Worrying dog virus 'spreading like wildfire' warn pet owners Dog owners in Sheffield have said that their pets have come down with the disease, writes Yorkshire Live.

Dog owners across Yorkshire are issuing warnings to others that their pets are coming down with an illness that they fear has spread from the Yorkshire Coast.

Last week Yorkshire became increasingly worried for its beloved pets as hundreds of dogs fell ill across the region and cases seem to be escalating further this week.

The illness was thought to be coming from the North Yorkshire coast after 150 dogs were reported to be sick after spending time on the beaches.

Pet owners were urged to avoid beaches such as Scarborough and Saltburn after Facebook posts shared from veterinary practices in the region expressed concerns over recent incidents.

Reports of dogs becoming ill with similar symptoms to those on the Yorkshire Coast have now began to come from inland.

Pet owners in the likes of Hebden Bridge, York and Sheffield have highlighted concerns that their dogs have come down with the illness and said that their vets have reported that this could be the case.

A dog owner from Sheffield posted saying that there was a "nasty bug doing the rounds that will knock your dog off its feet".

They added that the virus is "spreading like wildfire and is in most areas" and had caused her dog to vomit and have diarrhoea, which were similar symptoms to the virus reported from the coast.

Emily Storey, from York, warned others about the illness - which she said was "taking longer than normal to recover from" - after her six-month old cockapoo Loki became ill last week.

She said that she had taken him on walks around Copmanthorpe and discovered that other dogs in the area had fallen ill with a similar illness.

She said that he was also vomiting and had diarrhoea and that he was not eating properly. She also said that when she took him to the vets she was told that it "seems to be worse than usual".

But one of the vets at the Minster Veterinary Practice played down the idea that a new illness was affecting canines though, saying that she didn't think there was a new illness in York.

She said: "We often unfortunately get waves of unwell pets with vomiting and diarrhoea around this time of year, just as in the summer we often get cases of kennel cough. I did mention to a client at Willow Grove that I had seen a few cases of vomiting and diarrhoea, but this can be a normal occurrence this time of year.

"Any cases that have had to be hospitalised due to vomiting and diarrhoea have responded to supportive care. My main advice to any pet owners would be that if your pet is unwell then seek veterinary attention, if we have a mild stomach upset then a bland diet is little and often is a good idea.

"Please be reassured that if we felt that there was something pet owners should avoid or minimise to stop their pet becoming generally unwell then we would advise of this."

WOMAN, 26, DIES AFTER BEING FLUNG OFF BUCKCovid ING-BRONCO MECHANICAL BULL RIDE AND SUF- Memorials FERING A CARDIAC ARREST DURING NIGHT OUT planned AT RODEO-THEMED BAR IN SHEFFIELD The heartbroken mother of woman who died after falling from a mechanical bucking bronco on a night out has paid tribute to her 'beautiful and kind' daughter, writes The Daily Mail.

Jessica Lally, 26, died from a cardiac arrest after she fell from the mechanical bull at Bronco's Rodeo bar in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, last October.

Plans are in place to create a group of unique, long-lasting and creative memorials in Sheffield as a tribute to those who have died from Covid, those who have lost loved ones and those who have been affected by Covid.

Sheffield City Council said “Our city, like those around the world, has been deeply affected by the impact of Covid-19, and in Sheffield we want to pay a meaningful tribute to those who have lost their lives and the heroes that have shone in these difficult times.”

Her devastated mother Joan has now described the loss of her daughter, who had been planning to marry her partner later this year, as 'heartbreaking' and said 'sometimes we still fall into pieces'.

Three areas of memorial activity are being developed by community representatives and organisations from across the city to make the vision a reality.

1. A Memorial Archive will be created for Sheffielders to leave memories of loved ones.

Jessica's family have now launched a fundraising campaign for the installation of more lifesaving defibrillator equipment at public venues as this device could have saved Jessica's life had one been used sooner.

2.A unique Memorial Trail taking residents around Sheffield and finishing at a central memorial will be curated too.

3. A centralised memorial is planned for the city centre. How people interact with designing the local memorials will influence what the central memorial will look like. The location is being considered carefully and the group wants Sheffield’s communities to be involved in what any site should look like.

Joan said her daughter and her friends had been at the Bronco's Rodeo bar in Sheffield, when tragedy struck.

The ‘community fridge’ will be based at The Campus on Pack Horse Lane in High Green and is all set to open this Saturday 29th at 11am.

Project Coordinator Angela Woodward, said “Our Community Fridge is for every resident of the local community and our aim is to help reduce food wastage. You will be amazed and shocked at how much edible food goes to landfill on a daily basis. We want to try and tackle this issue.

Angela continues “Despite growing awareness of food waste, people and businesses lack easy ways to pass on food near its sell by date to others. We’ve partnered with The Hubbub Foundation and Coop to give the community an easy way to make use of food that is still perfectly edible. We are appealing to residents of Chapelgreen community to help us to reduce this scandalous and meaningless waste of food. It is there for everyone and free to use.”

After a very successful pre launch event in December the fridge will open from this week (29th January), every Saturday 11am 1pm. The event is organised by social enterprise Peak Running in partnership with the Peak District National Park Foundation.

The Birthday Bash is being held to celebrate the Peak District’s 70th anniversary as the UK’s first national park, while also supporting and promoting the work of the Foundation.

Peak Running is one of the Foundation’s Peak Partners and all proceeds from the event will support conservation and engagement projects in the National Park.

Peak Running founder Andy Brooks says: “The full 70k route is a spectacular tour of some of the best scenery the Peak District has to offer. With around 2600 metres (8500ft) of elevation gain, it is a challenging route but the multitude of breath-taking views make the effort worthwhile.

“The half distance of 35k covers the first half of the longer route but, with over 1300 metres (4000ft) of elevation gain, it is still a challenge that will gain you kudos.”

He adds: “We originally hoped to stage the Birthday Bash in early summer 2021, but it was pushed back due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The new date of 9th April means the event can still happen within the Peak District’s 70th anniversary year, which runs from 17th April 2021 to 16th April 2022.

Our runners care passionately about the areas they enjoy and this is our way of making sure we all explore, enjoy and support our National Park to ensure it continues to be a place where we can connect to nature and do our bit to restore the natural world too.”

Both routes begin in Castleton and take in the Great Ridge, Lord’s Seat, Hayfield – the gathering point for the 1932 Mass Trespass – Kinder Scout, Jacob’s Ladder and Edale.

Half distance participants will return to Castleton via the Great Ridge while those tackling the full 70k will continue via Hope Cross, Win Hill, Bamford, Stanage Edge, Hathersage and lesser known trails towards Bradwell and back to Castleton.

Foundation fundraising manager Sarah Slowther said: “We’re delighted to be working with Peak Running on this event. A 70k loop showcasing the very best of our varied National Park landscapes is the perfect way to celebrate the Park’s 70th anniversary while raising funds for the future. Our natural world has never been more important for wildlife, wellbeing and climate and the proceeds from this event will support a range of nature recovery projects - including tree planting and moorland restoration - plus projects like Ambassador schools, which connect young people to nature.”

Prices for entry are £50 for the 70k route and £35 for the 35k route. Entries will close at midnight on Sunday 27th March.

“For many of our patients, home is where they want to be cared for as it provides familiarity, comfort and reassurance.

“Our care reaches people across the city, allowing us to give specialist palliative and end of life care to people in their own homes.

“The difference our community care makes can be anything from helping with pain relief and stabilising medications to delivering tailored food parcels and helping patients to build their strength and

feel as well as possible, to help them enjoy precious time with family and friends.

“All of our care and support is without charge to those who need it but with government funding covering just 25 per cent of our running costs, we rely on sponsorship money from events like the Home Run to help us raise the remaining £7 million needed each year.”

The aim is that runners will plot their own routes, set their own schedules - following all current government Coronavirus social distancing guidelines - and have completed the challenge by the end of February.

THREE ARRESTED AFTER HORRIFIC CRASH Three people were arrested and are now under investigation for driving whilst over the prescribed limit through alcohol.

Your Roads Policing Team were travelling to Sheffield along the Dearne Valley Parkway to a report of a vehicle just having been stolen by means of a burglary.

The team on their way came across the accident in the photo which had not yet been ‘called-in’ Fortunately the injuries were relatively minor, but it could have been so much worse.

This has then led to a lengthy investigation, once the health of the occupants had been sorted.

A public consultation has launched to seek views on plans to transform buses The ambitious proposals - part of a future roadmap to improve bus ticketing, routes and frequency in the region - include free travel for under 18s and capped fares for all passengers, bus priority measures to make journeys quicker, better journey planning information, ‘turn up and go’ bus options, and zero emission buses to make travel cleaner and greener towards a net-zero future.

National Bus Strategy (Bus Back Better), which includes a pledge of £3 billion of national funding to encourage local bus use.

Outdoor City ready to celebrate the arrival of spring

This March the Outdoor City’s annual Festival of the Outdoors returns, celebrating the arrival of spring and all the benefits the season brings to getting outdoors and being part of what Sheffield has to offer across its 61% greenspace.

Headline events this year are Sheffield Adventure Film Festival (ShAFF - 19/20 March), The Climbing Works International Festival (19/20 March), Pollen Market special (20 March) and the Run for All Sheffield Half Marathon (27 March).

The festival encourages people to get involved in their great outdoors – whether it’s spectating, taking part, supporting their community or just taking more of an interest in being active and outside.

Whether people want to watch some of the best new adventure films; catch a glimpse of worldleading climbers taking on boulder challenges set by Percy Bishton (who was the route setter for the Tokyo Olympics), soak in the atmosphere at Castlegate

A lack of adequate insurance for Buxton RUFC meant that the scheduled warm up match with Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby was replaced at the last minute with a club training session. Whilst the club wait to see if these issues have been resolved in time for the corresponding away fixture to take place this coming weekend, the Yorkshire Four Premier play off fixtures have finally been released. Stocksbridge Rugby will begin their campaign with a home clash against either Leeds Mods or York RI depending on results this weekend, this will be on 29th January with a 2.15pm kick off. There are three further home fixtures on 19th Feb V’s Leeds Medics & Dentists, 12th March V’s Thirsk Rugby & 26th March when Nestle Rowntree are the final visitors to Coal Pit Lane. Stocksbridge have qualified for the premier play offs on the back of a strong end to 2021 however, they will need to replicate this form if they are to mount a serious promotion challenge. ‘it’s well within our

Cook vows to enjoy Tigers switch NEW Sheffield signing Craig Cook is hoping Tigers fans get to see the best of him this year.

The former British Champion admits he had a tough time in 2021 coming back to the sport after a year off but has vowed to enjoy his racing at Owlerton.

Cook was a shock signing when the club unveiled their side last month and there is no doubt on his day he is capable of beating the very best.

And he admits a lack of pressure from manager Simon Stead has him relishing the prospect of linking up with the Tru Plant Tigers.

With Jack Holder and Adam Ellis occupying the top two spots in the team, Cook goes under the radar instead of carrying the responsibility of captain and number one as he has done previously.

He said: “Steady’s a great guy and I’m looking forward to riding for him.

He was a good rider, very fast around Sheffield.

“He told me to come along and enjoy myself, no pressure, just go out there and enjoy it and that’s what I intend to do.

“Riding as a second string will take a bit of pressure off me. Hopefully I

can just go there and enjoy my racing. Coming in on a six-point average, there’s no reason why I can’t put two points on that.

“The main thing I want to achieve is to get back to the rider I was. There’s no pressure on me next season.

“I am fully focused on UK racing.

I’m not racing for Great Britain or any other commitments. I don’t have to worry about losing weight or anything else. I can go there and love my racing again. If I can do that, that’s when I’m at my best.”

Boss Stead is pleased to have a rider of Cook’s quality on board.

“Nobody can argue with Craig’s ability, we know what he can do,” said Stead. “My job is to work with him and help him enjoy himself riding at Sheffield where we’ve seen him have some cracking meetings.

“He’s not our number one and I want him to just go out there and do his thing without any weight of expectation from myself, the promoters or the fans. I’m sure he can prove to be a good signing.”

Women power into next round

Oughtibridge stormed into the 4th round of the County Cup with a fantastic result at fellow Regional Premier side Wakefield.

Millie Kenyon opened the scoring with a super strike for a 1-0 half time lead but there were concerns for long serving defender Abigail Towms who had to go off with a nasty looking knee injury.

Straight after the break it was game on as the hosts drew level but within 10 minutes Kenyon put Oughtibridge back in front and it was quickly 3-1 as she completed her hat trick.

The goals started flying in as Emily Fowler made it 4-1 before Kenyon grabbed another for 5-1.
