Appeal for information in connection to missing hen harrier

The bird was reported as missing on 10 February 2022.

A wildlife crime investigation has been launched following reports of a missing hen harrier in the Stocksbridge area of Sheffield.

This is not the first time a protected Hen Harrier has gone missing in the area, the last reported missing raptor was back in August 2018.

Hen harriers are a ‘red list’ species of bird fully protected by the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981. The bird was part of a monitoring project by the RSPB and was fitted with a satellite tracking tag in 2021.

On 23 February partners from South Yorkshire Police, the National Wildlife Crime Unit and Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) conducted searches in the area following the bird’s disappearance. Sadly the bird was not found.

The area is close to land used for grouse shooting.

The RSPB and other agencies believe that many have been victims of deliberate persecution because they prey on young game birds.

Developers resubmit plans High Green

Outline planning has been received to erect 41 dwellings on fields off Wood Royd Road, Deepcar. The plans are a re-submission of plans that were denied a year ago.

Campaigners had fought off previous planning, but at the time were wary of the plans re-surfacing.

Campaigners back in 2021 commented "It is a great relief for the community that this has been refused. We can enjoy the victory for now, but we are expecting this could go to a public enquiry, as is happening with Hollin Busk."

Now developers have re-submitted the plans and campaigners want to keep the fields off Wood Royd Road, as they are.

One resident told Look Local: “The changed proposal have tried to address the issues that had it rejected by the SCC Planning Committee in February 2021. However, having read all of the documentation, very little has changed and the same issues and problems that

were relevant then are relevant now. For example, the access road is still planned to be off Wood Royd Road near to Armitage Road with associated issues for pedestrians crossing to and from the site; this is potentially another loss of valued green space, particularly following the decision for Hollin Busk; and flooding in the area is still very much relevant. All at a time when we are starting to realise just

how important green spaces and the loss of biodiversity are to the environment.

The general feelings of the residents are of disappointment that a new planning application has been submitted.”

The plans were first submitted in October 2019.

“Although the fields off Wood Royd Road are relatively unknown to a lot of residents in the area - mainly because of where they are situated and can't really be seen from the road - if a housing development was built on this land, it would put a huge strain on local infrastructure, an abundance of wildlife habitats would be lost and the already dangerous traffic situation on Wood Royd Road would be made much worse by adding more cars to the road and a dangerous junction almost opposite Armitage Road. So it's extremely important that we pull together and fight for the right to keep our areas of natural beauty free from housing developments and ensure that these developments are built in the right places.”

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone.

Park improvements continue Stocksbridge based conservation charity the Steel Valley Project have continued to put down roots in the local community this week by planting 12 native trees in the recently refurbished Oxley Park Playground.

The tree planting project is the latest in a series of improvements made to the park over the last year. The Steel Valley Project planted the trees with the help of its local volunteer programme with the funding provided by the government’s Towns Fund and working with Sheffield City Council.

Tom Newman, General Manager of the Steel Valley Project said: “We’re really glad to be able to support the ongoing improvement work in Stocksbridge. Thanks to the help of our dedicated volunteers, we have delivered this tree planting project in Oxley Park. Planting these native tree species in and around the playground will increase the biodiversity value of the park which will attract bird and insect life into the area. The trees will also provide carbon capture, improved air quality,

and much needed shade for those using the park in the summer months for years to come.”

The work in the park builds on other projects the charity has carried out in the adjacent New Hall Wood including footpath maintenance and woodland management aimed at improving the habitat of local bird life including the willow tit. Although the Steel Valley Project has a small core group of staff to oversee their project work it is volunteers who contribute their time each week that enables them to deliver such projects.

Following a dip in volunteer numbers during the pandemic the Steel Valley Project are now seeking new volunteers to join the team to enable them to deliver an exciting programme of new work in the year ahead. Still time for local business to claim

Sheffield City Council is encouraging all eligible businesses who have not yet applied for an Omicron Hospitality, Accommodation and Leisure Grant (OHLG) to do so by the new extended deadline of 11th March.

This is a one-off grant of up to £6,000 for businesses that offer in person services from their premises. It is available to rate payers and the amount of funding available will be based on the property's rateable value. The Council has also put in place a

matching scheme for non-rate paying businesses in the same sectors.

To be eligible, businesses must meet specific criteria set by Government which are available to view on the Council’s website.

Sheffield City Council was allocated £4.4m to award to Sheffield's eligible rate paying businesses in the target sectors. This is an estimate provided by Government but the final amount will be determined by the number of grants the Council is able to pay.

Businesses should submit their applications as soon as possible in case they are asked to provide further evidence to support their application.

Applications must be submitted to the Council no later than 11th March. Any applications received after this date will not be considered.

Cllr Paul Turpin, Executive Member for Inclusive Economy, Jobs and Skills, said: “Businesses have faced some enormous challenges throughout the past 18 months

and we are really keen to see as many eligible businesses as possible receive their grant worth up to £6,000.

“As with previous Covid grants for rate payers, we have no discretion over this funding so, should businesses not claim all the £4.4m, we have no option but to the return the balance to Government.”

Emergency funding for buses to end this month Mayor Dan Jarvis, MPs and local council leaders in South Yorkshire have accused the Prime Minister Boris Johnson of being asleep at the wheel, as government support to keep the region’s bus services running nears an end.

Emergency funding to maintain services during Covid-19 will end on 31 March. Local leaders gathered at Olive Grove Depot in Sheffield on Monday morning to highlight the impact this will have in South Yorkshire – and urged to PM to ‘wake up’ to the impending disaster.

A failure to continue support could mean 50% of buses running across South Yorkshire face being scaled back or cut completely. The Government has also halved the £3 billion funding available to its flagship Bus Back Better policy, a plan to level up bus services outside of London.

Mayor of South Yorkshire Dan Jarvis said: “The Prime Minister has a bad track record when it comes to keeping his promises and buses

– and he is asleep at the wheel as South Yorkshire’s services face disaster.

“Local leaders and I have invested millions to keep South Yorkshire moving and cut fares, while exploring every option to transform our network. This week, the MCA will consider whether to start a formal investigation of bus franchising.

“I’ve pressed operators to put passengers before profit and reconsider damaging cuts, but the Government’s failure to level up bus funding will fatally undermine our efforts to give South Yorkshire the bus service we need and deserve.”

I just wish that Dog owners would be responsible for picking up their dogs poop. It's getting out of hand now it's everywhere. Not only is it dangerous to children but also our dogs. The amount of dogs being ill with a bug they pick up when taking them for walks is dreadful. This isn't good for the dog and our pockets as we have to pay for vet bills.

Where the following guidance applies, HMRC’s suggest that you are probably self-employed if you: • run your business for yourself and take responsibility for its success or failure; • have several customers at the same time; • can decide how, where and when you do your work; • can hire other people at your own expense to help you or to do the work for you; • provide the main items of equipment to do your work; • are responsible for finishing any unsatisfactory work in your own time; • charge an agreed fixed price for your work; • sell goods or services to make a profit (including through websites or apps).

Barnsley College to host global film festival

Members of the public will have the opportunity to attend global hit, The Frontier Sapiens Film Festival, as part of Barnsley College’s Week of Culture on Tuesday 15 March.

Showcasing a selection of the best adventure, cultural and environmental films around the world, the Frontier Sapiens Film Festival, hosted at the College’s Electric Theatre, Falcon Street, hopes to draw attention to those whose voices aren’t being heard and celebrate those who are pushing boundaries or leaders in their field.

They have a drive to shine the spotlight on the captivating stories behind individuals working towards positive change in the world and the films they show have been described as captivating and thought-provoking as they inspire stories of human endeavour.

The A57 Snake Pass between Glossop and Ladybower Reservoir has been shut for three days since Storm Franklin triggered landslips on the hills above it.

It is expected to be closed for several weeks for repairs, and access is being maintained for local traffic only.

Cyclist Simon Warren, author of the Greatest Cycling Climbs books, Tweeted photos of himself alone on the pass with between Manchester and Sheffield with no vehicles in sight.

He wrote: "The Snake Pass is closed to traffic, will be for ages. Went over to Glossop and back this morning.

Bloody awesome. It now belongs to cyclists. Get out there before it opens again."

Derbyshire County Council said: "The A57 Snake Pass was closed on Monday February 21 following damage caused by torrential rain as Storm Eunice and then Storm Franklin battered the county.

"Inspectors found movement in three locations along a mile-long section of the road and a decision was made to close the road between Glossop and Ladybower Reservoir to protect road users. Visitor facilities at Fairholmes are unaffected and can be accessed via Sheffield.

"Two of the areas of slippage were already being monitored carefully following previous movement but a third, more serious slip, has now appeared along the road where the verge has dropped by 2 metres.

"Teams will continually monitor the situation but as the ground is still moving they are unable to come up with any final designs to repair the road until it has stabilised, which will be dependent on many factors including the weather.

"At this stage, a one-month closure is in place however it is too early to say when the road will be able to reopen following any necessary repairs due to the unstable nature of the ground.

Councillor Kewal Singh Athwal added: “I know this will be a huge inconvenience to everyone who uses the A57 regularly.

“However, with the ground underneath the road surface expected to continue to move, in the interests of everyone’s safety we simply cannot allow traffic to use the road.

“Once the land movement has stopped we will assess what needs doing to repair the sections of road.”

It's not known how long it will take the ground to stabilise before thorough assessments can be carried out.

Drivers are asked to follow the diversion route which is the A57, A6013, A6187, B6049, A623, A6, A6015, A624 and then back on to the A57.

Rail Betrayal Fares rise twice as fast as wages Louise Haigh MP for Sheffield Heeley has condemned Tory Ministers after a brutal 3.8% train fares hike was announced this morning (1 March).

Labour has compared the costs on over 180 train routes between when the Conservatives came to power and the projected new prices that will be implemented this January 2020.

And this new analysis shows for commuters in Sheffield, they will be paying £1,078 for a season ticket between Sheffield and Derby since the Tories came to power.

The average commuter nationwide faces paying a staggering £3,263 for their season ticket - £1069, or 49% more, than in 2010.

New figures released today by Labour show: • Average fares will rise to 48.9% more than they were in 2010.

• That some commuters will be paying over £3,900 more to travel to work than in 2010.

• Average fares have risen twice as fast as wages.

Louise Haigh MP, said: “This brutal Tory fare hike will be a nightmare for millions of passengers.

“Many families in Sheffield are already struggling to make ends meet and facing soaring taxes and bills will now be clobbered with an eyewatering rise in the cost of the commute. Rather than give them a helping hand the Tories have piled on more misery.

“The worst part is that the communities who will feel the brunt of years of broken promises, empty words and no action, are at the same time being squeezed by the Conservatives’ tax hikes and rising bills, as those with the broadest shoulders remain largely untouched.

“Many will wonder what planet Ministers are on if they think people can afford this? People up and down this country are paying the price for a crisis made in Downing Street.”

Goole AFC 0 PCFC 1 Church survived a late scare when Goole skied a chance, following a bad bobble, from 4 yards out. Church then saw the game out for the win.

A report by Martin Webb Penistone edged closer to the promotion places with a hard fought Premier Division win over Goole at The Victoria Pleasure Grounds.

Eccleshill United, who were in the top two teams, lost 2-1 here in Goole's previous home fixture.

A scrappy game ended with a share of the spoils with Jubilee Rangers twice pegging RBL back.

As we head into the second half of the 2021/22 season, we've seen strong crowd numbers across multiple teams throughout the Premier Sports Elite League.

This comes against a backdrop of missing an entire season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, teams in Scotland and Wales with limits on crowd numbers for much of December and January, and some 30 games cancelled with teams in protocol at the back end of 2021.

Sheffield Steelers have been leading the way this season and are on a huge run of 22,891 fans through the doors in just three games. They'll be trying to make it four straight home matches with over 7,000 fans when they take on Cardiff in the Challenge Cup Semi-Finals. The Steelers have gone over the 7,000 mark eight times already this season!

Legion took an early lead as Morgan Cowell volleyed from fully 30 yards in to the bottom corner.

After 10 minutes the sides were level with a well worked Jubilee goal down the left.

Legion thought they had regained the lead following an error from the goalkeeper, but the referee deemed the ball to be on the line. Jed Phillips was then bundled over in the area before shooting but Legions appeals were waved away.

Neither side could really get any fluidity going in the conditions, but Dave Millen showed great composure to hit a half volley from the edge of the area to make it 2-1.

With 10 minutes remaining Jubilee headed an equaliser direct from a corner to end the honours even, in a competitive game.

Dawn claims England vest Dawn Broom became the third member of Penistone Footpath Runners in recent years to qualify for an England masters vest over the 10k distance. Dawn finished third female over55 in the qualifying event at the Bourton on the Water 10k race at the weekend. Dawn will represent England at the Bristol 10k road race in September.

Rusty ‘Pigs’ off the pace Thirsk 59 -5 Stocksbridge

Back to play off action for Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby at the weekend, and despite some spirited resistance, the lack of recent game time caught up with the team, as they eventually capitulated to a disappointing 59pts to 5pts defeat away at highly fancied Thirsk Rugby.

Missing ‘clock tower’ Andy Beal due to work commitments, ‘Slammin’ Sam Whittaker made a welcome return after injury, but the stronger, faster home side, clearly in-form with games behind them scored three first half tries.

Stocksbridge replied when the hard-working back rower, Ricky Rowett made a break to find centre Ben Tyers, sponsored by Vouch, scorching up in support to cross the white wash, with Bowskill unable to convert, but it was to be Stocksbridge’s only consolation during a hard day at the office.

The second half followed a similar pattern, the visitors tried hard with Newton and that man Frith heavily involved, but it just wasn’t to be and the rustiness showed as Stocksbridge eventually succumbed to a heavy defeat.

Things got a bit feisty as Stocksbridge competed, and during a melee a home forward felled the ‘big rig’, Liam Roebuck with a cheap cowardly punch that

resulted in him receiving a red card, and there was still time for Jonathan Gill to receive a yellow card for his part in conceding too many break down penalties.

Despite the defeat, there were some positives for the visitors to enjoy, Adam Frith sponsored by Mr Brian Mills was the player of the day for a stirring performance, and February’s Clarach Builders Man of Steel award has been won by the consistent Reece ‘diesel’ Aspin, kindly sponsored

by Mr Mick Gribbins.

Stocksbridge face another tricky away fixture this week at York based Nestle Rowntree however, Director of Rugby, Andy Tyers is looking for a response, ‘there was plenty of rustiness as you would expect from a concerning lack of game time’, adding ‘the lads are in good spirits, and the cobwebs should be brushed off now, in preparation for a reaction next time out’.

Meanwhile the club are become frustrated by a lack of information or a decision on the outcome of the abandoned clash with York RI earlier this Year, and will be seeking some clarification.

The next home fixture is the return clash with Thirsk Rugby at Coal Pit Lane on Saturday 12th March with a 3pm kick off, where Stocksbridge will be hoping to show more resolve, particularly in defence.

The game was often bad tempered and that came to a natural conclusion when Luke Mangham was sent off for kicking out at a Pontefract defender. At the very end though, Ben Partridge robbed Lloyd Allinson of the ball 30-yards out before hitting a no-look shot which floated into the top corner to earn a stunning win for the Steels.

It would turn out to be a game of few chances as Stocksbridge struggled to get out of their own half at times. But despite that, the biggest chance of the first half went to the Steels.

A great cross from the right was headed goalwards by Kurtis Turner but Allinson was there to save it. The ball rebounded to Nathaniel Crofts but he couldn’t keep the shot on target and it went over.

The game had been fairly ill-tempered with plenty of clashes between players. Pontefract were working hard to surround the referee whenever possible and it was generally a rough and tumble game with lots of holding and nibbles at the feet. It felt like it was going to end badly for someone and eventually it did. Mangham had spent the game being held and it was just one too many for him when he lashed out and appeared to kick out at the Pontefract player. After consulting with the linesman, the referee had little choice but to show him a straight red.

This all led to some late drama, though. Michael Trench cleared the ball and it would go to Allinson who was 30 yards out of his goal.

Partridge went to close him down and at first, it seemed like the keeper got away with it.

However, the touch was enough for the striker to rob him of the ball. Partridge did have his back to goal and so had to just try a sighter with his turn and shot. Miraculously, the shot was perfect as it floated into the top corner, sending the Eco Power into delirium.

This didn’t mean the game was over though.

A shot from the edge of the box from Pontefract was excellently saved by Roxburgh before a corner kick scramble was blocked on the line on two occasions. After this, the full time whistle blew to confirm a stunning win for the Steels.

Manager Ian Richards said “The celebrations at the end best describe how hard-working and together the team and coaching staff are.”
