Cousins represent SY fire cadets in London Remembrance

Teenage cousins Noah Kitchen and Owen Marsh, were chosen by their Watch Manager Fleur Holland (pictured together) to represent South Yorkshire Fire Cadets in this Years Remembrance Parade in London.

Noah and Owen have been Fire Cadets since they were both 12 and are based at Stocksbridge Fire Station which is part of South Yorkshire Fire Cadets.

Owen commented, “The Remembrance Service is hugely important to us as a family, our grandfathers fought in the 2nd World War and every year we attend the service locally and pay our respects to those who gave their lives so this was really special for both of us”.

The teenagers were chosen for their dedication to cadets, their continued weekly attendance via zoom during lockdown, voluntary work via the cadet service and for undertaking a B-Tech Level 2 in Fire and Rescue Services in the Community alongside their GCSE studies.

Noah told Look Local, “We are so proud to have been asked to represent South Yorkshire, it was a huge honour for both of us to stand with the veterans and their families and a day we will remember with pride”.

Noah is 16 and still and in his final year at Stocksbridge High School and Owen, also 16 is studying Health and Social Care at Chapeltown Academy.

Both boys are working towards careers in the Emergency Services.

NORTH SHEFFIELD REMEMBERS The communities of North Sheffield were once again out in force, on Remembrance Sunday, after a year’s absence, to honour those who have fallen in past wars.

‘Lest we forget’

Stocksbridge and Penistone both saw processions/parades walk through the town centres with hundreds in attendance from young to old.

Hundreds also gathered in Chapeltown park, including local MP Miriam Cates and local police.

Cllr Stephen Bennett, on behalf of Bradfield Parish Council attended Stannington's Remembrance Day service to lay a wreath and to hand over a new Standard purchased by the Parish Council for the Stannington British Legion to mark 100 years of the British Legion.

The parade was very well attended, despite the poor weather.

Remembrance events were not held in 2020 due to government coronavirus restrictions.

Pupils help design Little Library boxes

SHEFFIELD REFUSE WORKERS’ STRIKE SUSPENDED AFTER NEW PAY OFFER TABLED BY VEOLIA

Pupils at Windmill Hill Primary school in Chapeltown have helped to design Little Library boxes for their community.

The two Little libraries – one outside the school on Ash View and one in the Community gardens in the centre of Chapeltown – are a way for children in the school and wider community to share good things to read.

Head of Reading at Windmill Hill, Sarah Reynolds said, “The boxes are for ALL children, not just children from Windmill Hill. All of us can help by keeping the collections stocked with good reading material for kids.”

This is just one of the school’s many initiatives to encourage the youngest members of society to get reading.

“We are passionate about reading at Windmill Hill,” explained Head of School, Simon Plant. “We know that there will be children in our community who do not have books of their own at home.

The feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with many parents saying what a good idea it is and many children bringing their old books to share in the boxes. Chapeltown in Bloom were happy to help fix the second Little Library box in the community gardens, an oasis of peace, which children of all ages often visit and enjoy. The box there has already been admired and talked about on social media by people in the community.

The Little Libraries are in place now for children of all ages to give a book to or take a book from and enjoy.

Strike action was scheduled to take place on 15 November - with indefinite strike action from 22 November.

Industrial action will now be suspended so members can be balloted on a new pay deal put forward by the company.

Members will vote on whether to accept a two-year deal which will see a 3% increase for year one, and a one-off payment of £250 (gross) for each employee and a further 3.5% for year two.

The McKenzie playground in Burncross has been brought back to life with a bright and colourful repaint. Burncross Action Team are delighted that local children will have a playground to be proud of, thanks to a successful grant application by the group to members of Ecclesfield Parish Council and the painting expertise of our supporters, Chris and Ben Peat. Two new pieces of equipment will also be added in the New Year, making the playground a fun place for our younger residents.

Redbrik in the Community Redbrik’s North West Sheffield Area Manager, Claire Shipman, visited Wharncliffe Side Primary School in Sheffield on Thursday 4th November to deliver a presentation advising young people about the dangers of building sites and how construction areas are not playgrounds.

Children from Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 were invited to the interactive assembly which demonstrated the risks involved with construction, including the dangers of machinery such as diggers which are often made into children’s toys.

Volunteers from the group assisted Claire in modelling the protective equipment needed on a building site to their classmates, plus why it is important to wear PPE correctly.

Located just north of Oughtibridge, Wharncliffe Side Primary School is only a few minutes from the brand-new Sky House Co. development of three and fourbedroom eco-friendly homes at Oughtibridge Mill.

With this new development of three and four-bedroom properties currently under construction only a short distance away, among many new sites coming soon to

the region, the importance of site safety cannot be overstated.

Claire told Look Local: “Visiting Wharncliffe Side Primary School was a fantastic experience for both myself and the young people. It was brilliant to see all of the learners really engaging with the assembly and asking lots of questions about what we do at Redbrik.

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone.

Local businesses in Sheffield are to benefit from £865,000 investment in high streets Sheffield City Council has announced further projects which will be supported by its Economic Recovery Fund, an innovative and unique grant set up to support businesses following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Christmas Tree Festival in St Mark’s Church Open to all local organisations and businesses to enter a Christmas Tree to showcase what they do, who may not be able to enter a tree outside any premises – or would just prefer to be inside. The festival will take place from 4th – 5th December.

Christmas Tree Festival programmes and refreshments can be bought from either St Mark’s Church, the Reading Room on School Lane and the Scout and Guide HQ on Saltbox Lane. The Scout nut is also running a weekend-long Christmas

Fair with stalls, refreshments, and the chance to visit Father Christmas.

To end the celebrations on Sunday 19th December there will be a candle-lit carol singing and results ceremony.

Chris Levesley explains: “Last year we had to run a Christmas Tree Trail because of social distancing and we were blown away with how many people can and took part in it. This year we are running it again but with the added bonus of having our traditional Christmas tree festival inside St Mark’s Church. There is so much happening in Grenoside – that is the only place to be this year to get in the festive spirit.”

Medical Centre Re the anonymous letter about a medical centre in last weeks Look Local. Much of the same can be said about the practice I go to. Should the writer wish to take the matter further I suggest they get in touch with Health Watch, Sheffield. They will no doubt inform you to get in touch with the General Medical Council. It would be interesting to know what the situation is at other practices in the area.

The Transport Select Committee recently produced a damning report and recommends that SMART motorways should be suspended and the hard shoulder should be reinstated. Breakdown companies are not able to carry out rescues and repairs as it would be lethal to send their drivers to a live lane.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents produced a Factsheet in January of this year which included: “However, there is concern that this type of Smart Motorway is not as safe as earlier designs because the emergency refuges are much further apart (as much as 1.5 miles apart), meaning that some drivers who break down may be forced to stop in a running lane because they cannot reach the emergency refuge. ”The House of Commons Transport Select Committee raised concerns about all lane running in its report, stating “we do not support All Lane Running as the attendant safety risks have not been fully addressed.”

The report said that “The type of scheme used on the M42 has a track record of safety and performance” and went on to say the “permanent removal of the hard shoulder is a dramatic shift from previous smart motorway schemes” and “it is the model of the M42 pilot that should be considered as the basis of future schemes rather than a permanent conversion of the hard shoulder into a running lane resulting in an ever-decreasing frequency of emergency refuge areas, and newly introduced hazards impeding emergency and recovery service access to incidents.

I have written to our MP about this matter. Claire Mercer is an ordinary person who is doing a marvellous job of keeping this campaign alive and we should do all we can to support her in her quest to make supposedly SMART motorways safer for all of us.

beacon arts to The Magic of Christmas start Festive starts at The Beginning festive season in stocksbridge

Steel Valley Beacon are getting Christmas Friday 10th and Saturday 11th December. off to a jolly start with a Christmas Show to The evening will include two short ‘radio plays’ based on local incidents, a comic ‘nabe held at Stocksbridge Rugby Club on tivity’, Beacon Juniors performing a short play, some solo items and finishing with a singalong led by Waldershelf Choir (Friday) and Thurgoland Community Choir (Saturday). There will be a licensed bar.

For Sheffield Cathedral there’s no better place to start Christmas celebrations than at The Beginning, the Cathedral’s Christmas lights spectacular which returns to Sheffield this year for six nights. The Beginning opens on Tuesday 30 November and runs through to Sunday 5 December.

Tickets (£6) are limited to 100 per night so it is advised to book early by phoning 0114 438 9521 or through any Beacon member.

The Beacon has now obtained the licence to perform The Sound of Music in June 2022.

Anyone who would like to take part should attend the first group audition on 18th November at Christ Church at 7 pm, if possible, and contact manyja@hotmail.co.uk if they would like to audition for a named role. Those auditions are to be held on Nov 20th & 21st at Christ Church.

In December 2019 the Cathedral hosted its first ever light show ‘The Angels are Coming’.

The event was a huge success with nearly 12,000 children, adults and families enjoying the show. “'The Angels are Coming' was evocative, spine-tingling and just wonderful. And to have the rest of the building lit only

by candlelight was inspired. I don't think I have ever seen the Cathedral look so beautiful” one visitor said.

After this sensational debut the Cathedral’s light show comes back after being postponed last year because of the COVID pandemic. This year visitors will be captivated by awe inspiring illuminations projected across the exterior facade of the Cathedral which will include the telling of the Nativity story.

Then come inside and be entranced by an immersive multisensory experience with music and lights inspired by the cathedral’s stained-glass windows and enjoy more than 30 beautifully decorated Christmas trees.

“The celebration of the birth of Christ signifies new hope.” says The Reverend Canon Keith Farrow, Vice Dean and Canon Missioner of Sheffield Cathedral. “The Beginning represents this in so many ways. It is the beginning of Advent and the anticipation of Christmas at the Cathedral and we want to share the hope and joy of the Christmas story with everyone.

Sheffield Cathedral is once again collaborating with awardwinning Luxmuralis to bring ‘The Beginning’ to Sheffield.

Win for Squash team

Stocksbridge squash earned their first win from the second game of the season with a comprehensive win over Sheffield Medics by 16 points to 1.

Captain Mark Wingfield and Aaron Alcock started strongly by both winning their matches 3-0, with Alex Timmins-Jones repeating that feat at number 2.

A debut was handed to new number 1 player, Ed Walker, who did superbly to secure the win, with a 3-1 victory over Sheffield Medics number 1, ensuring maximum points for the away side. It’s early days but this victory moves Stocksbridge up to 2nd position in the table.

Stocksbridge Squash hold an open night on Thursday 7pm to 9pm at Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre and new players are always welcome, it’s £3 for members and £4 for non-members.

Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby travelled to face Mosborough RUFC at the weekend, & they put up a spirited performance, before a series of mistakes proved their undoing, ultimately condemning them to a disappointing 47 pts to 7 pts defeat.

This result, although harsh, just about extinguishes any hope the Stocksbridge team had of a promotion push, & they will most likely take their place in the Plate play off ’s scheduled for the New Year.

With a number of the 1st team squad unavailable or injured, Stocksbridge had just 3 players on the bench, & all were needed.

The versatile Pete Newton formed a new centre partnership with skipper RolesMiddlehurst whilst Jonny Gill partnered clock tower Beal in the engine room.

Penistone runners were in the prizes as many of them placed in the top three positions in a variety of races. On the fells Sarah Walch and Helen Wright claimed 2nd and 3rd in the ladies over40 category at the Shepherd’s Skyline which takes in Stoodley Pike on route. At the Billericay Striders 10k Ian Sutcliffe produced a personal best time for the distance of 40-59, it also gave Ian 3rd place in the men’s over60 category. At the Wingerworth Wobble Sarah Halstead had a good run to claim second in the ladies over50 age category. At the Pavilion Gardens 5k David Napier finished just outside the top 3 for his age category with a fourth place in the men’s over45.

Mosborough play on a big, wide pitch, but the visitors had the best of the opening exchanges, taking the lead when Reece ‘diesel’ Aspin finished off good work from the forwards to plunge over for a rare try from close range for the opening score, Aspin is kindly sponsored by Mr M Gribbins.

Jack Spencer, who had an accomplished game at fly half, slotted the conversion to extend the lead. A series of defensive errors gave Mosborough good attacking ball, with an overlap & they out flanked the visitors to equalise, this was compounded on the stroke of half time when Stocksbridge won a very kickable penalty & instead opted to kick for touch, the ball was lost & Mosborough again sped down field to take the lead they were never going to give up.

Half time Mosborough 14pts – Stocksbridge Rugby 7pts.

Despite being the better side, & dominating the set piece Stocksbridge just couldn’t find the final pass, although Gill muscled his way over, only to be denied a score by the Referee.

Stocksbridge conceded a weak try just after half time, when a failed touch kick was gathered & Mosborough again outf lanked Stocksbridge despite some great tackling from the outside backs.

Worse was to follow when exciting full back Dan Burt injured an ankle & was replaced by the veteran Scotty Bowskill, skipper Adam Roles-Middlehurst succumbed to a shoulder sprain & was replaced by young flyer Matt Wilson.

Mosborough ran in more tries, against the disrupted visitors to give the final score line Mosborough RUFC 47 pts – Stocksbridge Rugby 7 pts.

In the build up to the final try, one of the home forwards fell awkwardly, sadly leaving him with a broken ankle.

Although Stocksbridge played with effort & character throughout, they will

need to erase these unforced basic errors if they are to earn their just rewards. Young Jack ‘milky’ Martin earned the Man of the Match award for a gutsy display, with Beal, Newton & Jack Spencer all producing quality performances.

A disappointed Director of Rugby, Andy Tyers said afterwards ‘ I can’t fault the effort of the boys, we simply ran out of numbers after dominating the 1st half ‘ , adding ‘ we need to work on our game management & decision making to get us through tough games like these.’ Stocksbridge Rugby are due to entertain Stanley Rodillians this weekend, but this fixture is now in doubt due to ‘Rods’ apparently pulling out of the league.

Golf: Winter Cup Round 6 Results The Gents Winter Cup Round 6 was completed at Stocksbridge Golf Club on 13 November. A good-sized field took part and the scoring was consistently good on a mild weathered day. 3 points separated the top 10 players, with another 6 just one point further adrift. Ian Hulbert (12) won the round with 39 points, a round that was very steady with 11 pars and but for a 7 on the 7th would have been even better. Brian Dobb (17) and Phil Beaumont (23) both finished with 38 points,

but Brian took second place on countback.

It's early days with the Winter Cup, but Phil Beaumont is in a strong position having scored well in every round to date.

Earlier in the week, the Dragons Section competed in the latest round of the Seniors Winter Cup. Mick Siddall (17) was the overall winner across the two divisions with 38 points. Sandy Murphy (13) matched Mick's score of 38 points, but lost out on countback

to Mick. Steven Haigh (14) and Alf Pearson (28) were both one point behind, but Steven took third place overall on countback. Alf at least had the pleasure of the leading scorer in Division 2 of the competition.

The Gents competed for a mid-week, front 9-hole stableford off mixed tees. Craig Brailsford (8) won with a great score of 23 points, his 9 holes including two birdies on the 4th and 9th. Alec Cowling (9) finished second

with 22 points, the same score as Ashley Jowitt (7), but Alec took second on countback.

Finally, the Gents competed for a Pro's Prize on 14 November, with Trevor Mosely (10) winning with 37 points. Liam O'Sullivan (4) and Mick Hulbert (12) both finished with 36 points, Liam taking second place on countback.

Steels denied late point Stocksbridge PS 1-2 Frickley

Stocksbridge Park Steels came close but were not able to pull off a spirited comeback in a 2-1 loss to rivals Frickley Athletic.

In front of the best crowd of the season for Stocksbridge, Frickley took the early lead through a break finished off by Nyle Blake.

They doubled the lead just after the start of the second half thanks to a Piteu Crouz stunner.

What became frustrating for Stocksbridge was that they would get a lot of the ball for the first half but not be able to do anything with it. They would regularly have over 60% possession but the Frickley defence was well organised and stood firm to stop any obvious opportunities. One long spell of possession where Stocksbridge tried to find a breakthrough ended with Kurtis Turner hitting well over.

Last time out, the Steels got off to a great start.

This time, it was the opposite. Not long after showing his threat by turning and shooting just wide, Blake burst through the Steels defence, evaded some challenges before firing past Ed Hall for the early Frickley lead.

Stocksbridge got one back through a poacher’s finish by Luke Mangham but were not Frickley had a game plan to work on the able to get that vital equaliser. counter attack. It worked on their first goal and it almost worked for a second. Kegan Everington robbed Lee Cooksey of the ball and got all the space in the world to run at goal. Eventually he took his shot but it was at the near post and Hall saved it.

Stocksbridge did have a few half chances to get level. Josh Nodder surprisingly crossed a free kick in rather than having a shot and it almost paid off. Reece Fielding’s header however was right at Jordan Peirrepoint. Ross Goodison rose well to meet the end of a lofted cross as well but that would go wide.

The Steels did almost get one right before half time though. From their own counter attack, they played some very good football to finally break through and create an opportunity. It fell to Luke Mangham who unfortunately volleyed over, meaning Stocksbridge were one down at the break.

Frickley came out firing looking for a second goal in the second half. The visitors would make this pressure pay. Crouz cut in and curled the ball into the top corner in a goal

In the end, it was the former Frickley man who got Stocksbridge back into this. It was a fantastic ball into the box for Mangham to head towards goal. That initial header was saved but Peirrepoint didn’t hold onto it and Mangham showed his fox in the box tendencies by getting onto the rebound and smashing it in.

With a goal in their pockets, Stocksbridge looked to get the goal that’d grab an unlikely point. A whipped in free kick was volleyed wide from a narrow angle by Joe Lumsden while a turn and shot by Nodder had the pace and power but not the direction needed to take it into the back of the net.

Controversy blighted the end of the game.

Kurtis Turner took a shot from distance and it was well saved by Peirrepoint. Jack Tinker latched onto it and finished, sending the home fans into delirium and making a hero out of the new signing. However, the linesman ruled for offside and it was chalked off, much to the anger of the home fans and anyone of a Stocksbridge persuasion. This ruling meant there wouldn’t be any points for Stocksbridge in this match.

Stocksbridge needed to do something to get back into this game. Joe Lumsden was brought on for extra firepower and some chances did follow. Mangham’s flick-on header was close to a goal with Nodder trying to race onto it while Scott Ruthven looked to catch out the keeper by taking an early shot though that ended up wide.
