Work starts on first phase of leisure centre improvements WORK got underway this week on major improvements to the Stocksbridge Leisure Centre and Oxley Park as part of an investment in the area through the Towns Fund project.

The Government announced in September last year that the town would receive an additional £500,000 as part of the Towns Fund programme to promote regeneration and economic development.

The investment will be used to create an outdoor seating and play area which will link the new Stocksbridge Leisure Centre café to Oxley Park. There will also be improvements to access routes and landscaping and an upgrade to the car and cycle parking at the centre.

Work started on the project this week with contractors EC Surfacing Ltd and Kompan Ltd moving on to site – the work is expected to take three months to complete.

This investment comes as the wider ambitious bid for up to £25 million of funding to transform the local area has been submitted to the Government for approval.

As well as a second phase of improvements to the Leisure Centre the wide range of projects outlined in the Towns Fund bid also includes: • Improvements to walking and cycle trails • A major redevelopment of part of Manchester Road including a new library and community facilities • Public realm improvements to the Manchester

Road area as well as better links to other parts of the town • A post-16 hub at Stocksbridge High School • A new local community bus network The Towns Fund Board is cochaired by Mark Dransfield, managing director of Dransfield Properties and the local MP Miriam Cates, and is made up of stakeholders and local business representatives as well as officers from Sheffield City Council and Cllr Julie Grocutt representing both Sheffield City Council and Stocksbridge Town Council.

The bid is aimed at prioritising investment which will attract new businesses and job opportunities to the town and responds to the key issues and concerns that local residents raised about connectivity, opportunities and regeneration through the public consultation process.

Graham Silverwood, from the Community Leisure Centre Trust and Chair of the Town’s Fund Health and Leisure Sub Committee, said: “We are delighted to see work started on this project at the Leisure Centre so soon.

“We would like to thank everyone who has helped to get these fantastic improvements from the concept stage to the contactors starting on site this month in such a short amount of time. This project is going to make a huge difference to the whole community.”

The bid for £25 million investment was submitted at the end of January and the board expect to have an update on the outcome later in the spring.

Mark Dransfield said: “The Towns Fund board has submitted an extremely strong bid which will make a huge differ-

ence to the town and deliver a number of truly transformational projects in Stocksbridge.”

The Friends of Oxley Park have assisted with volunteer work and consultation for the Leisure Centre project and the tree planting in the new playground will be carried out by local charity Steel Valley Project.

Have your say on plans for new shared-use cycle lane in Hillsborough ONLINE consultation events took place this week on proposals for a new shared-use cycle lane for bikes and pedestrians, running from Herries Road to Wardsend.

The route would be the first phase of the project, with hopes to further extend the route through Club Mill Road to Hillfoot bridge in the future, creating a riverside journey that can be enjoyed by all. The scheme will be funded by Sheffield City Council and SUSTRANS, a national walking and cycling charity. Work is expected to begin in the summer if plans are approved.

The new route is in close proximity to Parkwood Springs and is part of the Upper Don Trail which runs from Sheffield City Centre towards Stocksbridge and into the Peak District.

Councillor Julie Grocutt, Cabinet Member for Transport and Development at Sheffield City Council, said: “One of the most important things we can do to encourage more people to get out for a bike ride or a walk is to make it as easy and accessible as possible, and creating designated routes for cyclists and pedestrians is a vital part of that. is already well known as a fantastic green space with great views across the city and this new route will enhance the area further and attract more people to make the most of the scenery on their doorstep.

Bob Johnson, Hillsborough Councillor and Leader of Sheffield City Council said: “This could be great news for Hillsborough and make a real impact.

“I am absolutely committed to promoting active travel and to delivering a more sustainable Sheffield.

But promoting active travel is about more than addressing the Climate Emergency, it is also about making the city a great place to get about with less congestion and cleaner air.

“Hillsborough residents will now have the opportunity to let the council know their views, and I’m looking forward to hearing what people think and we will make sure the scheme responds to local opinions.”

Improvement plans for Stannington Park IMPROVEMENTS will be made at Stannington park to address drainage issues and provide new play equipment, following the recent bouts of bad weather which have left the ground in poor conditions for play.

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone.

#ThankTwo Campaign launches and High Green Scouts seek new volunteers LIKE most community groups across the country, the 105th Sheffield (High Green) Scout Group was forced to close face-to-face meetings for the majority of 2020. However, the Beaver, Cub and Scout Leaders at High Green did not abandon their young people, they all rose to the challenge of holding Zoom meetings with their members.

This was, and still is, no mean feat as many of the leaders are key workers and continue to balance home schooling and the day to day challenges of living with Covid 19.

The leaders have been incredibly inventive, coming up with all sorts of ideas to keep their young people engaged online, such as holding craft and home baking sessions.

The leaders have received some amazing feedback from parents and carers who are delighted that their children have had the opportunity to meet up with their friends in a safe environment - so important for young people’s mental health during these difficult times.

Rowena Morrisey, Chairperson of the Scout Group told Look Local: “The truth is that High Green Scout Group is thriving, and whilst it has a great set of volunteers, we need more volunteers to help more young people join us.

You don’t need to be Bear Grylls. You don’t need to have been a Scout when you were younger. You don’t even need to know how to put up a tent.

“Our door is open to people of all ages, genders, races and backgrounds, and we’re only able to change lives because people like you lend a hand. We’re talking about tea makers, tidy-uppers and skill sharers.

“We’re talking about mini bus drivers and first aiders.

We’re talking about students who want to boost their CV, and parents who volunteer so they can spend more time together as a family.

Victim almost loses £11,000 to courier fraud SOUTH Yorkshire Police is warning people to be aware of courier fraudsters operating in our force area after a victim almost handed over thousands of pounds to a criminal.

The victim, in Sheffield, was targeted by fraudsters on February 12 and nearly lost more than £11,000.

The suspects led the victim to believe they were from New Scotland Yard and attended three banks to withdraw separate amounts of money.

SADLY, due to the continuing restrictions, organisers of the Wortley Rotary Vintage Vehicle Rally have unfortunately decided that they will be unable to run the event again this year.

They are already making plans to hold some alternative events

to raise funds which they can use to help other charitable organisation, locally, nationally and internationally.

These will be publicised as soon as further information is available, and it is hoped that some of you will support these efforts.

Last year, Wortley Rotary Club managed to raise over £5,000 by holding two raffles instead of their two main annual events and some of that money has already gone to Sheffield Children’s Hospital. It is hoped the rally will be back next year.

The suspects used a false story to get past the security checks but officers quickly intervened. The victim is now being safeguarded.

Courier fraud involves victims receiving a phone call

from a criminal pretending to be from the police or another official organisation such as a bank.

The fraudster claims there is an issue with the victim’s bank account, or requests the victim’s help in an ongoing bank or police investigation.

Victims - many of whom are elderly or vulnerable - are then asked to withdraw a large sum of money which will be collected by a courier for ‘evidence’. Other versions of the scam have previously seen victims told to withdraw large amounts of foreign currency, or purchase high value items such as watches.

DS Sam Erabadda, from the force’s fraud co-ordination team, said: “Victims

of courier fraud tend to be elderly or vulnerable and it can be very distressing for them to realise that someone has exploited their goodwill in this way.

“Following today’s incident, I’d ask everybody to be extremely suspicious of unsolicited phone calls from your bank or the police - and don’t think it is authentic simply because the person on the other end of the phone knows basic personal details about you such as your name or address.

“If you think you are on the phone to a fraudster, hang up the phone straightaway and then call back your bank, or the police, on a different phone line or mobile, on a trusted

number. If you can’t use a different phone, wait at least 30 minutes before calling in case the fraudster has stayed on the line.

“Please make sure you share this information with your elderly or vulnerable loved ones.”

Reports of courier fraud should be made to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or online at www.actionfraud. police.uk. If somebody has turned up at your home to collect money, a bank card or other valuables from you, call 999.

“It’s an exciting time for me to be going back there with the signing of Troy Batchelor, he’s a class act, and I’m looking forward to linking up with Simon Stead as manager, another rider I admired greatly when I was a kid.

Barnsley racer Bates, a title winner with his local club in 2017, has returned as part of the new scheme introduced to have British riders with limited experience in each professional side.

“I just can’t wait for the tapes to go up. Nobody will hold me back, I’m going for it in a big way!”

He joins Troy Batchelor, Jack Holder and Kyle Howarth in the Tru Plant Tigers side – and he’s delighted.

Co-promoter Damien Bates said: “We are pleased to welcome Josh back, it’s a big opportunity for him and I’m sure he will take it with both hands.

“I told my uncles, Damien and Marc, that I wanted to be back with Sheffield one day, that was my dream,” he said.

“Now that dream has come true and I’m absolutely over the moon about it, I just can’t wait to get back racing around Owlerton.

“He made it very clear to us he didn’t see his time ended for good with us, he always wanted to be back at Sheffield at some stage.

“I’ve always said throughout my career that Owlerton has been my favourite track and I can promise everyone at Sheffield I’ll be giving it my very best as I always do.

“As part of the rising star scheme Josh fits the bill for our team and we are sure he can give us strength at the lower end of the team.
