NEW SUPERMARKET SET TO GET GO-AHEAD DESPITE OBJECTIONS A NEW branch of Lidl could be coming to Chapeltown, despite hundreds of objections to the plans.
Morbaine Ltd and Ackroyd Abbott submitted plans to build eight houses and a retail food store on Thorncliffe Lane, Chapeltown. An agreement has been reached for Lidl to run the retail property should the planning get the go-ahead. And it has been recommended that it should be approved, with the final say being had at a meeting on August 4.
The proposed site of the new retail store and homes.
However, there has been strong opposition to the plan since it was first announced and now over 300 signatures have been collected over two petitions. On the planning application’s webpage, 59 objections have been lodged.

Among the concerns raised include that the area already has an oversaturation of supermarkets, and an increase in pollution, traffic and noise. However, there has also been some support for the plans with some residents welcoming a reasonably priced shopping option without the use of a car. Council officers have recommended approval subject to conditions. The report reads: “From the information submitted it is considered that the site can be developed for the uses proposed without causing significant harm to the amenities of adjacent and nearby residents or the character and appearance of the locality.”
