SUPERTRAM LINK BUSES AXED MP ‘very disappointed’ after Stagecoach stop Supertram link buses to Stocksbridge

The SL1 and SL1a tram link buses, running between Stocksbridge, Deepcar and Middlewood, where passengers could hop on a tram to the city centre using the same ticket, will no longer operate as part of the new timetable being introduced by Stagecoach from Monday, June 1. The cut comes as many bus services which were reduced during the coronavirus lockdown are being stepped back up by Stagecoach and other operators, with measures in place to prevent the spread of COVID19.

Miriam Cates, the MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, who only earlier this month had campaigned successfully for the SL1 to be restored, said she was ‘very disappointed’ by the latest changes. “Not only will it mean longer and more inconvenient journey times for many users, but discontinuing the Tramlink single ticket will significantly increase costs for people who need to get into central Sheffield and beyond at a time when household budgets are already stretched,” she added.

Tobias’ Marathon Fundraiser 9-year old with Cerebral Palsy completes his 26.2 mile charity fundraiser After 69 days of walking up and down his street in Sheffield, nineyear-old Tobias completed his Marathon Challenge on Sunday and hopes to add to his fundraising for two of the city’s charities which currently stands at an incredible £93,000. The nine-year-old, who has Cerebral Palsy and Autism, cannot walk or stand unaided. Yet, inspired by the efforts of Captain Tom Moore, he has been using his walker to complete up to 750m per day of the 42,200 metres needed to match the marathon distance. He is raising money for his school, Paces, and the Sheffield Children’s Hospital, where he regularly visits for treatment. Over the course of his challenge he has received support from his neighbours and friends, as well as South Yorkshire Police, local businesses and even Spiderman! Tobias said: “Wow. What a journey this has been. Never did I imagine I would be able to raise so much money or get so much support. It’s been really hard work and I’ve been incredibly

tired some nights but I wanted to keep going to reach my target. I’m excited to complete the challenge – and to have a rest!” His mum, Ruth Garbutt, said: “Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine we would get so much support from so many people and raise such an incredibly amount for these two amazing charities who care for Tobias, and our family. “As we approach the end of the challenge, I want to say thank you to those who’ve donated, those who’ve turned up and cheered us on, and those who’ve given Tobias the strength to continue. But most of all I want to say how proud I am of Tobias. He has always been my star and I have always known how special he is. Now, everyone else has seen that too.” Dr Spencer Pitfield, Chief Executive of Paces, said: “These past few weeks have been hard for so many people, but the fact that Tobias and his family have used the lockdown to do so much good for others is amazing. Every one of us at Paces is proud of him and what he has achieved.

The money he has raised will make sure other young people have the opportunity to realise their potential – as Tobias has done, and then some, over the last 69 days.” Paces, based in North Sheffield, supports children and adults with Cerebral Palsy and motor disorders. A specialist in Conductive Education, it has been supporting individuals and families across Sheffield, Yorkshire and beyond since 1997. They teach children and adults vital skills such as sitting, standing, walking, communication and self-care. The money raised by Tobias will go towards their major fundraising campaign to raise £3.5 million towards a new, state-of-the-art facility which will allow Paces to help more children and adults achieve the greatest level of independence they can through a range of supportive physical interventions. Donations can be made to Tobias at www.pacessheffield.org.uk/tobias.

Good news! We are now open again. The most recent government documentation, published mid May, states that, despite other non-essential retailers still remaining closed, homeware stores are now able to reopen. Throughout the closure, we have been working hard to make sure our store is as safe as possible for customers and employees. We now have social distancing signage, hand sanitiser stations and are making available a specialist spray for sofas, beds and other upholstery that cleanses that item once it has been ‘tried’ by a customer. In addition, we are also launching an individual appointment system and ‘virtual walk around the store’, again bookable by appointment. Contact us for more details on this or check on our website.

YOUR SAFETY AND THAT OF OUR STAFF IS OUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY!

www.looklocal.org.uk

Added to this, the location of both our stores means that our customers will benefit from lower congestion than might be found on a busy retail park, shopping centre or high street. In our experience, customers seeking to purchase large household pieces tend to do so on an annual, rather than weekly basis, so our expected footfall is significantly lower than is found in numerous other retail outlets. This makes it straightforward for us to implement social distancing measures without great disruption to staff or visitors in-store. Our large floor space also helps in this regard. We are very excited to be welcoming our customers back into store and hope to see you soon!

Council strongly advises Wharncliffe woods fire schools not to re-open Statement from Sheffield City Council on wider opening of schools and childcare settings from 1 June

Councillor Abtisam Mohamed, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, Sheffield City Council issued the following statement Sheffield City Council understands that this is an extremely challenging time for all living in our city. Following last night’s announcement, relating to the review of the current national lockdown arrangements, we have taken time to consider our position. We stated previously that in order to support the increase of children in nurseries and school settings, as a Council we need to be confident of our position against the Government’s 5 tests outlined on the 19th April 2020. A critical element to those tests included an effective national test and trace system being in place.

We have been advised by the Sheffield Director of Public Health, Greg Fell who has reviewed the local position and he does not feel assured that the recently announced ‘Test and Trace’ programme will be sufficiently well established and robust enough to be in place for 1st June. He has advised that the Test and Trace system should be in place and working effectively for 14 days before schools and nurseries begin increasing their numbers.

We are acutely aware that many schools may have already put systems in place for increasing numbers of children prior to this date. However, our priority must always be ensuring the safety of our staff and the children is not compromised when the numbers are increased. All settings will continue to remain open for children of key workers and vulnerable children as they have been since the start of the national lock down.

Whilst nationally the Government is requesting that schools and nurseries start to increase the number of pupils attending over the coming weeks, in light of the Sheffield Public Health advice we do not yet feel assured that it is the right time and are advising our schools and nurseries to delay increasing numbers until the 15th June 2020.

For maintained schools, where the Council is the employer, we are instructing schools not to increase the number of children attending more widely. For all other schools, academies, and nurseries in Sheffield, we are strongly advising that they also delay their wider reopening to the 15th June.

GIN DISTILLER SUFFERS CRITICAL BURNS A gin distiller has suffered "critical burns" after an "awful accident" at a Chapeltown pub. Firefighters, paramedics, police officers and even the Yorkshire Air Ambulance crew rushed to the Commercial pub just after midday on Tuesday 26 May following reports of a gas explosion at a premises in Station Road. Police confirmed that Paul Harrison 33, suffered burns in the blast and had to be taken to hospital with the premises evacuated as a precaution.

The explosion happened at Sheffield Distillery which is at the back of The Commercial in Chapeltown. A message on the Sheffield Distillery facebook site posted “We are extremely sorry to say that we are suspending orders from the distillery temporarily. We will update further when we can, needless to say we wish Paul Harrison our head distiller and his family our very best wishes and a speedy recovery.

Don Valley railway line fails in bid Campaigners seeking to restore passenger services on the Don Valley railway line between Sheffield city centre and Stocksbridge failed to secure any cash in the first round of the Government’s £500 million Restoring Your Railway Fund. But they have been invited to make their case to the the Department for Transport at a meeting in June, which could determine the project’s fate. Up to three passenger trains an hour would run between Sheffield city centre and

Stocksbridge, calling at Deepcar, Oughtibridge, Wadsley Bridge and Neepsend, under proposals drawn up earlier this year by Penistone and Stocksbridge MP Miriam Cates, Sheffield City Region Mayoral Combined Authority and the Don Valley Railway campaign group. Although no funding has yet been awarded, Ms Cates and representatives from SCR have been invited to discuss their plans next month with officials from the DfT. Miriam Cates MP said: “I’m really pleased that we've been

invited to meetings to discuss the precise details of the plans, as we were unable to submit the bid to the panel in person due to the coronavirus outbreak. The Don Valley bid was one of 60 applications submitted during the first round of funding. The line is part of the old Woodhead railway route, which closed to passengers in 1970, and that stretch still carries freight trains serving the steelworks at Stocksbridge.

Three fire crews were called out to a woodlands fire at 4:20pm on Monday afternoon at Wharncliffe Woods, Woodhead Road, Grenoside, Sheffield. A large amount of woodland was involved. Overnight the number of fire crews at the scene increased to six from Cudworth, Maltby, Dearne, Aston, Parkway and Doncaster. South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue commented “Firefighters worked hard tackling the

blaze and the fire is now under control.” The crews remained at the scene in the morning damping down. The cause of the fire is not yet know, an investigation will take place once the fire is completely out. Six fire engines were called out to a large fire at a waste management site in Sheffield at 9:50pm on Thursday 28 May on Parkwood Road.

Several piles of waste had caught fire. Firefighters used hose reels to tackle the blaze. To help prevent further fires like the Wharncliffe Woods fire. Firefighters are asking people to: leave the BBQs at home put your litter in the bin dispose of cigarettes carefully

Supported by his wife, Grace, David successfully completed this task and has, so far, raised £800 for the Rywanyana Community Trust. Rywanyana is a village in Uganda where Grace was born and is over 6,000ft up in the mountains near gorilla country. David and Grace met when David was doing Voluntary Service Overseas work in a nearby town. It had always been an ambition of his to build a school in Africa and Grace had the same desire. In 2012 they started raising funds to achieve this ambition and were soon joined by Doris Stubbs and later by Steve Lake. An inheritance of David’s soon enabled a wattle and daub school room to be built and 30 children educated. Grace started a sponsorship scheme as there is a lot of poverty in the village. Sponsored children have an education, school uniform and 2 meals a day provided at school. 19 children have accommodation in a hostel we

have built next to the home of Grace’s brother, Spencer. These are children who have been orphaned or abandoned and are looked after Spencer and his wife Peninah. We built a water tank, toilets a new kitchen a safe swimming space in a lake where children’s lives were being lost and swimming was added to the school curriculum. We also bought a food milling machine. In 2018 the team was joined by 4 new members Stuart and Barbara Marriott and Martyn and Mandy Kemp. Barbara, Stuart and Mandy have all taught in the school and Martyn has been a volunteer. Besides giving invaluable Teacher Training Barbara and Stuart have built up many useful teaching resources. After the death of their son, Daniel, in 2018, Stuart and Barbara set up Daniel’s Fund. This has funded the building of a Medical Room, the employment of a nurse, Brenda, who is also a qualified midwife and whose training was paid for by a sponsor found by Grace in the early stages of the project, the provision of medication and funding for transport to the local hospital.

Besides looking after the school children and their families Brenda deals with any emergencies in the village. This has involved delivering babies on some occasions Since 2018 we have needed another classroom, changing rooms near the Lake, a large covered area outside the school, another large water tank. Music has been added to the curriculum thanks to a Musical Group in Stocksbridge providing instruments. The village has recently been subjected to severe storms which have washed away homes and wiped out many of the crops on which the people depend for food. The funds raised by David will go to help to rebuild homes swept away, repair those damaged and help to feed children who are missing the food they would be getting at school as it is on lockdown. We are on Facebook under Rywanyana Community Trust where we currently have a JustGiving link and more information and pictures can be found. We are also needing more sponsors as we now have 205 pupils. None of the Trustees take any payment and pay all their own expenses.

Job Vacancy Due to the continued growth and development of the Centre, we are looking for highly motivated and customer focused people to join our team to undertake the following new role; Community Development Worker (Health & Wellbeing) Full time 37.5 hrs/wk. How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Your Letters MP Statement on the Reopening of Schools in the Sheffield City Council Area I am disappointed to see a statement from Sheffield City Council this morning instructing schools in Sheffield not to open more widely until 15th June. Last night, the Chief Scientific Adviser and Chief Medical Officer announced that the ‘five tests’ have been met and that it is safe for schools to re-open from 1st June to children in Reception, Y1 and Y6. So, from Monday, thousands of children across the country, including many in Barnsley, will be returning to school, and I am saddened that children in Sheffield will not be among them. While the risk of catching and spreading coronavirus may never be zero, we do know infection rates in the community are now very low, and it is important to remember schools have been open to vulnerable children and key workers’ children throughout the crisis, even during the peak of infections. But the risks to our children of not being in school are serious and growing by the day. As a mum and a former teacher, I know our children are suffering in many ways as a result of the lockdown and there is strong evidence to suggest gaps in education widen the attainment gap for disadvantaged children. The impacts of lost education and this lack of social interaction may have long-term consequences for our children’s life chances - including their health - and we must do everything we can to get children back to school and avoid a disadvantaged ‘COVID Generation’. Many parents will be expecting to return to work on Monday and now have only two days to notify their employer that they may no longer be able to attend. I have no doubt this will put additional financial pressure on families who are already struggling. Throughout the pandemic I’ve been in touch with headteachers across Penistone and Stocksbridge and I know how incredibly hard they have worked to put plans in place to re-open schools from Monday, following the detailed Government guidelines around how to keep children and staff safe. For teachers on the Sheffield side of my constituency, this announcement means their plans must be delayed, whilst Barnsley schools can return from Monday, putting their plans into action. I urge Sheffield City Council to reconsider this decision in the coming days and recognise how important it is to make sure that Sheffield children do not lose out. Miriam Cates MP

Dog poo Dear Editor, I’m just writing this email hoping that you could put it in your local paper To stress

how disgusted and disappointed I am with the amount of dog walkers we have around Deepcar, the majority of dog owners have picked up the dog poo but then just dumped it in the bag in the edges, so on our daily walk which we’re allowed on this Lockdown all you see is black bags, why can’t they just take them home. I know myself theres not enough doggy poo bins around this area but that’s something they need to stress to Stocksbridge council. So if you are one of these inconsiderate dog walkers please take your waste home and think of others who also need to get out on a walk without seeing these bags everywhere. We have lovely views out here so let’s keep it that way.. Kind regards Local resident.

KEEP THIS COMMUNITY SPIRIT GOING On behalf of all the team involved with the Stocksbridge & Upper Don Community Support Hub (CSH) we would like to give you a massive THANK YOU to the local community for coming together to help each other, whether that be through our service or a local mutual aid group or neighbour. Here is a summary of how your local CSH has been supporting Stocksbridge & Upper Don so far: Successfully attracted 50 local volunteers to support local people with errands such as shopping & prescriptions on top of supporting more complex cases, for example bereavement & benefit issues Continually supporting over 100 local people in need of support and with new cases each week. However, with some of our volunteers returning to work we now need YOU to help those in need. So even if you just have a spare hour a week to help our service, which could be something as simple as fetching some shopping or collecting a prescription for someone, then please get in touch by sending an email to csh@stocksbridgeclc.co.uk

CHANGES PLANNED FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT SERVICE IN SOUTH YORKSHIRE CHANGES to help reinstate capacity on South Yorkshire’s public transport network will take place next month, so people who have no alternative way to travel can make essential journeys and stay safe. It comes as demand for public transport is expected to grow next week, as more people start to travel under the UK Government’s restart programme.

to social distancing measures, yet demand will begin to rise again. “At peak times services are reaching a limited capacity and to reduce this pressure, it is necessary to reintroduce the concessionary pass time restrictions. This will allow for key workers to travel and keep older and more vulnerable passengers safe. “With more shops opening, we are focusing on getting workers to where they need to be, whilst maintaining social distancing on busy routes. As part of our recovery plans for South Yorkshire concessions will be reviewed, as we consider plans which benefit those most impacted by the economic downturn, including young people. “I would like to thank SYPTE, operators and people across South Yorkshire for their hard work to ensure we keep people as safe as possible, and key workers moving, during this challenging time. I would urge people to avoid making unnecessary journeys as much as possible.”

SYPTE Executive Director, Stephen Edwards, said: “Public transport will play a crucial role in shaping the Region’s recovery from Covid19. However, the public transport network as we knew it is going to be different for a while. The implementation of social distancing measures means buses, trams and trains can only carry a fraction of the number of people they would have before the pandemic.

Supertram services will be reviewed once details of the proposed ongoing funding support for light rail, announced by Government on 23 May 2020, are known.

“We are therefore asking people to continue to avoid public transport where possible, consider whether their journey is necessary and consider the time of day they travel. Those who do need to travel are being asked to maintain social distancing, pay by contactless and aim to wear a face covering where possible, wash their hands before and after their journey, and respect fellow passengers and staff. If your bus has a bus full sign, please be prepared to wait for the next bus and let people off the bus before you get on.

Plans are being introduced to help people to cycle and walk, where possible, instead of using public transport, such as making additional road space available for cyclists and pedestrians in some parts of the Region. Passengers that do need to travel are urged to plan ahead and check before they travel. Information about service changes and new timetables will be made available online at travelsouthyorkshire.com/servicechanges or by calling Traveline 01709 51 51 51.

“Our priority is the safety of our passengers and staff. We need everyone to play their part, so services can safely continue to connect people to places, as coronavirus restrictions ease.” The restriction on senior concessionary travel before 9.30am is due to be restored on 8 June to ensure the maximum possible capacity is available for key workers and others who need to travel for work.

Rats in garden

Dan Jarvis, Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, said:

To please for the moment STOP feeding the birds, or putting food out, as there has been sitings of many RATS! I have them in my garden m cannot sleep , over the last few days there have been at least 12 rats caught & many sitings! Sheffield council Will come out ( at a fee) to put poison down, but ask that we all help by STOPPING putting food out until The rats are Under control.

11

Measures are being taken to help accommodate passengers, to maintain social distancing at bus stops and interchanges, including removing some seating, cleaning of contact points and signage reinforcing government guidelines.

If you are reading this and need some help or support then also please do get in touch on the same email address above.

I wish to ask the people living on Helliwell Lane, St Mary crescent, townend lane, St Helens Road deepcar.

4th June 2020

“During the early stages of the coronavirus lockdown, I asked SYPTE and operators to ease the restrictions on concessionary passes, so people over 65 could access grace periods in supermarkets and make essential journeys to reach appointments.

“As lockdown restrictions are eased, we must continue to keep both passengers and staff safe, whilst ensuring key workers can get to work. Our public transport system is running at a fraction of its normal capacity due

LOCKDOWN DOORSTEP PHOTOS Local photographer Becky Kerr has captured these wonderful photos of families during lockdown.

Becky, explained “... The motivation behind the project was firstly for my own sanity and joy. I love taking photos, especially of people, and getting out of the house and chatting to people for five minutes at a time has been really good for my mental health. Also, with this being such a crazy and unique time I thought that it would be nice to document it for my local community. To capture families being families and to give them something to look back on and remember this time. Families featured range from Penistone, Oxspring, Deepcar and Stocksbridge, Holmfirth and Burncross. Becky’s work can be found on her instagram page @beckerrphotography

Steels goalkeeper signs for Manchester Utd Jacob Carney who has spent part of last season on loan with non-league outfit Stockbridge Park Steels, the club at which Leicester's Jamie Vardy started his career. Has signed his first professional contract, with Premier League giants Manchester United.

He travelled to Malaga in Spain for the first team squad's warm-weather training camp in February to accompany senior goalkeepers David de Gea, Sergio Romero, Lee Grant and Nathan Bishop. Carney also made just a solitary appearance for United's Under-23s in the 2019/20 season.

The 19-year-old, who has trained with the first team on occasion in the past season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, spent the majority of last season ‘between the sticks’ at Look Local Stadium.

Chris Hilton 1st team manager congratulated Carney with a message on his twitter page “Congratulations… time to push on now and show everybody your talent Keep working hard and learning.

The youngster gained valuable minutes on the pitch after regular goalkeeper Ed Hall was ruled out for the season.

Steels would like to say a massive thank you for the donations to their Crowdfunder page.

Former Chairman Allen Bethel has been overwhelmed by people’s generosity in collecting money from people in the ‘village’ who have so far responded to the clubs SOS call to raise £20k for essential ground maintenance and equipment. The money raised will all go towards ensuring Football will be played for all the hundreds of players and supporters of Stocksbridge Park Steels F.C. If you wish to donate please visit www.crowdfunder.co.uk.
