Liberty steel: winding up orders ‘devastating blow’ to workers and their families

IS THIS THE END FOR STEEL IN STOCKSBRIDGE? Around 700 jobs are under threat at ‘Stocksbridge Steelworks’

Steel has been produced in Stocksbridge since the 1850’s.

Winding up petitions have been issued against companies owned by metals tycoon Sanjeev Gupta.

MP Miriam Cates said

Court records revealed one of the firms included Speciality Steel UK Limited, a division of Liberty Steel, which employs about 2,000 people in England.

Three other firms, Liberty Pipes, Liberty Performance Steels and Liberty Merchant Bar, also had petitions against them.

Court documents show the companies owe HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) £26.3m.

“The news that HMRC is issuing winding up orders on Liberty Steel is very concerning for those working at Stocksbridge Speciality Steels, and for our entire community. Steel is a vital part of our local economy, and I'm determined to do all I can to secure its future.”

“In my conversation with the Steel Minister, Lee Rowley MP, I pressed for him to give assurances that, if Speciality Steels were to be forced into administration, the Government will step in to help find a buyer, ensure a smooth transition,

and enable the continuation of operations. This is particularly important for those working at sites like Stocksbridge and their families.”

swimming challenge Deepcar woman to raise money for Sheffield charity CAROL Foster is spending February tackling one of the biggest fitness challenges of all…an English Channel swim.

But she won’t have to worry about rough seas, shipping lanes or looking out for the French coast as she is completing the 22 miles in the safety of the pool at Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre!

Carol, who lives in Deepcar, is swimming at least 64 lengths per day, six days per week, throughout the month to raise money for St Luke’s Hospice, where friends David Shaw and Mark Allsopp were both patients.

“David and Mark spent their last days in St Luke’s, surrounded by their loving families so I decided I wanted to do something in recognition of the care they received,” said Carol.

“I originally put my name down for the Sheffield Half Marathon but my back isn’t very good so I had to drop out of that but I still wanted to raise some money.

“I’ve always been able to swim and got back into it last year and I suddenly realised I was getting up to a mile every time I went in the pool.

“A friend of mine jokingly said I should swim the channel so that’s what I am doing and I am really enjoying it.

“I must admit there are some mornings when I wonder if I can be bothered but once I am in the pool I am really focussed and I am determined to complete the challenge.

“I’ve set myself a target of £200 so hopefully I should be able to beat that.”

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone.

It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves A Stocksbridge man has conquered 95 summits in the Peak district, and believes he maybe the first person to complete since the challenge began.

A challenge was released back in April 2021 to walk to 95 summits, called ‘Ethels’ across the Peak district.

Dan, 39, undertook the Ethel challenge and it took him 7 months to reach his last summit ‘Kinder scout’ on Saturday 5 February.

The father of two started his first ascent on the 10th June 2021 up Snailsden Pike End. The logistics coordinator for John Crawshaw butcher’s in Stocksbridge, told Look Local “. I started the challenge believing I couldn't do it, that I'd never complete it but I needed to im-

prove my health, fitness and lose weight so believed it would at least help” Dan walked around 300 miles overall and thanked all the people who inspired him. “ My children inspired me to do it and thanks to everyone who has motivated me along the way.

Special mention to Adam Everson for his continued support and belief.”

Dan was lucky enough to see many beautiful parts of the peak district walking on varying terrain from tarmac footpaths, gritstone edge paths, boggy open moorland to scrambling up the top of a flowing waterfall on Grindsbrook Clough.

Visit the snowdrop flurries at Wentworth Woodhouse Known as the first flower of the year, the valiant little snowdrop is making a big impact at Rotherham’s hidden gem Wentworth Woodhouse once again.

Throughout February, snowdrop flurries form dainty carpets of white at every end and turn in the Grade I listed mansion’s private garden.

The flower symbolises winter nearing an end and hope for better times ahead. Five varieties - from the most common Galanthus Nivalis to the honey-scented Galanthus Atkinsii - stretch across several acres at the house being brought back to life by Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust.

They peep from woodland areas, surround the Punch Bowl near the South Terrace and line the avenue of beech trees leading to the mansion’s Baroque West Front.

The picturesque scenes are thanks to backbreaking toil each year by Head Gardner Scott Jamieson, his right-hand man Andy Smith and their two teams of local garden volunteers - the Tuesday Welly Wangers and the Wednesday Bramble Bashers.

Each year, once the time is right, they begin the back-breaking task of splitting and

transplanting thousands of snowdrop bulbs, ensuring the drifts are ever-bigger the following year.

Members of the charity ArtWorks South Yorkshire and local businesses involved in Corporate Responsibility Days play a huge part, too.

Said Scott: “Our drifts firmly place the gardens at Wentworth Woodhouse in any discerning gardener’s diary as a must-do visit and light the fuse for the kaleidoscope of colour arriving in the next few months from swathes of daffodils to our showy rhododendron and camellia collections.”

Wentworth Woodhouse gardens are open every Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm and on Tuesday February 15 and 22 (government COVID-19 guidelines permitting).

The house will be closed temporarily from February 15 to March 2.

Budding entrepreneurs hear from business expert Barnsley College’s iTrust students who are setting up their own businesses have had the chance to talk to John Lamerton, self-made millionaire, author and lifestyle business expert.

John’s virtual workshop was packed with hints, tips and expert information as he discussed lifestyle businesses and their benefits to College’s young entrepreneurs.

John shared his personal experience of setting up and managing several lifestyle businesses after becoming run down, stressed and unhappy in his 9-5 office job. He also explained the importance of working hard and showing commitment to a business model whilst not seeing success in yachts and supercars but instead in happiness and the ability to not wait until retirement to take a break and enjoy hard-earned money.

Insightful industry knowledge was also shared with the students, including how to compete in the business field on experience instead of price, build loyalty with customers and like-minded professionals, take every opportunity available and ensure not to be driven by numbers and the size of a corporation.

John said: “As a society, we have too often been trained and conditioned to believe business is designer clothing, huge skyscrapers and helicopters, when in fact business is the business owner delivering the lifestyle they want through a business that they have designed.

“The reason I think it’s so important to tell others about this is because I personally embarked on a path chasing money and the prestige lifestyle before realising it wasn’t delivering the lifestyle I wanted and I was unhappy.”

Barnsley College’s iTrust programme is an entrepreneurial initiative which allows students who are interested in setting up their own business to receive a wealth of support. This includes access to an array of information and guidance such as mentoring from industry specialists and local businesses representatives. The programme also offers the opportunity to receive a £250 grant to be invested in each student’s business.

Community fridge launch

Chapelgreen Community Hub Community Fridge has launched aiming to reduce food waste and bring the community together.

The first Community Fridge in Chapel Green Area was officially opened on Saturday 29th January by Chapelgreen Community Hub, supported by the environmental charity Hubbub, as part of a new partnership with Co-op to fast-track the expansion of Hubbub’s, Community Fridge Network across the UK. Angela Woodward from Chapelgreen Community Hub Community Fridge said: “We were very honoured that the Lord Mayor Councillor Gail Smith came to our launch to officially open Chapelgreen Community Hub Community Fridge and we were thrilled by the positive response we received from everyone who attended our launch.”

The Chapelgreen Community Hub Community Fridge, which is located at The Campus Café at High Green Development Trust, is one of 100 new community fridges that will be opened over the next year, which are expected to save 6.8 million meals per year from going to waste.

The food is donated by businesses – with Co-op donating surplus food from its stores.

As well as improving access to food, the fridges go beyond this by empowering communities to connect with each other, and learn new skills through activities such as cookery sessions and workshops on how to grow your own fruit and veg.

The Community Fridge will be open every Saturday from 11am to 1pm, to enable residents and local businesses to share surplus food and for anyone to help themselves to quality food that would otherwise be wasted.

The fridge will be run by Chapelgreen Community Hub, who aim to support and bring new initiatives to our area in the hope of bringing all the community together for the good of our community. The group will welcome donations of unopened, packaged foods within their use by date and raw fruit or vegetables, which will then be available to anyone in the commu-

nity to take. As well as reducing food waste, the group will use the fridge to strengthen community bonds.

The fridge is one of the five Community Fridges that have been launched in Sheffield.

The new fridge builds on the success of the existing 150 fridges in the Community Fridge Network, which redistribute on average of almost 6,000 meals per fridge each month.

Coop will also invest in the development of the Hubbub and the Community Fridge Network, to offer support to previously established fridges and other organisations that host community fridges.

Angela Woodward said: “Community Fridges are a wonderful concept and we’re delighted to host the first for Chapelgreen residents. All our visitors are welcome to get involved, whether by giving or receiving food or coming along to help us achieve our aspiration of reducing food wastage and developing the sharing skills of our community to imbed sustainable routines.”

Performing like there’s no tomorrow

SVBA YOUTH will perform "Like There's No Tomorrow" at Christ Church, Stocksbridge, next month.

Twelve young people age 11 to 19 tell the story of a young girl’s struggle to make her friends, family and community understand the consequences of ignoring the climate crisis. A funny, poignant play told by some amazing young actors.

The March 11th the show will be attended by Elvi Piper a National Theatre Director, who will feed back on the performance. One of the main things the NT wants

to see is theatre in the community so organisers Christ Church over those two nights. The NT Directors were bowled over when they came to see Marxist in Heaven in 2020 and gave the cast amazing feedback.

A group of local fundraiser's have decided to take on the coast to coast challenge to raise money for mental awareness.

The group have decided to ride over three days from Southport to Hornsea approx 210 miles.

“We don't have final numbers but I'd say there will be 10-15 of us who will be attempting the challenge.

As a group we have decided that one charity would be more beneficial than all of us fundraising for individual charities.

Community Group Musical Memories kick-start grants Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust are encouraging community groups within the Sheffield Lakeland area to apply now for a Community Grant as the fund is coming to an end this year.

The fund has proved overwhelmingly successful and has supported many environmental and heritage projects within the Sheffield Lakeland area, such as the restoration of the Tun Gate well and stone wash trough at Worrall.

So perhaps someone in authority can provide a sooner rather than later explanation (via such as Look Local perhaps?) as to why Stocksbridge Area Office is still closed to the public and when it is to re-open – if at all? And if it is to be shut down, then provide the grounds of justification being adhered to?

Squash make it Ladies running group offering 8 in a row a new Couch to 5k course Strideout was set up in Wisewood, Sheffield in 2011 to encourage non-runner women to give running a try and to support them from beginner to more established runners. The group has since expanded to various locations across the city and has developed a massive following.

The Strideout Stocksbridge branch, established in November 2018, has been steadily growing in numbers and run leaders, positively supporting runners through lockdown. They are able to offer further spaces to beginners in the local area, on their 8 week programme.

Run Leader Harriet Stevens explains ‘In 2021 we received funding from the Stocksbridge Town’s funds which has enabled us to part-pay for England athletic training for 3 new run leaders and has contributed towards the coaching qualification for 1 of our existing leaders. This means we have a really great team of knowledgeable run leaders. It has enabled us to consistently offer 3 runs every Monday night, (3, 4, 5 mile) and coaching sessions on a Wednesday evening, looking at running drills, intervals and other ways to improve running technique. We are a women only running group as we feel this provides a low pressure and friendly environment to help support new runners. In the future we would love to have younger girls join the group too, from 12 years old.’

Stocksbridge Squash had a busy week, with two matches in 6 days.

The first match was played at Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre against Sheffield Medics, a team from Sheffield University. Stocksbridge were dominant throughout, taking victory in all 4 matches without conceding a game, to win 16-0. The team was Ed Walker at 1, Alex TimminsJones at 2, Aaron Alcock at 3 and Mark Wingfield (C) at 4.

6 days later Stocksbridge travelled over to Fulwood Sports Club to take on the home team from ‘the posh end’. Alex couldn’t play this week which meant that Andrew Bailey made his debut for Stocksbridge playing at 4. Andrew played really well in his first match for a number of years to secure a point for the away team but ultimately lost his rubber 3-1.

Captain's Charity Donation Captains at Stocksbridge Golf Club name a charity that they want to raise money for. Alan Revill, the current Gents Captain, selected the Chesterman Unit at the Northern General Hospital as his chosen charity.

Alan had some very personal reasons for this, given that the Cardiology team at the Chesterman Unit saved his life in 2010, when he had heart bypass surgery after a heart attack. Since his life saving treatment Alan has been a regular volunteer on the unit, even through the Covid-19 pandemic.

So, it was an easy choice for Alan to make and over the past 12 months of his captaincy he has managed to raise £3200 to buy the Chesterman Unit two chair beds. Alan originally spoke to Staff Nurse Ruth OstrovskisWilkes to identify what his fund raising could buy for the Unit.

Lincoln took the lead when Benjamin Richards towered over everyone to head in. Luke Mangham equalised after getting onto the end of a Nathaniel Crofts cross before Mangham got another when he dispossessed the goalkeeper and then finished.

Lincoln would get one back through a Hayden Cann header before the lead was restored with a backheel finish by Mangham.

Stocksbridge went up by two when Kurtis Turner scored from close range though there was a nervy end to the game when Matthew Cotton scored a penalty kick. Steels would hold out for the win though.

That was another good win for us today against Knaresborough at the DSM, running out five-one winners in a game where we were competing with the elements as well as the opposition. We did that exceptionally well, particularly in the first half. We got early goals to put us in a two-nil lead.

Penistone runner Julia Johnson claimed first place in the ladies over55 category at the Muddy Boots 10k.

Julia was also fourth overall in the ladies category finishing in a time of 48-06.

Sarah Halstead completed the Liversedge half marathon in a time of 2-04-22 which gave her a top ten finish in the ladies over50 category.

Several Penistone runners were in action at various parkruns which are all 5 kilometres in distance.

Malcolm Rose broke the men’s over65 course record at the Frickley parkrun, Malcolm’s time of 21-30 also gave him third place overall.

Further afield, Dawn Broom was first lady at the Dorchester Great Field parkrun in a time of 21-47.

Youth James Fryers put in an impressive performance at the Monsal parkrun placing second overall and breaking the 18 minute barrier in a time of 17-50.
