‘Captain’ Tobias youngest ever to be HONOURED

New Year Honours: 'Captain Tobias', 11, from Sheffield receives BEM A Sheffield fundraiser has said he was "chuffed to bits" after finding out he was the youngest person ever to feature in the New Year Honours.

Tobias Weller, 11, from Sheffield, who has cerebral palsy and autism, is to receive the British Empire Medal (BEM).

He was nicknamed "Captain" after he was inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore to raise money during pandemic lockdowns.

"Captain Tobias" said he cannot wait for a chance to meet the Queen at a royal garden party.

Football Club raises over £1000 for food bank Stocksbridge Park Steels football club has raised over £1200 and countless boxes of food for Stocksbridge Food Bank as part of their Food Bank Drive Day. The festive fixture against Sheffield FC was designated as a Food Bank Drive game with fans asked to bring what they can to help Stocksbridge Food Bank in what is often a tough time for many families.

A season record crowd of 551 attended the match and while they would have been left disappointed as the match was abandoned after 75 minutes due to fog, the club were delighted to raise £1078 as well as too many of boxes of food to count for the Stocksbridge Food Bank. As well as fans, Liberty Speciality Steel and members

of The South Yorkshire Ability Counts League also donated food for the cause.

Stocksbridge Park Steels vice chairman Roger Gissing said: “We are delighted to raise over £1200 as well as a large number of boxes of food for the Stocksbridge Food Bank.

“We’d like to thank our fans as well as Liberty Speciality Steel and The South Yorkshire Ability Counts League for their generosity with our appeal.

“It was fantastic to see so many people at the Eco Power Environmental Stadium supporting this cause and everyone at the club for doing their part to make sure we raised this much money and food for the Stocksbridge Food Bank.”

A new dementia friendly cafe will open soon in Hillsborough

Call for action to ensure more use of UK steel in HS2 project Union leaders have accused the Government of failing to ensure UK steel is used in the HS2 rail project, writes David Kessen for the Sheffield Star.

The claim follows parliamentary questions over measures the Department for Transport has taken to use British steel.

A number of steel manufacturers are based in Sheffield and Rotherham.

The union Unite, which represents thousands of steelworkers, says HS2 is the largest construction project in Europe and will need millions of tonnes of steel, but wants more done to ensure British steel is used.

Located in the old coach house that was originally part of the Hillsborough Hall estate (now Hillsborough Library), the new cafe was made made possible by a national lottery grant to Age UK worth over £500,000.

The building, which is over 200 years old, has been used for storage

by Sheffield City Council over the years but recently has been largely unused and has fallen into disrepair. The building was granted listed status in 1973, meaning the building can not be demolished without good reason.

The cafe is scheduled to open in early 2022.

We envisage that in the Bowling Pavilion we will have a mixture of performing arts activities (eg. singing, dancing, theatre) and physical activities (eg. yoga, pilates, chairbased exercise).

We envisage that the Bradbury Makers Shed (formerly known as the Potting Shed) will be home to a wide range of creative arts activities, from gardening to photography, from woodwork to storytelling.

We will also need support from people who are interested in "meet and greet" or basic maintenance/ caretaking roles.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “The government must immediately develop clear targets on UK steel usage on publicly funded construction projects. In the case of HS2, UK producers should have a paramount place in producing steel for the project. Surely that is economic common sense?”

Unite says this is a particularly critical time for the UK steel industry with order books not being full and the rising energy costs in danger of making UK steel uneconomic to produce.

Unite national officer for steel Harish Patel said: “Steel is a key foundation industry and it is absolutely essential that it receives practical support from the government. That should

start with ensuring that government funded projects always purchase UK steel whenever possible.

“It brings into question yet again whether the government is really serious about levelling up or if it is simply a soundbite.”

Mr Stephenson said: “HS2 Ltd and the Department for Transport are committed to working with the UK steel industry to ensure it is engaged, informed and prepared to seize the contract opportunities that will be generated by HS2.”

Unite claims UK steel producers have raised concerns that they that there is little or no effective effort being made to ensure that the contractors who are engaged to build HS2, buy UK steel, resulting in much being bought from overseas.

A Department for Transport spokesperson said: “HS2 is a once-in-a-generation investment in the UK’s transport infrastructure and we expect it to have a lasting impact on jobs, skills and businesses here in the UK. “The Government and HS2 Ltd have engaged extensively with the British steel industry over the last five years to ensure that it is in the best possible position to compete for contracts.”

Voices From The Peak presents new video: Snow!

A seasonal new video titled Snow! featuring a montage of rarely seen photographs of past winters in Derbyshire’s Peak District has been launched online today (30 December, 2021).

The video brings together old photographs of deep snowfalls, roads blocked with snow drifts and more, along with archive recordings of voices and stories of people who lived through those times, as well as voices from today.

The audio-visual journey through winter wonderlands has been created by poet and recording artist Mark Gwynne Jones and sound producer Paul Hopkinson, with Alex Ivanov and Anna Kerr. The work features pictures courtesy of Picture the Past and the music of PsychicBread, Ashley Hutchings, Esther Swift, and Hannah James singing the Castleton Carol.

Mark Gwynne Jones says: “I’m excited to release the video of Snow! I hope people will enjoy this seasonal combination of old photographs, archived recordings and modern voices – it’s fascinating to look back at pictures of some of the harsh winters we experienced back in the 1960s and 70s before the days of double-glazed windows and central heating.”

The video is free to watch on the Peak District National Park’s website www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/ voicesfromthepeak from Thursday December 30.

Footballer finds hockey club find a new home King's Lynn Town star Ross Barrows helps Sheffield hockey club find a new home, writes Steve Jones for the Sheffield Star.

A Sheffield hockey club left without a home ground in its seventieth anniversary year has a new facility for its youngsters thanks to a professional footballer.

Chapeltown Hockey Club, which was formed in 1951 and boasts around 100 members across its junior and senior age groups, has been forced to play matches on the other side of the city or in Barnsley in recent years after their pitches at Ecclesfield School were relaid using a 3G surface that ironically is better suited to football.

But a chance conversation between longserving player of 29 years, Rachel Gillott, and Sheffield-based Ross Barrows, who plays for National League side King’s Lynn Town, resulted in the latter recommending the multiuse-sports area at the Caribbean Sports Club as a possible solution.

Ross’ dad Errol is involved in the running of the facility and, after positive discussions, Chapeltown Hockey Club were able to raise the £12,500 needed to refurbish the playing surface there, thanks largely to a £9,500 grant from Ecclesfield Parish Council.

A marathon effort from junior lead coach Matt Bradshaw helped them get over the line after he raised more than £2,000 by running a 26.2-mile route around hockey pitches in South Yorkshire.

The new pitches, which will house the club’s junior section, were officially opened by Team GB Hockey star Tom Sorsby, who is a former junior player at the club, on Monday, with 24year-old defender Ross also present.

There were over 1000 nominations across the group from staff and residents and their families. Yet again it was clear how much families appreciated the efforts of staff to keep their loved ones safe and how much the team in the care home had supported each other throughout the pandemic.

The awards go to staff who have gone above and beyond to exemplify the family values at the heart of each Country Court home. The Board of Directors review all of the nominations and select three winners for each care home in the Country Court Group.

Although Derek will be standing down as MD with his beloved Stannington, he will remain with the band as a player and looks forward to working with whoever will be appointed as his successor.

Derek’s last official engagement will be in January at the Butlins Competition. Derek will still be available (time permitting) to help out other bands if needed, as well as adjudication duties.

After over 30 years directing brass bands, Derek Renshaw has decided to retire from full time conducting.

During this period, Derek led several bands to podium places at band competitions, in particular three Yorkshire Area First Section titles and two National Titles with Unite the Union band as well as second place behind Brighouse and Rastrick in the Yorkshire Championship Section, qualifying for the National Finals at The Royal Albert Hall and Yorkshire Area Second Section win and National title with Stannington Band.

He began playing the cornet at the age of 10 and during his playing career, he played with many brass bands including: City of Sheffield Youth, Yorkshire Youth, Sheffield Recreation, Quaker Sutherland, Andrews Heat for Hire, Grimethorpe Colliery, Rockingham Colliery, Yorkshire Imperial Metals & Black Dyke Mills as well as ‘guesting’ for most of the top bands. Featured on many recordings both here and abroad as well as radio and TV. He was a founder member of Harlequin Brass and The Brass Players.

In his long career he has directed such bands as Oughtibridge, Holme Silver, Dodworth Colliery, City of Sheffield, Unite the Union, Yorkshire Imperial and Stannington.

He is an extremely successful MD, particularly when it comes to com-

petitions having numerous prizes under his belt including 4 Yorkshire Championship Titles and a Hat Trick of National Championship Titles.

In more recent years, Derek joined the Association of Brass Band Adjudicators (AoBBA) presiding over many competitions including The Manx Musical Festival, The Midlands Area Competition, The South of England Championships, to name a few.

Derek continues to work with his beloved Stannington Band and will take them to the Butlin’s Championships in January – his last contest with them as MD. Band Chairman, Phil Attrill paid tribute to Derek, saying “Stannington Brass Band want to express their huge thanks to Derek for all the success he has brought the band over many years. The band achieved its best accolades under his direction, achieving the Yorkshire Area Second Section and the National Finals in Second Section double in 2016, qualifying for the First Section National Finals and securing promotion to the Championship in previous years. None of this could have been achieved without Derek's commitment and dedication to the band. We are thrilled Derek is staying with the band as a playing member, and will bring invaluable quality to the cornet section”.

College to host free event for those not in education employment or training Barnsley College is hosting an event on Thursday 6 January 2022, 11.00am-2.00pm for those aged 16-18 and not currently in education, employment, or training to find out about the range of courses available and to build a personalised study programme.

At this free event, the College’s friendly and helpful team will create attendees a personalised study programme that allows them to gain skills in a range of subject areas.

Whether it’s a mix of art, sport, digital and fashion; or construction, catering, games design and music; or anything in between, attendees can try the courses they want to learn more about and gain the skills that allow them to progress onto higher-level study or an apprenticeship.

For those who prefer a more hands-on approach to learning, then an apprenticeship could be the perfect choice. Apprenticeships allow students to earn a wage whilst gaining industryspecific knowledge and skills by working alongside experienced members of staff within their chosen sector. Barnsley College

offers over 75 apprenticeship programmes from Level 2 to 6 in industries such as Beauty Therapy, Leadership and Management, Sport, Childcare and Education Professions and Warehousing and Logistics.

A ‘New You’ for 2022

January is famous for New Year’s resolutions. There’s something so motivating about pressing the ‘reset’ button and starting a new year with a fresh set of goals – a brand-new year for a brand-new you. And this year that feeling’s likely to be stronger than ever, as we emerge from the worst of the pandemic.

For many of us, becoming slimmer, fitter and healthier will be at the top of the list of our New Year’s resolutions for 2022. Spending so much time indoors, often coupled with more indulgent food choices and disrupted routines, saw many healthy habits fall by the wayside during the pandemic – and then Christmas rounded it off! And let’s not forget, getting into great shape is the very best thing that we can do for our long-term health.

If you’re ready to make 2022 the year that you take control, lose weight, get fitter and gain confidence, read on. Here are seven secrets of success – all backed up by the latest research into weight loss and behaviour change, from local weight loss expert Lesley Haywood from Slimming World.

1 Don’t go hungry To lose weight you have to eat less, right? Well, no! What you’re eating is much more important than how much. Swapping high calorie, unsatisfying foods (think chocolate, alcohol, pastries) for foods that are lower in calories and more bulky, so they fill you up for longer, is key to losing weight in a way that’s easy to live with. Research shows that by basing your

diet on low energy dense foods, like fruit and veg, and foods that are most filling like lean meat, fish, eggs, pasta and potatoes, you can actually eat a larger amount of food and feel more satisfied while losing weight.

“We might think we need to be overly strict with ourselves when we’re losing weight – counting and measuring all our food and reducing portion sizes right down – but this type of restrictive approach ultimately leaves us feeling more hungry and deprived,” says Dr Jacquie Lavin, Slimming World’s Head of Research.

Some quick and easy changes include using less fat when you cook, so you boil or dry fry instead of frying in oil, swapping full fat dairy products for low fat or fat free and adding more fruit and veg to your daily meals.

‘My members find that by making simple changes to their shopping and cooking, which we talk about in our group every week, they lose weight without feeling hungry,’ says Slimming World Consultant Lesley.

If it’s your goal to get fitter, remember you don’t have to become a professional athlete to get active - just making a commitment to moving more all adds up.

Finding an enjoyable, achievable, and sustainable way of building new active habits into your routine is key – anything that gets you moving more, from heavy gardening or vigorous housework to brisk walking, dancing, cycling, or playing frisbee in the park, counts. What’s most important is making it a regular habit – as natural to your day as brushing your teeth. Lesley says: ‘In our local groups we encourage each other to get more active, and we’ve got a new set of 50 online videos for members so they can easily get started at home.’

3 Be kind to yourself

We all start January with great intentions, but it’s all too easy to go off track. It’s what you do next that matters most – and the most important thing is not to beat yourself up about 2 It’s OK to walk before you run! it. A Slimming World survey of 1,700 slimmers showed that when they did have a slip up, being self critical was more likely to lead to comfort eating and giving up completely, whereas when they were kinder to themselves (imagine how you’d talk to a friend who’s had a setback), they more quickly got back to healthy eating, lost weight and they kept it off.

So, cut yourself some slack!

It’s hard to achieve a goal if you don’t set it out clearly in the first place! And when you’re thinking about your dream weight, don’t be afraid to be ambitious. Research from Slimming World shows that slimmers who set ambitious targets lose twice as much weight as those who try to be ‘realistic’. Shoot for the moon – you never know where you might land! Lesley says: ‘As well as setting an overall weight loss target, all my members set a mini goal every week – whether it’s to lose weight, to get more active, to plan ahead or to try something new – making that commitment to a goal definitely helps them achieve more.’

5 Don’t opt for a quick fix It’s no secret that many people find losing weight far easier than keeping it off longterm. To avoid becoming trapped in a yo-yo diet cycle, it’s important to approach weight loss as a permanent change to your lifestyle – and focus on developing new healthy habits that are sustainable for life, as well as getting support to make those changes. Dr Jacquie Lavin, Slimming World’s Head of Research, says: ‘A group support approach is tried and tested - research shows that the more groups Slimming World members attend, the more successful they are. Based on their weight-loss over a year, the top 10,000 slimmers who attended their weekly weight-loss group regularly lost 30% of their body weight

– around 5st each. In our groups, members are equipped with all the tools they need to stay slim for life, so that they can be confident that the changes they’re making are sustainable forever.’

6 Strike a balance An all-or-nothing approach is rarely effective when it comes to weight loss. Restricting yourself when it comes to food and drink might work in the short-term, but pretty soon you’ll be fed up, hungry and giving up completely. A little bit of what you fancy is key!

That might be a Saturday night glass of wine or a bit of chocolate in the evenings. Whatever it is for you, having a flexible approach and a balanced mindset is much more likely to deliver long-term success.

7 You don’t have to go it alone The principles of losing weight are quite simple, yet if it was that easy – we’d all be doing it!

Studies show that embarking on your weight loss journey alongside other slimmers brings more success than going it alone – sharing the ups and down, having cheerleaders who are on your side, and sharing advice and tips.

And not only that - recent research revealed that people who are supported to lose weight in a group increase their mental toughness – developing more control, embracing challenges and growing in confidence -- more than those who choose to lose weight on their own - and go on to lose more weight than those who don’t have the support of a Slimming World group. The first half was a cagey affair with both teams struggling to create clear cut chances.

Kurtis Turner was able to break through but the Ammers did good work to stop being able to get onto his favoured right foot and in the end, he was forced to hit it with his left.

That ended up being a strong shot that went just wide. At the other end, Adam Priestley was a constant nuisance by stealing the ball in areas he had no right to. He did this to Hall on one occasion and he followed it up by curling the shot while the goalkeeper was in no man’s land. This curling shot would end up over.

The game did need something to break it open and unfortunately for the visitors, that special something came for Yorkshire. After some pressure from Stocksbridge, they broke and Duggan was able to break the offside trap.

He went clear and he duly finished when he went one-on-one with Hall. Stocksbridge did almost fire back right after this when Nodder hit the post but it did mean the Ammers had the lead going into first half.

Stocksbridge manager Ian Richards would have torn up his plans for the second half within a few minutes. Good passing from Yorkshire created an opportunity for Duggan who hit a powerful shot that left Hall with little chance of saving it.

Yorkshire looked more likely to get the next goal but sometimes a bit of luck is all you need to turn the game on its head. Hall’s clearance went over everyone and Nodder was alive to the ball and knocked it down into the box.

He was pushed over and a penalty was given.

Mangham stepped up but Max Culverhouse was equal to it as Mangham tried to slot it into the bottom corner.

Thankfully, the Steels did get the goal. It was from direct play again as Nodder latched onto a ball before he was able to turn and find the ball into the bottom corner. With that strike, the momentum was with the away side.

There would soon be another boost for Stocksbridge. Jordan Lemon and Stephen Crawford both went for the ball but the Steels full-back was left on the floor in agony. The referee judged it to be a stamp on Lemon and would send Crawford off for the offence.

Stocksbridge would press and despite some close calls, they just couldn’t get that crucial goal. The closest was from a late corner which caused chaos in the box and included Liam McFadyen having a shot which was blocked close to the line. But the Ammers were professional and were able to close the game out.

Second was Penistone runner Richard Cottam in a time of 55-59.

The race took place on a rainy and very windy morning between Christmas and New Year. Starting on a Wednesday morning for the first time, the day nor the conditions did not deter the 251 runners who started.

Damian Kilpin (Wormstones fell race)

On New Year’s eve several Penistone runners headed to Glossop for the Wormstones fell race which is just under 5 miles in distance and involves over 1,200 feet of climbing.

First back and in the top ten finishers was Richard Cottam who was eighth in 38-26. First lady back for Penistone was Becky Timms in 91st place in a time of 52-27. Bernice Nixon claimed second place in the ladies over60 age category whilst Damian Kilpin was just outside the top three in the competitive men’s over40 age category finishing in fourth. Sarah Walch completed the Hardmoors 30 which is a 30ish miles loop from Whitby, including Robin Hoods Bay, Ravenscar, and Cloughton. Sarah was sixth lady back in 6-41-17.

The course is well marked and had over 30 marshals, who must receive enormous thanks for standing in the wind and rain for up to 2 hours.

The Ambles Revenge is the winter race of The Amble which is run in summer. A mixture of cross country and fell, the race goes in a clockwise direction, starting on the Trans Pennine Trail at Oxspring.

Local Penistone winners were over50 man Shaun Dimelow, over70 man Bill Philips and over80 man Ray Brown. Suzanne McGill was the ladies over40 winner and Barabara Haigh was first over80 lady.

It proceeds for 8 country miles over farmer’s fields, quiet country lanes over many stiles towards Green Moor and back to Oxspring. The weather meant that there were large parts that were muddy and very wet underfoot but everyone who ran says it was great fun. Undulating and hilly it is certainly not an easy race.

Ian Sutcliffe (East Hangingfield Trail Marathon)

In Cockermouth Nichola McNally had a successful race finishing third lady in the North Lakes New Year half marathon. Nichola also claimed first place in the ladies over50 category in 1-39-29.

Keightley treble inspires win in front of bumper crowd Penistone Church 3-1 Emley AFC

A report by Martin Webb The rain arrived just before kick-off to welcome Emley and Church to this first match of the year. The teams were separated by 9 points at the start of game played on a very soft pitch.

Better was to come before the break when Keightley completed his hattrick on the stroke of half-time .The forward broke free after the defender missed a cross-field ball. He again beat the keeper low to his left. His well taken hat-trick separated the 2 sides at half time.

A bumper record beating crowd of 825 saw an entertaining match with four goals and many other near misses.

Goal 22 minutes

A great advert for non-league decided by a first half hat trick for Nathan Keightley. The frame of the goals also took a pounding with Emley hitting the post and the bar and Church hitting the bar. This win moves Church up to 5th in the NCELP.

Church opened the scoring when Emley lost the ball in midfield. Nathan Keightley worked the ball across to the right of goal. He shot low across goal scoring from 15 yards to the left of the goal.

However wihin 6 minutes Emley were level after they sprung the offside trap and James Eyles ran in on goal finishing low to the right.

Many of the 825 crowd stayed on to clap the players from the pitch and then to fill the club house.

Church nudged ahead just before halftime when Nathan Keightley took a difficult ball down and moved to the right edge of the box. He scored confidently to the left of the goal.

wasn’t a “patch-work” it was a side we put together from our excellent squad.

Everyone deserves at some point to be pushing for their shirt and that’s what today was about really a few different players in different positions. We had a couple of new lads in Tom Deighton and Alfie Broughton and we were able to get them minutes in the game.

We stuck to our tasks, it was a second half where we had to dig in, show heart and desire. Emley threw a lot at us and we threw a lot of bodies in the way to get the three points we deserved.
