LEISURE CENTRE PRAISES COMMUNITY FOR “FANTASTIC” FLOOD SUPPORT

THE management of Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre have praised the local community after they came to the aid in their time of need. Last Thursday, October 8, the Centre suffered a major flooding incident when water backed up from a blocked drain and flooded into the newly completed extension.

This was a pre-existing drain taking surface water off Oxley Park and rainwater off the roof of the Centre’s bowls hall into the main surface water drain. The blockage resulted in gallons of water backing up against the new bi-fold

doors, filling the new courtyard and entering the new Oxley’s café.

Thankfully, assistant centre manager Lee Hible, who was on duty that morning, acted quickly in summoning emergency services and local support to assist and as a result, a more serious catastrophe was averted. Andy Clarke, Chief Executive of the Trust, said “The response to calls for help was absolutely amazing with many local residents, customers, volunteers, staff and trustees all turning up to bail out the water. “We had offers of pumps, diggers – anything we need-

ed with many people turning up to help sweeping out water as fast as it was coming in – it was an absolutely fantastic effort from everyone who all showed true community spirit. “It was that community spirit that saved the Centre in 2013 and it was great to see the same spirit again when we needed it. “On behalf of all the trustees and myself, we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone for their support, not only that day in the face of such adversity, but for their continued support and best wishes since we re-opened.”
