Five new cycling routes show off the best of the Sheffield Lakeland area

FIVE new cycling routes have been created as a free download by Stocksbridge countryside management charity, the Steel Valley Project, to help people discover new places to ride in their local area.

Developed in response to an increasing number of cyclists as a result of the Covid-19 restrictions, the routes are aimed at people who are new or returning to cycling, along with those just wanting to explore and find out how to link the local network of roads, tracks and rights of way.

Located around the urban edges of the Sheffield Lakeland area, the series of 5 cycle routes vary in length from five to 14 miles and are relatively easy going with a mix of road and off-road sections.

Although there are some tough hills which may need pushing up, the aim is that they can be ridden on gravel, hybrid or mountain bikes.

The project has been supported by National Lottery players through the Heritage Fund and the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership.

Trek Sheffield Fox Valley have added their support and, to celebrate the launch of the cycle routes, are also giving a free T-shirt to people riding all five (terms and conditions apply).

HILLSBOROUGH COUNCILLOR ELECTED AS NEW SHEFFIELD LABOUR GROUP LEADER Bob Johnson has been elected as the Leader of Sheffield City Council Labour Group at a meeting of the group this week.

Two weeks ago, Julie Dore announced that she would be standing down as Leader ahead of her retirement as a councillor in May, after leading the Labour Group since 2010 and being Leader of Sheffield City Council since 2011.

Councillor Johnson has served as a Councillor for the Hillsborough ward, where he lives, since 2011, and as Cabinet Member for Transport and Development since May 2019. In this time he has worked on the development of a new local plan which proposes the regeneration of Sheffield city centre and to protect the city’s green belt from development.

Councillor Johnson will replace Councillor Dore as Leader of Sheffield City Council at the next Full Council meeting which will

be held on Wednesday January 6.

Councillor Bob Johnson, said: “It is an unbelievable honour to be elected as Leader of the Labour Group and I would like to thank my colleagues for putting their trust in me. I am Sheffield born and bred and am passionate about our city delivering on the huge potential we have.

“I would like to pay tribute to Julie who has led the city through one of the most challenging times in our history, dealing with a decade of austerity and the pandemic over the past year.

She should be provide of everything she has achieved as she retires from office in May. “Now is a crucial time and as a city we face enormous challenges with the ongoing pandemic, as we continue to fight this virus and the long term economic and social impact.

“I am determined that we continue to take decisive action to protect our city through the next stages of this pandemic. Wheth-

Paces invests in new base to support more adults living with motor disorders and brain injuries

PACES, the High Green specialist centre, charity and school for individuals with Cerebral Palsy and motor disorders, is to expand its services for adults with the opening of a new facility.

Located at the Smithywood Business Park – just two miles from Paces current headquarters and directly off the M1 at junction 35 - the 8,000 square foot base will allow Paces Living Adult Services to grow and support three-times as many adults in the future.

It will mean more places for more individuals, who will be able to easily access the facility from across South Yorkshire and beyond, as well as providing an improved space to

offer conductive education sessions that improve the mobility of those who have acquired brain injuries – such as through a stroke, Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson’s.

Garden Nature Notes Something different for 2020 in Thorpe Hesley from the Upper Don Tree Charter Branch THE Tree Charter was launched at Lincoln Castle on November 6 2017, the 800th Anniversary of the 1217 Charter of the Forest. The new Charter for trees, woods and people set out the principles for a society in which people and trees can stand strong together.

However, planting trees in open spaces is not the only way we can help wildlife to flourish. We as individuals can’t stop forests burning in the Amazon.

But all of us who have gardens, even a tiny garden or patio, can help wildlife to flourish in our community with a little thought and understanding as to what wildlife requires.

In our area, as in most parts of the country, we have seen the number of wildlife species – most obviously songbirds – decline drastically in recent years. Garden and woodland birds which were not so long ago, very common such as thrushes, chaffinches, yellowhammers and greenfinches are rarely seen today.

Birds of prey, which have increased in recent years, need a plentiful supply of small birds and mammals for survival. These creatures in turn need shelter for their survival.

According to the Wildlife Trust the best form of shelter is a hedge which can form a garden boundary instead of a fence or wall, especially if native trees and shrubs are used. Hedges allow wildlife to move between gardens and other spaces, and provide feeding and breeding opportunities. They also look beautiful.

Hedges offer food in the form of leaves, nectar-rich flowers, berries, fruits, seeds and nuts, and are also good hunting grounds for predators seeking insects and other invertebrates. They make natural windbreaks, creating sheltered areas in the garden, which is particularly important for butterflies. They also create areas of shade, increasing the range of habitats within the garden for wildlife and people!

Informal hedges and trees are better than those that are regularly clipped; for instance, hawthorn, holly and privet will produce few or no flowers and berries if kept trim. Planting hedges instead of using fences and walls allows wildlife to travel, including hedgehogs and find food and shelter more easily.

Choosing your plants: Native shrubs and trees like hawthorn, field maple, blackthorn, beech, hornbeam and holly make an ideal mixture of hedging plants. Grow rambling plants, such as wild rose, bramble and honeysuckle, through your hedge to provide even more shelter and food for wildlife. Honeysuckle smell gorgeous. and the wild roses are a lovely addition to the flora of the garden Ivy is particularly beneficial for nesting birds and it flowers in the autumn when few other nectar sources are available to

insects. Encourage prospective wildlife by growing it up into large trees. Rambling roses can also be planted up trees creating a rich source of nectar for wildlife and a lovey sight for human eyes!

Planting your hedges: The best time for planting is between November and March, but never plant into waterlogged or frozen ground. Bare, rooted plants are cheaper, but take care not to expose the roots for long when planting.

Until they are established, keep the base of your plants free from weeds with a thick mulch or matting. If you can’t plant them where they are going to be permanently straight away heel them in somewhere temporary; even a bucket of soil/compost can serve as a temporary home if necessary as long as the roots are buried.

For a mixed native hedge, try to include three plants of the same species per 1 m (3 ¼ ft) with one each of two other species.

Maintaining your hedges: Hedges should not be pruned until late winter or early spring so that wildlife can take advantage of the insects and fruits provided during the winter months.

In the first spring, cut shrubs back to 4560 cm (18-25 in) above the ground. This encourages bushy growth.

Thankfully, a local charity has stepped in to take away all the hassle.

Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice will be easing people’s post-festive woes with an exciting new Christmas tree recycling service across Sheffield in partnership with several community-spirited local businesses.

For a small donation, the charity and its team of eager elves will collect real Christmas trees from outside people’s homes and then recycle them in an ethical and environmentally friendly way.

Each tree recycled will help Bluebell Wood be there for children and families across Sheffield who simply don’t know how long they have together.

Long-standing Bluebell Wood supporter XPO Logistics, which has sites in Barnsley, Chapeltown and Doncaster, is delighted to

lend its support and expertise to the charity’s new service.

Gavin Williams, managing director, supply chain – UK and Ireland, XPO Logistics, said: “As a business we’re always looking for ways to give back, and our Christmas tree collection is a practical way to help the community while supporting a life-changing local charity.

Hello. I hope you are well. What a year it has been! I do not think there are many people who have managed to get to the end of 2020 without feeling stressed or anxious at least once.

However, we are at the end of it and we have made it together. Sadly, some people have lost loved ones, jobs, businesses and money along the way.

Hopefully, the end is in sight to the pandemic and next year will bring some relief from the difficulties we have all been facing. If there are any positives to take from the year, it can be that this is the year communities came together once again to help one another.

Whether that has been through helping to deliver food parcels, clapping in unison on our doorsteps or being courteous of our fellow human beings - there has been a lot of compassion shown and that is something we should remember as a nation and keep the traits of as we moved forward.

To keep your stress levels low over the festive season, remember to not put yourself under too much financial strain. The cost of gifts is going up and up and the wants and needs of young ones are ever increasing.

With that said, enjoy every single moment where you can, whether that is sharing a mince pie with your friends, swapping presents with family or chilling on your own watching your favourite Christmas movies.

This can add pressure to buy the latest and greatest things. However, try not to burden yourself financially and head into the New Year worried about debt. Enjoy yourself and spoil people where you can, but not so that it creates you anxiety moving forward. Try setting a budget for each person you want to buy for and stick within your limits. It is also worth noting, not to overindulge in social media during the festive season. Some people can be prone to looking at other people’s picture-perfect Christmas’s - whether that’s amazing trees, toys or things people are doing – and feel envious, upset or like they are missing out.

Heading into the New Year it is always good to set goals. These can help to refocus your wants and needs, especially after a year like the last one. One thing to remember about this year is that it is okay to have just survived the year and not conquered any mountains. The year has been a mountain in itself.

All of these are normal feelings to have, but if you find yourself experiencing any of them when looking at social media then make sure to turn it off for a while. We are not all the same and there will always be someone with more than us and someone with less. It is important to enjoy what you have and do not become disheartened at what you perceive yourself to not have.

Charlie skates to success

BARNSLEY College Travel and Tourism student Charlie Stringer is setting her sights on competing in the World Junior Synchronised Skating Championships in the near future.

The 16-year-old started skating at the age of seven, on the basic UK level scheme progressing through the 16 levels, which resulted in her joining the Sheffield Synchronised Ice-Skating club at the age of 10.

This led to Charlie competing in competitions all around the world, against national and international teams, where she has regularly achieved podium finishes. Most recently she was

From then I started to train with the Sheffield Synchronised Ice-Skating Club and moved from being elementary to now competing at junior.

“My greatest sporting achievement would be managing to qualify for the Team GB development squad. The Elite Sports Performance Bursary will ensure that I am able to access more of the things I need in order to go further with my skating.”

Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a team that will hurt us and cause a lot of problems and be dangerous if we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stick to our game plan, play to our strengths and make sure that we have a fast start after a month layoff.

Richards says: â&#x20AC;&#x153;We return back to competitive football on Saturday in a brilliant game away in the FA Vase second round, the furthest we have been in this cup competition away at Longridge Town. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a North West Counties Premier Division side, a team that did well in this competition previously, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a team which had a good season last year. Obviously theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve not played

â&#x20AC;&#x153;The players have come back fit and strong. We assessed their fitness in training and there were some high levels of fitness so weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got no issues there. They looked sharp in training, they played at a high intensity we did a good hour and a half, we didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t overload

the players just enough to get them back involved and get ready for Saturday. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve talked about how weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to set up, how weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to play in the different areas of the pitch so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just going to Longridge and doing that. Obviously itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s behind closed doors which is a shame for our community but we want to progress so hopefully if we can win this one and in a weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have another FA Vase game which will keep competitive football with league games not starting until January. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We just have to control what we can control and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s winning in the FA Vase. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not our fault that this the situation weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s our responsibility that we respond well to it, do well on Saturday and see how far we can get in this cup competition.â&#x20AC;?
