Let’s Get Walking Challenge Raises almost £1000 John O’Groats to Land’s End The pupils of Bradfield Dungworth Primary School have been busy with the Parents & Friends Association Fundraising Challenge - Let’s get Walking.

The challenge is for each ‘house’ at school to walk or run the distance from John O’Groats to Land's End. The total distance to travel the whole length between the two extremities is 874 miles – that’s a long way for little legs.

The children have totted up their weekly mileage and have been watching the flags in house colours move across

the map of the UK as they have collected sponsorship and mileage! The children have had a great time taking part.

Ice-cool golfer competes in The Open Iceland delivery driver from Wharncliffe Side competes with world golf’s ‘most prestigious’ Its not every day you’re likely to see your local supermarket delivery ‘guy’ competing with sporting elites in one of sports major competitions, not until last weekend, that is.

Nicholas Poppleton, of Wharncliffe Side usually spends his Saturdays delivering groceries from Iceland at Fox Valley, Stocksbridge.

Last weekend, however, the 27 year-old was playing in The Open Golf Championship against the world’s best golfers.

In a practice round, at Royal St. Georges course in Kent, Nicholas was paired with 12 time Major champion Phil Mickelson and US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau. Nicholas described the two,

as just regular guys who encouraged him to enjoy the experience.

Nicholas told Look Local “The whole experience was just awesome and it has opened up a couple of doors of opportunity in the world of golf for me, but if Iceland need me back for a Saturday shift then I’ll be there, they are all lovely people.”

Nicholas had managed to play golf ’s biggest tournament, The Open, through regional qualifying rounds, where he shot -7 and -3 earlier in the year.

Whilst fellow competitors broke down in tears at qualifying, Nicholas remained calm “ It didn’t really hit me until I got there and saw some of the worlds best golfers on the putting greens.

Nicholas who took up golf as a 13 yearold after playing football and tennis as a youngster thanked everyone.

Also to Wath, Rotherham and Hillsborough Golf Courses where I play/practice locally, thankyou” The Open Championship is referred to as the oldest and most prestigious golf tournament in the world, with a prize fund of £8.3m.

Crossing ‘unsafe’ claim residents Residents claim a pedestrian crossing outside Oughtibridge Co-op is unsafe, writes the Sheffield Star.

A dangerous temporary crossing has been in place for nine months because of a delay with traffic light parts.

The makeshift crossing was installed outside the Co-op on Langsett Road in Oughtibridge last autumn following a planning condition which said the new supermarket, and two other shop units, needed a pedestrian crossing.

The work should have been completed in April but there are still temporary lights, no road markings and no official signs.

Local residents say the crossing is dangerous because some drivers don’t realise it is there and shoot straight through it.

An assortment of long-standing road works have made it difficult to enter the Co-op car park and reduced visibility. And there’s also been problems with the lights sticking on red causing tailbacks.

Coun Julie Grocutt, Deputy Leader of Sheffield Council and a Stocksbridge councillor, said she hoped the work would be completed in August.

Labour has raised concerns about the management of a flagship levelling up scheme after it emerged that decisions about one local £24m fund were primarily led by a group including the local MP, her husband, and others with personal or business links to some of the plans.

Sources in Stocksbridge say declarations of interest and other documents were produced after Sheffield city council expressed alarm at the lack of visible governance.

Documents also show that the towns fund board for Stocksbridge in South Yorkshire, co-chaired by Conservative MP Miriam Cates, met for eight months before members began filing details of personal interests, and that the scheme of governance was only published after more than a year.

As well as Cates, her husband, David, also sits on the board, and a local businessman, Ian Sanderson, a business partner of David Cates.

The co-chair is Mark Dransfield, a local property developer from whom Miriam Cates rents her constituency office. He owns a retail park in Stocksbridge directly adjoining two of the proposed local regeneration schemes. Dransfield’s sister-in-law, who formerly worked for his company, sits on a subcommittee.

Board members also include representatives from other local businesses, as well as from Sheffield council and the regional authority.

While there is no suggestion of any wrongdoing, critics say the management of the £24.1m awarded to Stocksbridge, just north of Sheffield, highlights wider worries about oversight by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), which is distributing the £3.6bn fund.

The MHCLG has said it carries out governance reviews of towns fund boards before distributing any money. After Labour sought

One would involve the regeneration of Manchester Road, the town’s main high street, which adjoins the Fox Valley retail park, which is owned by Dransfield’s company.

Another proposed idea is to build an unusual funicular link between the town centre and Fox Valley, billed as a way to move people up and down a steep hill and as a local tourist attraction.

The board is also seeking to spend at least £2m or more on an all-weather football pitch, even though Stocksbridge is not named on the Football Foundation’s list of priority areas for new facilities in England.

However, others reject any conflict of interest, saying that a revitalised Manchester Road would be an alternative draw to Fox Valley, and that the funicular link is planned as part of a wider regeneration plan for the town.

Steve Reed, Labour’s shadow communities secretary, said the public would be “alarmed to find that important regional development funding schemes are potentially open to serious abuse”.

He said: “Ministers must publish towns deal governance reviews immediately and reassure taxpayers their money is being spent properly and projects are being delivered in their interests” An MHCLG spokesperson said: “Town deal boards have clear processes for governance

and decision-making, and for managing potential conflicts of interest. MHCLG has reviewed the governance of all town deal boards and found no cause for concern.”

All financial and governance arrangements are managed professionally by Sheffield City Council, and they are leading on the day-to-day progress of the work involved in delivering our Town Investment Plan. Local people have come together and volunteered their time and experience to help develop a transformative plan that will use this money to benefit the entire community. I can see no reason why the people of Stocksbridge do not deserve high quality facilities, a regenerated high street, and better infrastructure in their town.”

Mark Dransfield, co-Chair of the Stocksbridge Town Deal Board, said: “As someone who lives and works in this community I am incredibly proud of the hard work of the whole Town Deal Board in bringing forward a range of transformational projects which are going to make a real difference to our town.

We are lucky to have a great team of people including representatives from the voluntary and business community on the board to help in the delivery of this fantastic opportunity to bring investment into the area. Our public consultation last year has shaped our bid and the next stage in this process will be to organise further consultation in the community, which I am looking forward to taking part in, to help shape the next stage of the bid.”

“I’m really concerned that the lights aren’t working correctly and I have been in contact with the developer to ask for this to be resolved as a matter of urgency.

“I have been told that unfortunately there is a delay on the parts, but I have asked for them to keep me updated on a weekly basis to ensure we get this repaired as soon as possible.

“This is clearly a problem and I fully understand how irritated residents are about this, please continue to take care and I will continue to push and follow up on this issue being resolved.”

School Receives Award for Services During Pandemic Stocksbridge High School is celebrating after securing an ‘Award of Appreciation’ from the Stocksbridge Town Council.

The school, based on Shay House Lane was presented with the award by The Mayor of Stocksbridge and Chairman of Stocksbridge Town Council Richard Crowther at the school on 8th July.

Mr Crowther praised the school for its passion and capability to meet the educational needs of its students during the pandemic.

He said “Stocksbridge High School staff have provided an exceptional service to its students and their families, despite the obstacles, they have worked tirelessly to ensure that every student has continued to receive a high standard of education.”

“This includes their robust online teaching and support provision, as well as their successful reintroduction procedures which have

worked to ensure every student and staff member has returned to site safely and has settled in quickly”.

A part of these reintroduction procedures was the offer of in-house rapid flow testing. Volunteer staff members received training to test and were available on site every day to ensure every staff and student was safe to be onsite and not at risk of spreading Covid-19.

An event organised by Barnsley College saw over 100 students and staff complete the Barnsley Totally Tokyo Challenge by running, walking and cycling through a breath-taking 5,847-mile journey to the forthcoming Tokyo Olympics.

Every time the team completed a distancebased exercise such as running, walking or cycling, the College team advanced along the map from Barnsley towards Tokyo and virtually explored the culture of Germany, Poland, Belarus, Russia, Mongolia, China, South Korea and Tokyo.

Headteacher Andy Ireland said of the award “The rapid flow testing is just one example of how the community has stepped up and gone above and beyond to ensure we can continue to teach.”

He continued, “Our staff, students and families have shown great resilience over the past year, I send my heartfelt thanks to every one of them. This award is for us all. It is a testament to the hard work, strong partnerships and resilience that have got us through this year.”

College races to Tokyo 2020 Olympics

During the event, students and staff raised money for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Little Bears project to help towards raising vital funds for a new cancer and leukaemia ward.

Stocksbridge High School was also responsible for ensuring the continued health and welfare of their students during the school closure.

They provided food vouchers and parcels to the families of students struggling financially and continued the commitment to safeguarding and providing welfare checks to students who

were unable to be on school grounds.

Mia Wesson, Health and Safety Officer/ Trainer at Barnsley College, said: “I would love for challenges like this to continue as it gives you a great sense of team spirit, some drive and determination, and as we know, it is wonderful for our mental wellbeing too. I think as a College we have a team of great people who can do amazing things.”

30 years! 1991 – 2021 Cupola Gallery reaches her 30th anniversary “How on earth did that happen?” says a slightly bewildered Karen Sherwood. Ms Sherwood opened Cupola Gallery as an ambitious, optimistic and in her own words ‘slightly deluded’ 23 year old in ‘unfashionable’ Hillsborough, in August 1991.

In order to celebrate this remarkable achievement, especially after such an unprecedented 15 months, Cupola gallery is celebrating with a large diverse exhibition of talent across all media, from artists old and new, alongside a free programme of engaging arts activities.

Famously the gallery opened in between a betting shop and a launderette around the corner from the Sheffield Wednesday Football Ground.

30 years later the gallery remains in the same location, although the betting shop has been replaced by Cupola’s own quality bespoke picture framing service and the launderette is long gone.

Cupola Gallery, also known as Cupola Contemporary Art, opened to fill what Ms Sherwood saw as a huge need for an exhibition and sales venue for the many contemporary artists that lived and worked across the city. As a fine art graduate herself she was totally shocked at the lack of display and sales opportunities for artists in a city the size of Sheffield. Indeed, this seemed even more shocking due to the fact that the art college had been established for over 150 years at that time and there were at least three, if not more, vibrant studio groups in operation.

“I wanted to open a welcoming, accessible, high quality

contemporary art gallery to celebrate the talents of artists and to sell their work. Too many artists were ‘packing it in’ because they could not make a living. I hated seeing that.”

To say it hasn’t been an easy ride is somewhat of an understatement!” Karen laughs.

“When people talk to me about all the challenges the gallery has faced, I’m often told I should write a book.

However I am afraid that, like Mark Twain, I’d have to publish it 100 years after I’ve died! To be honest, rather than worrying about all the things that have gone wrong, I’d rather concentrate on the fact that the gallery is still here. I find that amazing enough. I keep thinking I can’t possibly be old enough to have run the gallery for 30 years, until I see the children of my customers I remember seeing as babies in arms, with their own children!

Cupola Gallery has shown the work of over 10,000 artists from all corners of the

world a well as nurturing locally based talent.

The current exhibition cannot hope to represent the breadth and diversity of artists we have shown but we hope it reminds people that we never stand still, are just as keen now to experiment and push boundaries, whilst remaining accessible and friendly as when the gallery started. Cupola is a non funded independent gallery which does not fit into a neat category and nor does it want to. It is a gallery of passion and welcome. Oh and cake!”

Stocksbridge Town Council At the last Town Council meeting it was once again raised that a number of groups and individuals in the community would like to have a space for arts activities.

We have many venues in our community including local community halls and including the very extensive space of the Venue.

None of these venues receive funds or grants from any organisation statutory or voluntary.

The Town Council would like to meet with individuals and groups to consider how we could assist in facilitating the use of these excellent facilities we have in our community.

‘So, we have just learnt that our Prime Minister didn’t really want to lockdown in the Autumn because a) Covid was mostly only killing those people over 80 who had already lived longer than expected and, b) he “… doesn’t buy all this NHS being overwhelmed stuff ”. Perhaps he was one of those warped people who used to sneak around hospitals and make video recordings of deserted corridors and wards! Whilst we have all become accustomed to the endless stream of lies and fabrications peddled by ministers the above revelations from Boris Johnson are truly shameful. They only serve to show the contempt he has for our most senior citizens (he probably sees them as a burden on society… and clearly expendable!) and the true value he places on our wonderful NHS and key workers who we all know have paid a heavy price and continue to carry us through this pandemic. Beyond this we now find ourselves as the only country in the world which has decided to remove all Covid regulations (a policy supported by our own MP Miriam Cates) in the face of Covid cases that are widely acknowledged to be out of control. England’s record in the face of this pandemic has been truly woeful (the most deaths in Europe and third highest globally; devastation in our care homes; the US and other countries now advising their people not to visit Britain because it is the most risky place to go etc) whilst ministers hide behind the success of the vaccine program. What we really needed was decisive, clear, well-founded strategic leadership from government rather than the incoherent shambles and contempt for the population we have endured.

Calling all young people who play an instrument, sing, dance or act or who like the technical aspects of theatre like sound and lighting, or costume making and set design.

I would like to tell your readers about some great holiday activities in the valley in the performing arts for young people over the summer. We would also like to talk to adults who might like to get involved with volunteering. After the isolation of lockdowns and disruption of school and general lack of arts activities during Covid this will be a great outlet for young people to express themselves and improve their well-being.

All the workshops are free to those taking part, but numbers will have to be limited so booking will be essential.

Valley Musical from scratch 10th and 11th August at Cedar Road.

We want to get a group of young people together to write a Valley Musical from scratch. There will be two workshop days on 10th and 11th August for young people to explore story lines and issues that affect them and through workshop activity to explore a storyline and characters writing and composing and finally working through all aspects of theatre craft and performance perform an original musical. The performance will form part of next year’s Valley Music Festival There will also be an opportunity for young people to take the Trinity Arts Award certification.

Making Music Day – 26th August Cedar Road

Bring your guitars, amps, drums, sax’s trumpets, voices, winds and strings etc for a making music workshop for young musicians learning all the band rues about working together forming bands and performing at the Valley Music Festival on 4th and 5th September. The band day will be at Cedar Matt Percival Road on Thursday 26th August working with professional band musicians who have worked internationally. We will provide a basic sound rig.

Hello! I hope you are well. This month’s article is full of positivity but with a slightly sad ending, as it is my final column in this wellbeing series. I have enjoyed writing this column for the past year and I hope that there has been advice in it that you or others have found useful and helpful.

After two years of writing mental health books and columns I am taking a short break to focus on other writing projects, including a debut fictional novel.

I would like to thank the team at Look Local for the opportunity to share this column with you and for

appreciating the need to promote positive mental health and wellbeing within our community.

Our society and world have been through a lot of changes and challenges over the last year – so give yourself a pat on the back for making it through.

As mentioned in previous articles there are a few key things you can do to help improve your mental health – let’s call them the basics.

Firstly, always talk about how you are feeling. Speak to someone you trust; someone you can rely on or just someone who will listen to you.

Keeping your thoughts and feelings trapped inside will just make you feel worse and worse. We live in an ever accepting and tolerant society so make sure to speak out about the things that are troubling you.

There will still be challenges ahead but hopefully you have realised just how resilient and strong you are and can be when needed.

If you are currently suffering from anxiety, depression, or another mental health illness then there is always help out there. It might feel like you are alone, but I promise you, you are not.

I have spoken to a lot of people over the last 12 months who have opened up to me about their symp-

You should also try to exercise as much as you can. Whether that is a walk in the park, a gym session, kick about or something else. Exercise should be prioritised and the role it can play in helping to create positive mental health should not be underestimated.

You should also be kind to yourself. It’s okay to not be okay and it’s okay to have bad days. Sometimes you will feel anxious, sometimes you will feel like a failure and sometimes you will feel sad. That is life. However, there will also be days where you smile as wide as the Nile, and life just seems perfect. At the end of every storm the sun will shine, so remember that when you are trapsing through those grey sky

days. Finally, if you are really struggling then make sure to reach out to your doctor and a mental health charity. They will be able to support you and signpost you to the services that can and will help you.

Church welcome new players

A busy week for Penistone Church saw the NCEL outfit play three fixtures and welcome four players to the squad.

Tom Brennan (pictured) , James Young and Wayne Hughes returned to Penistone after spells at Campion, Dodworth and Emley respectively.

New to Church, Leon Hurles-Brook has also joined the club from Campion.

All three games ended in draws, a 2-2 draw with Worsborough Bridge was followed up with a goalless game with Parkgate FC Saturday 17th July 2021 Penistone Church 1-1 Sheffield FC James Young 84, Joel Purkiss - 45 Attendance - 182 A report by Martin Webb A scorching hot day with azure skies set the scene for this action-packed friendly between the oldest football club in the world and the hometown of those that helped Sheffield FC create the modern game.

It was the oldest club who broke the deadlock just before half-time when Joel Purkiss beat Chris Snaith in the Church goal with a low shot to the right of the Church goal.

This all-action game started to swing Church’s way. Church worked the ball down the right and Nicky Guest shot from 20 yards drawing a great save from the Sheffield keeper.

Church nearly grabbed an instant equaliser with a deflected shot that crept just wide of the post.

Church continued to find space and their attacking work led to a free kick 20 yards wide to the right of goal. James Young shot low and hard, hitting the left-hand post as the ball flew into the net beyond the strand keeper.

Church had the better of yard early exchanges in the second half, but Sheffield had some deft touches. Church launched a long ball down the middle that Kiran Ryan ran onto, the Sheffield defender managed just to get something on it to deflect the shot wide of the right-hand post.

After 65 minutes Church made 4 substitutions. Soon after, Danny Howes found space on the edge of the box and his powerful shot clipped the bar as it went over.

Jordan Coduri broke free down the left but his low shot was saved by the goalkeeper's feet.

Sheffield opened up the Church defence in midfield and Adam Rhodes made a smart save at close range low to his left.

Sheffield very nearly snatched a late winner with the last kick of the game but the ball hit the outside of Church's left-hand post.

This match was an excellent advert for nonleague football, with plenty of goalmouth action at both ends.

The crowd of 182 stayed to applaud the teams from the pitch.

Sporting Chance Sheffield for Men Sporting Chance Sheffield (part of the Volunteering Matters National Charity) are pleased to announce the re start of face-to-face activity and engagement sessions for men, “things have been tough for everyone during lockdown, but staff, volunteers and beneficiaries are all looking forward to meeting up once more”.

3-30pm, Activities on offer include badminton, Table Tennis, Crib, Bridge, Card Games, Board Games, Quizzes ; we also arrange occasional trips out and meals. People can opt in and out of activities as they wish depending on their fitness levels or how they feel on the day. “Some of the chaps come just for a chit chat, whilst others prefer the more active element”.

We have provided on-line activities, writing schemes, telephone support over the last year, but can’t wait to see our existing participants and offer a warm welcome to new men joining in the groups.

Coordinator and Project Development Officer Stocksbridge Community Care Group has a vacancy for a Coordinator and Project Development Officer.

The jobholder will provide general administrative support for SCCG services and organise the delivery of the care services into the community.

SCCG is a registered charity funded by charitable donations. Its aim is the support of vulnerable members of the community who may be suffering as a result of isolation, age, bereavement and dementia. The support is delivered through a team of trained volunteers which are coordinated by the jobholder.

The job is for 10 hours per week to be spread over two days at £12.50 per hour. The post is initially for the period up to March 31st 2022 but may extend further subject to available funding.

STEELS STILL WAITING FOR FIRST WIN Maltby 2-1 Stocksbridge PS

Stocksbridge Park Steels are still waiting for their first win in pre-season after a 2-1 loss to Maltby Main.

The Steels took the lead after Scott Ruthven reacted quickest following a good save from the Matlby goalkeeper.

In the second half, Maltby came back with a powerful close-range finish by Jamie Austin and then a thumping header from Reggie Wauld.

Stocksbridge came out of the traps in the first half eager to impress after last weekend’s loss to Stockport Town. Jordan Lemon was lively on the right, causing issues by overlapping with Josh Nodder.

He got the first shot of the game when he passed a player after cutting inside, but his shot was blocked away for a corner.

The Steels continued to have the better of the early part of the game. Ruthven flicked on from the near post but his

Ruthven almost got a second as well. The other Austin playing for Maltby had a nightmarish header back to the goalkeeper and it went past Warhurst. Stocksbridge Golf Club is also home to the Stocksbridge Bandits Society. It's a mixture of playing members and occasional golfers who all play regularly at the club. On the 13 July the Bandits played their latest game with Richard Moore winning the stableford format with a thumping 43 points. Richard was a distant 5 points clear of Alan Mosley in second place with 38 points. Mick Shouler and Noel Weaver both scored 35 points, but Mick took third place on countback.

Finally, there was a MidWeek Pro's Prize on 15 July.

Hague couldn’t be kept out of the game, following his excellent catch, he then removed the very dangerous Ide for 45, after a smart stumping by Ben Lyons. Hague continued to work his way through the Hallam middle order, removing Feldman for 7, before taking another superb caught and bowled to remove Wickham for 7. James Hague finished with 4-48 from his 10 overs, including two caught and bowls and a fantastic catch off the bowling of Ogley, a brilliant all-round effort in the field.

Hallam were now 109-7, with Stocksbridge looking to wrap up the innings. Youngster Freddie Scott however had other ideas, racing quickly to 30, resurrecting the Hallam score to 155 in the process, before being ran out by Jack Firth. Thwaites and Harris wrapped up the innings with another wicket each, Hallam eventually being bowled out for 163.

Due to two main bowlers having to isolate, there was a new opening pair for Stocksbridge, with captain Thwaites being joined by swing-king Les Harris. The pair started well, causing the Hallam openers numerous problems. Thwaites struck first, flattening Dyde’s off stump for 6. Harris quickly joined the party, removing fellow opener Laycock for just 7.

Hallam were now just 15-2 after 6 overs.

The Stocksbridge reply got off to the worst possible start, with both openers Firth and Ogley both being dismissed for ducks.

Up stepped the hero of the hour, Ben Lyons, who looked superb from his first over.

Ben was middling everything, smashing boundaries galore. Ably assisted by veteran Malc Perry, Lyons moved into the 40s with a lovely 6. Unfortunately for Ben he fell just short of his 50, finally being caught out on the boundary for 48. Lyons had turned the game on its head, smashing 48 off just 35 balls and moving Stocksbridge from 82-6 to 148-7.

Captain Thwaites now joined Malc Perry in the middle, with Stocksbridge requiring 16 from the final 7 overs. The pair thought they’d seen Stocksbridge over the line, only for Perry to be given out in comedic fashion due to confusion with a runner. The scores were now level and following a wide ball by Khan, Stocksbridge won with just 3 balls remaining. A great game for the neutral and a fantastic fight back by Stocksbridge who take home the 25 points.
