing, mountaineering and caving. Already this year they have climbed on the Costa Blanca and skied hut-to-hut in Norway. Next week members head for the Cairngorms and then the Pyrenees in June.

The club meet every month or so, have clubhouses in the Lakes and Dales and welcome like-minded prospective members.

World class classical musicians head for Bradfield After two cancelled years, the Bradfield Festival of Music at St Nicholas’ Church in High Bradfield, Sheffield, returns this year and takes place in June.

There will be performances from artists new to Bradfield: Jean Johnson (clarinet), Danny Driver (piano), the “Bella Tromba” trumpet quartet, and pianist Jeneba Kanneh-Mason.

Jean Johnson has played as a chamber music clarinet soloist across the UK, Europe and America - she plays with “a sense of freedom and flair…. bounding with energy”. Danny Driver plays with “impeccable technique and musicianship”, and has performed across the UK, Europe, Asia, and north America; his recent CD release has received rave reviews. The Gents section of the Club played in the Jubilee Cup Competition on 14 May. The competition is a pairs and a better ball stroke play format. Players received an allowance of 80% of their Club handicap. In warm, sunny and calm conditions the scoring overall was excellent. The winners, with a very impressive net 55, were Doug Needham and Bill Boucher and they started their round well with a birdie 3 on the first hole. Steve Page and Pete Elliott matched the net 55, but lost out to Doug and Bill on countback. Craig Batty and Joe Sedgwick came in third with a net 57.

The Stocksbridge Bandits held their monthly singles Stableford Competition on 10 May. Gary Marsland (21) was the overall winner with a score of 38 points. Roy Moffett (19) was second with 35 points. Naz Hassan (16) came third with 34 points.

A busy week for Penistone footpath runners kicked off with the latest round of the Trunce at Oxspring. In the junior Trunce race Tadek Kunicki-Hola claimed third place and Oliver France was not too far behind in eighth. In the senior race James Fryers claimed an excellent second place in 27-47. First lady back for Penistone was Lesley Parker in 3713. Steve Storey won the men’s over60 age category in 36-26 and Barbara Haigh also claimed first in the ladies over70 category in 47-41.

The following day saw Penistone enter several teams into the popular Rother Valley relays.

Standout team performances were the men’s over50 team who claimed first place and the mixed team who claimed second. The men’s over50 team was made up of Shaun Dimelow, Martin Ball, Andrew Pearson and Matthew Robinson. Runners in the mixed team were James Fryers, Nichola McNulty, Rhianna Banford and Rob Lees. Penistone had five runners at the Pontefract 10k and again enjoyed success. The men’s team of Richard Cottam, Martin Ball, Andrew Heppenstall and Gareth Irvine claimed second place in the men’s team event with all four runners going close to 38 minutes or quicker. Martin Ball continued his recent good form picking up first place in the men’s over50 category in a time of 36-51.

Another runner in good form is Keith Gordon who claimed first place in the men’s over70 category at the super tough Snowdonia Half marathon. On the fells junior runner Graihagh Turner donned the Yorkshire vest to compete in the inter counties competition at Great Whernside. She came fifth overall in the race and her Yorkshire team picked up a bronze medal. Second claim member Hugh Mackie ran 3,000m on the track and claimed a silver medal at the Yorkshire Track and Field championships. Hugh’s time was a very quick 8-48.

Tigers comeback win Ipswich 43-47 Sheffield Tigers

SHEFFIELD produced a fine comeback at Ipswich to maintain their magnificent start to the season.

The Tru Plant Tigers ran out 4743 winners at Foxhall on Monday - despite being eight points down with just two races gone.

They almost found themselves on the receiving end of a third straight 5-1 in Heat Three before captain Kyle Howarth and Tobiasz Musielak benefitted from a mistake from Witches’ skipper Danny King in a key early moment.

From then on in, the Tigers found their feet with seven race winners and six heat advantages as they added another three league points to their Premiership tally.

Captain Howarth top scored for the Owlerton outfit with ten points while Adam Ellis and guest Chris Harris, in for the injured Jack Holder, both reached paid double figures.

Craig Cook enjoyed a solid night against his old side while Musielak rounded his evening off with a win after a tricky start.

There were further positive outings from reserve pairing Stefan Nielsen and Connor Mountain who contributed seven points in total between them.

And after extending their unbeaten start to five wins in all completions, Tru Plant Tigers’ team boss Simon Stead was again proud of his side.

“We got caught napping early on but we chased the set-up and eventually got our noses in front,” he said.

“Even after the first couple, I always felt confident that if we kept working hard we could get through to Heat 15 and get the job done.

“I’m really pleased with the boys tonight - it was genuine, hard work from them, pulling together, helping one another with setups and that and they came back strong and did really well.”

Sheffield now prepare for another ern Group decider knowing another big night at Owlerton this Thurs- victory would book their place in the Final against King’s Lynn. day (May 19, 7.30).
