ANNOUNCEMENT LIKELY IN BUDGET AT THE END OF THE MONTH Stocksbridge to Sheffield City Centre in eleven minutes. That’s the plan.

Don Valley Railway, the campaign organisation aiming to bring passenger trains on the freight line to Stocksbridge understand that an announcement regarding the potential development of a full business case review will be made on 27th October as part of the Government’s Spending Review.

This will include funding for the Rail Development Plan which includes schemes being developed as part of the Restoring Your Railway initiative to which a bid has been submitted by South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority for trains to Stocksbridge.

The proposal, much delayed because of the Pandemic was originally submitted in March 2020 before re-submission the following year.

Now supporters of the scheme eagerly await its conclusions.

Proposals could see the re-opening of the former Victoria Station along with possible stops at Wadsley Bridge, Oughtibridge and Deepcar. Don Valley Railway representatives will be attending consultations on the Towns Fund in Stocksbridge on 16th and 23rd October and be available for information.

The Department for Transport has launched a £500 million Restoring Your Railway Fund back in late 2019. MPs, local councils and community groups across England and Wales were invited to propose how they could use

funding to reinstate axed local services and restore stations.

The funding will be split in 3 ways to offer support to projects at different phases of development: Miriam Cates MP for Stocksbridge and Penistone sponsored the bid which is widely supported across the area, specifying the train services sought.

Funding has already been secured to bring back services on the Barrow Hill Line and this too may utilise the currently redundant Victoria Station adding capacity to Sheffield rail network and it may be possible to run cross-city services from the Upper Don Valley across to the eastern side of Sheffield.

Churn makes return as scholars go green University returns to churns for greener milk, writes the BBC. A university is ditching plastic milk bottles and returning to traditional churns in an effort to cut waste in its cafes and bars.

The University of Sheffield's three busiest cafes will switch to the 22-pint stainless vessels instead of single-use plastic containers.

It's estimated the change will avoid the use of 27,000 plastic bottles each year.

Local dairy farm Our Cow Molly will wash and refill the churns.

If successful, the trial project could be expanded to all the university's cafes, said a spokesperson.

This would mean that 87,000 plastic bottles,

which contain the 430,000 pints of milk used annually in campus cafes, could be saved.

The switch to the churns, which are connected to special pumps for dispensing the milk, could cut the carbon footprint of the deliveries by 6.5 tonnes a year, the university added.

Our Cow Molly's Eddie Andrew said the first prototype, which he demonstrated about two years ago, used an old churn and a beer hand pull to demonstrate the idea.

Peter Anstess, head of retail at the university, said it had a responsibility to source "high quality, local and sustainable" products.

Songs for mental health A Local musician has released his songs, written and produced during covid to help mental health charity, Mind.

Dave Fox, a regular guitarist with Sheffield/Barnsley rock band Seventh Son, spent time-out during last year’s COVID pandemic, like most bands.

In the meantime the guitarist took the opportunity to complete a project that he had wanted to do for some years.

Dave explains “I have a home studio that I record and produce the band with - so, having this much time on my hands, and the equipment at my disposal, I decided to record some ideas that I had knocking about.

The result was about 20 songs, 4 of which appear on a new EP under the name ‘Unwanted Guest’.

Mental health is something that both my wife and myself have had to deal with, on and off, for most of our lives so this was the obvious charity to work with. It was my chance to give a little back, if only in a small way.”

There is also a collaboration with local poet Jo Fearon, who wrote some great lyrics for one of the songs called ‘Future Not Fear’.

Award for charity founder Stocksbridgebased charity founder receives prestigious national recognition

Stocksbridge-based Iain said: “I was stunned to be recognised in this category amongst such outstanding finalists. I am very proud of what has been achieved with EmPHasis-10, and the part it plays in helping people with pulmonary hypertension enjoy a better quality of life.”

The Stocksbridge-based founder of a rare disease charity has been highly commended in his category of a prestigious national nursing awards.

Dr Iain Armstrong, chair of the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA UK) in Chapeltown, was recognised in the ‘Innovations in your Specialty’ category of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Nursing Awards.

The virtual ceremony took place on Tuesday and was hosted by TV presenter Kate Garraway.

Iain, who also works as a nurse consultant at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, was praised for his work in creating ‘EmPHasis10’ - a clinical tool that measures quality of life for people with the rare disease pulmonary hypertension.

Designed as a simple questionnaire 11 years ago, it is now used around the world to help doctors and nurses understand how patients

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a rare disease caused by the thickening and stiffening of the blood vessels supplying the lungs.

The reduced blood flow makes it harder for the right side of the heart to pump blood through the arteries, which can result in heart failure.

The main symptom of PH is breathlessness, with fatigue, dizziness and chest pain common too. The condition is thought to affect just 8,000 people in the UK. Chris Morley, Chief Nurse at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This commendation is richly deserved by Iain, and is a fantastic recognition of his work and his dedication to improving the quality of life for people with pulmonary hypertension.”

Iain co-founded the Pulmonary Hypertension Association 21 years ago to support those living with the life-limiting disease, and the charity now has over 4,500 members.

Heart of community TRAXX Market in Chapeltown is a small community market run as a not for profit entity by Chapelgreen Community Enterprise.

The market was started during the COVID pandemic, giving valuable opportunities for small local businesses to trade during what was a really rough and uncertain time.

The weekly Saturday market continues to thrive with around 30 stalls selling fresh fruit and veg, bread, baked goods, cheese, gifts, clothing and homeware to name a few as well as providing street food and drinks to visitors.

They also have plans to offer freebies to kids during their Christmas Markets starting on 27th and 28th November and each Saturday in December leading up to Christmas.

Grandad Brian inspires Katy’s challenge KATY Allan has already completed the first 5k of her St Luke’s Night Strider walk, accompanied by just baby daughter Emilia and dog Dexter.

But the second half of the fundraising challenge will see her joined by friends, all keen to help her raise money in memory of grandad Brian Hamilton, who was a St Luke’s patient before his death in August.

Night Strider is the popular St Luke’s Hospice charity spectacular, now in its seventh year, that sees supporters heading off on either a 10k or walking half marathon challenge.

In 2020 the event went virtual for the first time as supporters did their own lockdown walks, following Covid-19 guidelines.

And it’s safety first this year too as participants are again encouraged to choose their own 10k or half

marathon route throughout the month of October.

Katy has already completed the first 5k by taking baby Emilia and family pet Dexter for walks in woodland near their Dinnington home.

Katy set herself a target of £100 but has already smashed that by reaching £294, with the aim at seeing that total rise even further when the whole team start walking.

But the second leg of the challenge on October 23 will see her joined by friends as they set out from the Pangolin graft beer shop in Hillsborough to walk up to Loxley and back.

“The only thing that made our grandfather’s loss remotely bearable was how comfortable his final days were and how well cared for he was by the whole team at St Lukes,” said Katy, whose sister Emma used to work at St Luke’s.

“From domestics to doctors, we owe the whole team so much gratitude - they all played a part.

“I also spent many happy times at the hospice visiting my grandad

“St Luke’s holds a very special place in my heart but I was shocked to learn that they only get 25 per cent NHS funding and so the bulk of their revenue is reliant on donations.

“I’m hoping people will donate whatever they can, big or small, to help support the St Luke’s team as they continue their work with the people of Sheffield.

“One of the last things grandad said to me was how well he had been looked after by St Lukes and how he wanted to donate them some money so now I want to do him proud.

Fox Valley Voices was founded as a chamber choir in September 2014 by Daniel with around ten members. There are now 17 members, and the choir has developed a wide repertoire that embraces five hundred years of music.

The Carols by Candlelight event will include a delicious three course dinner with carols throughout the evening, tickets are available now and are £50 each including a welcome drink.

Restaurant Manager Argys Myrtja: “We are so pleased to be able to bring our fantastic diary of events back to Ponti’s and the response from customers has been wonderful. Carols

by Candlelight really feels like the start of Christmas and we are delighted to be working with Fox Valley Voices on this lovely event once again for 2021.”

While the additional £250m is welcome, it must be easy for practices to access rapidly and they must not be forced to have to produce reams of plans or try to meet unattainable targets to get it - which has often happened in the past.

Responding to the publication by the Department of Health and NHS England and NHS Improvement, outlining their plans to improve access for NHS patients and support for GPs. After weeks of promising an ‘emergency package’ to rescue general practice, we’re hugely dismayed that whilst additional funding has been promised, the package as a whole offers very little and shows a Government completely out of touch with the scale of the crisis on the ground.

GPs and their teams will now be facing the worst winter for decades, and as a result, patients’ care will suffer. Appointments will be harder to book, waiting times will get longer, more of the profession could leave and GPs will struggle to cope.

“It is also disappointing to see that there is no end in sight to the preoccupation with face-to-face appointments; we need a more intelligent conversation about the variety of appointments and care that are available to patients to meet their needs.

While in-person consultations are a key feature of general practice and absolutely necessary for some patients and certain conditions, the pandemic has proven that in many other cases phone or video appointments are entirely appropriate and appreciated by patients, and a crude focus on percentages or targets is completely unhelpful.

Throughout our discussions with ministers and NHS England in recent weeks, the BMA has been clear that without a concerted effort to reduce bureaucracy, admin and red tape in practices, patient access and care was at risk.

Unfortunately, today’s offer merely tinkers around the edges, and will not reduce the unnecessary burden practices carry and therefore free up any more time for doctors to see more patients. We need an end to targetdriven, payment-by-results care and allow practices to look after patients in a way that is flexible and right for the person in front of them and the Government have missed an opportunity to tackle this.

We had four simple asks – and only one appears to have been fully answered. Increased sentencing for assaulting healthcare workers is something we asked for, but meaningless if the same Government refuses to address the crisis fuelling such abuse. The Secretary of State has started to address a second, by talking more positively about general practice but he needs to do much more to publicly support the profession when we are under such pressure and facing a torrent of abuse on a daily basis.

These proposals will only confirm the profession’s belief that ministers and NHS England fail to understand the dire state of general practice – or that they, not hardworking GPs, are to blame. It’s truly frightening that we have a government so ignorant to the needs of such a core part of the NHS. GPs want to improve the care we offer to our patients, but today’s offer will not enable us to do that as we had hoped “GPs across England will be truly horrified that this is being presented as a lifeline to general practice, when in reality it could sink the ship all together. There can be no doubt that this lack of action at such a critical time will force many GPs to hang up their stethoscopes and leave the profession for the last time.

I notice that Starmer is now portraying himself as the next PM, implying that the Labour Party is a capable of winning the next election. But given the pre-Corbyn legacy bequeathed by previous leaderships, 40 out of 41 hitherto safe Labour Scottish seats lost, together with Corbyn era losses born of Brexit stance, how is this to happen?

Scots voters motivated by upset at being taken for granted and their objections to domestic free market programs, globalisation and illegal wars ignored, for example, voted en masse for the SNP and more Old Labourtype policies. South of the border, Labour members registered their umbrage against such, by voting en masse for Corbyn as leader and did so again with an increased majority in a forced re-run despite determined anti-democratic attempts to undermine his chances.

Starmer now seeks to blame Corbyn and his ilk for the inevitable 2019 election defeat as a means of furthering his own nebulous policy agenda, whilst championing a return to Blairism that sowed the seeds of the current discontent; which will only serve to alienate him and his supporters even more from the left of the Party and most “red wall” voters he will need to attract to stand any chance of recovering seats lost and then some to gain a working majority.

Given the steep uphill task confronting a seemingly irreconcilably divided Labour Party devoid of wider public appeal, then, whither effective opposition, a credible alternative government and a voice for the down trodden in future I wonder. Have the Tories now become the “natural party of government” to which there is no convincing alternative?

College teams up with business to offer apprenticeships Barnsley College has brought together three local businesses to bring more apprenticeship opportunities to young people in Barnsley through the apprenticeship levy.

The collaboration between Masonite, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of internal and exterior doors and College partners of the Masonite Academy; civil engineering firm CRS; and T3 Training and Development; has resulted in the transfer of excess apprenticeship levy funds from Masonite to CRS. This has enabled CRS to provide additional apprenticeship opportunities for two apprentices who will conduct their apprenticeship with T3 Training and Development and Barnsley College.

The apprenticeship levy is a fund designed to help companies offer more apprenticeships.

The levy is a tax payable by all UK employers with an annual pay bill of more than £3million. Employers can then access the fund to help pay for their apprenticeship training costs. Any unused funds in an employer’s levy account will expire after 24 months but up to 25% can be transferred to other employers to help provide additional apprenticeship opportunities.

Barnsley College was approached by T3 Training and Development, a partner training provider with the College, to see if any of their other partners had scope to help CRS.

The College then put all three businesses in touch, resulting in the collaboration.

Helen Weatherston, Director of Business Development at Barnsley College, said: “Barnsley College works with local, regional, and national businesses to understand the skills students need to progress and help support the local economy.

“This was a great opportunity to support employers and build relationships in the wider community to provide more apprenticeships and to help young people to get the relevant skills and training to help them achieve their careers.”

PAY VICTORY FOR CLEANERS Hundreds of cleaners 'who joined Unite to organise and fight for better pay' have won their campaign for an hourly wage of £10 an hour at the University of Sheffield.

Unite regional officer, Harriet Eisner said: “Sheffield University listened and was moved by the cleaners' effective campaign. Unite negotiated with management to boost the pay of the lowest paid workers at the University to £10 an hour. The outcome sends a message of hope to other low-paid workers. Getting organised into a union is the best way to improve your job, pay and conditions.”

The University's management signed an agreement with Unite representatives today (Tuesday 19 October) to confirm the decision to increase the workers' pay from £9.52 to £10 an hour. The campaign was backed by the University's students, by local Labour

MPs and the Sheffield Socialist Party. Over 14,000 people signed a petition calling for a £10 hourly wage.

The cleaners who are directly employed by the University of Sheffield have been organising themselves since March 2021. There are more than 350 cleaners employed by the University.

Unite Branch secretary, Chris Rawlinson said: “This is a huge victory for cleaners at the University who joined Unite to organise and fight for better pay. We are delighted that the University has recognised the hard work and dedication of our key workers by promising a £10 minimum wage from November 1st. We hope that this win will inspire cleaners across Sheffield to organise and demand a fair wage from other employers in the city.”

and a competitor, JP, in the Amsterdam Marathon. We also had social runners in Holmfirth and Essex (our Southern Branch).

Top 10 finish at British fell relay champs Penistone fielded two teams at the British Fell Relay championships held at Howgills Fells in the Lake District. The relay took part over four legs with the 2nd and 3rd legs being run in pairs.

In the Open Mens category Penistone claimed 44th place out of 82 teams.

The team was made up of Hugh Mackie (leg 1), Damian Kilpin and Richard Mackie (leg 2), Richard Cottam and Phil Hinchliffe (leg 3) and James Fryers (leg 4). Hugh Mackie had a particularly strong run finishing in 14th position after leg 1 against some of the top fell runners in the country.

Six junior athletes represented Penistone at the first fixture of the EIS South Yorkshire Indoor league. Church got a deserved equaliser right on the stroke of half-time. Church cleared a Goole corner and a great ball from Jordan Coduri found Tom Charlesworth on the right. Tom scored with a wonder strike across the keeper from edge of the box into the left of the goal.

pressure on towards the end if this match.

A beautiful move through four Church players from one end to the other ended with a good save from the Goole goalie.

A lovely Goole move drew a fantastic save from Chris Snaith, diving to his left.

Church were spending most of their time in the Goole half, but each chance went begging.

Bradley Kemp cross at the near post cross was met by Luke Stewart who headed narrowly wide with the last chance of the match.

A hardworking performance from both teams kept the crowd of 303 entertained. Church had chance upon chance to win but just could not get the ball into the net.

Cycling round-up Last Saturday Wheeler Paul Heggie travelled over to Middlewich to ride in the second of three Manchester & District 10 mile Open Time Trials. He finished in 26m 45s placing 31st of 38 riders and 5th of 8 in his age group. If he hadn’t lost valuable seconds behind two slow cars in the last two miles he would have beaten his own age record set last week. The last of the three events is next Saturday on the same course.

Golf: Winter cup The second round of the Gents Winter Cup took place on 16 October and as with the first week was a closely fought event. Mick Bellamy (22) and Craig Brailsford (17), both had the top score of 39 points, but Mick took first place with a better back 9 total. Martin Bye (10) and Lewis Perry (26) also shared the next best score of 37 points, with Martin taking third place on countback. Andrew Finney (0) had the best gross score of the day with 68, that included 4 birdies, but that was still only enough to get him 34 points in the competition.

CHURCH HELD AT HOME A bright and breezy day saw Church on a perfect pitch to draw with Goole.

A competitive match with plenty of action at both ends that Church could have, and probably should have, won.

The point at home moves them to 14th in table and further away from the bottom 6.

Runners in the mixed team were Julie Darigala (leg 1), Steve Sanders and Ian Charlesworth (leg 2), Sarah Walch and Paul Fryers (leg 3) and Becky Tims (leg 4).

They fielded a mixed team consisting of women and men which came a very creditable 10th place out of 30 teams.

The Dragons Section are still competing for the section's Summer Cup and with one round to go none of the three front runners (Mick Siddall, Noel Weaver and Ian Batty) added to their league scores with disappointing rounds. The round was won by Stuart Roebuck (24) with 37 points. Les Wright (14) was second with 32 points and John Sawdon (22) third with 31 points. Frank Hines (25) and Alan Flack (26) also scored 31 points but lost out to John on countback.

The Gents mid-week stableford on 14 October, was won convincingly by Phil Beaumont (25) with 40 points. Two low handicappers,

and approached the game in a positive manner.

There were disappointed heads and faces in the changing room and rightly so because we are a team and a club that expect the best, we have high standards and we want to be winning games and today’s a game we thought we’d definitely have a chance of getting all three points but it’s a single point on the board, we haven’t lost and we go again at Handsworth in the league on Wednesday and try to turn our performances into points.

Chapeltown cruise to win Bradgate 1-5 Chapeltown Legion

After an even ten minutes, Chapeltown RBL had goalkeeper Ben Palmer to thank for not falling behind when he saved a one on one. Legion then took the lead when Niall Smith played an accurate cross for Denham Saxton to tap in at the back stick. Smith then created the second after heading in to the path of Adam Todd who went past the goalkeeper and slid the ball home.

Legion started the second half brightly and Harley Wilson’s long ball set man of the match Niall Smith free to calmly find the bottom corner.

Joe Sedgwick (5) and Liam O'Sullivan (4), both scored 37 points but Joe took second place on countback.

On17 October the Gents Section competed for the Sunday Stableford. A small field still saw some excellent scoring with Andy Heathcote (22) winning with an excellent 46 points. Andy capped his round with an eagle three on the par 5 8th. Sam Baynham (9) was second with 42 points and best gross of the day with a 69.Nick Broomhead (15) was third with 32 points.

Josh Savage then found space and crossed only for the Bradgate defender to turn in to his own net to make it 4-0.

Smith claimed his third assist of the day when he set Joe Moorhouse off who showed great composure to chip the goalkeeper from the edge of the box.

Bradgate grabbed a late consolation when a free kick from distance evaded everybody and ended up in the far corner.

Steels in derby defeat Worksop 3-2 Steels

Stocksbridge Park Steels battled but just couldn’t get a result as they lost 3-2 to rivals Worksop Town.

There was some drama not long after as it went end-to-end. A Worksop header had to be cleared away by a defender at the last moment as it looked to be heading goalwards. The ball was cleared and it caught Worksop out again, with Mangham running in order to get a repeat of his first. This time, Brooks got there first and was able to clear.

By Adam Allcroft James Baxendale gave Worksop an early lead with a good drive from outside the box. Stocksbridge equalised when Luke Mangham was able to lob the keeper from distance. Worksop retook the lead through Hardy getting the luck of the bounce before finishing, though just after half-time Mangham equalised with a rebounded shot.

Worksop would win the game thanks to Hardy heading in from a corner.

The game was even and it often requires a bit of luck to get the lead again. That is what Worksop got. A Stocksbridge clearance bounced back off one of their own players and fell like a gift to Hardy. He would have been offside had it been a Worksop pass but as it wasn’t, he had all the time in the world to score, and so he went on and did exactly that.

Unfortunately, it was Worksop who got off to the better start. After a second successive corner, the ball was cleared to EFL veteran James Baxendale, who showed his experience by duly smashing it into the bottom corner, giving Hall little chance to save it.

Stocksbridge got off to the best start possible in the second half. Elliott Walker’s cross caused plenty of problems and the initial shot from it was blocked off the line. It was then followed up by Mangham who finished to get his second of the day.

Worksop continued to put pressure on to see if they could kill this game early on. But they pushed too much and would be a caught. A big ball over the top caught out their defence and Mangham was able to latch onto it.

Stocksbridge did have a few chances to grab a point. Mangham headed the ball back for Josh Nodder and his effort looked goalbound until a defender’s block deflected it over. Not long after, a cross bobbled in the Worksop box until Kurtis Turner was able to hit it, but unfortunately it was just wide.
