Sixth Form students shine on A-Level results day Barnsley Sixth Form College is celebrating another excellent set of A Level results with a 99.6% overall pass rate and a 100% pass rate in 26 subjects, including English, Computer Science, Fine Art, Mathematics, Physics and Spanish.

Despite the challenges posed by studying through the COVID19 pandemic, many students have excelled and will now move into Higher Education.

Students spent the first months of their courses learning at home with support from Sixth Form College tutors and staff.

Weronika Glinka received three As in Film Studies, History and Sociology and is planning on studying Classical Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of Oxford. She said: “I received great support from the College in reaching

my goals and the staff are very understanding and helpful in times of need.”

Alfie Wilson is celebrating after securing three A* grades in Physics, Chemistry and Maths.

He said: “I’m really pleased with my results. I am planning on going to the University of York to study Physics. I found all my courses interesting and the tutors and staff are great and have always been supportive.”

Travellers leave high green park 'looking like open sewer'

A major clean-up operation has begun after travellers left a Sheffield park ‘looking like an open sewer’, writes Robert Cumber for the Sheffield Star.

Around 50 caravans had pitched up on Angram Bank in High Green on Sunday, with the occupants moving on yesterday, Friday, August 6, after being served with a formal notice to leave by the council and police threatening them with court action.

Ecclesfield parish councillor David Ogle has shared these photos of the mess left behind following their stay.

Litter can be seen strewn across the grass, with gas canisters, glass and what Mr Ogle says is human excrement among the waste.

Man in his 40s tragically dies in Sheffield park Mr Ogle said: “It’s an open sewer on Angram Bank Park. It’s absolutely covered with waste.”

He said this was the fifth time travellers had set up camp at Angram Bank and he wants the parish council to secure the site with boulders, which he says could cost around £30,000, to prevent them returning.

Liberal Democrat councillors Mike Levery, Alan Hooper and Ann Whitaker said Sheffield Council’s clean-up team had been working around the caravans as they departed on Friday afternoon.

In a joint statement they added: “All hazardous waste was removed including glass and propane bottles, with the final clean-up taking place on Monday.

“Whilst the skatepark and children’s play area are fine, there is still non-hazardous rubbish at certain points around the park which should be avoided.

“Our efforts now turn to reviewing the options for securing the site against future visits whilst main-

taining easy access for local residents.”

John Teasdale, who lives opposite the park, told how travellers had camped out in the park last year and the council had placed large boulders beside the skate park but these did nothing to prevent vehicles from accessing the site.

He said the travellers had ‘completely taken over the park’ during their stay, meaning no one else could use it, and had left toilet paper and litter ‘everywhere’.

The travellers are believed to be heading to the Appleby Horse Fair in Cumbria.

The Facebook group Anti Racist Cumbria has critcised what it describes as unfair ‘anti-traveller sentiment’, saying festival-goers don’t face the same level of opprobrium for the mess they make.

Golf club hosts a visiting party of school children Stocksbridge Golf Club hosted 23 children from St Patrick’s Catholic Voluntary Academy, an inner-city school near to the Northern General Hospital. The visit was arranged by Lady Vice Captain, Heather Evans, who was ably supported by 8 fellow playing members and the Club Professional, Roger Broad (pictured giving some putting advice). The children were welcomed to the Club by President John Yeates, who wished them a fun day. The children spent a full morning doing a range of activities from chipping, bunker play, putting and a longest drive competition. None of the children had ever played golf before and they were fully absorbed in the activities for 3 hours before they tucked into pizza and chips, followed by ice cream.

Heather said that after the event she was really impressed with “how well the children behaved and how much they engaged with the activities.”

Kathryn Fox, the Business Manager for the school said afterwards that “we were absolutely delighted to be invited to the Golf Club. The children had an amazing time, in the most fabulous of settings and were in awe of the golfers that helped during the day. We cannot thank the staff and golfers enough for making it such a special day.”

Given the success of the day the Golf Club is now planning to liaise with local schools in Stocksbridge, Deepcar, Wharncliffe Side and the surrounding areas to offer the same opportunities.

Valley Music Festival set for Fox Valley Fox Valley in north Sheffield will be hosting the two-day Valley Music Festival later this year with a packed line up of local talent taking to the stage The event will run on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th of September alongside the centre’s busy Farmers’ Market and Craft Market.

This will be the third year that the team from Fox Valley have worked with the festival organisers and the first big event since one of the event founders, Steve Osborn sadly passed away.

Steve was passionate about creating opportunities for young people to perform in Stocksbridge and worked with the Fox Valley team in 2018 and 2019 to bring the festival to the award-winning shopping centre.

The aim of the event is to bring the musical community together to perform and raise funds to support young local musicians.

As well as local performers including Harmony Music School, Cocklebread and No Identity the two-day event will also showcase the work of the young people taking part in the band skills workshops held in August funded by the Festival and hopefully a taster if the work done from the the group creating a Community Musical for next years Festival.

As many galleries have been closed due to restrictions we decided that an outdoor exhibition within our local com-

munity would be the perfect opportunity to begin showing our art work to the world again!

The positive posters will be displayed on the fence outside the ArtWorks Thorpe Hesley Community Centre at the top of Brook Hill in Thorpe Hesley from the 14st of August.

We hope our posters inspire the village to make their own positive posters in response to ours. Whether it’s working out how to use zoom, your dog loving you being at home or the work our amazing key workers have been doing, there is always

something to be grateful and hopeful for.

ArtWorks is a small arts organisation which specialises in supporting artists with learning disabilities and autism in accessing the art world. An important part of this work is regular exhibitions which demonstrate the talent of these artists to the public equally to non-disabled artists. In response to the lockdowns and stay home orders, ArtWorks designed posters about things that kept us motivated and inspired, to maintain this crucial connection to the

SOUTH YORKSHIRE LEADERS WELCOME GOVERNMENT PLANS TO ACQUIRE SHEFFIELD FORGEMASTERS PLANT

News that the Ministry of Defence plans to take over Sheffield Forgemasters steel plant has been welcomed by South Yorkshire leaders as a recognition of the importance of the steel industry to the UK’s economy, and the value of government taking an active role to secure its future.

Sheffield Forgemasters is one of the UK’s oldest steel plants and the Ministry of Defence has announced plans to acquire the company and invest £400m over the next ten years.

Responding to the announcement, the South Yorkshire Mayor Dan Jarvis said, “I welcome this move both as a recognition of the importance of steel to our economy, regionally and nationally, and its importance for UK defence.

Steel is synonymous with Sheffield and South Yorkshire and I have repeatedly raised the issue of securing the industry’s future with Government.

While today’s announcement is most welcome, ministers also need to attend to the future of two of our other steel plants which hang in the

balance, as a result of the crisis at Liberty Steel.

The facilities at Stocksbridge and Rotherham have enormous potential, and I will continue to fight for the South Yorkshire steel industry and work to protect all the jobs and businesses they support.

I’ll be meeting the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy in the near future to discuss.”

Catering and Hospitality students from Barnsley College gained valuable catering experience at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2021.

Under the supervision of the College’s Service Industries Programme Manager Martyn Hollingsworth, the students helped produce and dispatch dishes that catered for visitors to the festival.

At the four-day event, students cooked and prepared a range of food in various kitchens including the Lamborghini restaurant and the driver’s club area. They prepared and served food such as pizza, sandwiches, salad, burgers, fish and chicken to celebrities and current and former Formula One drivers.

They also catered for 500 guests at an exclusive garden party where they served a three-course meal with a range of classic and modern cuisine such as honey roasted figs, lightly smoked Goodwood estate beef and pavlova.

Chloe Millis-Poole, one of the Catering and Hospitality students involved, said: “To get to work in kitchens at a large event like the Festival of Speed was a great experience. They were tiring long days, but I've learnt so much about teamwork, patience and preparing food.”

Martyn Hollingsworth added: “We had an absolutely amazing week at the festival. Early mornings, late finishes and cooking a range of different types of food provided a real taste for the fast-paced environment that working at a busy festival

brings. They have shown real grit and determination having rolled up their sleeves and getting stuck in!

The students worked to professional standards throughout the week and were praised by industry experts for their diligence and remarkable work ethic. They did me and Barnsley College proud.

Stocksbridge Town Council lends its support to the creation of an Arts Forum for the area Councillor Susie Abrahams successfully brought together groups and individuals representing the arts community for a meeting at the Town Hall, to look at how the Council might give more support to those involved in the arts. Cllr Abrahams expressed her passion for the arts and recognised how involvement in the arts is important to the health and wellbeing of the community. Cllr Mark Whittaker proposed a new forum to develop arts provision in Stocksbridge and to help struggling arts groups, to find funding to support their work. Those at the meeting agreed that the creation of such a forum would be welcome. Several of those attending volunteered to be on the group which will meet again at Stocksbridge Town Hall on Monday 23rd of August at 7pm.

The group recognised the fact that not all arts groups or artists in the area were represented and would like to invite other members of the arts community to come along and have their say.

We want to encourage crafters, writers, musicians, dancers, poets, painters, sculptors, actors, photographers to get involved so the group can be truly representative of the area. Lord Kerslake to take up new Role as Chair of Sheffield Culture Collective growth and create a stronger and fairer society.

It includes cultural, arts, civic and political leaders as well as senior figures from the regional business community.

Last month the Collective launched its first ever strategy for how culture can unlock Sheffield’s untapped economic and social potential.

Sheffield Culture Collective has appointed Lord Bob Kerslake to oversee implementation of the organisation’s inaugural strategy and help drive investment and growth in the region’s cultural sector.

Lord Kerslake takes over from Dame Julie Kenny and will take up his new role in September.

Sheffield Culture Collective is a public private partnership which was formed in 2019 in response to a national enquiry into how cities can use culture to drive

In the strategy it spotlighted delivery of four pivotal arts projects which could become the north’s cultural crown jewels.

These include the S1 Artspace at Park Hill, The Graves Gallery and Central Library, education and music partnership Harmony Works and Tinsley Art Project.

Lord Kerslake said: “I congratulate the Collective for the excellent work it has already done under Dame Julie Kenny’s leadership in creating its groundbreaking strategy.

“The task ahead is to move this to delivery. This will only be possible with a clear focus on the priorities and close collaboration across the partnership. It will predominately be about influencing leadership and powerful advocacy.

“I look forward to working with others to make the strategy a reality.”

Dame Julie added: “I am delighted that Lord Kerslake has been appointed as the next Chair of the Collective.

Douglas MORTON 17/3/1932 to 19/7/2021

Hillsborough Golf Club President 2008 - 2009 Douglas, more commonly known as Doug, was a well known figure in the Look Local area having lived in Oughtibridge and Worrall all his life.

Having started his working life in the old Silica Brickworks in Oughtibridge, he bought a fruit and vegetable retail business from a relative when he was in his early 20’s, opened a shop on Langsett Rd in Oughtibridge and sold produce from a mobile shop in the Oughtibridge, Wharncliffe Side and Worrall districts.

He became a member of the Oughtibridge Brass Band from the age of 6 , played for 18 yrs with the band and became conductor for a short spell later in life.

He then joined the Sheffield Recreation Band and played well into his forties . His favourite venue was the Bandstand in Peasholme Park in Scarborough.

His favourite saying was “Ive played in the Albert Hall and sung in the Albert Hall“.

He was a founder member of the Worrall Male Voice Choir and then sang with the Bolsterstone MVC along with his brother Les in its hey day in the 80’s and 90’s.

Doug was also a popular member of Hillsborough Golf Club, holding both the position of Captain and President.

He sadly passed away in the Alpine Lodge Care home in July aged 89, the family would like to thank all the staff for their wonderful care of Doug in his final months.

Doug’s funeral will be held at Oughtibridge Church on 17/8/2021 at 12 noon , followed by a reception at Hillsborough Golf Club.

All former friends and musical colleagues are welcome now restrictions have been lifted.

Mrs Judith SHAW died on Tuesday 3rd August 2021.

She died at her home following a short illness.

She was born May 5th, 1944 and was married to the late Michael Shaw with whom she had 3 children, Helen, David and Richard.

A funeral service will be held at The Christian Centre, Cedar Road on Thursday 26th August at 10am, followed by a reception.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made which will be shared between The Christian Centre and St Luke’s Hospice, in Judith’s name.

John FURNISS Passed away peacefully on 6th August with his loving Wife and children by his side.

Loved by all.

Insensitive headline Dear Editor I write to agree very much with Mr Morton’s letter in your last issue.

Signs up warning people not to fly tip and that they are being watched, but it obviously hasn’t deterred the porcelain dumper nor the others who have left rubbish in bags. Presumably the latter mentioned of which are left over from the bins being full previously? Or is it that the depositors couldn’t be bothered to tip the bag contents into the slit of the locked bins and hence chose to leave them for someone else to deal with instead?

Perhaps if the Council stopped charging at Council dump it sites and provided more bins with bigger slits or easy to open lids to enable black bags and contents to be deposited, the “fly tipping” (which most of the time is due to bins being full when people call and obviously don’t want to haul their rubbish back home with them to await another opportunity) wouldn’t be such a problem.

To label people who struggle with addiction in such an unfeeling way is to have little thought or feeling’s for anyone. HAVE A HOLIDAY IN THE GARDEN August is usually the month when most of us go on holiday and leave our gardens to fend for themselves. But this year is slightly different, with a lot of us either staying at home or opting for getaways in the UK. If you are planning a trip away from home then a little thought before you go and some tender loving care when you return will be enough to make sure your garden survives the summer.

Try and arrange to have your containers and baskets watered, or set up a system that can supply water on a regular basis to your tubs and baskets. Move any baskets and containers out of full sun to a position where they are shaded at the height of the day. Stand terracotta pots on gravel trays topped up with water, so the pots can gradually absorb the reservoir of liquid or alternatively make a few holes in the lid of a plastic water bottle, cut off the bottom of the bottle,

turn upside down into the plant compost and then fill with water (which slowly drips into the soil).

You can apply the same watering principles to your veg patch as well. August (and September) is a month of gathering, harvesting, bottling and jam making for all ‘Grow Your Own’ gardeners. However, if the weather remains good in some areas you can still sow quick maturing salad crops such as lettuce, radish, rocket and chicory.

Create your very own ‘moveable’ salad patch by planting them in troughs and containers. Cherry tomatoes from the vine, sweetcorn on the barbeque, a warm salad of tender green beans and a home grown side salad … with some flowers for the table picked from the garden - lovely!

A sweetly fragrant plant that works well as a cut flower but can also be used to attract wildlife such as bees and insects into the garden is Phlox. Flowering in mid Summer through to the end of the Autumn, Phlox is a superb hardy herbaceous perennial originally from North America, with scented star-shaped pink, white and purple/blue flowers. It is the ideal border plant, often used in cottage gardens, but is also good as a cut flower and can grow quite tall so may need some support.

Phlox likes a well nourished soil that has been enriched with rotted compost or manure and prefers full sun although it can tolerate partial shade. In late autumn cut the stems right down to the base and then mulch in early spring.

August is usually one of the hottest months of the year - making watering essential - but other jobs for this month from the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) include ...

Another win for Stocksbridge 1st XI

New look openers Matt Price and Ben Cherry took to the crease and the pair begin to get into their stride, both starting really confidently. The pair never looked like getting out and the pair batted with ease. Both of them completely controlling the run chase.

The score was knocked off within 9 overs giving the 1st XI a commanding 10 wicket victory. Price finished unbeaten on 24 and Cherry finished unbeaten on 30. It was a superb all round victory for the 1st XI who continue their brilliant form. They travel to Sheffield University Staff next.

Stocksbridge 1st XI welcomed De La Salle to Bracken moor looking to continue their good form and their pursuit of the title. With the weather been poor in the week it was important to win the toss.

Skipper Andy Hibbert did just this and elected to bowl first on a day that favoured the bowlers.

Openers Jake Vickers and Andy Hibbert got into their work and started brilliantly both picking up a wicket each to get the 1st off to a flyer. Skipper Hibbert picked up his second and third wickets of the game to leave De La Salle 6-4 and in real trouble now right from the get go. A little partnership, where some risks were taken, took them up to 47, however it was Joe Hibbert who came into the attack and broke it. It was Hibbert junior who was the destroyer as he ripped through the De La Salle batting line up, finishing with incredible figures of 6 wickets for just 1 run.

Stocksbridge 2nds travelled to high-flying Baslow this weekend, looking to cause an upset with a depleted 10man line-up. Stocksbridge batted first on an interesting looking wicket. Unfortunately for Stocksbridge, they lost opener Ogley for a duck, shortly followed by number 3 Dave Smith, who joined Ogley back in the pavilion without troubling the scorers. Ant Siddall tried to provide some form of stability at the top of the order and kept the scoreboard ticking nicely.

When number 4 Garratt was also dismissed for a duck, Stocksbridge were looking in real trouble of sinking without trace. William Cavanagh came to the middle and both Cavanagh and Siddall tried to rescue some form of respectable total. Both batsmen were eventually dismissed in the 20s after a number of quality boundaries and great resilience against some good Baslow bowling. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, with only Cal Haywood joining Cavanagh and Siddall in scoring double figures. Haywood showed no sign of rust after returning to the line-up, smashing the game’s only 6 as well as two glorious boundaries. In the end Stocksbridge were dismissed for just 72, Cavanagh (22), Siddall (21) and Haywood (17) the only batsmen to reach double figures.

Stocksbridge started their reply with the ball in excellent tight fashion. The opening pair of Thwaites and Brearley bowled well early on, with their combined opening 12 overs going for just 8 runs. The Baslow batsmen were protecting their wickets well and digging in well against good bowling early on. Brearley amazingly bowling 5

League Team miss out on promotion at the Golf Club

Stocksbridge Golf Club League Team missed out on promotion from Division 5 of the Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs (SUGC). They lost their penultimate league match away to Lindrick by a big margin of 7-1. With one home match to go the team cannot now seal one of the two automatic promotion places that have been taken

by Lindrick and Serlby Park.

League Team Captain, Liam O'Sullivan said: "it's gutting to miss out on promotion, particularly given that we were in such a strong position at the half way point in the season." Club Captain, Alan Revill said: "I'm really disappointed for the team because they have played some outstanding golf. The individual performance of Danny Costello to go unbeaten up to this point is a measure of how well they have played.

Third place in this league is no disgrace and hopefully

next season they will go one better."

To prove how good Danny's form has been, in an SUGC Open competition at Hillsborough Golf Club on the 6 August, he finished 16th in a field of 52 golfers, that included many regional grade players. In the field, and only a couple of shots in front of Danny, was the Open qualifier Jonathon Thomson.

The Dragons Section competed for the August Medal on 4 August. Mick Siddall (17) won by a convincing margin with a net 61. Ian Batty (15) was second with a net 65, followed by four players (Stuart Marsden, Doug Needham, Tony Peers and Frank Milnes) all scoring net 66s. Stuart Marsden (29) took third place on countback.

The next day the Gents Section competed for the Midweek August Medal. Brian Dobb (17) won with a net 62.

Steve Coutts (10) was second with a net 64 and Shaun Stapleton (12) was third with a net 65.

Then over the weekend the Gents competed for the Kilbride Cup, a two-day competition that was played in some wet and windy weather.

Andy Taylor won the stroke play format competition with an impressive net 126 shots, with rounds of 60 and 66.

Andy Hogg was second with a net 129 shots, with rounds of 63 and 66. Danny Costello maintained his season long form in third place with a net 135 shots, the same score as Eddie Steele and Richard Grimmer. Danny, whose two rounds included an eagle and several birdies, took third place on countback.

Steels complete dismal pre-season

Stocksbridge Park Steels completed a winless pre-season after losing 2-0 to a Chesterfield XI Just after the start of the second half, Chesterfield took the lead after a onetwo allowed Matty Feutardo the space to fire in. Kian Tansley made the most of a Spireites break to go past Ed Hall and score to finish the game off.

Stocksbridge tried to come back into the game but nothing was doing. Whitham was working very hard and had two shots saved by substitute keeper Josh Watson in short succession but it wasn’t enough. Stocksbridge finish pre-season without a win and will host Stockton Town on the 14th at the Eco Power Environmental Stadium.

Interestingly enough both teams fielded a Thompson, an 18 year-old Declan was in the ranks for the Owls whilst his father, Lee, 38, came off the bench for Steels.

Lee is Assistant manager at Steels, whilst Declan who made his debut for Steels as a 15 year-old made his senior debut for the Owls in last seasons FA cup.
