BODY FOUND IN HUNT Taking to the Thames to FOR MISSING MAN help treat brain tumours

FRIENDS Hollie Thomas and Kelly Gray have decided to take on the Thames Path Challenge to raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity.

A BODY has been found in the search for a missing Sheffield man who disappeared last Wednesday. South Yorkshire Police have confirmed the body of a man was found in woodland off Bolsterstone Road near High Bradfield on the morning of February 20.

Although formal identification has not yet been announced, it is believed that the body is that of 30-yearold Jamie Hague who was last in the Creswick Way area of Sheffield on Wednesday morning. In a statement, police said: “Officers looking for missing Sheffield man Jamie Hague

have found a body. The body of a man was found in woodland just off Bolsterstone Road, Sheffield, this morning. “While formal identification has not yet taken place, officers do believe it to be that of Jamie Hague. Jamie’s family have been informed and are being supported.”

This will be a 100km (62mile) trek from Putney to Henley, continuing through the night, taking between 20 and 36 hours on September 12 and 13. Kelly and Hollie are Therapeutic Radiographers who specialise in Stereotactic Radiosurgery, treating various tumours and conditions of the brain.

Kelly said: “We see on a daily basis the impact that having a brain tumour can have on a patient’s physical and mental health and would therefore like to raise as much money as we can to help support them and their families. “Whilst in our care we provide patients with as much support and care as we can; however there are always limitations to our efforts and this is where the amazing charities like The Brain Tumour Charity come in.” The Brain Tumour Charity is the world’s leading brain tu-

mour charity and the largest dedicated funder of research into brain tumours globally. Committed to saving and improving lives, were moving further, faster to help every single person affected by a brain tumour. They’re set on finding new treatments, offering the highest level of support and driving urgent change. Kelly added: “We really would be so grateful for any donation, please visit https:// www.justgiving.com/fundraising/kelly-gray9”

CHARLTON BROOK SPRING CLEAN

NORTH Sheffield volunteer group Friends of Charlton Brook enjoyed a successful first workday of 2020 last Sunday. Thanks to funding from the Co-Op Community Fund, a new picnic bench was installed near the dam while

a litter pick was also undertaken, which resulted in the removal of several tyres and an old settee. The Community Garden was also given a spring clean and the group would like to thank Sheffield Park Rangers and all of the volunteers who

took time out to help maintain this vital and muchloved green space in the city. New members are always welcome – you can find the Friends of Charlton Brook on Facebook or Twitter for the forthcoming workdays.

Penistone Ladies Choir raising funds with the help of the Co-op BACK in the autumn, Penistone Ladies Choir was chosen to benefit from the Coop Local Community Fund for a whole year from October 2019 to October 2020. During this year, the choir are keen to encourage Co-op members to choose the choir as their local cause. Every time a member buys selected own-brand products and services, 1% of the money they spend goes to local causes in their community, including the choir. The reason for raising funds is to help more people to experience the benefits of singing in a community choir, by holding recruitment events, open evenings and choir tasters. The choir, now 50 strong, is an award-winning choir meeting weekly on a Monday night from 7.45 to 9.45pm in St John’s Community Centre, Church Street, Penistone. It provides a forum for local women, to get together regularly to enjoy singing, learn new music and to be part of a fantastic supportive group. City’s highway network gets UK’s latest smart tech overhaul SHEFFIELD City Council’s highways contractor, Amey, has partnered with Connexin to build the latest UK Smart City, starting with digitised roads and the Internet of Things. Waste bins that say they’re full, grit bins which tell you they’re empty, drains which ask to be cleaned and trees which demand water. It sounds futuristic, but the technology is available, and it’s coming to Sheffield. By spring, the city’s highways contractor, Amey, will have created a digitised public highway network for Sheffield, with thousands of individual wireless sensors communicating via smart sensors. Working on behalf of the council, Amey is positioning itself at the forefront of Smart City technology to deliver a more efficient service for the citizens of Sheffield via a platform provided by Smart City operator, Connexin. Using an Internet of Things (IoT) foundation for its digital strategy, which sees computing devices embedded in everyday objects, enabling them to send and receive data, Amey will use Connexin’s CityOS platform to integrate, view, manage and re-

spond to information to improve highway maintenance services and revolutionise service delivery across Sheffield, from Stocksbridge to Mosborough. The platform will digitally connect essential highway maintenance services and inform operatives about the condition of street assets in real time. For example, when to; empty high street bins to avoid overflowing, water trees for preservation, refill grit bins ready for icy conditions and clear gullies to reduce the risk of flash flooding. By alerting operatives, Amey’s maintenance managers will always be one step ahead. Another huge benefit to the system will be a reduction in air pollution, with staff making fewer journeys across the city and being able to avoid spots where air quality levels are poor, to reduce the impact.

“Using technology in this pioneering way will help the Council in its efforts to tackle the climate crisis, whilst improving standards. Following installation, those who live and work in our city should see a positive impact in their neighbourhoods fairly quickly. Sheffield is an ambitious and proud city and where we lead, others will follow. James Haluch, Managing Director of Transport Infrastructure at Amey says: “Technology is becoming more and more part of our everyday lives.

Working with our partners in the public and private sector, we have to make radical changes to the way we deliver services. “I’m delighted that we’re embracing Connexin’s technology, which is one of the first times it’s been used in a city environment, that will benefit our service delivery and help to improve local communities. It will also offer a more environmentally sustainable solution to reduce our carbon footprint and maximise the use of resources, allowing us to provide a continually evolving service for Sheffield residents.

Your Letters School parking meeting Stocksbridge Town Councillors held a meeting recently for headteachers from local schools to discuss parking issues around our schools. It was disturbing to hear that someone was knocked down outside Stocksbridge Nursery Infant School whilst on the school run with his grandchild. The meeting was informed that despite several initiatives by the schools, including regular requests via their newsletters, people are parking inconsiderately and at times creating dangerous situations. Please could parents/carers be respectful when dropping off/picking up children from the schools in our area.

SUDOKU 3

I know most of us have eaten the last of our Christmas chocolates and are now making room for the Easter ones but I would just like to say a huge thank you to the kind-hearted people who made Christmas Day very special for a group of people who otherwise may have spent the day alone.

The paths around the Charlton Brook estate are full of it.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

We might have our own individualistic approach in paying tribute to these amazing people in our lives, our mothers. Of course, many mothers will love a nice bunch of flowers or a special meal out somewhere and our feature will help with that! As ever, we encourage our readers to keep it local when shopping for gifts! Here are some other ideas. One really different yet conventional Mother’s Day gift idea would be trendy tableware and one or many cookbooks to go with them. It is important to choose the present as per her style of cooking and serving.

If going in for something unique or different in terms of designs and patterns of the tableware or dinner set, then the same should blend in with the pattern of the tableware collection of your mum. The cookbook will serve to complete the Mother’s Day gifts set. The times have brought in many changes to the gifting trends as well. Thus, even in case of the occasion of Mother’s Day gifts that last longer and can be treasured as collectibles for a long, long time will find a better place in our mothers hearts. A thoughtfully compiled list of music or movies and better still both is a sure shot way of making this Mother’s Day memorable for the both of you. This is also one gift that the whole family can enjoy and bond over on family time. With the ever decreasing home space, the need for welcoming greens inside our homes is more prominent than ever.

Home gardens are a trend that are fast catching up with people integrating the inside and the outside of their homes. Your mother is going to love this innovative, unique yet useful gift idea. Indoor plants, small herbs in pots, flowering shrubs that grow in shade placed artistically on customisable stands would not only add to the beauty of your home but would also bring in a freshness to your home surroundings. Turn to our gardening feature for inspiration! In keeping with the flow of your house settings, you can choose a number of home decorative pieces as Mother’s Day presents for your mother. If feeling unsure of finding the right kind of decorations, it is not a bad idea to keep your mother in the shopping. No matter what you do, make you, and more importantly your mother, have a great Mother’s Day!

Students push the boundaries

BARNSLEY College Sport students have officiated a disability table top cricket tournament in partnership with professional coaches from Yorkshire Cricket Board, with local schools such as Wharncliffe Side Primary involved.

Table cricket is an adapted version of cricket, played on a table and specially designed to give young people with a disability the chance to play and compete in the sport. The games have been shown to develop teamwork, co-ordination, cognitive skills and social skills among players.

The tournament provided students with the opportunity to work with young disabled people and provided invaluable hands-on experience of being involved in a sporting event. Pupils from Greenacre School, Oakhill Primary Academy, Wharncliffe Side Primary School, Emmaus Catholic and

Church of England Primary School and Coppice School visited the College to take part in the tournament. Rhys Stacey, a Level Three Sport and Physical Activity student, said: “It has been great to have an experience of working and communicating with people with both learn-

ing and physical disabilities. It’s nice to be seen as a role model.”

leadership skills and enhances their future employment prospects.

Rohan Randhawa, Disability Development Manager at Yorkshire Cricket Board, added: “For the students involved in coaching and umpiring, table cricket helps to develop their self-confidence,

“The College’s facilities are amazing and all the students involved in organising and taking part have been enthusiastic, helpful and willing to learn. They should be really proud of themselves.”

PIGS HEAD INTO ‘DO OR DIE’ MATCH

Local Sport NEW STORAGE FACILITY AT DEEPCAR FOR CARAVAN OWNERS

Junction 36 Storage. *** NOW OPEN ***

2 acre site 5 minutes from M1 junction 36.

• Convenient location

STOCKSBRIDGE Rugby enjoyed a free week in their play off campaign, which has allowed rugby supremo Rhys Keenan to rest a few of his injured troops, as well as giving others extra time to prepare for this weekends ‘do or die’ clash with basement club Halifax. Given recent performances, Keenan is bullish about the clubs chances of success this weekend but points out, “I’ve been pleased with the efforts of late, despite the results however, these encouraging signs in defeat mean nothing if we don’t maintain the standards and take the positives into this weeks fixture.”

Prop Ricky James is one of several players returning after injury but influential half backs Frith and Westby both look set to miss a further period with their knee issues. Skipper Ricky Rowett and fellow back rower Reese Aspin will both face fitness tests in the week but both should be available for selection at the weekend. Towering lock Andy Beal is also due for a recall after a period of unavailability due to work commitments. The club’s hopes of achieving promotion have dwindled in recent weeks and they will have to go unbeaten for

The main pitch at Coal Pit Lane is suffering due to the recent storms and almost persistent rain. It is just about waterlogged and unfit for use so there is the real possibility that Stocksbridge will have to switch this weekends clash to an away fixture at Halifax. All at the club would like to congratulate long serving Bar Steward Mick Taylor on becoming a grandfather to twins at the weekend.

“The weather was causing more of the problems, we had a real swirling wind which felt like we were kicking against both halves but it’s very hard to sum that up from the sides, the players would be able to tell you about that, we had some hailstones, we had a little bit of sunshine, we had some rain but the players took those conditions out of the game.

“The front three linked up well; it’s the first time they’ve played as a three, Andy Ring, Luke Stewart and Nathan Keightley, Luke’s full debut was first class, the mid-field three dominated their midfield, got high on seconds, really drove us forward and allowed Ash Ellis time and space to pick out passes which allowed our full backs to really go and play as wingers and cause a threat down either channel. “The two centre halves stayed on the front foot, cleared their lines, won their headers, covered each other and it was an, excellent performance especially first half we came in at 3-0 and we were happy but just a little disappointed we weren’t four or five especially with the penalty miss, which is very uncharacteristic for Nathan and the other clear chances that we had. “We started well second half and they scored against the run of play, it came from nothing, it was a hopeful cross, it swirled in the wind Tom Charlesworth and the opponent have stepped to the ball, both missed it and it’s fell their left winger who’s just hit it first time in the bottom corner. “We’ve then reacted and created numerous clear cut chances and if it wasn’t for some good goal keeping and some better decision making we would have won the second half by two or three goals as well. “Overall it’s an excellent performance, an excellent reaction to having two weeks off and the disappointment of losing to Staveley.” * STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels’ game against Belper Town was called off due to a waterlogged pitch. They are away to Leek Town on Saturday, with a 3pm kick off. On March 7, Steels host Chasetown at Look Local Stadium. Kick off is at 3pm.
