100 SONGS FOR CAPTAIN TOM
continued page 2
A retired headmaster has been inspired by the late national hero Captain Sir Tom Moore to raise money for a local drama and musical group. Yorkshire-born Capt Tom made headlines around the world when in the run-up to his 100th birthday he raised £32million for NHS charities during the pandemic by walking 100 lengths of his garden with the aid of a walking frame. Graham Elliott, chairman of Steel Valley Beacon Arts, will be in his Stocksbridge garden on Saturday (May 1st) and like Capt Tom has set a target of 100. But Graham, rather than striding out, will be singing most of 100 songs. During the marathon six-hour session, Beacon teenagers Zoe Senior and Charlie Taylor will sing a few songs with Graham. Piano accompaniment will be by local musician and composer Joe Shaw who studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and who has been involved in Beacon productions and Daniel Timmins, musical director of Beacon and Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir.
100 SONGS: Graham Elliot, 78, will be singing from his garden.
Local theatrical legend Margaret Moss, also a Beacon member, will be walking up and down the bowling green 100 times. And Beacon Youths Alex Holmes and Caitlin Peacock will walk over 100km over the next few days.
Pensitone 'LEGEND' passes away Tributes have been paid to a Penistone 'legend' and community hero who sadly died last Thursday.
“Steve was not just a massive part of the cricket club, but of the wider Penistone community and the Grammar school.'
Steve Reid, who passed away aged 70, was chairman of Penistone Cricket Club and described as a 'true gentleman' by the club.
Mr Reid's family are calling for friends and family to join them in lining Sheffield Road, the main road between Oxspring and Penistone, on May 6, at 10.30 to pay their respects to Mr Reid.
In a statement, the club said: “A true gentleman, legend and amazing guy will be sadly missed by us all.
