MAN JAILED FOR SERIOUS ASSAULT A 31-year-old man has been jailed for nearly ten years after admitting seriously assaulting a woman in the Fox Hill area of the city earlier this year.

Shaka Williams, formerly of Brimmesfield Drive, Sheffield, had been due to go on trial at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday October 21 charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He pleaded guilty to this charge and was sentenced to nine years and ten months in prison. The court heard how Williams seriously assaulted his victim, 24year-old Britney, at a property in Fox Hill. Temporary Detective Inspector Tom Woodward from Sheffield said: “Williams’ assault on Britney was brutal and sustained. Her injuries were so severe that she was unrecognisable to her friends and family, which must have been incredibly distressing. “He has now accepted responsibility for this horrific act of violence

and will spend a considerable amount of time in prison.”

Britney was in bed on the evening of Friday April 12 2019 when she awoke to Williams knocking on her door. It was when inside the address that Williams started punching and kicking her to the head and body. TDI Woodward continued: “Britney was beaten so badly that she passed out, and the next thing she remembers is being in the hospital.” After the attack, Williams evaded police for the next 12 days, prompting officers to circulate a wanted appeal in the local media in a bid to locate Williams and bring him into custody. On April 25, Williams handed himself in to police. TDI Woodward added: “Williams’ behaviour following the assault was completely unacceptable – rather than face what he had done, he went on the run for nearly two weeks.

“I am grateful for the support of local media and the public for sharing our appeals to locate Williams earlier this year. This publicity meant he could not hide from his crime. “I want to take this opportunity to commend Britney for the bravery she has shown throughout our inquiry and for taking the courageous step of sharing some images of the awful injuries she suffered. “She had horrific facial and internal injuries, which have had a lasting impact on her life and she will require further operations in the future. Her loved ones told police that her facial injuries were so severe, she was unrecognisable to them when they first saw her in hospital. “This has been an incredibly traumatic experience for the victim and her family, and I hope that yesterday’s court hearing and sentencing offers some small comfort, knowing that her attacker is now behind bars.”

Penistone FM are looking for new radio presenters sible to everyone who is interested, no matter their level of experience. The trainees at the end of the four weeks will get the chance to present their very own radio show, in Penistone FM’s training studio.

PENISTONE FM are looking for new radio presenters, producers and reporters, in their brand new training course. Penistone FM will be running a new four-week train-

ing programme, that will take place one evening a week for two hours. The first wave will take place at the end of November, in their state of the art training

studio; in the heart of Penistone. The course will encompass the very basics of radio, from how a show is created and put together, to driving the sound desk; making it acces-

The aim of these training courses are to give potential volunteers the skills and abilities to go on to volunteer at Penistone FM within different roles at the station. However, the course is open to everyone whether they would like to volunteer with Penistone FM in the future or not, as many previous trainees have used the training course as a means of gaining different skills from confidence building to public speaking.

This will be the first set of evening classes ran in several years, as the training has previously been exclusively during the daytime up until now. This will allow local people, who study and work full time, the opportunity to take part in an exciting and vibrant part of the Penistone community.

ECCLESFIELD Parish Council will be holding a Service of Remembrance in conjunction with the Royal British Legion on Saturday November 9.

Applications are open now to anyone over the age of 16, for more information or to request an application form please email Martin.Sugden@ PenistoneFM.co.uk.

The local clergy and representatives from local groups will also be taking part in the service and parishioners are cordially invited to attend.

Please note places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, with the first wave of training beginning at the end of November and the second wave will take place in the New Year of 2020.

• CITY AND GUILDS LADIES’ HAIRDRESSING • CITY AND GUILDS MEN'S HAIRDRESSING

POPPIES made last year by the Stocksbridge community have been placed in the Clocktower Gardens once again in time for Remembrance Day.

• NVQ LEVEL 3 BARBERING • NVQ HEALTH AND SAFETY

This year there is the addition of a ‘memory net’. This has been placed on the white railings at the top of Nanny Hill.

Hello, my name is Liz. I am a fully qualified hairdresser in both ladies and men's hairdressing and have over 25 years’ experience. I have been working as a barber in Stocksbridge for over 15 years and my passion for cutting hair has led me to set up my new business as a Unisex Barber.

This net is for anyone to place a poppy or memorial in memory of family or friends. If you want to add a memorial to the net, please take along a pin or wire to attach it.

The haircut is the most fundamental part of hairdressing and I have learnt through experience, that millimetre precision and artistic flare is the key to a fantastic looking hairstyle.

My cuts vary from basic head shaves to sophisticated bobs, skin fades to asymmetric cuts and undercuts to long layers, which is why I am offering 30 minutes (for basic head shaves), 1 hour and 1.5 hour appointments for your precision haircuts. My prices are based on time, not gender. I will offer you a consultation, a first class haircut and give professional advice and tips to help maintain your new style. I look forward to meeting you.

BOLSTERSTONE CHRISTMAS FAYRE RETURNS CHRISTMAS wouldn’t be the same without a traditional village craft fayre in Bolsterstone and this year, it will take place on Saturday November 16. This year’s fayre will be starting half an hour earlier, at 9.30am, to give everyone even more time to browse around the stalls, enjoy some refreshments and meet up to chat with friends. It will end at 3pm. Local crafters have been busy creating unique, handmade goods ready for the fayre. Not only are their talents amazing but their unusual and traditional items will be on sale at inexpensive prices. A range of new craft stalls will join the old favourites this year. These include a specialist stall selling ales, ciders, mead, gins and rum, which you can try before you buy - there will even be Viking drinking horns for those of you looking for something different as a gift for friends and family.

There will be plenty of unusual little stocking fillers too, at pocket money prices. You will be able to try and buy homemade buns and cakes, including hand made Christmas cakes, and of course the ever popular buffalo burgers. Other favourites include jams, chutneys, Cornish pasties, jewellery, bags, toys, children’s books and puppets, cards and glassware together with bath bombs, pottery, wooden novelties, Christmas decorations, rustic signs and more. Lots of village volunteers are ready to help with the raffle and refreshments so that the homemade cakes, mince pies, tea, coffee and mulled wine will be served throughout the day. Teachers from local schools are also busy - preparing children to sing in the church from 9.30am through to 1pm and members of the local Art Society are arranging their exhibition. What better way to start the Christmas season than to

hear our local children sing and to see local artists’ work displayed in the lovely old Church of St Mary’s in Bolsterstone? Santa has agreed to come too! He will arrive in the morning and stay all day, with sacks of presents for children of all ages. Fantastic prizes for the raffle have been kindly donated by local individuals and businesses and all the money raised goes to charity or towards maintaining village public spaces. It’s a real traditional village community event and the team will be delighted to see you – whether you are from the local area or beyond. You can be sure to receive a warm welcome, whatever the weather! For details of Bolsterstone’s other festive events, such as the Christmas wreath making and table decorations evenings, visit www.bolsterstone.info.

Grenoside grandmother backs rare disease awareness week A SHEFFIELD grandmother living with a rare lung disease is backing a national awareness week to help more people understand her condition.

She said: “Every part of my daily life is affected in some way by PH. I struggle with breathlessness and tiredness even when making a cup of tea, or trying to get down the stairs, and I need help to get dressed. These are all things that people take for granted, but PH stops me from being ‘normal’. More people need to understand what the disease is, and how it makes people feel.”

Paula Hartley, 49, lives in Grenoside and was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension (PH) 12 years ago. The life-shortening disease, which affects just 7000 people in the UK, causes high pressure in the blood vessels connecting the heart and lungs.

A survey by the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA UK) shows 92 per cent of those with PH feel their emotional wellbeing has been affected.

Symptoms include severe breathlessness, fatigue, blackouts and swelling around the ankles, arms and stomach. There is no cure.

The research, released for PH Awareness Week, shows 53 per cent have experienced or been diagnosed with anxiety or depression, and 43 per cent feel lonely.

PH Awareness Week takes place November 4-10 and has been organised by the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA UK), a national charity based in Chapeltown.

Over half find socialising difficult and 70 per cent say the condition has lowered their selfconfidence.

Paula, who used to be a pub landlady, can no longer work and uses a mobility scooter to get around. An intravenous line - which she will have for life - pumps drugs into her body 24 hours a day.

“I feel very differently about myself now”, said Paula. “I feel I am not the full person I was before, and I feel very lonely. I’ve had

counselling, which did help, and my one-year-old granddaughter really helps my mental health too. But until you’ve walked in the footsteps of someone with PH, you’re never going to know what it’s like.” Paula receives treatment at the Sheffield Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit (SPVDU), based within the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. It is one of only nine specialist PH treatment centres in the UK. Iain Armstrong, nurse consultant at the SPVDU and chair of the PHA UK, said: “Pulmonary hypertension is an extremely serious condition that has a huge impact on people’s lives. You often can’t tell someone has PH just by looking at them - so encouraging understanding of this rare, devastating condition is vital.” To find out more about pulmonary hypertension or get involved with PH Awareness Week visit www.phauk.org. Whilst this should have helped the young girl that tragically died where you are purchasing a product of numerous ingredients, it didn’t. However, if you are buying a prepackaged kipper with only one ingredient, you can see it is a kipper, it smells like a kipper so you would expect it to be a kipper and the fact it may contain fish is printed on the packaging seems ludicrous. Brexit reply Dear Editor, My letter last week prompted a number of replies which raised points that I would like to comment on.

Brexit won the democratic vote and since then remainers have done their best to thwart it, well the genie is out of the bottle and cannot be replaced. Should Brexit be thwarted then I believe there will be a political schism for years to come, had Brexit lost this would have been put to bed the day after because we would have voted the right way and remainers would not have offered a second vote on it. I may not have liked that but I would have accepted the democratic vote and reverted to the election system.

Yours Sincerely, Kevan Godley.

The unveiling of Worrall’s commemorative stone with Sheila seated behind and, in a red jacket to her right is Eleanor of the Loxley Silver Band who played the Last Post. REMEMBRANCE comes in many forms. There are Sunday’s national televised services and quieter local gatherings at memorials on the morning of the 11th such as those in Bolsterstone and Stocksbridge.

East‌â€? and “Mr L Couldwell served in England for a year and then was sent to Africa. He stayed in Africa for a short while and then he was captured by the Germans. He has now been a prisoner for about 18 months.â€?

In our area we also have memorial halls in Oughtibridge and Worrall whose provision and maintenance are acts of remembrance which benefit communities. In many families there will be those prompted these official acts to take a moment to remember those taken or badly affected by past conflicts.

Besides servicemen and women, many others in our communities sacrificed their peacetime home lives to maintain our way of life: Bevin Boys conscripted into the mines, land girls, those children and parents whose families were torn apart by evacuation, workers in munitions and nursing to name a few. It is not to glorify armed conflict that we recall all their contributions across many campaigns, but to recognise our debt to them and the disruptions to their lives.

Even during the Second World War, in the summer of 1944, Worrall schoolchildren were invited to remember the ‘Soldiers of our Village’ by submitting a short essay. On September 1 this year, on the occasion of unveiling a stone commemorating the sacrifices of all those who served our country, Sheila Store, nee Longmore, read out her essay written as a 10 year-old. Introducing it she recalled having to, “put our gas masks on and walk through the gas-filled van, at other times hearing the sirens and at those times sometimes being told to get under our desks.â€? Sheila’s essay listed local soldiers service. She wrote: “Mr Ashton ‌ first ‌ went to Italy and while serving there a piece of shrapnel struck him in his back and so he went back to North Africa to a hospital. Afterwards he visited the Middle

It is evident from Worrall’s small community that remembrance remains strong since they donated generously to fund the stone and over 110 of them turned out on that wet Sunday wet day for its unveiling by Councillor Vickie Priestley. As the generations pass we can still say that, to use Laurence Binyon’s words, “We will remember them. Sheila’s essay is reproduced in full at http://btckstorage.blob.core.windows. net/site14040/2019%2010%20Sheila%20 Longmore%20Essay.docx.pdf Michael Smith

Maybe the upcoming election will enable parliament to sort this mess but I will not hold my breath.

As for the Irish border, there are numerous The ardent remainers believe the E.U. is the route to borders around the world, some of which are more some new Eutopia. All will be fine with this belief contentious, that are policed by technology. I will not go deeper into that as it involves religion but Remembrance suffice to say that in 2016 the Irish prime minister Enda Kenny started working with the U.K. government following the referendum and saw no problems with the border. The border only became a problem following the election of Mr Varadkar.

Firstly to Richard Webb, having read the elderly gentleman’s letter which as a Brexit voter I felt the letter was aimed at, he was calling me stupid and/or racist so I thank you for clarifying that I was none There are no advantages to being in the E.U. ,it just of these just that I was “misinformedâ€?. costs us more and more money. We should stay The E.U. migrants such as doctors, dentists etc will and reform say the remainers, well that worked still be here after Brexit (should it happen) just like well for Tony Blair who gave up part of our rebate before we joined the E.U. but they may well require for reform of the CAP. The E.U. took the money and did no reforming, Telegraph website 30/10/14. a visa. There are vested interests in the E.U. regarding the There are plenty of none E.U. medical and other CAP and the CFP which would never countenance professionals from around the world working in reform as it affects them domestically. The E.U. is the U.K. so I would suggest that the process for a democracy and their parliament can get rid of doing so is neither difficult or expensive (last figure civil servants says Mr Webb, just like let’s vote for a new president and given a list of one to vote for bandied by the govt was less than ÂŁ100). that was selected behind closed doors. So even the Jobs at the lower end of the scale raised in a number much vaunted E.U. parliament has no say over who of letters such as fruit pickers, carers, NHS workers is leading them. etc suggest that if we have to import workers for these when there are still large numbers of I am aware of the regulations regarding benefits unemployed that the job does not pay a salary of that they cannot claim for first three months and worth in this country or the benefits system is too then get 91 days of job seekers (no time limit on other benefits such as housing) when claimants generous. must then show “they are actively looking for jobsâ€?. A common complaint from unemployed people This is just like for a U.K. born claimant who must is that E.U. migrants undercut U.K. workers and keep a log of job applications etc but in reality they force wages down. just keep claiming. With the labelling “may contain fishâ€? there are After six months claimants who have become a numerous regulations specific to fish such as EC burden on the state can then be deported, there 104/2000, 2065/2000, 1224/2009,404/2011 etc are no figures for these deportations but from the and the over riding regulation 1169/2011 which

The latest published accounts for E.U. expenditure on food and drink etc makes my blood boil.

The uncommitted in the middle ground simply look at both camps with incredulity and to be honest I cannot blame them.

Mr Webb says the country is divided and we should find common ground, why. Following the upcoming election should my favoured political party lose would the winners alter their manifesto to find common ground with losers, no of course they will not.

This is a contentious issue and both camps are entrenched in their views. I will never change my view as I consider the E.U. a bloated undemocratic institution that is staffed by people riding the gravy train for all they can get. Why does the E.U. need ÂŁ10 million worth of artworks?

until the countries become equal and all are net contributers with only the actual E.U. organisation taking from the pot then that view may change.

Preparing Sheffield for winter exceptionally hilly and we have a large network of roads to maintain and keep moving. “It’s reassuring to know that when the bad weather strikes, the teams at Amey are well prepared and have plans in place to respond accordingly and in a timely manner. “But whilst we rely on the winter service to help us travel safely across the city during icy periods, we all still have a responsibility to take extra care, help neighbours, make use of the 2000 grit bins and ensure we park our cars appropriately so that the gritting vehicles can get through. Want to find out more about our winter service? Join us on The Moor between 11am-1pm on the 13 November to talk to our operatives about gritting and how you can help prepare for snow and ice this year.

THE council’s highways contractor is getting ‘winter ready’ in preparation for icy conditions over coming months. With 24 gritting vehicles already on standby, 24-hours-a-day, seven days a week until next May, the teams at Amey Streets Ahead are fully prepared to keep the city moving through snow events, should they arrive. And with the colder temperatures starting to creep in, the gritters have recently undergone their annual service to make sure they are in shape for the winter maintenance season.

For more information about gritting routes, grit bin locations and winter advice, visit www.sheffield.gov.uk/winter , call 0114 273 4567 or follow @sccstreetsahead on Twitter Sent out when ice or snow is predicted on the “As well as a team of drivers being on hand for real-time updates during bad weather and city’s hilly road network, the gritters spread ready to take to the roads when the bad to report empty grit bins. grit and plough before, during and after it weather arrives, we also have a good stock of snows. salt which is used to keep the city moving in snowy conditions. This year, the Streets Ahead winter mascot Yolly the Yeti will be sharing his top tips for driving safely on our roads during winter, as well as how to hand spread grit on the roads and pavements near your home. Last winter, Streets Ahead completed 71 grit runs, spreading around 7,942 tonnes of grit on the city’s highway network. The salt dome at the Olive Grove depot holds 9,500 tonnes of grit, ensuring that supplies never run low when they are needed the most. Cabinet Member for Environment, Street Scene and Climate Change at Sheffield City Council, Councillor Mark Jones said: “When winter arrives, we never quite know what to expect in Sheffield. “Andy will now be our full-time track curator and he know all there is to know about preparing a speedway surface because he has a wealth of experience both on and off a bike.

That’s because new track curator Andy Meredith, who agreed to become a key part of the Sheffield back room team, has been brought in to make sure the track will provide topclass racing as British Speedway’s top stars do battle in the steel city for the first time in 32 years.

“Belle Vue has been lauded for the quality of racing and we all know that Sheffield on its day is one of the best tracks in the business.

“Obviously, we are going to have to strengthen up and if that means looking abroad and looking at bringing some big names back to British speedway then that is something that I would love to do,” he said. “Now that it has been announced it is all about putting the feelers out and seeing who is interested. Obviously, the Grand Prix lads and the top riders in the world have got very busy calendars and it needs to fit their calendar. “So, once we have found out how the league is going to be structured, how it is going to look and how the fixtures will look, only then we will have a better opportunity to go to these riders and tell them how it is going to look and perhaps tempt them back over here. “We are blessed at Sheffield to have what I believe are the best facilities in the country and I challenge anybody to rival them now, especially with the new investment that we have had with a good carvery too, although I have never had it yet because I am too busy!

SIX POINT WEEK FOR CHURCH

STEELS MATCH FIZZLES OUT

PENISTONE Church earned six points this week, scoring seven goals in the process. They started with a 3-1 win away at Bottesford Town on Wednesday.

Cleethorpes 3-1 Stocksbridge PS STEELS travelled to Cleethorpes on Bonfire weekend for what should have been a sparkler of a game, with Cleethorpes third in the table, one point in front of Steels in fifth.

Ed Hall kept the score down with a string of saves

From the resulting corner, Scott Ruthven pulled a goal back. Steels started to have a spell after this and put pressure on the Cleethorpes defence.

Unfortunately, the game turned into a damp squib for Steels who never really got into the game until late in the second half.

Unfortunately, on 86 minutes, a speculative cross come shot dropped into the Steels goal to put out the fire of a possible fight back.

Cleethorpes went into an early two-goal lead and but for some excellent goalkeeping from Ed Hall, the game could have been over by halftime.

Steels will hope to put this performance behind them this Saturday when they host Worksop Town FC in what should be a cracking game at Bracken Moor.

The second half started in a similar fashion and three saves from Hall kept the score down.

Chairman Graham Furness is hoping to attract a good crowd for the first home league game since the end of September. Go along and help Park Steels to get back into the top five. Kick off is at 3pm.

Changes were made early and Steels started to come into the game with Kane Swinburn producing a good save from the keeper.

Church fell behind on 34 minutes with Jack McMenemy hitting the target. But straight from the restart, Church produced the perfect reply with Shaun Mundy levelling immediately. Man of the match against Maltby And it got better for Church and Mundy on the stroke of half time when he put them in front. Nathan Keightley wrapped up the win with the hotshot on target in the 74th minute. Saturday proved to be a nail-biting encounter as Maltby Main made the short trip to Penistone.

Main, Max Dearnley

Church looked to be cruising after 74 minutes – they were 4-0 up with goals from Ash Ellis, Shaun Mundy, Jordan Coduri and Danny Howes. But then on the 74th minute, Aaron Moxam pulled one back for Maltby and

just six minutes later, the same player scored from the penalty spot. Finally, Jonathon Hill made it 4-3 in the 90th minute, setting up a tense ending to the game. But Church held on to take the points.
