Massive Support To Keep Sacked Deepcar Club Steward In His Job By Paul Humphries
A campaign launched to save the job of a club steward who was sacked and told he and his wife and their fouryear-old granddaughter were to be evicted from their home has gained massive support. John Clayton, who returned to Sheffield two years ago to take up the position of steward in the bar of the Lowood Club in Deepcar, was sacked in May and told he and his family had to leave their flat at the club by this Friday, June 12, or be evicted. But there has been mounting anger in the village and surrounding area that John and his wife Julie were not allowed a personal hearing with the club committee and then denied the chance to go to that committee and appeal the decision to sack him. That anger has seen almost 1,000 supporters signing petitions demanding
eviction be halted and the steward given his job back. A petition of members has gained 130 signatures and demands the club postpones any action until a full emergency general meeting of club members can be held at which evidence from both sides can be put. They vehemently contest the allegations that John and his wife have not run the club properly.
Support for John and his family has received a massive boost from a local community forum. A petition on the Facebook page of the Stocksbridge, Deepcar Surrounding Area Relaxed Rules Community Forum has seen over 800 people give their support. Lowoods committee responded by issuing the following statement; “We are not evicting anyone, the domestic property at Lowood Club is known as TIED ACCOMMODATION, it is an essential part of the job and also forms part of the remunera-
tion as the Steward does not pay for Gas/Electricity/Water Rates nor Rent. Regarding making them homeless, we didn’t, John did by losing his job. If his relatives can’t help them, then due to John caring for his grandchild, the Council most certainly will. If members were allowed to get involved in disciplinary procedures it would create pure anarchy. If someone was barred by the Committee, he could get 30 mates to request a special meeting and reverse the decision. Members can, of course, propose a vote of no confidence in the Committee and if passed the Committee would resign. Lowoods committee full statement can be found on this weeks letters page. The eviction is due to take place at Lowood Club this Friday morning.
