Liberty Steel has announced it is set to sell its Stocksbridge plant as part of a restructuring following the collapse of its principal lender Greensill Capital.

As part of the restructuring Liberty is aiming to sell its aerospace and special alloys steel business in Stocksbridge.

The company said that, this was a "unique, high quality business servicing marquee customers in aerospace, auto and other highly engineered applications."

The is expected to enable Liberty to focus on developing its Rotherham plant, including its electric arc furnaces, into a two million tonnes recycled 'Greensteel' plant, one of the largest in Europe.

Local MP Miriam Cates told Look Local “I believe passionately that there is a strong future for steelmaking in Stocksbridge, and I will do ev-

erything I can to work with the Government and Liberty to find the right buyer.

I have had an urgent meeting with the Secretary of State for Business Kwasi Kwarteng, urging him to intervene to help find a suitable buyer for the site.

I have also asked that the Government consider providing financial assistance if necessary to make sure that steelmaking can continue until a buyer is found.

Stocksbridge Speciality Steels has unique capabilities that are of strategic importance to the whole of the UK. As the local Member of Parliament I will continue to make the case to Government to secure the future of UK steel.”

As a councillor for Stocksbridge and the Upper Don, I know first-hand the important role that Liberty Steel plays in the local economy and its significance to the community, as well as to the rest of the UK. The plant’s extensive contribution to the wider country cannot be underestimated as a major, high quality supplier to the aerospace industry, which is a fact that the Government must recognise and value by taking immediate steps to provide assurances that the Stocksbridge plant and workers will be protected going forwards.”

A formal sale process for Stocksbridge and its downstream plants, the narrow strip mill at Brinsworth and Performance Steels at West Bromwich will be launched shortly.

Man jailed for growing cannabis in a cellar A man has been sentenced to nine months behind bars after neighbourhood officers found him with a large scale cannabis factory in a cellar.

Florin Trifan, 30, of no fixed address, was detained after officers from the Walkley neighbourhood team executed a drugs warrant at a property in Minto Road, Hillsborough on 10 April.

On a search of the premises, officers found 254 cannabis plants in the loft and the cellar. These plants would be worth around £250,000 in street value.

PC Laura Thompson, investigating, said: "Cultivating cannabis on this scale funds the activities of organised criminals.

"We seized these plants, plus between eight and 10kg of packaged cannabis which was ready to sell. These profits would have likely gone on to fund violence, exploitation and have a knock on effect of causing fear in our communities.

"If you have concerns about the production and supply of drugs in your area, please tell us. We act on the information you provide and work tirelessly to put criminals behind bars, and stop them benefiting from putting drugs on our streets."

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone.

ESSENTIAL WORKS TO AFFECT SUPERTRAM SERVICES OVER BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND Essential engineering works at Hillsborough Corner will affect Supertram’s Blue and Yellow route services over the Bank Holiday weekend (29-31 May).

From the start of service (around 5am) on Saturday 29 May, until the end of service (around midnight) on Monday 31 May, Blue route trams will operate between Halfway and Cathedral or Shalesmoor only. Yellow route trams will operate between Meadowhall and Shalesmoor only. There will be no trams running between Malin Bridge/ Middlewood and Shalesmoor. Purple route and Tram Train services will operate as normal.

“Due to essential engineering works on the track at Hillsborough Corner, revised services will run on the Yellow and Blue routes during the Bank Holiday weekend. We’re reminding passengers to plan ahead and check before they travel.”, says SYPTE Director of Customer Services, Tim Taylor.

While the works are taking place, valid Supertram tickets will be accepted on Stagecoach and First buses running in affected areas. Hillsborough Interchange will remain open but stand H1 will be closed and its services allocated to another stand.

“As some lockdown restrictions have eased, it’s likely that there will be more people using public transport, travelling to meet family and friends, to shop, eat out or see a film. To travel as safely as possible on public transport, remember to follow government advice to regularly sanitise your hands, wear a face covering unless you are exempt and keep your distance where possible. If you can, open a window to increase ventilation during your journey”, added Tim. Some bus services in the area will also be affected by the works. Market becoming community Free school meals over hub once again in Chapeltown holiday For over 100 years Chapeltown in Sheffield has had a market at the centre of the community.

Until recently the market place was rundown and neglected with dwindling visitors and stallholders attending the Friday market.

In 2020 a group of local volunteers got together investing their own resources and revitalised the market place rebranding and launching TRAXX Market.

As a Community Market TRAXX believe its important to support local businesses with many stallholders being local food producers, small businesses and craft makers. Some stallholders attend every week with others attending once a month or so enabling TRAXX to offer something a little different each week to keep the market fresh and exciting. With the addition

of outdoor covered seating areas, delicious Street Food venues and drinks from the resident bar – The Signal Box, TRAXX Market has again become the community hub the market used to be.

But don’t just take our word for it, here’s what some of our visitors have said:“Great atmosphere, great little community market, loved it” “Well organised, great stalls, will definitely visit again”

As well as the weekly Saturday market, TRAXX has continued the weekly Friday Market and also plan to hold special food and shopping events throughout the year including a Christmas Market . If you’ve not visited yet, take a trip to TRAXX, you won’t be disappointed.

Sheffield City Council has announced that it will continue its commitment to support thousands of children and young people with free food vouchers during the May Spring Bank Holiday to stop “holiday hunger” as the coronavirus continues to impact families.

We recognise that many families continue to face financial difficulties because of the pandemic and in support we have committed to also providing vouchers for the children who are eligible for free school meals and those who access social care or Multi Agency Support Team, or get income assessed Early Years support over the upcoming May Spring Bank Holiday.

This forms part of our Covid-19 emergency response that also saw food vouchers issued to families during the October, Christmas, February and Easter holidays.

Families of 31,500 children in Sheffield will be receiving vouchers of £15 per child via a letter sent out next week with details enclosed on how and where to redeem the voucher. Families must activate their code within 3 months, or it will expire. Once the voucher has been claimed it will be valid for 12 months.

man lucky to be alive a year after freak gin accident

By Alex Grove, Yorkshire Live Paul Harrison was in a coma for 10 days and watched his palms 'fall off ' after a horrific accident at Sheffield Distillery, reports Yorkshire Live.

A dad has spoken for the first time after he almost died when nearly half his body was set on fire in a freak accident at a Sheffield gin distillery.

Paul Harrison was in a coma for almost two weeks with first and second degree burns after compressed alcohol at 85C squirted out of a still before being ignited by propane which caused serious scalding to his hands, arms, face and torso.

The 34-year-old, from Hoyland, Barnsley, was working in his role as a distiller at Sheffield Distillery, which is at the back of The Commerical pub in Chapeltown, Sheffield, at the time of the horrific incident on May 26, 2020.

Now, almost one year on from the accident, which could have killed him, Paul has revealed how he is still recovering and why he has bravely returned to work as a distiller.

"If I had been 10 years older I wouldn't be here and if I had been any shorter I wouldn't be here because I would have got it full frontal in the face," Paul said.

"If I had been any slimmer too I probably wouldn't be here so there was a benefit to being overweight.

"I feel very lucky and there was a 55 per cent chance of survival and 45 per cent the other way because of the extent of my injuries."

Paul, who lives with his wife Hannah and their children - including his youngest who had been born just weeks before the accident - was rushed to Sheffield's Northern General Hospital before being transferred to Pinderfields Hospital.

"Liquid doesn't like being compressed so it squirted out at 85C which scalded me first and then because we were using a propane burner that ignited it and the whole lot went up.

"Now the little still is no longer in use. That is a decorative item now and we just use the big still which poses no risk whatsoever."

Paul's hands were badly damaged in the fire and he has had to undergo "webbing work" after he lost the skin in between his fingers.

He said he watched his palms "fall off " in the aftermath of the fire and recalls his initial time in hospital as like having an "out of body experience" before he was put in a coma.

The Wakefield hospital has a specialist burns unit and Paul spent 10 weeks there receiving treatment, which included spending 10 days in a coma.

"It's going to take time and I don't know what my recovery time will be. I just know that I couldn't have asked for better care from the staff at Pinderfields.

Recalling the moment he was engulfed in flames, Paul said: "The botanicals got blocked at the top of the still which created a pressure buildup.

"From the doctors and nurses to housekeeping staff and occupational therapists - they have all been exceptional and I wouldn't be as far along as I am without their expertise."

Has anyone else round here been hearing the term ‘Pork Barrel Politics’? My understanding is that this unpleasant phrase would be a bit more familiar in Fox Valley Wisconsin than in our neck of the woods, and that it is a term for a government bribing particular areas to vote and go on voting for them. ‘Levelling up’ turns out to be rolling up with a barrel. Of pork? Anyway, with apologies to the growing number of Upper Don vegetarians, it would appear we are deep within on one such conveyor of pig meat.

Next month marks Bowel Cancer UK’s Walk Together fundraiser, a five-mile sponsored walk to show support for people undergoing treatment for bowel cancer, to remember loved ones and help stop others dying from the disease.

This year, we’re asking you to walk together on Saturday 12 June in your local area, with your household or in small socially distanced groups. By walking on this date, we’ll be united as one bowel cancer community, completing our walks on the same day. DIGGER DREAM COMES TRUE FOR SHEFFIELD SCHOOLBOY THANKS TO YORKSHIRE HOUSEBUILDER After Wharncliffe Primary School’s headmaster Mr Gaughan shared a picture of the model with Erris Homes, Archie was invited to see the diggers in action and meet with Erris Homes site manager Andy Rafton.

A digger-obsessed Sheffield schoolboy has had his dreams realised thanks to housebuilder Erris Homes.

Year 4 pupil Archie was recently invited to a demonstration of various machines on site at Erris Homes’ new housing development, Cloverleaf Court, after submitting a creative model of the construction site for his school’s egg decorating competition last month.

“Archie has been obsessed with diggers from a very young age, and as the site is so close to his school it made sense to base his design on the construction site at Cloverleaf Court,” explained mum Tracey. “As the development is on Main Road just next to Archie’s school, we pass the site every day and we always comment on the diggers or machinery on site.”

The model, inventively named ‘Eggscavation’, was based on Erris Homes’ development of 13 new family

“We were all blown away by Archie’s submission and we are thrilled to have been able to thank him in a meaningful way,” commented Andy. “It was a pleasure to meet with him and not only chat about the various machines in operation but also escort him around the site and warn him of the dangers of entering a construction site unsupervised.”

In addition to an escort around the site, Erris Homes also presented Archie with a £25 book voucher and a new toy digger to add to his collection.

“Archie had a great time visiting the site last week and is very grateful for his new dig-

ger which he has since added it to his ‘fleet!’” said Tracey.

“Hopefully one day he will be on a proper site with ‘big boy’s toys’ – until then, he will continue to dig up my garden!”

Commenting on Archie’s passion, Andy said: “It’s fantastic to see such enthusiasm from someone so young and I can only hope that Archie continues to pursue this interest in later life. He is more than welcome to approach us again in a few years – there is definitely a work experience position with his name on it when he is old enough!”

Joanne Wehrle, SYSRP manager, said: “In the UK over the last six years, more than 20 per cent of car drivers and passengers killed in

collisions were NOT wearing their seatbelt.

“Even on short familiar journeys, and at low speeds, not wearing a seatbelt can be a fatal decision.

“That’s why we want to remind people that just one click can change your future.”

Over the coming weeks, as part of daily business, officers from SYP’s Operational Support Unit will be clamping down on those not wearing a seatbelt and educating both drivers and passengers about the associated risks to themselves and others.

Barnsley College BEAT THE celebrates STREET Armed Forces Day Guards, said: “I think it’s really important that students get a clear understanding of what the Army offers.

There are a lot of misconceptions of what the Army does, be that through film and television, or video games. The Army has seven different career streams that cover combat, logistics and support, to HR and finance – and everything in between.

“My advice to anyone thinking of an Army career would be to take a look – there is no two days the same and I’ve made friends for life whilst gaining all sorts of qualifications and life experiences I wouldn’t have had the chance to get if I hadn’t joined.”

Barnsley College students were virtually joined by a range of representatives from the British Army, Royal Air Force (RAF) and Royal Marine Commandos, to celebrate and raise awareness of Armed Forces Day. The main activity of the day was ‘A conversation with the Armed Forces’ guest panellists who discussed everything military and answered questions posed by students. The panel featured Sergeant Jay McIlroy, RAF Motivational

Outreach Team; Mark Oxley, Royal Navy Career Advisor; Lance Sergeant Robert Greeno, British Army Recruitment Coordinator; Valerie Johnson, adult cadet at Army Cadet Force; and Pauline King, Assistant Regional Employer Engagement Director at Reserve Forces' and Cadets' Association for Yorkshire and The Humber.

Golfer’s Continue their Winning Streak The Gents League Team won their second match of the season against Tinsley Golf Club and with some style. In tricky wet, windy and cold conditions the home players won 3 out of the 4 matches and are well positioned to push for promotion from Division 5. The results were as follows: Peter Finney (3) won comfortably by 4 and 2; Danny Costello (3) won by 3 and 1; and Andrew Finney (0) won by a massive margin of 7 and 5. It was only team captain, Liam O'Sullivan (2) who lost by the margin of 4 and 2. Liam said afterwards "this is another great result and we are putting some good individual and team performances together."

The weather this week affected the mid-week competitions and for the members golfing got going in earnest on Saturday 22 May with the May monthly medal. Craig Allen (8) won with a comfortable four shot margin of victory. Craig scored a fantastic net 59, with 3 birdies on the front 9 and a further one on the back 9. Craig's gross score was an impressive 1 over par. Richard Grimmer (15) was second with a net 63 and Paul Blake (8) was third with a net 64. The same score as Andy Hogg (20), but with a better back 9. Despite the wet conditions underfoot, there was a strong field of nearly 70 players entering the competition.

The gents also competed on Sunday 23 May in a stableford Pro's Prize. Trevor Mosely (11) won comfortably with 41 points. Jonathan Bradley (17) was second with 39 points and Chris Walker (20) was third with 36 points.

The Ladies Section competed on the same day for their Jubilee Trophy. Liana O'Sullivan (6) won the strokeplay format by a clear 5 shot margin with a net 72. Helen Moffett (27), the Ladies Captain, was second with a net 77 and Hilja O'Sullivan (21) was third with a net 79.

On Saturday evening members of the Golf Club gathered to say a fond farewell to Anita Horsfield. Anita has been a very loyal servant

to the Club, working behind the bar for the last 19 years. The Directors arranged a small gathering on Saturday evening for Anita and she is pictured with the President of the Club, John Yeates, receiving a gift of thanks from the Club.

Club Captain, Alan Revell, has chosen The Chesterman Wing as his charity for the year.

There will be a variety of fund-raising activities that will include Club Members Matt Sedgwick and Steven Haigh repeating their 10- round challenge.

After an even opening 15 minutes, it was Legion who struck first. Adam Simpson picked out the run of hot shot Mitch Savage, who took one touch to control and nonchalantly lobbed the oncoming goalkeeper with his second touch.

RBL settled down and began to play some good stuff and doubled the lead when debutant Luca Defalco beat his man down the left hand side and picked out Savage again, to hit home his 7th

goal in just his 4th game for the club.

Southey pressed on in the second half in windy conditions, and after a number of changes got themselves back in the game with a well hit volley outside the area which flew in to the bottom corner.

Legion battled hard and stood up to an onslaught of attacks from Southey, who equalised with 5 minutes to spare. Another goal for Southey would have seen them take the 3

points and therefore win the tournament, but RBL held firm with goalkeeper Mark Newbould showing great composure in the final moments to ensure they finished top of the six team competition.

by Martin Webb On a perfect evening for football, 237 people attended this Yorkshire Trophy match. Wakefield are a relatively new team, 3 levels below Penistone Church in the football pyramid. This was the first competitive home match for Church since Saturday 19 December 2020, some 21 weeks before. It was definitely worth the wait.

Both teams played a high pressing game in the first half and Wakefield had much the better of the early exchanges with some awkward moments for the Church back four. Cameron Simpson picked up a nasty knock after 20 minutes and Callum Lee came on in his place at left back.

Whilst Church were settling their new formation Wakefield had a beautiful cross from the righthand side tipped onto the bar by Chris Snaith in the Church Goal.

Wakefield continued to press, but Church started to turn the match with a couple of lovely moves down the right-hand side, each

resulting in a tame effort on goal.

Again, Church found space on the right and a tricky low cross was spilled by the Wakefield keeper, Brett Lovell was offside when he missed to the left of goal with the rebound. At 34 minutes good Church tackling and then movement down the left resulted in a diagonal ball out to the right a flick on and Nicky Guest running dangerously in on goal. The defender cut across the back of him fouling Guest in the process.

Kieran Ryan scored the resulting Penalty low to the left of the keeper who nearly saved it, 1-0 to Church.

Church immediately pushed forward from the restart and Callum Lee had a half chance close in on goal, Wakefield cleared and moved the ball deftly down the middle of the park. The ball was then laid on to Harley Blankley who shot from around 25 yards out, high to the right of goal.

Chris Snaith had no chance as the ball rifled past him 1-1 Church responded immediately with a 5 pass move down the right, Jordan Coduri scoring a well-worked goal low to the left of goal. 2-1 to Church. Church also hit the bar at 39 minutes. 2-1 half-time score.

The second half opened briskly, Wakefield moved the ball well and had 30 yard shot easily saved at the end of a good move. However, Wakefield started to find the going much harder the longer the match went on. Nicky Guest and Jon Pugh made several openings with Kieran Ryan and it was Nicky Guest who bagged the third after 63 minutes with a low 18-yard shot to the left of goal. The ball bobbled in front of the outstretched keeper, who was unlucky with the bounce and the ball nestled in the net. 3-1 Church 5 minutes later following a foul, Church took the free kick on the left, the ball looped with pace into a crowded box and from 6 yards Kieran Ryan scored with his head low back across the keeper to left of goal. 4-1 Church.

The rest of the match was oneway traffic, with man of the match, Nicky Guest again testing the goalkeeper with a beautiful crisp shot low to the left of goal.

It was Nicky Guest who scored the final goal. This came from a series of firm passes, with an accurate 15-yard ball into Guest; on the move, he took the ball down on his chest, swivelled and vol-

leyed the ball into the left of goal from 10 yards. 5-1 Church Church did not add further to their score. Wakefield to their credit did not give up and played some lovely football too, they have some excellent players. It seemed that Church were better at moving the ball into dangerous areas and converting their chances.

Manager Duncan Richards told Look Local “ There were standout performances and standout goals, I thought Nicky Guest’s volley was outstanding, Kieran Ryan deserved his two goals and his performance was exceptional.

Tom Charlesworth’s second half was brilliant but as a team we were dominant and we deserved to win and it was nice to have a score line which reflected the performance. So it’s really pleasing to get that win.

The crowd had seen 6 goals, a couple of shots that hit the bar and some excellent football.

Penistone’s 1st game in the Yorkshire cup ended in a narrow defeat, 1-0 loss at Brighouse, but the big win against Wakefield looks likely to be enough for Church to progress in the competition.

Busy weekend for Penistone runners

On their busiest weekend for many months Penistone runners competed in several events across the north of England. They competed in a variety of disciplines including road racing, track and field, trail running and fell running. A team of athletes made the relatively short journey

to Cleckheaton in West Yorkshire to compete in the first fixture of the Northern Athletics Track and Field League. The team was made up of three ladies and seven men so everyone had to take on more events than usual. Making his debut for the club was Henry Parkin

who competed in the 100 metres (5th 11-9), 200 metres (5th 25-1) as well as the long jump (3rd 4.94 metres). Aged only 15 Henry put in some great performances against much older opposition. Two other Penistone youngsters Tom and James Fryers put in great performances in a variety of events. Tom set a new 800 metres club record in 2-26 whilst brother James broke the club record at 1,500 metres in 4-52. Heather Lindley and Shaun Dimelow were the busiest members of the team taking on seven events each. Shaun’s events included the 800 metres (2-24), 1,500 metres (5-06) and 5,000 metres (18-17) all of which were club records. Jill Scrivens did six events whilst Robin Clough and Paul Fryers each took on five events including the 3,000 metres steeplechase. Other athletes competing were Dawn Broom (3,000 metres and 1,500 metres),

Lee Hopwood (Javelin, High Jump and 100 metres) and John Broom (5,000 metres and men’s 4 x 400 metres relay).

New member Gareth Irvine and Over65 veteran runner Malcolm Rose competed in the Heaton Park 10k. Malcolm had a great run to claim first place in his age category in 42-24. Gareth finished in a time of 41-35 which placed him in seventh in the male over40 category.

In Northumberland, Andrew Heppenstall had a strong run at the Alnwick Castle Trail 10k. Andrew finished in a very quick time of 3713. In York, Charlie Skipper ran just over 17 minutes for 5k at the Even Splits series.

In the Lake District star fell runner Julie Darigala claimed first place in the ladies over50 category at the Fairfield Horseshoe race. Also on the fells, Sarah Walch competed in

the Half Tour of Bradwell finishing first over40 lady in 3-15-56.

Further results: Blackstone Edge fell race 6km 350m 36, Damian Kilpin 36-52; 55, Julie Darigala 38-46; 115, Sarah Walch 44-26; 124, Helen Wright Fine Artist 46-16; 169, Brent Lindsay 54-46.

Following a couple of bowling changes, Baslow formed 2 50+ partnerships to turn their innings around. Due to some poor bowling and fielding, Baslow recovered from 68-5 to 194-6.
