SMITHY WOOD SAVED AS SERVICES PLANS ARE WITHDRAWN LESS than a month after the Woodland Trust stepped up their campaign against plans for a motorway service area near Sheffield that would have destroyed irreplaceable ancient woodland, the charity is welcoming the news that the plan has been withdrawn. Under the proposals from Extra Motorway Services, at least four hectares of the centuries-old Smithy Wood would have been bulldozed to make way for new services alongside the M1 at junction 35. Speaking after the withdrawal of the plans, Woodland Trust lead campaigner Jack Taylor said: “We are delighted that the application been withdrawn after six years of dogged determination and campaigning by the Trust and the local community. Smithy Wood is - for now at least - safe from development and will continue to provide a rich habitat

for ancient woodland flowers, birds and mammals. “Our most recent online campaign to fight the proposal, asking Sheffield City Council to reject the application resulted in over 3,400 objections. We are thrilled and relieved that our campaign, and those of others meant the developer saw sense to withdraw. “The Woodland Trust will not waiver in its support for ancient woodland and should any other proposal for this site materialise we stand ready to fight again.” The Woodland Trust were also keen to thank local campaigners who have worked so tirelessly to save the wood, including Sheffield Environmental, Cowley Residents Action Group, Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust and former MP Angela Smith.
Although happy about the news, Liz Ballard, Chief Executive of Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust, was keen to make the point that the fight was not over just yet. She said: “This is really fantastic news, working with local residents at Cowley, we have been fighting to save this woodland for seven years. “We had an incredible amount of support from hundreds of people across Sheffield answering our call to join our peaceful protest, write letters and submit objections. So this is down to everyone who took action to help Save Smithy Wood – thank you! “But this is not the end. For this wood to be saved for local people and wildlife we now ask St Pauls as land owners to work with us so that we can secure this woodland for future generations to enjoy.”
