STEELWORKS STILL FOR SALE Liberty Steel is still seeking a buyer for Stocksbridge plant as new UK boss appointed, reports The Belfast Telegraph The company said it is ‘continuing to assess a sales process for its UK aerospace and special alloys factory in Stocksbridge.

Liberty Steel has said it is still looking for a buyer for its factory near Sheffield and has appointed a new UK chief executive as the business tries to refinance its debts after its main lender collapsed.

The company said it “is continuing to assess a sales process” for the UK aerospace and special alloys steel plant that it owns in Stocksbridge.

Bosses have been looking for a buyer for the site for more than a month amid pressure on the GFG Alliance, of which Liberty Steel is a part.

GFG had borrowed heavily from Greensill Capital, a supply chain finance lender, racking up multibillion-dollar arrangements.

But administrators for Greensill now want that money back after the lender collapsed in March, forcing GFG to refinance its operations.

Sanjeev Gupta, the tycoon behind GFG, said: “The refinancing of the group, which is progressing well, brings closer the point of being able to honour our obligations to creditors.”

He added: “Despite the difficult circumstances, GFG Alliance contains many highquality businesses which are performing strongly in record markets where customer demand and pricing are strong.

“By refocusing our businesses, we will protect more jobs and lay the foundations for future sustainable growth.”

Liberty Steel’s UK managing director, Jon Ferriman, will step down on Friday, while Roy Chowdhury, a turnaround and industry expert, will be appointed chief executive.

Liberty Steel chief restructuring officer Jeffrey Stein said: “We are aware of the significant challenges facing the group but are pleased that we are making good progress to refinance, repay creditors and refocus the group on our core assets.

“Much remains to be done but we are optimistic that a vibrant, well-funded, profitable and sustainable business will emerge as we systematically restructure and transform the group.”

Hillsborough drugs den discovered

Police discover £320,000 drug den in residential street in Hillsborough

Two men have been charged after police officers discovered a £320,000 drug den in a residential street in Sheffield, report the Sheffield Star.

They raided a house in Holme Lane, Hillsborough, and found 300 cannabis plants and a number of bags of cropped cannabis.

The value of the plants and drugs seized is estimated to be £320,000.

Sergeant Simon Kirkham said the drug seizures will have ‘hurt someone's business model’.

He added: “The electrics were bypassed and were dangerous.

“Both those arrested have been charged and remanded before appearing at court for offences under the Misuse of Drugs Act. “The Walkley and Hillsborough team was established in February 2020 straight into the teeth of a global pandemic. It has remained providing a policing footprint in this area ever since, seizing more than £3.2 million worth of cannabis from similar grows and sending three people to prison so far. Two men have since been charged.

“The support from the community has been excellent and genuinely makes a difference.”

Tramlines to go ahead at full capacity

Sold-out Tramlines Festival will go ahead at full capacity in Sheffield’s Hillsborough Park from July 23rd to 25th as part of Events Research Programme Sheffield’s Tramlines Festival 2021 today announces that it will join the third phase of the Government’s Events Research Programme, allowing the sold-out music festival at Hillsborough Park to take place at full capacity on 23rd to 25th July.

The Streets, Royal Blood and Richard Ashcroft will headline a world-class lineup of music and culture throughout a landmark weekend for the city.

Tramlines’ participation in the programme means the festival can go ahead independently of national reopening dates and the audience will be able to enjoy the event without compulsory social distancing or masks.

At the entrance to the festival, ticket holders (except children under 11) will be asked for proof of EITHER: • A negative COVID result from a lateral flow test taken within the previous 48 hours.

Bid To Level Up Penistone Line Miriam Cates, the MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, has described a bid to improve rail services on the Penistone Line as "a fantastic opportunity to boost connectivity on one of our left-behind local railway lines."

A £47million bid to the Government's Levelling Up Fund has been co-sponsored by Mrs Cates and Mark Eastwood, the MP for Dewsbury in West Yorkshire. It proposes to make improvements to railway infrastructure that would improve reliability and speed, as well as make space for a second train per hour in each direction between Sheffield and Huddersfield.

The project has been led by Kirklees Council, with support from Barnsley Council, Sheffield City Region Combined Authority and West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

An Outline Planning Application has been submitted to Sheffield City Council Planning Department (Reference number 21/02283/ OUT) to build five, three and four bedroomed houses towards the base of a steeply sloped green hillside on Haywood Lane in Deepcar.

Residents are extremely unhappy about this proposed development, and over 20 neighbours had a meeting at the site on 23rd June with Deepcar Councillor, Mark Whittaker, to voice their concerns. Several people at the meeting highlighted their worries about traffic and safety. They stated that the lane is used as a rat run, by cars, lorries and delivery vans, often speeding. Much of the road does not have any pavement, making it difficult for pedestrians, especially those with young children. Cars from another five houses will add at least ten more cars to the road and the construction traffic will effectively mean the road being closed.

Councillor Mark Whittaker, who is raising the matter at the Town Council, said ‘Haywood Lane is like a narrow country lane.

It simply cannot take any more traffic from this development’.

A local resident, Kirstin Lang, said ‘The wildlife we see, which includes dragonflies, frogs, foxes, hedgehogs, owls, bats, birds of prey and shrews, would all disappear with the removal of that green space to make way for a development this road does not need or want.’

Other concerns are about the structural suitability of the land. It is riddled with old mineworkings. Many were dug illegally in the eighteen hundreds and are therefore unmapped.

A Geological Survey has indicated that the land is moderately unstable with a chance of mine gas in the old workings, which could be potentially dangerous.

Many of the residents mentioned that with the reduction of trees and vegetation in this green space, the water run-off from the steep slope would turn Haywood Lane into even more of a water course in wet weather than it already is. Several of the houses were flooded in 2019 from run off from fields behind their houses during bad weather. The residents feel that this has been a green space for well over a hundred years and should continue to be so.

£7million of funding is planned to create 'Mobility Hubs' at all the local stations between Barnsley and Huddersfield, including Dodworth, Silkstone Common, and Penistone. This would mean better integration of rail, bus, and active travel, as well as upgrades to facilities such as live information boards and improved access to stations.

Welcoming the submission of the bid, Miriam Cates MP said, "This is fantastic opportunity for us to improve public transport connectivity in the communities served by the Penistone Line. One train per hour is simply not good enough for local people and businesses to see the railway as a viable alternative to the car.

Police find shed rammed with containers as probe into diesel theft in Sheffield is launched, report the Sheffield Star.

A police probe into the theft of diesel across Sheffield has been launched.

They seized a vehicle and have carried out interviews as part of the investigation.

The raid was carried out by the Sheffield North East neighbourhood policing team.

In a Facebook post, the team said: “The team executed a warrant in High Green in relation to the theft of and sale of diesel within the area as a result of information passed by the community.

“Whilst this might seem like victimless crime it can have an impact on both vehicle users and business by increasing their costs.

“People have been interviewed in relation to the matter and enquiries are ongoing.”

Anyone with information about the theft of diesel in the city should call South Yorkshire Police on 101.

12 year-old creates School leavers comic to raise money less prepared for charity for work Dermot Barker, aged 12, has created a 16 page comic which he is selling to raise funds for Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

The comic tells the story of the epic adventures of a character of Dermot’s creation, Mr. Polar, and his desire to holiday in Penistone!

Dermot, currently in year 7 at Penistone Grammar School created this over a period of weeks as his main hobby. Using his interest in Art and specifically, all things comic related.

He draws his inspiration from classic comics including ‘Beano’ but is also an avid fan of graphic novels.

Teachers at his school encouraged him to sell his comic in order to raise funds for Sheffield Children’s Hospital and sales are already looking healthy!

Charity founder shortlisted for national award The Stocksbridge-based founder of a rare disease charity has been shortlisted for a prestigious national nursing award.

Dr Iain Armstrong, chair of the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA UK) in Chapeltown, is a finalist in the ‘Innovations in your Specialty’ category of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Nursing Awards.

Iain, who also works as a nurse consultant at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, has been recognised for his work in creating ‘EmPHasis-10’ - a clinical tool that measures quality of life for people with the rare disease pulmonary hypertension.

Designed as a simple questionnaire 11 years ago, it is now used around the world to help doctors and nurses understand how patients affected by this condition are responding to treatment. The tool addresses healthcare in a more holistic way by asking questions about mental wellbeing and general health, as well as about specific symptoms of the disease.

Iain, who lives in Stocksbridge, will deliver a presentation about EmPHasis-10 to a specialist judging panel

in July and the winner will be announced later next month.

He said: “It was a wonderful surprise to have been nominated for this award and to be named as a finalist is the icing on the cake. I am passionate about ensuring quality of life is prioritised for people with pulmonary hypertension - especially given the severity of symptoms that are experienced by those with this condition.”

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a rare disease caused by the thickening and stiffening of the blood vessels supplying the lungs. The reduced blood flow makes it harder for the right side of the heart to pump blood through the arteries, which can result in heart failure.

The main symptom of PH is breathlessness, with fatigue, dizziness and chest pain common too. The condition is thought to affect just 8,000 people in the UK. Iain co-founded the Pulmonary Hypertension Association 21 years ago to support those living with the lifelimiting disease, and the charity now has over 4,500 members.

School leavers in Yorkshire are less prepared for work now than they were pre-pandemic, with less than 2 in 3 (59%) of pupils aged 16-18 believing that their school education has prepared them for a job according to a new survey from leading data analytics company Tableau.

In fact, the study found that 47% of pupils said the pandemic has impacted the skills they require for the world of work – such as data analysis and communication, more than their learning of academic subjects while only 33% of pupils in Yorkshire and the Humber have done any work experience.

41% of pupils in Yorkshire are also unaware of the key skills employers are looking for when hiring a candidate.

The research follows a recent Government report (Quantifying the UK Data Skills Gap (2021) that found digital skills have now become an essential entry requirement for twothirds of UK occupations. With

over two in three (68%) job postings requesting these skills outside of IT roles – and many in lower-skilled roles (DCMS and Burning Glass, 2019).

Yet in Yorkshire and the Humber, 41% of pupils are unaware of the importance of data skills for the UK job market and 48% have no experience learning data analysis.

The research also found that: • Pupils were far more confident in skills like communication (69%) and teamwork (82%) than with digital skills like data analysis (58%) and computer programming (35%) • 41% find data analysis a little scary • Only 44% of female pupils feel confident in their data analysis skills in comparison to 55% of male pupils

TRAXX Community Local Sport Market celebrates its 1st Birthday! CHAPELTOWN RBL RECORD BIG WIN Joe Long (pictured) scored a hat trick on his debut, as did winger Ben Stringer. Dave Millen struck a brace whilst making an assured debut for the club.

What a difference a year makes. This time last year Chapeltown Market was taken over by a group of local residents and so started the TRAXX Community Market project. Now 12 months on and three lockdowns, the first 17 markets have seen over 21k people attend, all done safely with strict COVID rules in place.

After the November lockdown ended, 3 Christmas markets were held under the guidance of Sheffield City Council. These markets were the most successful of all with over 38 local traders taking part over three dates.

When the team of volunteers took over in June 2020, the market was in need of much work. They set about repairing the stalls, installing new gutters and stall tops as well as the removal of the old dilapi-

dated cabins. The remaining cabin has been refurbished and a new roof installed with the help of funding from the Sheffield Town Trust. Just before Christmas, lights and stall ends were fitted along with the new Signal Box bar.

The market now even has its own Olive tree!

The market had planned to close for January and February, but due to a 3rd lockdown that was extended till Sat 17th April when it could reopen. This Saturday, the 3rd July will see the market celebrate its first birthday and what a year it's been.

We spent the morning visiting a number of locations in the Stocksbridge, East Ecclesfield and West Ecclesfield wards including the Traxx community market in

Chapeltown where we talked to Paul Swift, one of the founders.”

Traxx market is part of the Chapelgreen Community Enterprise set up by local residents to run and develop

the market. It was fantastic to see such a great project flourishing thanks to the support of local people and hard work and dedication of the traders and the team who founded it.

VHR were out in force on Wednesday when they had several teams competing in the inaugural Rother Valley Relay race in Rother Valley Country Park.

This event was superbly organised by the Hillsborough and Rivelin Running Club.

Over 150 teams took part on a lovely evening weatherwise and everyone seemed to enjoy the occasion.

There is more chance of the Indian variant spreading without restrictions so the only thing at risk is money not lives. Finally if we did get a third wave people would loose jobs and more people being poor means more people going to food banks, so the only people benefiting would be someone whose found a way to make money from food banks.

College’s Esports team finishes first Barnsley Sports Academy Esports (Electronic Sports) team, BSA Griffins, have finished top of the Rocket League British Esports Championships Spring Division 3.

The team excelled throughout the season under the guidance of Barnsley College’s Esports Coach, Thomas Wilford, winning all seven of their games earning an impressive 21 points. 3v3 Rocket League football with rocket-powered cars demands teamwork, communication and critical thinking expertise, problem solving skills and quick decision making.

Tyler Holmes, a Level 3 Esports student and captain of the team, said: “It’s great to have seen our hard work paying off, if we carry this momentum through to next season, I don’t see any reason why we can’t go even further. I’d love to be able to win some silverware for the College before I leave for uni-

versity, but I’ll definitely come back and support or even be a coach if the opportunity arises.”

Layton Ripley, a Level 3 Esports student and streamer, also said: “Rocket League is special because of the tournaments. When watching BSA Griffins there's always drama with the other squads. There are tense moments all the time. For example, the scoreline could be 3-3 and the next minute it’s a final goal decision to win the tournament. It’s always exciting when watching.”

Josh Ward, a Level 3 Esports student and streamer, added: “Barnsley College have helped by supporting our streaming page, supplying us with kits for the team and getting sponsors for us to shout out and have giveaways. I've improved on how to cope under pressure and how to communicate well to different audiences.”

The Lady Captain's Day at Stocksbridge Golf Club was a major success for Helen Moffett, the Lady Captain and the Golf Club. The weather was on good behaviour, the course was in excellent condition and there was an excellent turn out to support Helen. The Ladies Section (pictured) is in good health with current and old members coming together to support Helen on her big day. In addition to the Ladies competitions, Helen was keen to keep the tradition going for the Gents section to compete on the day as well. Helen then hosted a lively presentation event in the evening and despite the re-

strictions of the pandemic, there were 30 plus members in and outside the clubhouse to hear Helen make the presentations.

Helen said afterwards that the day "couldn't have gone better and I am delighted to have been supported by over 100 playing members through the day."

There were many winners in the Ladies competitions on the day, but the overall winner with the lowest net score was a certain Terri Moffett (33) with an excellent 66. Junior member and rising star, Charlotte Colley (5) was second with a net 68 and also the lowest gross score. Charlotte's round included an amazing 6

Nearly 80 Gents turned out to support the Lady Captain and play in the Lady Captain's Day Gents Stableford. Jason Battye (26) won with an excellent 42 points and started his round with a birdie on the 1st hole. Andy Hogg (21) the Club Champion from 2020, found good form to finish second with 41 points and Ian Sedgwick (12) was third with 40 points. A special mention goes to Peter Finney (3) who managed a hole in one on the 17th. That could have been an expensive ace with so many members enjoying a drink in the clubhouse.

Earlier in the week there was another Club Captain event, this time with the Dragons Section enjoying their Captain's awayday at Woolley park Golf Club.

Dave Stringer, the Dragons Captain, hosted the event with 28 golfers being very well looked after at the Golf Club. There were many individual and team prizes up for grabs, but the overall competition winner with the best net score was Charlie Dale (pictured with Dave Stringer) with an excellent net score of 69. Trevor Newton was second with a net 72 and Ian Batty third with a net 75. Dennis Haley won the best

stableford score with 36 points, Bob Mason was second with 34 and Doug Needham third with 33 points.

The Club League Team suffered a second away defeat at Lees Hall, losing by 5 points to 3.

Team Captain Liam O'Sullivan won and Danny Costello managed a half in their games. But the Finney brothers, Andrew and Peter, both lost their games.

Stocksbridge are still in promotion contention but will be keen to win their next away game at Tinsley in two weeks' time.

Finally, there were two Pro's Prizes through the week on the 24th and 27th June. Liam O'Sullivan (3) won convincingly on the 24th with a stableford score of 38 points, a round that included 5 birdies. Shaun Stapleton (12) and Danny Costello (3) both had 36 points, but Shaun won on countback. Paul Blake (8) won on the 27th with 40 points, the same score as Steve Cunningham (26), but with a better back 9. John Slodyczak (11) took third place with 39 points, pipping Dave Buxton (10) into fourth place with the same score but a better back 9.

nothing away. The Super Strikers number three Yameen was giving some hope back to them as he was beginning to get into his stride. The 1st XI needed his wicket.

Jack Newton, joined Grayson into the attack and the pair of them bowled with real control and the batsmen were struggling to get any momentum in the innings. Harry Hurst ‘stepped-up’ in the field running out the dangerous Yameen for a well made 58, a huge wicket! Grayson finished his spell with superb overs of 3-28 and Newton finished with 2-18, a great combination to restrict the score to 159 all out. Jake Vickers came back into the attack and picked up the last wicket to finish with figures of 2-23. Once again another really good fielding and bowling performance.

The response got off the worse possible start with Stocksbridge losing their ‘run machine’ Jack Newton in the second over. From there the beginning of the innings never really got going with some tight bowling from Super Strikers restricting the batsmen. Fellow opener, Matt Price fell with the score 20-2 and this caused a little collapse. Ben Cherry and Chris Pickford came and went without troubling the score. Stocksbridge were now in real trouble, floundering on 85-5 and needing a partnership. However, hope was not far away with Andrew Hirst leading with the bat, looking as composed as ever. He was joined by Harry Hurst and the pair began to turn the game back into Stocksbridge favour. Hurst departed for a well made 20 after a 53 partnership with Hurst. Liam Grayson joined Hirst at the crease but was removed shortly after, the score 104-6. Things went from bad to worse as Joe Hibbert then ran Hirst out for a brilliant 48, two shy of a well deserved half century. Steve Perry was removed the next ball and Stocksbridge were staring at defeat with the score 108-8. The 1st XI really needed a hero, Jake Vickers joined Hibbert at the crease. The pair began to bat with real positivity and confidence, turning good balls into 1s and 2s and then any bad ball dispatched to the boundary.

Super Strikers were beginning to look nervous as the Hibbert and Vickers partnership grew with confidence, they were steadily creeping towards the total, with only 2 wickets in hand.

Hibbert and Vickers were in full flow and the game was swinging massively towards the unbeaten home side. Vickers brought the scores level with a sumptious cover drive, but then, to add to the drama was removed next ball caught a long off for a brilliant and massively important 17. It was left to a calm Captain Hibbert to hit the winning runs and see them home with 1 wicket to spare.

Hibbert finished on an excellent 40 not out which was crucial for the chasing down the total. A brilliant and much needed 9th wicket partnership of 51 with Vickers got the 1st XI over the line with 3 overs to spare. The pair of them deserving a standing ovation from team mates and supporters. That books the 1st XI placed into the semis final, they travel to Sheffield University Staff next Saturday.
