RESIDENTS OBJECT TO PLANS FOR 41 HOMES A PLANNING application for the development for farm land just off Wood Royd Road in Deepcar has been reviewed and re-submitted to the council but local residents say that they don’t think it should go ahead. Stocksbridge Town Council objected to the previous plans.

It has been submitted by developers DLP, who also submitted the Hollin Busk plans.

The residents surrounding the land have recently received a letter from Sheffield City Council’s planning department to say that the developer has submitted new plans. They plan on keeping part of the existing farmhouse but still want to build 41 houses on the fields.

Objectors say that the same problems will still exist.

One problem identified is a dangerous junction nearly opposite the Armitage Road junction on an already busy road.

Other concerns that have been voiced include loss of habitat for the wildlife, noise pollution, drainage problems with heavy rainfall, loss of green space and a loss of view for nearby residents.

The council have given residents until the beginning of December to add more comments.

The Great Sheffield Flood Memorial Wall

CREATED by artist Andrew Vickers of Stoneface Creative, The Great Sheffield Flood memorial wall has been a project of four years in the making.

The memorial wall runs along the boundary of Storrs wood and the River Loxley and has been designed in a wave style to look like the 700 million gallons of water rushed down the valley on March 11 in 1864.

Along the wall are facts and figures from the flood, such as the lives that were lost, the damage that was caused and other facts we should remember as a community.

The toppers on the wall have been covered by soil and plant life - this is to represent how the damage from the flood has been covered by nature over time.

Towards the bottom of the wall there are words carved into it that where chosen by the children of Dungworth Primary School to depict the feelings and emotions of the flood.

The wall was created by Andrew Vickers, along with the Sheffield Lakeland Partnership/Heritage Fund and the local primary school.

The public are free to visit the wall.

Just for Tobias 2 planned THE inaugural ‘Just for Tobias’ event was a huge success and to date, the organisers have raised an incredible £1,050.

Their target is £7,500, which will be used to buy Tobias a specially adapted car seat.

Tobias has raised a phenomenal £150,000 for Paces Special School and the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity.

Organiser of the Just for Tobias event told Look Local: “We believe £7,500 is minuscule compared to the amount of money he has raised for these two wonderful charities and a specially adapted car seat will make a huge difference to Tobias and his mum.

“We are extremely grateful to everyone who has supported

the event either by way of promotion/donation, no matter how small.

“At our second ‘Just for Tobias’ event we have the amazing local duo, Stevie Moore and Patricia Lynn, who will do an hour of wonderful live music.

Everyone is more than welcome to join us - the Facebook links are their names. The event is at 2pm on Sunday November 29.

Appeal following fight in Penistone POLICE in Barnsley are appealing for witnesses and mobile phone footage to an altercation which happened in Penistone on Monday November 16.

At 1pm, two different parties were out walking their dogs on Back Lane, close to the Penistone and District Bowling Club. It’s reported that a fight has broken out between two women.

Police are also treating this as a suspected hate crime after a man who was also present received verbal abuse.

We believe that several other people were present at the time and this in-

cident may have been captured on video. If you witnessed the incident, please share the footage with us, or contact us with any information which could assist out enquiries.

COUNCIL LEADER TO STAND DOWN COUNCILLOR Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council, has announced that she will be standing down as Leader next month.

Councillor Dore announced in January that she would not be seeking re-election as Councillor for Park & Arbourthorne when her term was due to expire in May this year.

She has served as a Councillor since 2000 and Leader of the Council since 2011. However, when the local elections were cancelled due to the pandemic, she stayed on as Leader to help tackle the Coronavirus pandemic in the city.

A new Leader of the Labour Group will be elected on Monday December 7. Councillor Dore will remain as a Councillor for Park &

Arbourthorne Ward until her term expires in May 2021.

Councillor Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “When I announced in January that I would not be seeking re-election in May, no one could have predicted the events that were about to unfold over the coming months . When the COVID crisis hit in March and the local elections were cancelled I thought that it was the only right and responsible thing to do to stay on to help navigate Sheffield through the crisis.

“The current situation has impacted on all of us in some way, we have all been touched by it and I am proud of the way that the city has come together to support each other. I am proud of the role that the council has played in providing support to the people most in

need and most impacted by this situation as well as getting support to our businesses.

Whilst at the same time continuing to run and operate the day to day services for the people of Sheffield. Doing all of this whilst having to adapt to new ways of working in the same way that so many different organisations and businesses have had to during the pandemic.

“As a city we have come together across our communities and so many different organisations to fight this pandemic to I would like to thank everyone that I have worked with over this period. We have worked with councils across South Yorkshire and I would like to thank the other South Yorkshire Council Leaders and Mayor Dan Jarvis for the joint work we have undertaken together as a region, which has been crucial.

“Clearly this is still far from over and we still have much more to do to beat this. But I think that now is the right time to allow a new Leader to take over, as we enter a new year and a new Chief Executive will also be starting in January.

POLICE TACKLE SPEED AWARENESS AND PARKING LOCAL PCSOs Mark and Jimmy were busy on November 17 with Speed Awareness Week.

It was an early start for them and Sheffield City Council wardens outside Ecclesfield Primary School making people aware of the dangers of inconsiderate parking outside the school when dropping their children off.

The vast majority of parents are considerate and safety conscious of the local community and pupils of the school, however there was a few parents behaving inconsiderately.

Please give yourself more time to drop your children off safely without putting others in danger.

The team also visited to Yew Lane, Wheel Lane, Wortley Road and Hollow Gate/Stanley Road giving advice, reassurance and guidance about the consequences of speeding.

As part of National Road Safety Week, South Yorkshire Police along with South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) and South Yorkshire Safety Camera Partnership (SYSC), will be carrying out activities to promote the 2020 theme: No Need to Speed.

Inspector Jason Booth, SYP Roads Policing Group, said: “Nationally, speed contributes to one in five collisions and our communities continually tell us that it’s the area they want us to focus on’ to continuing tell us it’s one of the priorities they want us to focus on.

“While we are unable to run Community Speed Watch due to Covid-19 restrictions, we will be running our own operations and hosting check sites across all four districts.

“It is very much part of our daily business and we will continue to ensure that those people risking lives by breaking the law, will be prosecuted.

“There really is no excuse when it comes to speed and alongside our partners, we will be supporting the national effort to combat speeding.”

Worrall wash trough restored BESIDES the obvious set of drinking troughs by the road leading up to Bradfield School, there’s another in Worrall, tucked away by the footpath between Boggard Land and the top of Walshaw Road.

This has become a filthy mess and had started to flood the path. It was not always like that as locals remember playing and drinking the water there as children two generations ago.

Luckily, Worrall Environmental Group (WEG) received such generous donations last year for a commemorative stone that enough remained to restore this trough with an award of £3,680 from the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership and other help from the Greaves Family Trust and Bradfield Parish Council who gave a

bench made by Philip Ashton.

WEG then got professionals and volunteers to do the work, all strictly adhering to the covid-19 restrictions.

Overhanging tree branches were removed and the site tidied before contractors Anthony Ollerenshaw and Paul Dyson from Load Brook restored the drainage, rebuilt the wall and fenced out the animals.

Then volunteers laid turf, painted the fence and scattered wild flower seeds. Finally came the mucky work, clearing silt and rotting leaves from the trough and lining it. With the sheep gone, the leeches that had been feeding on them went too.

Readers around in the late 1970s may have seen a Youth Opportu-

nities Programme team tidying up this area and laying kerbstones to keep soil from sliding into the trough.

It would be interesting to hear from any involved in this work or others with memories or photographs of the trough. One mystery is the purpose of a small triangular part of the trough by the wall.

If you are in the Worrall area do take a look.

A public footpath runs past so have a seat on the bench but perhaps leave dipping a toe in the water until next summer.

Save the date to save the planet with the Peak District National Park Foundation CLIMATE change is a huge challenge for all of us. Yet, one of the biggest heroes in the fight against global warming is a simple moss, found right here in the Peak District National Park.

Sphagnum moss is a carbon-defeating superhero - and we need your help to plant more of it on Peak District moorland. Can you help us to Restore Our Moors?

This Christmas the Peak District National Park Foundation in taking on The Big Give’s fundraising challenge to fund restoration work on Peat District moors.

Just one donation will have twice the impact – thanks to super match funding from local busi-

nesses and The Reed Foundation. The restoration work will be carried out by the Moors for the Future Partnership.

Peat is the single biggest store of carbon in the UK, storing the equivalent of 20 years of all UK CO2 emissions and keeping it out of the atmosphere.

But there is a problem. The moors in the Peak District, home to this precious peat, are badly damaged from centuries of industrial pollution from the surrounding cities of Sheffield and Manchester.

Peat on the moors is badly degraded; it is bare and dry - not the lush green landscape that it needs to be to store carbon.

Globally, 25% of peatlands have been destroyed and, in the UK, at least 80% are damaged. In fact the problem is even worse because damaged peat moors actually gives out carbon, at a rate of 10 million tonnes a year.

We need your help to fund vital moorland restoration - including planting bog plants like the carbon defeating sphagnum moss – to help to turn this problem around.

Through the Big Give, all donations to our Restore Our Moors fundraiser will be doubled. For example, if you give £20 we can spend £40 on sphagnum plants.

Mollie Hunt works with both science and conservation teams at the Moors for the Future Partnership. She says: “We’re delighted that the Peak District National Park Foundation is taking part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge and that they have taken this opportunity for local communities to support our work to restore our local peatlands.

“In good condition, our moorlands provide us with a host of benefits, giving us space to explore, breathe and play.

They also capture carbon and help in the fight against climate change. But they need help to bring them back to a condition were they’re able to do

that after centuries of pollution.

“We’re bringing back wetter conditions to the moors and planting sphagnum moss, which absorbs carbon from the atmosphere and forms layers of peat. Please help us to replant sphagnum moss across one of

the most degraded landscapes in Europe and help these moorlands to start locking up carbon once again.”

Councillors support plan to protect Green Belt TO protect the green belt whilst ensuring the right kind of new houses in Sheffield, Sheffield City Council has developed a new plan to develop the majority of new homes on brownfield sites closer to the city centre and to protect the green belt.

“For years I have campaigned to protect sites in Stocksbridge from unnecessary developments - like at Hollin Busk. I’m backing Option A so we can continue to protect our green spaces which are so important to people in Stocksbridge.”

Housing targets for the city are imposed by central Government, and these targets have led to some local authorities building on the green belt.

Councillor Andy Bainbridge, Labour East Ecclesfield Councillor, added: “I am committed to seeing our green spaces in Ecclesfield and Chapeltown protected and I have submitted a response to the consultation giving my full backing to Option A.

However, Sheffield City Council say they have devised a plan to protect the green belt from housing developments in the city.

This is part of the ‘Local Plan’ consultation which means different options have to be put forward to cover housing developments for Sheffield over the next 15 years.

One of the proposals is ‘Option A’ which looks to develop the majority of new homes on brownfield sites and around city centre, whilst protecting the green belt.

The public consultation is now closed and local Labour councillors have submitted their responses underlining the importance of local green spaces and are backing Option A to protect them.

Stocksbridge Councillor Julie Grocutt said: “We know that the Conservative Government are bringing forward plans to make it easier for developers to build on our green spaces. I am really pleased that locally we are doing all we can to demonstrate we can meet our housing targets whilst protecting the green belt.

Looking after your health and wellbeing NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is reminding the public that there are things people can do at home to look after their own health and wellbeing, particularly during covid-19.

Last week was self-care week, an annual national awareness week that focuses on embedding support for self-care across communities, families and generations.

Only 20% of our health needs require a trip to the doctors or hospital, the rest are down to things such as environment and our own behaviour. By taking care of ourselves and adopting healthy lifestyles we can reduce our chance of becoming seriously ill and needing medical help.

Dr Terry Hudsen, GP and Chair of NHS Sheffield CCG, said: “It’s particularly important that we look after both our physical and mental health during covid-19 to ensure we stay as healthy as possible.

“Simple things such as taking a daily walk, eating a healthy diet and taking time out to relax and reduce stress can make a huge difference to our health over time. Exercise helps to keep our weight down and our organs healthy and getting the right vitamins from healthy food keeps our immune system strong which all helps us fight viruses such as covid-19 and flu.”

IT was a busy weekend for Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team with two local callouts on Sunday.

The first callout came at 11.38am for a lady who had sustained a serious ankle injury up stream from Brookhouse Bridge, Langsett.

The lady was given strong pain relief before having her ankle put in a splint and then secured to the team stretcher for a short carry to the waiting ambulance.

The second callout of the day came at 2.25pm to assist Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust with an in injured mountain biker in Grenoside Woods.

The casualty had been unconscious for a short period of time as team members were making their way to the incident.

On arrival, the mountain biker had gained consciousness and was being kept warm by friends, he was able to walk out with assistance to the waiting ambulance.

Labour councillors are committed to protecting our green spaces Sheffield City Council recently undertook a public consultation on the Local Plan – a planning process looking at how to provide the housing needs for Sheffield over the next 15 years.

I am committed to this option and to seeing homes largely built in the central area of the city – providing high density, vibrant walkable neighbourhoods with a wide choice of homes.

Local residents rightly value their green spaces and I believe it is essential to protect the green belt and develop around central Sheffield, whilst reusing land such as former industrial sites.

Labour councillors throughout North Sheffield are backing Option A and are determined to see this as the outcome, as long as the public consultation shows suitable public support.

At the same time the Council’s Green Belt Review is seeking to add to the green belt where possible, but the criteria for any changes are set by government.

I’m aware that there has been a lot of misinformation spread about the Local Plan consultation and I want to be crystal clear with readers – Labour Christmas meal councillors have created a plan for future housing developments which would see the green belt protected. Anything you may have heard from other Stocksbridge Town Council normally host a political parties is, sadly, just scaremongering.

What was the greatest Sheffield club of the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;70s?

ITâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S an era that had everything from disco to punk via glam rock â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but what was Sheffieldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greatest club of the 1970s?

The question is posed by author/publisher Neil Anderson.

Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s putting the call out for revellers of the era to tell him exactly which venue deserves to feature on the cover of a 10th anniversary edition of his â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Dirty Stop Outâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Guide to 1970s Sheffieldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

The book â&#x20AC;&#x201C; his very first of a retro series that has now grown to over 20 titles - became famous nationally as the title that persuaded Ann and Chris Jackson to re-marry after 26 years apart.

The book went on to sell thousands of copies and inspired similar titles unveiled in Liverpool, Manchester, Coventry, Barnsley, Chesterfield with lots more on the way.
