CAMPAIGNERS CLAIM VICTORY

ON July 14, Sheffield City Council’s planning committee backed campaigners against a new 93house development on farm fields between Deepcar and Bolsterstone – known as Hollin Busk. They voted 12 to one against the plans. The campaign has been supported by hundreds of local residents with both the Upper Don Action Group (UDAG) and Friends of Hollin Busk objecting to the plans along with councillors. UDAG called a public meeting on the proposal in February 2017, shortly after the new housing scheme was announced.

Since then there have been numerous on and off planning meetings, with local residents being uncertain of what was going to happen. UDAG chairman, John Hesketh, who is a former chairman of the Council’s planning committee, said: “This is a tremendous victory for the hundreds of local people who have opposed building what would effectively be a new village in open countryside.

“UDAG has fought against such a large development because it would be a major step towards accepting widespread building inside Sheffield’s ‘golden frame’. Our city is almost unique in Britain in being framed by glorious unspoilt countryside - hills, fields, moors, peaks, rivers and valleys.

“The Hollin Busk 93-dwelling ‘village’ would be built on farm fields, not an old factory site. The site is over the lane from Sheffield’s Green Belt and virtually adjacent to the Peak District National Park. If we build at this location, it is UDAG’s view that nowhere - literally nowhere - in Sheffield’s Golden Frame is safe.” Councillor Julie Grocutt, Labour councillor for Stocksbridge and Upper Don, said: “I am delighted that the council’s Planning Committee has rejected the Hollin Busk application. “The proposal was causing a great deal of anxiety to many residents – with over 500 individuals raising formal objections. As a local resi-

dent and elected representative of the area, I have spent a great deal of time listening to local people’s opposition to this planning application.

“At the committee meeting I made the case that the developer has no vested interest in what is built at Hollin Busk and that the proposed development would damage the ecology of the area, spoil the surrounding green spaces enjoyed by local residents and cause significant problems with traffic and parking. “I also told the committee about the problems with drainage at the site and that, I believe, it fails to provide proper community cohesion. Quite frankly, this is not a space on which to build homes.

The red star marks the proposed location of the 93 homes

the approach of ensuring developments meet local needs and of using brownfield sites as a priority. The message from today is clear – green sites should be protected.”

“I am delighted that the Planning Committee agreed with the case against the development, and I’m sure many residents will be welcoming this news today

In a letter which can be found on this week’s letter page, Friends of Hollin Busk said: “Friends of Hollin Busk was established in 2017 to campaign against this proposed development.

“Of course we need more homes throughout Sheffield but it has to be done in the right way, and I am proud of Labour councillors for

“It has taken almost three years for this outline planning application to be considered by the planning committee and during this time we

have tried to keep this issue alive in the local community. The local community came out in force to object to this application – 528 individuals and organisations posted some very comprehensive reasons why this development should not go ahead. “This is a huge victory for our local community to retain the open countryside views from Hollin Busk. However, this will not be the end of it. Hallam Land Management may appeal the decision.”
