“We are all in this together, thank you for staying at home” ONE of South Yorkshire Police’s senior officers has issued a message of thanks after people across the county spent the Easter bank holiday at home, sharing “we are all in this together”. In a video released on Easter Monday, Superintendent Paul McCurry said a big thank you after a long weekend of enhanced police patrols was met with largely desolate streets, parks and roads across the county. Acknowledging that this will have been a difficult bank holiday for many, Supt. McCurry thanked the public for heeding government advice, staying at home and doing their bit to protect the NHS. This comes after officers spent Easter on duty, conducting targeted patrols and responding to any reports of suspected Covid-19 restriction breaches. The majority of these encounters provided an opportunity for teams to engage with the small number who were not adhering to government measures, reminding them that their actions have a direct impact on saving lives. Although officers in South Yorkshire have started to issue fines as a response to persistent or blatant breaches of Covid-19 restrictions, Supt. McCurry confirmed that the overwhelming response from the public remains positive and we have only moved to enforcement on a very small number of occasions this weekend, with engagement remaining the preferred option. Officers have issued a total of 24 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) between Good Friday and Easter Sunday, most commonly in response to non-essential travel.
