Liberty Steel UK has set out restructuring plans with jobs set to be cut at its Stocksbridge plant but with new roles created in Rotherham.

The company has launched a consultation on the restructuring of the Stocksbridge works and its downstream operations.

The restructuring of the special alloys businesses is designed to enhance their productivity and competitiveness ahead of a possible sale or partnership.

The move is set to result in 162 potential job reductions at Stocksbridge.

Liberty will also invest in increasing production at its Rotherham works, with a potential increase of 161 jobs and opportunities to transfer from other sites.

Liberty is aiming to develop the Rotherham mill into a two million tonne per annum (mtpa) recycling production facility feeding its downstream rolling mills producing both long and flat products.

Jeffrey Kabel, chief transformation officer, Liberty Steel Group said: "Liberty's special alloys are unique, high potential businesses, and their quality products are prized by customers in strategic sectors such as aerospace and energy.

“The last few years haven't been easy for Stocksbridge Speciality Steels, but I'm optimistic that this restructuring and its sale to the right sort of buyer can give it the support it needs going forward. It's a great opportunity for the site to develop and focus on the world-leading, highvalue manufacturing it excels at.

Unfortunately the restructuring will apparently result in a small reduction in the size of the workforce at Stocksbridge, but Liberty have said that an equivalent number of jobs are being created at their Rotherham site. The unions will be involved in this, and I'll be monitoring the situation closely as the process continues to ensure that workers are treated fairly.

As always I'll continue to engage closely with management, unions, and the Government as Stocksbridge moves towards a sale, and I'll do all that I can to encourage a buyer who will be able to put the site on a stronger footing and secure the future of this company which is so important both locally and as part of our wider UK steel industry.”

8 year old’s short story An 8 year old girl from Penistone has written a short book and is going to be reading the story and selling signed copies to raise money for Ukraine.

Charlotte, a Y3 pupil at Penistone St Johns school, originally wrote the book for a school talent contest and the teachers loved it so much she decided to get copies printed and sold these first at the school’s fundraising day for Ukraine.

The story is suitable for young children aged up to 8 it would be great to get some support and help.

The young author wants to raise as much as she can so thought of the idea of reading the story at the library. I am so proud of her. The story was all her own and she has illustrated every page as well.

She told Look Local “I’m very excited and so happy to be raising money for people in Ukraine.”

Charlotte’s Mum said “It is so hard for children not to be worried about what they are seeing and hearing and hard to explain a reason for what is going on so it is nice to give Charlotte a positive focus and to help her do her bit to help people.”

Charlotte will be at Penistone library 10.30 am on Saturday 30 April.

Nursery set to be saved from closure by local school Deepcar Primary Partnership (which consists of Royd Nursery Infant School and Deepcar St John’s Church of England Junior School) is set to step in and take over Deepcar Pre-School and Daycare – saving a crucial local provision for children and parents.

Many of the city’s nurseries have been struggling financially over recent years, due to underfunding and the impact of the pandemic. Deepcar Pre-School and Daycare has provided childcare for the families and children in Deepcar for over 20 years, but they have decided they are no longer financially viable and will not be offering any service from 1st April 2022.

In a letter to parents, a number of reasons for this were outlined. This included the impact of the COVID – 19, ‘work from home’ directives, and financial pressures due to nurseries not being eligible for the government’s COVID recovery funds.

Deepcar Pre-School and Daycare stated that this has resulted in their small reserves of funding being depleted. The letter goes on to add that the incoming rises in energy bills and national insurance contributions has made the nurseries’ financial position untenable.

Rather than let a valuable community asset cease, Deepcar Primary Partnership are looking to provide this service, in the same premises.

Louise Jones, Executive Headteacher of Royd Nursery Infant School and Deepcar St Johns Church of England Junior School, explained the plans: “It’s so sad to see how much nurseries are suffering financially. Whilst the financial difficulties will also be significant for the school, the governing body feel that morally it is the right thing to save this crucial local provision. From an educational point of view there are many benefits. The children will now start their journey aged 2 and will be with as all the way through until they are 11 years old.

Miss Jones went on to add “We are hopeful that families will be offered the same service currently received and we’ll employ staff from the Deepcar Pre-School and Daycare. Two year old provision, plus before and after school clubs, will be offered. The aim is to take all three-year-olds into the school provision and they will be based in the school’s previous Nursery building.

“There is an awful lot to sort out to make this happen, but we are working closely with Deepcar Pre-School and Daycare to resolve this situation. The school and nursery have written to parents seeking their views and the response has been really positive.”

Donated Easter eggs stolen

Protect your family and support ours with Paces’ Make a Will Month A South Yorkshire charity is offering people the opportunity to write or update their Will this spring with some of the area’s leading solicitors for a suggested donation of just £100.

Paces, the leading specialist centre, charity and school for individuals with Cerebral Palsy and motor disorders, is organising Make a Will Month this May and asking everyone to consider taking part.

A trolley full of chocolate Easter eggs, collected for children in hospital, have been stolen.

The donated gifts were at the Morrison's in Ecclesfield, Sheffield and were due to be given to Sheffield Children's Hospital next week.

Morrison's worker David Howe, whose son is being treated at the hospital for a brain tumour, said a "low life" had taken the eggs leaving him "upset".

"We will do our best to replace them out of our own pocket," he said.

The trolley of donated eggs was at the entrance of the supermarket before the alleged theft, Mr Lowe said.

"How disgusting can you get?" he added.

Following the incident, "generous" shoppers have donated more Easter eggs, along with over £700 in cash.

"The response we have had from this has been amazing although not surprising," Mr Lowe said, adding the generosity of friends, family and colleagues has been "fantastic".

It was one year to the day, this week (Tuesday 12 April) that a local man set off on a walk around Britain.

Jim Morton, from Penistone has reached another milestone in his quest to walk the entire mainland coast of the UK and visit each lighthouse on the way.

After one year of walking. Jim has covered over 5750 miles and raised £18,030.

He is currently on the coastline of Kent, heading towards Ramsgate, accompanied by his wife and two dogs.

Another 2000 miles is still ahead for Jim and a welcome return to home, Penistone.

All proceeds raised will be going to our Fire Fighters Charity and our local Scouts and Brownies.

As this open day is happening a number of your local fire fighters will be doing a 5km yomp around the village, this is in full fire kit and wearing a BA set.

The chip pan unit will be in attendance and they will be doing a demonstration, this is definitely not one to be missed.

The firestation’s car park will be taken up by the demonstrations, so please make sure you leave ample time to park your car safely and make sure it's not blocking the entrance.

Firefighters will also be hosting a raffle with some amazing local prizes donated by our local businesses.

The Open Day/ Fire Fighter Challenge is at Stocksbridge Fire Station on Saturday 30th of April 11am whilst 2pm.

High Green Musical Theatre Group are once again returning to the Eppic Theatre in Ecclesfield to celebrate the memory of their former director Audrey Shipley. Audrey sadly passed away in August 2021. She directed the group from 1979 to 2002.

'Musical Memories' is a tribute to Audrey and features songs from many of the shows that Audrey directed. These shows

include 'Oliver', 'The Wizard of Oz'and 'Hello Dolly'. Some past members have returned for the show, including Audrey's nephew Graham Swallow, and the group's founding member Harvey Kay. Laura Hall joined the group in 1993 and has fond memories of Audrey. She said "I remember Audrey giving me the chance to sing a solo in a show back in 2000. She really gave me the

Forgemasters calls for new apprentices

Students exhibit artwork at the Cooper Gallery Barnsley College Art and Design students are showcasing their ‘Usual’ exhibition at the Cooper Gallery until Saturday 30 April.

The exhibition is a collection of print-based works produced by Level 3 Art and Design students in response to the theme of everyday life, which could be specific to the student’s everyday life, their family or Barnsley. The collection of work features different print techniques including reduction lino prints, wood cut, screen-print and collagraph print-based works.

Barnsley College representatives Liz Leek, Deputy Principal Culture, Place and Communities; Tony Johnson, Vice Principal Corporate; and Rachel James, Director of Teaching and Learning; were invited to the exhibition to judge the students’ work and award certificates for the best in print. They were extremely impressed by all of the students’ work but narrowed it down to three best in print winners: Caycee Taylor, Ava Bloomfield and Alisha Kitchen; one Principal’s Award winner, Isabel Edwards; and the Overall winner, Ellie Barnes. The students received a voucher of their choice plus a College certificate. In addition, the College purchased a copy of each piece of artwork which will be displayed on-campus.

Sheffield Forgemasters has started its latest drive to recruit 19 apprentices for September, across a wide range of disciplines.

Following the historic company’s acquisition by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) last year, successful applicants will join one of the country’s most advanced manufacturing businesses during a hugely exciting period and become part of an award-winning apprenticeship scheme.

Applicants must be at least 16 years old and those who are successful will receive fullyfunded training, working towards a professional qualification whilst getting paid.

Rick Franckeiss, Learning & Development Manager at Sheffield Forgemasters, said: “This is an exciting time for new apprentices to join the company, which has a secure future following its MoD acquisition that will enhance its reputation and position as a world-leading centre for engineering.”

The company will invest an incredible £400m over the next 10 years to support its defencecritical assets, including plans for a new heavy forge line and building, a flood alleviation scheme and major machine tool replacements, which will be unmatched outside of the UK. Rick added: “The opportunities that we now have for ap-

prentice career development are extraordinary as we intensify our work for the MoD and pioneer manufacturing technologies for civil nuclear power and offshore wind power.

“I’m delighted that we are in a position to offer 19 skilled apprenticeships ahead of our September intake and we expect a strong response to the launch. I’d like to emphasise that gender and background are no barriers to jobs in this company and we welcome the broadest diversity of applicants.”

Local History Wortley Top Forge – Local connections

Many readers will have visited Wortley Top Forge over the years – it is a fascinating survival of one of the earliest ironworks in the country, but you may just have ridden on the miniature train and watched the waterwheel. Now you can come and hear the latest research from one of the tour guides Gordon Parkinson, who is giving a talk to the Bolsterstone Archaeology and Heritage Group on Wednesday 20 April at 7.30pm. It will be in the Christ Church meeting room on Manchester Road in Stocksbridge; refreshments will be available.

Gordon will examine the connections between the families that have affected Wortley Forges (there is both Top Forge and Low Forge). It is a complicated story of marriages between local families, with the Wilsons of Broomhead Hall constantly involved in some way.

By 1640 Sir Francis Wortley had used his mother's wealth to build Wortley Forges.

In the Civil War, the Forges produced cannon shot for the Marquis of Newcastle to defend Sheffield Castle, and Christopher Wilson of Broomhead Hall was a parliamentary captain in the war.

In 1680, John Wilson's daughter Ann married John Spencer III of Cannon Hall, and his son Matthew took over as manager at Wortley Forges by 1700 – there is a stone in the building inscribed MW 1713. Another daughter of John Wilson, Suzanna, married the Rev. Thomas Cockshutt and their son John Cockshutt followed Matthew Wilson at the Forges in 1738, and built Wortley Tin Mill in 1743.

Top Forge made railway axles, forged from wrought iron made at Low Forge, rod iron for nail-making and other products. It is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument and is owned by South Yorkshire Industrial History Society. You can visit on Sundays from 11am to 5pm, but following Gordon’s talk, we are arranging a special guided tour of the site for Bolsterstone Archaeology and Heritage Group members and friends.

Rose gets new Steels humbled by leaders club record Nineteen runners from Penistone Footpath Runners took part in the second race of the South Yorkshire Road League in fine conditions last Wednesday, First back for the club and winning the race was Kai Sunman in a time of 26:32 on the challenging undulating course. Andrew Heppenstall was next home in a time of 30:13 with Gareth Irvine finishing in 30:45.

The series includes four races at various venues across the county, with prizes awarded across each age category.

Elite V65 runner Malcolm Rose raised his own personal bar and that of the 10k age category record with a superb time of 39:48 at the Elvington Airfield 10k. The performance saw him finish first in this age category and 31st overall.

But a week ago, Eric Wilkinson was crowned the winner of the Dyson-Suggett Winter Cup, at Stocksbridge Golf Club, with an aggregate score of 54 points. Over the course of the Winter Season, the best 12 scores for each player count.

With an average of 4.5 points per scoring round, Eric was well clear of his nearest rivals, Eddie Smith and Phil Beaumont, who both finished joint second with 44 points.

On the 6 April, the Dragons Summer Cup got underway in cool and breezy conditions. Any score near to par (36 points) was a good result and

Les Wright (14) went one better with 37 points. One point back on 36 was Martyn Bradwell (16), with Charlie Dale (24) in third on 35 points.

The Ladies started their summer midweek 9 hole Stableford Competition.

It was an O'Sullivan one two, with Liana (2) beating her mother, Hilja, with 11 and 7 points respectively.

The Gents April Medal, delayed by a week, was played on 9 April and an excellent sized field took part in some sunny, but chilly weather. The course was set up in excellent condition, with some challenging pin positions.

The Division 1 winner was Liam O'Sullivan (3), the League Team Captain, with a net 65 and a round with three birdies. Second place in Division 1 went to Paul Blake (8) with a

net 66, the same score as Rob Betts (11), but a better back 9.

In Division 2, Glyn Stainforth (18) was the winner with a net 65. Nick Broomhead (15) was second with a net 66 and Phil Beaumont (22) third with a net 68. Glyn Stainforth was the overall winner across both divisions with a better back 9 than Liam.

On Sunday 10 April, in glorious Spring sunshine, the Gents played for a Pro's Prize. Craig Batty (5) led the field by a clear margin with 42 points.

Craig's round included 4 birdies and his gross score was one under par. In a distant second place was Malcolm Ingles (18) with 38 points. Dave Buxton (10) was third with 37 points.

vain as the visitors eventually went down by 62pts – 10pts. Veteran forward Brendan Rowett took the Clarach Builders Man of the Match award for a vintage display, rolling back the Years, before announcing his retirement from the game.

The Fox Catering Man of Steel for March has been awarded to powerful 2nd rower Jordan ‘spud’ Fletcher, kindly sponsored by Ellie’s Sandwich Shop, for a string of consistent performances throughout the Month. Hooker Mikey Hartley & that man Adam Frith at scrum half were also in contention.

Church fall to defeat on last day Toolstation NCEL Premier Division Penistone Church 0-1 Staveley Miners’ Welfare A report by Martin Webb Church started their last match of the season on a beautiful spring afternoon, in a confirmed 6th place. Staveley arrived in mid-table, but are being voluntarily relegated.

The match had the feel of a preseason friendly.

The only goal of the came shortly after the hour mark when Church gave the ball away in midfield in the 66th minute and a deflected looping shot fell for Declan Howe, who headed the ball to the right of the stranded Snaith.

PCFC 0 Staveley 1 Church responded immediately with some much more direct play. However, despite their best efforts the ball just would not run for them. Staveley looked

the more likely to score, but the match ended with no further goals.

Full Time PCFC 0 Staveley 1 Church at one point looked like they could draw level in this match, but luck just was not with them on the day. A wonderful season for Church ended with a rare defeat, a large proportion of the 232 stayed behind to applaud both teams from the pitch.

Well done to the “ever present” Jordan Coduri for starting every game this season (League and cup) Manager Steve Lenthall “Credit to Staveley they came with a young side and they dominated the game to be fair, they took the game to us, they’ve played on the front foot and we weren’t at the races at all.
