CHANNEL SWIMMER RAISES £3,000 JOE Milnes, who swam with Stocksbridge Pentaqua for nine years, has just returned from Dover where he completed a cross channel swim to France in 12 hours and 10 minutes, raising over £3,000 for charity in the process. Ten years ago he took part in a team relay cross channel swim which left him with the ambition to one day complete a solo crossing. In addition to the crew, two friends - Aaron and Jess - accompanied Joe on his challenge.
Joe’s previous challenges have included triathlons, marathons, and the Comrades Marathon in South Africa which is a double marathon run in under 12 hours, a similar time to swimming the channel, but he found the channel swim considerably more demanding both physically and mentally. Joe added: “It is good to know that local children can continue to train at Stocksbridge’s newly refurbished Community Leisure Centre, giving them the opportunity to fulfil their dreams and ambitions.”
Jess acted as his support swimmer joining Joe in the water for two one hour sessions. Aaron kept Joe supplied with regular drinks and nutrition and kept all Joe’s supporters on land updated with his progress via photos and videos on social media. His amazing live video of Joe swimming ashore in France was watched by over 50 people who sent messages of support and encouragement which helped Joe through his final push to the finish. His fantastic effort has raised over £3,000 for CLIC Sargent, a charity which supports children with cancer and their families. Joe paid tribute to his former swimming coach David Wright, head coach at Stocksbridge Pentaqua, saying, “without the foundations built at Stocksbridge Pentaqua all those years ago I wouldn’t have had a chance.”
