Wood Royd saved – now is the time to secure Hollin Busk Action groups leading the fight against the development of 85 dwellings on ‘Hollin Busk’ have welcomed news that nearby planning for 40 dwellings has been rejected.

Planning application for 40+ houses on land off Wood Royd Road, was last week rejected by the Planning Committee at Sheffield City Council.

Peter Morgan, the Chair of Friends of Hollin Busk “Whilst it is wonderful news that this planning application has been refused, it emphasises the importance of protecting our local green spaces. The development of Hollin Busk was rightly turned down last year, but the space continues to be threatened due to the applicant’s appeal to the Secretary of State to overturn the decision made by the local planning authority.

The Committee heard a number of speeches from those objecting to the proposal, including local residents and a wide range of issues presented to the Committee in order to help inform its deliberations.

Attention now turns to saving land on the former Royd Farm or ‘Hollin Busk’ where an ongoing battle, since 2017, is reaching its conclusion.

Developers last year appealed against Sheffield City Councils decision to refuse planning permission and the appeal is waiting to be heard.

Upper Don Action Group, has been fighting since 2013 to protect Sheffield’s unspoilt countryside, submitted a counter case, on 5th March to the Planning Inspectorate, arguing that the developer's appeal should be refused.

John Hesketh, UDAG Chairman andformer chairman of Sheffield Planning committee,

told Look Local “it’s outrageous that a new 85-dwelling ‘village’ is being planned for this unspoilt moorland location close to the historic village of Bolsterstone. It’s hard not to see this and yet another example of treating the Upper Don valley as a dumping ground.

Can anyone imagine such a new ‘village’ being even considered in the countryside around Dore or Fulwood?”

John continued “UDAG is not convinced that the Royd Farm/Hollin Busk proposal would in fact make a serious contribution to Sheffield’s affordable housing supply. Properties at this location would be sold at a premium, as local estate agents have advised us. This is a desirable location next to the Green Belt and only a short walk from a National Park.”

“Friends of Hollin Busk strongly believe that the Planning Inspectorate must uphold the decision, and safeguard this treasured local space. However, will only happen if the Inspector understands the concerns felt by local people about this issue. We would encourage everyone who has concerns about the development of this key local site to make their views known to the Planning Inspector.”

The developers appeal is waiting to be heard and a decision is expected sometime this year.

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone.

Stocksbridge man loses an incredible 10 stone My reasoning for wanting to lose the weight was because I have four children and a partner and I wanted to be around forever for them, especially our 7 year old son who is autistic and has complex learning difficulties.

I completely changed my diet and paid attention to my portion sizes. No alcohol, no chocolate, no crisps and definitely no fried food! I also had an excuse to get out and exercise as we had just got our new puppy, Boris, our black cockapoo and he needed walking.

Over this past year, it has been incredibly challenging having to live through lockdowns and restrictions.

For many the lack of their usual regular leisure / sporting activities has seen

a few extra pounds gained around the waist. But not for one local dad-offour who has shed an incredible 10 stone over the past 6 months. Here’s his incredible inspiring story.

Residential Property Expert Returns To South Yorkshire Roots To Head Up Linley & Simpson's Sheffield Branch

A residential property expert has returned to her South Yorkshire heartland to head up Linley & Simpson’s new Sheffield branch.

The move for Penistone-born Kelly Boot comes after the regional sales and lettings specialist recently acquired two long-established independent city letting agents - Lewis Wadsworth and Sheffield Residential.

Kelly, who will be based with her team of seven in the former city centre offices of Lewis Wadsworth in Queen Street, began her career in the property sector as an administrator with a Wath-uponDearne lettings agent.

After becoming its manager and leading a small team, she moved to a bigger firm, first as a sales negotiator then progressing to lettings manager.

Her previous role before joining Linley & Simpson was as an executive branch manager with a national estate agent chain in Leeds city centre, where she managed a team of nine and looked after large portfolio landlords and investors.

Kelly said: “Whilst it may only have been two years since I last worked in South Yorkshire, it’s great to be back, and even better to be heading up Linley & Simpson’s Sheffield branch.

Re: All Lane Running (ALR) smart motorways I write as the Police and Crime Commissioner for South Yorkshire where the existence of a stretch of ALR smart motorway on the M1, with no hard shoulder, is causing real and growing anxiety. We do not believe we are being listened to or having our concerns adequately addressed by either the Department of Transport or Highways England.

I write to you, therefore, to urge you and your committee to put yourselves in our shoes and hear what we are saying. Our anxieties have increased following the comments of two coroners charged with conducting inquests into the deaths of three people whose vehicles were struck while stationary on the motorway. One coroner, as you will know, has concluded that the lack of a hard shoulder contributed towards the deaths of Jason Mercer and Alexandru Murgeanu and the other has asked South Yorkshire police to consider whether the death of Nardis Begum warrants corporate manslaughter charges being brought against Highways England.

Whatever follows from these actions, the very fact that the coroners are saying these things causes us deep concerns. We also note that despite the Department of Transport and Highways England assuring us that smart motorways are ‘as safe as, if not safer than, conventional motorways’, this is not because hard shoulders have been removed –that defies reason -but because ALR have overhead gantries and the ability to regulate traffic speed and flow. It is disingenuous to say or infer that it is because ALR have no hard shoulder that they have better safety records. We note that despite the assurances about these motorways being as safe if not safer, the Department and Highways England still feel the need to do further remedial work –at some cost -to try to make them ‘safer’. None of this inspires any confidence but rather adds to the concerns. We also have to say that many drivers tell us that they feel on edge when they reach ALR sections. People need to feel safe as well as be safe, and by that test, ALR motorways also fail.

They increase anxiety. And finally, the sheer cost of education/marketing tells us that something is very wrong if we need such ongoing campaigns in the hope that this will reduce the anxiety and confusion that drivers often feel when they pass along ALR.

Census Day: Sunday 21st March The census is a once-in-a-decade survey which gives the government the most accurate record of all the people and households in England and Wales. It has been carried out every decade since 1801 (apart from 1941). Just think, there will be people not yet born who will be looking up the information which we provide!

The difference this time round is that it there is encouragement to complete it online. To that end, most of us will have received a letter containing an access code. For everyone unhappy or unable to complete online a paper alternative is offered : 0800 141 2021 or www.census.gov.uk. And if you physically can't complete the survey, these contact details will help you too.

Completing the census is a legal requirement but personal records will be locked away for 100 years. We are all required to complete it this Sunday or soon afterwards. The argument is that the government can make better decisions if it is armed with the facts.

It remains my view that if a vehicle, for whatever reason, stops in a live lane because there is no hard shoulder and a refuge is too far away, this is inherently dangerous. Birds of Paradise Surprised to see a Reed bunting in the garden and watch the Barn owl on the moors recently Im sectretly chuffed (pun not intended!) Some call them weeds, a real mess and lazy field management but more are seeing the benefit of allowing nature to have more room to grow, naturally.

Rewilding is almost trendy. I remember from school many moons ago the cycle of life not really understanding the significance. Recently we seem to have forgotten or lost touch with the beauty and awesomeness of the world around us. Nature has been abused and used for our luxuries and western power but is it fighting back? The virus could be a reminder of our own human part in the cycle of life. Nature doesn’t need to do very much to cause us humans discomfort and sometimes terror with just a little more rain, snow or heat than usual. We British love the weather!!

But im tentatively proud of what we are doing on the farm here. Allowing the grass to grow has resulted on hundreds more voles and field mice to flourish creating vital nurishment for owls and stoats, a crucial links in the broken chain of life.

Small things make big differences like smoots in walls (once commom) and brambles for cover. (and blackberries!) Another link on the nearby moors are the flies and moths, brought wonderfully by the roaming ruminating cows (poo)recently, the food so loved by birds, many of which are flocking back to the area. Shhh! Keep it quiet. Sadly we are not used to these changes and some during lockdown havent seen the importance of keeping their beloved dogs under control when there are ground nesting birds making hay! We need to remind ourselves and learn about the whole of life once again. Perhaps we should try turning the TV or game off and see for ourselves. Walk more, look and listen to the beauty all around us, volunteer and meet others, share your wild and wonderful life! We are so fortunate to live with such suroundings which only thirty or so years ago were polluted and poisoned right across the whole valley. Like Old moor and other regenerated coal pit areas lets turn Stocksbridge and Deepcar into a wildlife haven, a huge nature paradise for all to learn, grow and flourish. How about a personal challenge then? “What should life be?” “Why isnt it?” And “how do we repair it?”

Greater flooding protection for Deepcar Sheffield City Council have confirmed that further investment is being made available for flood defences in Clough Dyke, Deepcar.

Clough Dyke is an open watercourse that runs through woodland in Deepcar before entering a culverted section. In periods of prolonged or intensive rainfall the water can build-up behind blockages, resulting in deep water in the woodland.

This presents a potential risk of flooding to nearby properties.

Residents raised this issue with Local Labour councillor Julie Grocutt and in response Sheffield City Council and the

After a week of uncertainty surrounding Liberty Steel with news that its biggest lender, Greensill Bank had gone into administration, local MP Miriam Cates issued the following statement.

“I’ve been informed by the Department for Business that Secretary of State Kwasi Kwarteng had a constructive meeting yesterday evening with Community, GMB and Unite union leaders to discuss the ongoing situation at Liberty Steel.

Mr Kwarteng assured the Unions that he is continuing to monitor developments very closely and will work to build a strong, sustainable steel sector in the UK. Stocksbridge Speciality Steels is an asset of national importance and over the coming days I will be continuing to urge the Government to do everything possible to protect jobs and livelihoods and make sure that there is a great future for steel in Stocksbridge.”

Stocksbridge Golf Club Welcomes it’s New Captain Stocksbridge and District Golf Club welcomed it’s new Captain, Alan Revill, at the start of March. Alan takes over the captaincy from Brian Montgomery, but unfortunately because of the current restrictions won’t be able to have the ceremonial handover until later in the year.

Alan has been a member for 30 years at the club and has already said that he is keen take on the role. He will have the dependable support of Marie, his wife and their family of 5 children and 6 grandchildren, with the many duties he will have in the coming year.

Alan attended his first meeting with the Club’s Directors and confirmed that his charity for the year will be the Chesterman Unit at the Northern General Hospital. Alan has a personal reason for choosing this worthy cause, having had heart problems a few years ago.

As a result of two heart attacks he underwent a triple bypass at the Chesterman Unit, which thankfully was a complete success. After his surgery one of the best parts of his rehabilitation was getting back onto the golf course

and with hills of Stocksbridge that speeded up his recovery. Alan said: “I am now in a fortunate position where I have been offered the captaincy and have a chance to give something back to my chosen charity, the Chesterman Unit.” Alan is busy planning the fund raising events and activities that will help him raise as much money as he can over the next 12 months. The centre piece will be the Club’s charity day in the summer and more details of this will be announced in the near future.

But one of the things that Alan is depending on is the generosity of Stocksbridge residents as well as Club members: “If any of the good people of Stocksbridge can relate to my story I would welcome you making a donation.”

The Club’s Lady Captain of 2020, Helen Moffett, has also agreed to do a second year in office. The Directors were delighted to hear Helen’s confirmation at their meeting last week. Chairman of the Directors, Frank Milnes, said: “I am delighted that Helen has agreed to continue. Last year, with all the restrictions, was a difficult year for both our Captains

and I am hopeful that 2021 will be much better.” Helen has chosen the Sheffield Hospital’s Dementia Charity as her chosen charity.

Hello! I hope you have had a good month. This week schools return as we head back towards a bit of normality. I’m sure there are lots of parents out there who are relieved that they don’t have to be home school teachers anymore; but also sad that their precious shared time is coming to an end. For some, the time at home has been hard work and stressful, but it has also been a blessing for many. I guess there are always two sides to every coin. With a return to normality, we can start to make the plans that we have wanted to make for nearly a year. I imagine, like me, you have been planning what to do in the upcoming months.

Trips to see the family, family coming to see you, maybe a break or two in the UK or abroad? Hopefully, this has filled you with positivity after what has been a tough year. As we return to normal life and hope that everything goes in the right direction,

we need to remember to take with us the things that we have found relaxing and enjoyed doing. If you have taken up a hobby, continue it. If you have started walking, continue it. Although I’m sure, many of you may have done enough walking to last a lifetime. As the rush of life flows back in, it is still extremely important to set time aside to focus on ourselves. As we get caught back up in the rat race of doing this and doing that, remember to make time to chill out and relax. If you can find half an hour to an hour a day to do something you find relaxing or enjoy doing, that should help you destress. Whether you do puzzles, a quiz, go for a run, enjoy a hot bath with candles and Epsom salts, do some gardening, play games, watch Netflix or something else. Remember to make time to relax, as finding peace in your day and week is vital to maintaining positive mental health. If you feel anxious

about any of your lifestyle changes, then remember to speak to someone about how you are feeling. A problem shared is always a problem halved, so do not keep your worries or fears bottled up inside. Here’s hoping the return of schools goes well and that next month’s article will be filled with even more joy.

Let’s all look forward to the opening of more shops, barbers, hairdressers and more.

I never thought I would be so excited to get a proper haircut and go to the gym.

But most importantly, like everyone, I can’t wait to see my family members that I have missed for months on end. Here’s to a good March and an even better April, May, June and so on.

TIGERS MAKE WRIGHT MOVE FOR JAMES JAMES Wright is joining some familiar faces after signing for Sheffield.

Wright, who is coming out of retirement for the 2021 season, is keen to make an impact and in the Premiership after five years out of competitive racing.

He will be reunited with former team mate Troy Batchelor and will be racing for Simon Stead, who he was alongside at Workington.

Said Wright: “They’ve built a strong team and I know a few of the lads well. I rode with Troy at Swindon before - we’re a similar age and have always got on well over the years.

“I’m also looking forward to working with Steady again. I started my career at Workington and Simon was a massive help to me there - he gave me an engine which really kick-started my career and I’ll always be grateful for that.

“My brother (Charles Wright) has been a massive help to me too. He rode at Sheffield in 2018 and had nothing but great things to say about the club. That really sealed the deal for me and has made me even more excited to be a part of their step up to the Premiership.”

Wright has previous top flight experience with Belle Vue, Swindon and Birmingham and can’t wait to get going at Owlerton.

“I can’t wait to meet all the Sheffield fans and finally get my career back up and running. I’ve never been so eager and riding in two leagues will help me immensely.

“I’d also like to send a huge thank you to all my sponsors. Without them there’s no way this would all be possible, I’m so grateful.

“It’s a great opportunity for me and if I’m being honest, a very unexpected one.

“It was always my intention to double-up when announcing my return to the sport but I didn’t expect the call to come so early.

I thought maybe a couple months into the season if I performed well in the Championship then I might get my chance then.

“Owlerton is a great race track and one I’ve always enjoyed riding. I always seem to score well there too and I always remember riding on the old training track there early on in my career.”

Wright is the penultimate name in the lineup alongside Batchelor, Jack Holder, Adam Ellis, Kyle Howarth and Josh Bates which means Josh Grajczonek won’t be returning to Britain.
