Residential areas in Hillsborough to become 20 MPH zones HILLSBOROUGH streets are set to become safer with 20mph speed limits rolled out to large parts of the area. Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet approved the plans on Wednesday, and work is set to be completed within the next couple of months. Further funding has also been provided to extend the scheme to more streets in Hillsborough than initially planned. Speaking about the scheme, Hillsborough Labour Councillor and leader of the council Bob Johnson stated: “I’m know that residents have been asking for these changes and I’m delighted that

we’re able to respond in this way.

“The benefits of safer roads cannot be understated and there is clear evidence about the reduction in, and severity of, accidents in 20 mph zones. This will also help improve local air quality – which is a crucial health benefit to residents. “20mph in residential areas will be the norm - but there will some exceptions for main roads such as Dykes Hall Road and Holme Lane. “We want to ensure people can get to where they need to be, but safely and to the benefit of local residents

On signing of the decision to implement, Councillor Julie Grocutt, Labour’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Development, added: “We are absolutely committed to establishing 20mph as the maximum speed for residential areas throughout Sheffield.

“Reducing speeds in residential areas makes more pleasant places for people to live - especially for children and elderly residents – and encourages more people to cycle and walk. Labour councillors want to see 20 mile per hour zones throughout residential areas in the city where local residents want them, and we are committed to this aim.

POLICE APPEAL FOR DASH-CAM FOOTAGE OF UNUSUAL BIKE THEFT IF you were driving or cycling on Rivelin Valley Road near the fire station on Saturday January 16 at around 7pm and have a dash-cam or helmet camera, South Yorkshire Police are asking you to check your footage after an unusual bike theft. Between 6.15pm and 7.45pm, the Cube e-bicycle in this picture was stolen by thieves who had attached their own D-lock preventing the owner from moving his own bike. When the owner went to find tools to cut off the lock, the thieves returned and cut off both locks and stole the bike. Inspector Smith said: “We would also love to hear from anyone out walking who might recognise the bike in the picture and may have seen who stole it. If you find on returning to your bike that someone has attached an additional lock please call 999 as this is a crime in action someone has appropriated your bike and by treating it their own they have technically already stolen it, or at least attempted to. “Do not leave the bike, wait with it until officers arrive to help. Keep your phone with you and in camera mode so that if anyone turns up to try and steal it you can video them - call the police while the video is still running so

that we can use the footage later to identify anyone who turns up. “We wouldn’t recommend attempting a citizen’s arrest or confronting the thief directly, but if you are able to film them from a distance this may discourage them from coming and finishing the job. Officers would be there as soon as possible to arrest suspects. “Try to park your bike in places where there is CCTV or that is well lit and where people can see what is happening to it. “We recommend fitting two types of lock, both a D-lock and a cable lock (around the wheels) as many thieves come with only the tools to tackle one type of lock. With determined thieves like these it might not be enough, but make it as difficult as you can. “If you have an e-bike, immobilise it and make it less attractive by removing the battery if you’re going to be away from it for some time. “If you have any information about the people responsible for this crime please get in touch with us by DM, or send information anonymously to Crimestoppers via their website at https://crimestoppers-uk.org/”

Sheffield Arena opens as NHS COVID-19 Vaccination Centre HUSBAND and wife, Colin, aged 78, and Rita, aged 79, Moss from Barnsley were among the first people to get their COVID19 vaccination at the new NHS Vaccination Centre within Sheffield Arena when it opened at 10am on Monday January 25. The Arena venue is in addition to over 30 primary care sites across the region where GPs and their teams are already working around the clock vaccinating some of the region’s most vulnerable residents. In the first instance people aged 75 and over within a 45 minute drive of the Arena will receive a letter from the national NHS booking service inviting them to either book a vaccination at the arena or if they already have an appointment at their local GP vaccination hub they can disregard the letter. Equally if it is more convenient to wait and have their vaccination at their local primary care centre then individuals can also choose not to book at the Arena. The Arena will be open seven days a week and will be run by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals on behalf of the NHS national vaccination programme. Rita said: “Colin and I feel really lucky to be getting our vaccines and I’ve never looked forward to getting an injection in my arm as much as I have over the past few days even though I don’t like needles. “I would definitely encourage others to have their jab when it’s their turn; not just to save themselves, but to save others from this horrible virus too. The vaccine is a brilliant, brilliant thing. It will give us peace of mind and make us feel a lot safer but we won’t be changing what we do or who we see in the short term because we know how important it is to keep following the guidelines until more people have been vaccinated. I take my hat off to everyone who has helped us get to this point.”

and volunteers are pulling out all the stops to deliver the vaccination programme as quickly as we can across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw. It is tribute to their hard work that we have already vaccinated thousands of our most vulnerable residents.

“The Arena opening today is another step forward in rolling out the vaccination programme and it has been fantastic to see people like Rita and Colin getting their vaccinations and being protected against this awful Dr Jennifer Hill, Medical Director (Opera- virus. tions) at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: “GPs, nurses, pharma- “We are asking people to help us by not turncists and countless other NHS staff, partners ing up at the Arena unless they have an ap-

pointment as we cannot vaccinate people ad hoc. The teams at the arena, at our hospitals or GP surgeries cannot make appointments for the Arena and so by calling or turning up turning up it will simply take time away from the staff who are vaccinating and that is the last thing anyone wants to happen.” “As well as NHS colleagues, I would also like to thank the team at the Arena who have been simply amazing. First they supported us to create a drive through blood testing service so that our most vulnerable patients could still have their blood tests safely and now they

have been instrumental in our planning for the vaccination programme roll out.” Finally a plea that over these next few months, even if you have had your vaccine, you must continue to wash your hands regularly, limit contact with other people unless it is essential and wear a mask when required. Our hospitals are fuller than ever before with patients who have COVID-19 and if we are to get control of this awful virus we need everyone to do all they can to limit transmission to others whilst we continue to vaccinate the population.”

Volunteering Matters - Sporting Chance NEVER has the power and influence of volunteering been more influential in local communities than it is right now. At last, those who are most in need, or those in isolation or suffering from loneliness or mental health issues are being engaged and assisted. But there is still lots of work to be done and there are still people who cannot access services due to lack of awareness or lack of I.T. skills. Many free hours of time have been given up by volunteers in numerous organisations across Sheffield and nationally and we cannot thank everyone of them enough for making a difference. Volunteering Matters (A National Charity) have been involved in volunteer recruitment

on the National Journey Makers Programme (safe travel advice) on the Sporting Chance Scheme across Sheffield and Rotherham and locally in Stocksbridge. Although the project names sounds like they only do sport, they do a lot more than that and have numerous engagement and support systems. Last year they began a pilot programme for a pen pals letter writing scheme, which due to its success is now being rolled out nationally. It was aimed particularly at those who were unsure or unable to join online activities. Those that benefitted were very appreciative. Craig said, “It’s nice to know that someone out there is thinking about me,” Wallace aged 92 remarked, “I’ve hardly been out of the house in months, I was sent a gift at Christmas and also got a phone call on Christmas eve from my pen pal which was such a nice surprise.”

A spokesperson for Volunteering Matters said: “We are now taking on more people who wish to receive a letter as well as a new recruitment drive for more volunteer letter writers. As a volunteer letter writer, you would write on a monthly basis to one or more recipients, postage and stationary costs are reimbursed, you would give as much time as you feel comfortable with. “New schemes for telephone befriending, and additional online activities are being introduced, so if you enjoy chatting to people or have expertise or knowledge or passion in a particular area let us know. “Full training and support will be given. The main attributes you need are enthusiasm, reliability and be able to give up some time. Volunteering can be extremely rewarding and can build your confidence and skills.

“Volunteers can be aged 18 and over and individuals wishing to access our services (all free of charge) can either call or email us directly or someone else can contact us on their behalf. “At present in addition to the pen pals scheme, we run a weekly general knowledge and sports quiz and keep fit (men only) sessions. “All our online sessions and pen pals scheme are available to any adult aged 25 and over. The keep fit sessions are for men only.” For information any of the above activities or volunteering please contact Mark Hible at mark.hible@volunteeringmatters.org.uk or call 07841 430171.

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’ Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window. Ian’s two young sons Tom and Joe and daughter Alice show the same hard-working and conscientious qualities as their father. They are now helping the successful window company build on the 36 years of trading.

ROYD ADDS TO AWARD COLLECTION HIGH GREEN ROBBERY mary School, added: “The report was absolutely stunning. To achieve level 1 across all elements which is the highest level shows what a high quality staff we have. We have a really broad and balanced curriculum that excites and engages our pupils and it also prepares them for the future.”

WITHIN the last two academic years, Royd Nursery Infant School has received a staggering eight regional or national awards. Royd has recently added to their ever-growing collection by receiving The National Association for Education Technology (NAACE) Award. NACCE is a professional association that represents the voice of the UK education technology community in the schooling sector at a national and international

level and is recognised by Ofsted. Mr Sly, Deputy Headteacher at Royd, explained: “At the start of the project NAACE provided us with Self Review Framework which helped us to focus on three main aspects; Understanding where we were as a school with our technology strategy, planning the next stages of our technology strategy and to record our progress. “We used the Self Review Framework to help further strengthen our effective use of technology

into teaching, learning and school management. In order to be ready to apply for the Award the school has to achieve a level two across all elements. “Our staff are highly skilled and dedicated and as a result Royd Nursery Infant School achieved level 1 across all elements. We are delighted with the outcome.” Miss Jones, Executive Headteacher of both Royd Nursery Infant School and Deepcar St John’s CE Pri-

The NAACE Report mentioned that, “Royd Nursery Infant School has a well-planned computing and crosscurricular ICT programme that is given a high profile. A wide range of educational technology is used by learners including multimedia, programmable robots, presentation software, learning aids, visualisers and interactive whiteboards. Staff demonstrated a high degree of knowledge, understanding and commitment to the school ICT vision. It was evident that many highly effective strategies have been implemented at the school.”

SOUTH Yorkshire Police detectives in Sheffield are asking the public to contact them with information after an armed robbery in High Green, which may be linked to two other similar incidents. Investigations have been launched after incidents in Base Green, High Green and Gleadless. A spokesperson for the police said: “At 9.30pm on Monday January 18, we received reports that a number of men had entered the Co-Op on Jaunty Lane in Base Green armed with machetes. The group stole cigarettes and cash from behind the counter before leaving the scene. “On Tuesday night, there was a second incident, this time at the One Stop on Cottam Road, in which offenders also took tobacco and cigarettes. It is reported that one of the offenders threatened staff with a machete.

“Then, the night after, on January 20, officers were called to the CoOp on Gleadless Road at 9.10pm after reports from staff that two men had entered the shop, one armed with a hammer and attempted to steal a cash box. “Two men, aged 24 and 33, have been arrested this morning on suspicion of robbery in connection with the investigation and remain in police custody.”

T/Detective Inspector Andy Shields said: “We are currently keeping an open mind whether these three incidents are linked, but that is one of our lines of enquiry. “Detectives are reviewing CCTV and carrying out extensive enquiries to identify those responsible; neighbourhood officers will also be continuing to offer reassurance to the premises. “Thankfully no-one has been injured, but the shop workers involved have naturally been left very distressed by what has happened. “I’d like to ask anyone who witnessed these incidents to contact us. Do you live nearby? Did you see vehicles acting suspiciously or leaving the scene? Did you see anyone running away from the premises? Have you heard something about the incidents that might be useful for our investigation? “I know it can take courage to speak to us, but it’s important that you do. You can call us on 101 or make a report online, quoting incident number 890 of 18 January.” Alternatively, you can stay completely anonymous by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers via their website Crimestoppers-uk.org or by calling their UK Contact Centre on 0800 555 111.

South Yorkshire Leaders: Storm Christoph shows we can’t wait to fill funding gap on flood defences THIS week, South Yorkshire’s public services have pulled together in a mammoth effort to keep residents, businesses and communities safe from the threat of flooding brought by Storm Christoph. More than 600 staff from our four South Yorkshire local authorities, the Police and Fire Service, Yorkshire Water and the Environment Agency have been working round the clock to hand out more than 43,750 sandbags, check in on and provide advice to elderly and vulnerable residents, monitor river levels and clear gullies and drains. This has all been done against a backdrop of managing the COVID pandemic and ensuring staff and residents follow lockdown guidance. South Yorkshire’s leaders are now calling on the government to take urgent action to fill the £125 million funding gap in flood defences. Dan Jarvis, Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, said: “With multiple flood warnings in place across South Yorkshire, we are grateful for the herculean effort our emergency services, the Environment Agency, and our local authorities and communities have made to reduce the threat to life and property. They are doing brilliant work, and we will continue to support them in every way we can. “We of course all have in mind the hugely damaging floods that battered South Yorkshire in November 2019. Local leaders and I are determined to continue working to secure the

investment which will help prevent a repeat of those devastating scenes. “However, we cannot do that without the government providing the funding we need. We have committed our funds to help start the work, but we look to the government to now fill the £125million gap in funding for our Flooding Priority Programme. Even if we have been able to avoid the worst this time, we cannot afford to take risks in the future when the consequences are so damaging for our communities and our region.” Cllr Sir Steve Houghton CBE, Leader of Barnsley Council, said: “The government and major agencies now must recognise that South Yorkshire needs to be prioritised, and bring the right levels of investment into our area. The commitment shown by the four South Yorkshire councils and the South Yorkshire Combined Authority needs to be matched, and we need to bring to and end the worry and stress our communities face each winter.” Mayor Ros Jones from Doncaster Council said: “Yet again Doncaster and its communities have rallied together to deal with the threat of flooding which has been made all the more exhausting during a global pandemic. It is evident that Doncaster, like the rest of South Yorkshire, needs critical funding to protect our residents and businesses from the devastating impacts of floods. We have had too bitter an experience of this over the last 12 years and the floods of November 2019 are fresh in our minds. So, I support and join other leaders

in South Yorkshire in demanding Westminster acts and acts quickly to protect us all with the funding we need.” Councillor Chris Read, Leader of Rotherham Council said: “Working with our partners across the region, we are continuing to lobby Government for the funding urgently needed for the comprehensive flood defences we need. Without the investment required, I fear we will remain stuck in this continual cycle of worry, reaction and getting by each winter when what we are crying out for is the certainty, security and protection that our communities should expect. The Government has listened but now it must act.” Councillor Bob Johnson, Leader at Sheffield City Council, said: “I’m extremely proud of our response to the recent severe weather in Sheffield. Previous flooding incidents have caused devastation to so many, and as a result of this we have worked exceptionally hard, forward planning, to prepare and protect the city from this happening again. “Over the last few years we have invested heavily into flood defence schemes in Sheffield, we continue to build on this and construction work on our Upper Don Scheme is now well underway. We’ve stepped up to protect our communities, but more investment is needed across the whole of South Yorkshire. I join our neighbouring authorities in lobbying the Government for more funding to provide the security we desperately need.”

The school has been very supportive and helpful throughout both lockdowns, their communication is brilliant they get back to you and answer any questions quickly. The good old days I read with sadness that Di Ashby has died. She was a caring lady, always looked on the bright side of life and shared her love with everyone. Knowing her was a great privilege. It brought back many memories to me. It was at the tender age of 10 that me and my family came to live down Station Road, Deepcar, from Worksop. My dad Wilfred Galpin had been given a promotion in Genefax which was why we finished up in Deepcar. There were row upon row of terraced houses, all with outside toilets. No gardens and not many cars around. At first I missed my pals back in Worksop, my mum missing her friends and neighbours too. But after a short while things began to look brighter and every day there were new people to meet and make friends with.

Avoiding collisions, or minimising their impact if they do happen, could not only prevent the heartache of losing a loved one in a crash but, by keeping the road network free flowing, it helps to make sure that vital deliveries of vaccines can be made, which could prevent the heartache of losing a loved one to COVID. It just goes to show that road safety is important for us all, all of the time, for so many different reasons. Stay safe until next time, Joanne Wehrle, South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership manager.

Be kind to yourself this winter When times get tough, a warm bath can help to soothe body and mind. During the dark winter months, we naturally look for the things that bring us comfort. A hot cup of tea, a good book, or spending time with loved ones. With so many freedoms taken away from us this winter, it’s

particularly important that we’re kind to ourselves. Evidence shows that kindness and compassion, to ourselves and to others, actually improve our mental health. Many people find a warm bath helps to melt away their worries. And in fact, baths also help to relieve muscle pain and tension,

Feeding garden birds By the Upper Don Tree Charter branch DURING lockdown, many of us have found that watching garden birds provides a fascinating and welcome distraction from the gloom of the news reports. It’s not surprising, then, that last year the RSPB found that sales of bird feeders trebled and that the amount of wild bird food sold increased by 86%.

TIGERS LOOK TO MAY START

BRITISH Speedway promoters are delighted to launch a new five-year plan with the focus on the talented crop of British youngsters in both professional leagues.

Championship clubs can build up to 39-points for six riders plus a youngster graded two stars or below, alternatively 38-points plus a rider with a grade of three stars and below.

In addition, a start date of Saturday May 1 has been set for the 2021 season with the Premiership starting on Monday May 3, with Sheffield Tigers in the mix.

The plan is to increase the young British riders in teams to two each in both leagues from 2022 onwards.

From this year onwards, every Premiership and Championship club will include one of the ‘rising stars’ in their team with the aim of encouraging progression at a faster rate. It’s a project which has reached fruition after the impressive performances from the younger generation in recent times. Every ‘rising star’ will be given grading and Premiership clubs will build their teams up to a combined average of 35.5 for six riders plus a British youngster graded four and below.

The Premiership will see six clubs for 2021 with a view to welcoming Swindon back in 2022. Each team will race 10 home league meetings and 10 away, plus an individual series is planned with one round at each track. Plymouth have also expressed an interest in joining the Championship with discussions ongoing to make it a 12-team league plus a Knockout Cup competition. Additionally, Somerset will be welcomed back for 2022 following their recent withdrawal. British Speedway Promoters Ltd Chairman Rob Godfrey said: “Everyone is

excited by the new project to work with the youth and to encourage them over a five-year plan. We want to see riders develop from youth level to league racing and ultimately to the national team.

and Championship will benefit from this project. I expect two highly competitive leagues and every club is committed to making 2021 a big success.

British Speedway’s broadcast partners Eurosport are fully on board with encouraging the “We have a host of talented youngsters. young riders desperate to make a career out of the sport and we are going to work closely with them to present them opportunities at league level to supplement the excellent work of Neil Vatcher and academies coaching them.

Simon Downing, Head of Eurosport UK said: “This new fiveyear format sets the tone for the ambition of British Speedway. We strongly believe this will drive interest and growth around what we already know is a hugely-exciting competition. The prospect of helping uncover top emerging British talent and contributing to their

career progression is something that really excites us. “Eurosport prides itself on providing fans with the best possible viewing experience, and through collaboration with BSP Ltd we are looking forward to delivering this across our multiple platforms in 2021 and beyond.

“With the restrictions in Poland and how many leagues they allow riders to sign up to, we have made this move – but we believe it’s the right thing to do in any circumstances. “British Speedway is coming back and I, for one, cannot wait for the warmer weather, brighter nights and sound of bikes warming up for the new season. British Speedway ViceChairman Damien Bates added: “The Premiership
