Bogus gardener targeted elderly A BOGUS gardener who tricked elderly victims into handing over money for jobs he never completed has been sentenced.

Jamie Woodcock, 35, targeted vulnerable people in Sheffield by cold calling them at home.

After persuading his victims they needed gardening work completing, he would agree a fee, but then convince each victim of a false need to buy additional gardening equipment to get the job done. He would make each victim pay him up-front, yet once the money was handed over he would leave with no intention of ever returning.

The offences were committed in the Wharncliffe Side, Stocksbridge, Wisewood and High Green areas of Sheffield between 21 April and 15 June.

Enquiries by the Sheffield North West Neighbourhood Team, based at Deepcar, quickly identified Woodcock, of Saffron Court, Wombwell, Barnsley, as a suspect, following a similar pattern of offending across other parts of Sheffield and Rotherham.

PC Ben Woodley, who led the investigation, said: “I’m pleased that justice has been achieved for the victims of Woodcock’s unscrupulous behaviour.

He is a persistent offender, who continued to target the most vulnerable, elderly people in our community.

- Trust no-one who cold calls you.

- Never send or give money to anyone you don’t know or trust.

- Check people are who they say they are.

- Do not hand over money or sign anything until you have checked the credentials of the company or individual.

“Woodcock was fortunate to have his custodial sentence suspended. I truly hope he sees this as an opportunity to change his ways. A custodial sentence awaits if he does not.”

Woodcock pleaded guilty to four counts of fraud by false representation and was sentenced at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court earlier this month. He was ordered to repay £1,450 that he had dishonestly obtained from the four victims, and was handed a 52-week prison sentence suspended for two years. In addition, he was given a supervision order for two years, with 150 hours of unpaid work to be completed within the first 12 months.

Blades stars don Christmas jumpers to support Paces PLAYERS and staff at Sheffield United will swap the red and white stripes for festive knitwear on Friday December 11 as they support a South Yorkshire charity’s Christmas Jumper Day. Paces, the High Greenbased specialist centre, charity and school for children and adults with Cerebral Palsy and motor disorders, have received support from the Blades for a number of years and are hoping the club’s fans will join the stars in signing up to support the festive fundraising.

The money will go towards allowing Paces to move its special school and adult services to a new home, allowing the charity to support three times as many children and adults as they currently do.

The organisation teaches life-changing skills using conductive education - such

as sitting, standing, walking, speaking, communication and self-care - in an environment they can have fun, develop friendships, and feel like they belong.

Julie Booth, Head of Fundraising at Paces, said: “Everyone at Sheffield United have been huge supporters of Paces and we’re delighted that they’ll be putting on their Christmas Jumpers on December 11 to support our fundraising.

“We know many are still working at home, but there’s still plenty of opportunities to join the festive fun and we hope to see photos of amazing knits from kitchen tables, spare rooms and sofas as well as from those back in offices, factories and on the training pitch.”

BUILD COMMENCES ON NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT IN WHARNCLIFFE SIDE LOCAL builder Erris Homes have commenced work on their new 13home development in Wharncliffe Side, Sheffield.

With the completion of their current Orchard Croft development in High Green expected at the end of December, Erris Homes are bringing an exciting new community of thirteen new-build homes to the peaceful suburb of Wharncliffe Side. This new development, named Cloverleaf Court, will be situated on the site of the former Cloverleaf Car Sales on Main Road, and will comprise twelve semidetached homes and one detached four-bedroom family home.

Sheffield moves to Tier Three THE Government has announced today that Sheffield will come out of lockdown on December 2 and enter into the tier three ‘very high’ alert category, along with Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham.

Some tier three restrictions will be different this time compared to when Sheffield was in tier three before lockdown started on November 5.

People must not meet socially with friends and family indoors in any setting unless they are part of your household or support bubble. This includes private homes and indoors in hospitality venues. They must also not meet with people outside of their household or support bubble in a private garden or in most outdoor public venues.

People must not socialise in a group of more than six in an outdoor public space such as a park or beach, the countryside or a public garden.

Hospitality venues will be closed, with the exception of take aways, click and collect, drive through and delivery services. Shops and retail outlets will be open.

Indoor venues will be closed including indoor play centres and areas, trampolining parks and soft play, casinos, bingo halls, bowling alleys, skating rinks, amusement arcades and adult gaming centres, laser quests and escape rooms, cinemas, theatres and concert halls, snooker halls, bowling alleys and skating rinks.

Leisure and sports facilities may continue to stay open but there will be no group exercise classes (including fitness and dance), saunas and steam rooms will close.

People will be required to reduce the number of journeys they make where possible but can travel to venues or amenities that are open.

Travel to other parts of the UK needs to be avoided, including for overnight stays other than where necessary, such as for work, education, youth services, to receive medical treatment, or because of caring responsibilities.

Places of worship will be open, but people must not attend with or socialise with anyone outside of their household or support bubble while

you are there, unless a legal exemption applies.

Regular testing will be offered to up to 2 family members or friends per resident by Christmas, which, when combined with other infection-control measures such as PPE, will support indoor visits with physical contact. For international travel there is advice and guidance from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office: travel advice for destination information and the travel corridors list Greg Fell, Director of Public Health for Sheffield said: “The important thing for us at the moment is to remember that although our rates are coming down they do remain too

high so my message to everyone is to carry on doing the right thing to beat this virus; wash your hands, don’t touch your face with hands that aren’t clean and keep your distance – that two metres between you and another person makes all the difference.

“As we know, this is a virus that kills 1% of the people it infects and we have many people in the city who are at a higher risk than others from it. We have to remain vigilant. We’re not out of the woods yet and, even though we are hearing good news about a vaccination it is not in place yet so this is a crucial time for us to keep following the rules.

“That said, what Sheffielders are doing is working. We have the second or third lowest rates in Yorkshire which hasn’t happened by magic; it’s happened because a large proportion of people have followed the guidance and we thank them for that.”

Police appeal for information POLICE are investigating a reported burglary in the Fox Hill area of Sheffield in the early hours of November 28.

Around 4.15am, it is reported that three men wearing all black and face coverings have entered a property on Fox Hill Road, demanding money and cannabis from the woman occupant who was downstairs at the time.

The suspects then reportedly attacked a man, causing minor injuries as he came downstairs to see what the noise was.

They then left the property taking a handbag, containing perfume and makeup.

It is believed the suspects had weapons and have targeted the wrong property.

Police are keen to hear from anybody who may have information that can help the investigation.

Public consultation begins on use of new funds for Ecclesfield Park WITH weeks to go until Christmas Day, South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) is urging people to stay safe and sober on our roads this December.

2020 has been a year like no other and with tier three restrictions in place, the Covid19 pandemic continues to bring significant challenges to communities.

With pubs, bars and restaurants currently only able to offer takeaway services, celebrations will look and feel very different – but the law on drink and drug driving remains the same.

Joanne Wehrle, SYSRP manager, said: “Everyone has had a difficult year and during the festive season, we totally appreciate people will be enjoying a drink at home.

“We all deserve to relax and make the most of Christmas 2020, but we have to remind people that even the smallest amount of alcohol can affect your judgement on the road.

“Whether it’s a quick drive to the shops after ‘a glass’ of wine with tea or your commute to work the morning after a few drinks, you could be over the limit.

“Let’s keep it simple – if you need to drive, don’t have a drink or take drugs. This year has been difficult enough, please do the right thing this Christmas.”

In December 2019, 130 drivers were arrested in South Yorkshire for failing an alcohol or drugs test. A total of 1,120 breath tests were carried out and of these drivers, 100 blew a positive result.

Police enforcement activity will be supported by mobile messaging from SYSRP. The digital advans will be out and about every weekend in December at shopping areas across the county.

From this week, officers from South Yorkshire Police’s roads policing group will be back out on the streets setting up mobile check sites across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.

There will also be a twoweek radio campaign and social media adverts aimed at those most likely to drink and drive.

Roads Traffic Inspector Jason Booth said: “You, our communities tell us that drink and drug driving is among the top three areas you’d like us to focus on.

“This year, although Christmas will be slightly different for everyone, the dangers of drink driving remain the same.

“Our commitment to safer roads will also continue.

Throughout December, officers will be carrying out roadside breath tests to ensure that those driving over the alcohol limit or driving whilst under the influence of drugs are caught and prosecuted.

“Please think before you get in a car. Is it really worth it?

You could lose your job, your family or potentially even your life or kill someone else.

Drink driving kills, it is a fact.”

“We don’t want anyone to remember this Christmas as the time they became a drink driver,” added Joanne.

“It’s been an incredibly difficult year. Let’s remember this year as the year we all helped each other, the year we took care of each other.

“Let’s not make life harder, please don’t drink and drive.”

As well as the risk of being involved in a collision, the consequences of drinking and driving include a ban, points on your licence, an unlimited fine or prison.

This will mean increased insurance costs, potential job loss and even restrictions on travel to other countries.

SHEFFIELD City Council is currently asking residents about improvements they want to see at Ecclesfield Park.

The consultation has only just begun and yet the council state they have had nearly 200 responses already.

“This will come at a cost, but we believe that our parks and green spaces are a priority. It is now for the wider community to tell us what they think so that the improvements they want to see are delivered.

People are encouraged to share their ideas and opinions on how the park can be improved before the survey closes on January 31 2021.

Speaking about the plans East Ecclesfield and Labour Councillor Andy Bainbridge stated: “Ecclesfield Park is well loved and well used. The playground, multi-usegames-area and skating area are great, but I don’t believe there are enough leisure and recreation facilities currently at the park.

“This is why Labour instructed council officers to explore what more should be done

“The consultation will directly affect turning Ecclesfield Park into a more active park – with better accessibility and usage. I urge residents to have they say and I promise I will work hard to ensure the council are properly listening to feedback, and delivering a park we can all be proud of.”

Volunteers needed to help spread Christmas cheer STOCKSBRIDGE Community Care Group will be collecting and delivering Christmas cards to isolated neighbours in the community.

If you want to help the scheme, you can post your cards in the post box at the Stocksbridge Co-op Store.

Volunteers are also needed to help distribute the cards and some surprise gifts that have been bought through donations. It is hoped they might be able to sing a Christmas Carol as they deliver to spread cheer too!

The Stocksbridge Community Care Group is a charity

based in Stocksbridge Town Hall.

They cover the whole of the area working with isolated individuals. They have identified 60 to 80 people in our community who are facing a Christmas in very challenging circumstances.

Many of them have spent months alone.

Samantha Devine of the group told Look Local: “It’s been very difficult for a lot of people. We’ve sent out chocolates and flowers on birthdays and kept in touch via the phone but for a lot of people it’s been like being a prisoner in their own homes.

“We are asking people to send cards to these people.

If you give me a call, I can give you the name of someone to write a card to.

“We set up a Gofundme for personalised treats and we need volunteers to deliver these, as well as the cards.

And what better way to deliver them than by singing a carol too!

“We’ll be distributing the week commencing December 20 so if you can spare a bit of time, get in touch.”

A staggering 160 entries for Grenoside’s first ever Christmas Tree Trail THE organisers of Grenoside’s first ever Christmas Tree Trail have been blown away with the response from the community - as 160 homes, businesses and organisations enter this year’s competition.

It was announced last month that Grenoside’s popular Christmas Tree Festival had this year been transformed into a Christmas village trail to help people get into the festive spirit whilst still adhering to social distancing.

In these uncertain times organisers of the annual event, which attracts hundreds of visitors each year, still wanted to do something that brightens up Christmas for everyone in Grenoside and beyond.

The aim of the competition – which is now closed – is to decorate a tree in your garden or premises – either a traditional Christmas tree bought for the trail, or an existing tree/bush.

It must be easily visible from the road. All the entries have been collated and there will be a mapped walking trail making the village the place in Sheffield to visit this December.

Chris Levesley explains: “We have been totally blown away with the response we have had from the Grenoside community. It is incredible and shows that Christmas is definitely not cancelled in Grenoside!

“We have had entries from the different year groups at Grenoside Primary School and lots of families and businesses all wanting to get involved and light up the village. Everyone is talking about it and there is a real sense of ex-

Residents and businesses in S35 come together to keep festive spirit alive IN a year when many of the traditional Christmas experiences for children and families won’t be able to take place, schools, businesses, community groups and local residents in S35 have come together to put on a festive event to keep children smiling.

The Windmill Hill Winter Wander will take place from Friday December 11 until the first weekend in January and is an organised trail for families to follow around Chapeltown, Burncross and High Green.

It’s free to take part and families collect letters as they go around the trail to spell some well known Christmas songs.

They can then enter a prize draw on the Windmill Hill PTA Facebook page to win some fabulous prizes donated by local businesses.

The trail was put together by Friends of Windmill Hill Primary School but local groups

and businesses, including Chapeltown library, Chapeltown Scouts, Chapeltown Forum, Burncross Action Team, S35 Rocks and many more, have all been keen to get involved.

Katy Davison from Friends of Windmill Hill said: “It’s been such a tough year for everyone, including our very resilient children. We can’t organise any of the usual school Christmas activities that we put on for the kids to enjoy this year so we came up with the Windmill Hill Winter Wander instead.

“Once we started planning it we thought, Windmill Hill kids aren’t the only ones who need cheering up this year so let’s make this a whole community event and we’d love kids and families from other local schools and nurseries to get involved. We’ve also made it a free to take part in event because it’s been such a hard year for so

many and we don’t want any families to miss out.

“We’re so grateful to the groups like Chapeltown Forum and many local businesses who’ve really got on board and helped the momentum build for what promises to be so much festive fun for local families.”

Your Letters Chapeltown prepares for Christmas At the beginning of December, the Christmas lights and decorations will be switched on, as usual, in the Memorial garden in the centre of Chapeltown.

This year there will be new lights on the Christmas tree. These have been installed with the generous assistance of local business ‘Lift and Shift’.

All the lighting and decorations are supplied and installed by the members of Chapeltown in Bloom (CiB).

CiB is a small group of volunteers who, throughout the year, maintain the garden and the numerous planters in and around Chapeltown.

We are grateful for the support of local businesses, residents and the Parish Council, on whom we rely heavily in our efforts to raise funds.

Unfortunately, this year, because of the pandemic, we will not be able to invite Father Christmas to attend his grotto and give presents to the children, nor will we be having carol singing in the garden.

It is an unfortunate consequence of the current pandemic that the usual Christmas festivities within Chapeltown are unlikely to happen this year.

However, we know from comments made by local residents and visitors that even just the lights within the garden will be a heartwarming sight for what might otherwise be a dull festive season.

St Lukeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shops will re-open in time for Christmas shopping ST Lukeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospice will be re-launching its retail operations on December 3 as the latest COVID-19 lockdown comes to an end.

Altogether, the retail operations raise almost ÂŁ3 million annually towards the more than ÂŁ7.5 million that needs to be raised every year to maintain services for the terminally ill people of Sheffield and their families.

Opening their doors again on December 3 will be eight of the charityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 13 shops at Chapeltown, Hillsborough, Crookes, Woodseats, Gleadless, City Road, Crystal Peaks, and Ecclesall Road.

Also re-opening will be the St Lukeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Donation Centre at Fieldhouse Way, near Meadowhall - the easy way to donate pre-loved items for re-sale.

The St Lukeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s donation line is also operating again on 0114 2357562 for people wanting to arrange furniture collections.

The Club has never failed to attend the designated stops in these areas for children to come along to meet Santa.

During these evenings, Santa has handed out over 3,500 chocolate bars and a variety of sweets to children of all ages.

The Club have had lengthy discussions, looking at various options as to how we could invite Santa to give a presence in our area. Unfortunately, the authorities on Health and Safety grounds will not allow this to happen.

Normally, hundreds of people with their children turn up on Christmas Eve, which would make it extremely difficult to control safe distancing.

However, the Rotary Club of Wortley, organised by president elect Trevor Fletcher, with the support of members, friends and relatives will be having a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Virtual Christmas Raffleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; to raise funds, all the proceeds of which will go towards providing help for local and needy causes.

Christmas Eve signs, highlighting the event cancellation, will be placed at the usual â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Santa Stopâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; lamp post locations, commencing on December 5.

Based upon the previous virtual raffle organised by Trevor, there will be several good quality prizes including an engine remapping service, a Nespresso coffee machine and other prizes of similar value.

Donations kindly made by the general public on these evenings, which are most welcome, subsequently distributed to local and needy causes, unfortunately cannot take place this year.

Kickboxer Rosie is a punch above

MOLE - FANS RETURN BOOST SHEFFIELD co-owner Peter Mole says next weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s return of fans to sports events is great news for next seasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s speedway prospects.

The sportâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bosses have already set out an Easter relaunch for the sport after seeing the 2020 season wiped out by the pandemic.

Despite the success of live streaming of behind closed doors events including the British Final, a full season with no fans is simply not an option.

BARNSLEY College student, Rosie Longley, is aiming for a world title in kickboxing once she is able to return to her training duties.

at the Combat Academy aspiring to be a professional fighter and is hoping to compete for the Kickboxing world title in the near future.

The 16-year-old has previously won International Combat Organisation (ICO) European title belt, five ICO Nations titles, World Martial Arts Organisation British title, World Ring Sports Association English title and ICO Northern Area title, as well as represented England in the World Championships.

Rosie is part of the Barnsley Sports Academy within College and works on her strength and conditioning with the coaching staff. This has enabled her to access an Elite Sports Performance Bursary to fund aspects of her competition such as equipment and travel.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Barnsley Sports Academy has given me the opportunity to access the Elite Sports Performance Bursary which will help fund my training and fighting after COVID-19. The College has been very supportive during the pandemic, helping me to learn to my fullest on the course, I want to thank my tutors for that.â&#x20AC;?

Rosie started kickboxing at the age of nine, initially to lose weight and learn self-defense. She now trains

to represent my country, as well as achieving many Golds and Silvers in several categories.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Once football starts to let in fans, other sports will follow. I know many of the lower league teams will not survive unless fans return soon, they are dependent on the revenue.â&#x20AC;?

Mole also insists venues are ready for fans after investment and hard work into adapting to a covid-secure environment.

He said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The pressure that was put on the powers that be, I think a return of fans to stadia had to happen.

Now with the prospect of a mass vaccination programme by the spring and football crowds set to be back in areas in tiers one and two, Mole is excited about 2021.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sports stadiums now are so conscious of all the health concerns and safety measures that need to be implemented, the safety of fans will be assured.

He said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;An Easter start has been suggested and being slightly later than normal not only will we have more time to prepare, but the weather should be more favourable to get us off to a fantastic start.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Certainly what I have seen at Owlerton, the whole organisation from admittance to and exiting from the stadium, viewing points, movement of fans around the stadium, eating outlets and bars, has all been reviewed and riskassessed to current guidelines.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is a lot of positivity in general currently, with the fantastic news of a vaccine being imminent, tremendous respect to the scientists and labs who have worked tirelessly in developing this so quickly. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That aside, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a huge plus that we are now getting close to fans, albeit in limited numbers, attending sports stadiums once more.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Universal wearing of masks is the norm and with most sports being predominantly outdoors, I see no reason why fans cannot soon return to stadia and experience the thrill of live sport once more. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All stadia are experienced in crowd safety and aware of what they must do, they just need the go ahead.â&#x20AC;?
