AWARD FOR ICE CREAM MAN

FOR 58 years, the local ice-cream man has been selling his treats to the youth of High Green and neighbouring areas. At 76 with no desire to retire, Mr Ronksley was finally awarded a Chairman’s Award by Chairman of Ecclesfield Parish Council, Councillor Terry Bawden, for his tireless dedication to his work in the community. People of all ages know Mr Ronksley. Dogs loved hearing the chimes of his van because they too got free treats. Mr Ronksley’s niece praised the chairman of the council for giving this award. She said: “Since March,

he has had just a few days off. Almost nothing can stop him from going out on his round.” Facebook has exploded with support for Mr Ronksley. “Worrall Road salutes you sir,” said one. “Mr Ronksley deserves and MBE,” said another. Many regard him as a local legend - serving the community doing something he loves. Cllr Bawden said: “Mr Ronksley enjoys interacting with the new generations, with pet owners - actually with everyone. Mr Ronksley is our legend, and long may he continue around High Green, Burncross and Chapeltown.”

High Green charity chief executive succeeds in Kilimanjaro challenge THE Chief Executive of a High Green charity and school which supports children, adults and families with cerebral palsy and motor disorders, has succeeded in his challenge of trekking to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Dr Spencer Pitfield travelled to Tanzania with Lucy Rodgers from Taylor & Emmet Solicitors to trek the 41 miles to 19,341ft (5,895m) above sea level - the top of the world’s highest free-standing mountain. They completed the challenge by reaching the peak on Friday (4 October) after a gruelling five days in some

of the toughest conditions on the planet. Together, they were raising money for the campaign to build a new home for Paces to ensure it has facilities fit for the future and to allow the charity to support more individuals in need of help. Speaking on his return to base camp, Spencer said: “It has been an absolutely exhausting challenge with temperatures of -15C accompanied by intense sunlight causing burns and the high-altitude causing nose bleeds. I am so proud of what Lucy and I have achieved and grateful for all the support from those back home.

“The intention of this challenge was to show what could be achieved and it has made me even more determined to ensure we make our vision of a new home for Paces a reality in the near future. “The fundraising from this challenge will help a huge amount, and we will continue to work hard to achieve our aim so we can support more adults, children and families from across Sheffield, Yorkshire and beyond in the years ahead.” You can still donate to the Kilimanjaro Challenge at www.kili4paces.co.uk.

A NEW class of children were welcomed to St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in High Green this September with a spiritual and heart-warming liturgy.

“Each child was presented with a beautifully illustrated card to represent the start of their new journey of love, faith and growth within St Mary’s School.”

A spokesperson for the school said: “The readings focused on the specialness of each child to God and that we are each made by God. The children and their families were prayed for.

They were formally welcomed into the school community by headteacher Alex Healy and given a rousing round of applause by the rest of the school community.

School pupils thank fire service visitors

Thursday night at the monthly finance meeting we will again discuss the new grants policy for our Ecclesfield Parish Council. I will do as I promised during my election campaigns and recommend that our EPC’s grants pot is divided equally between all 15 councillors, with as much autonomy as possible for each ward councillor in the allocation of the 1/15th of the funding allocated to them to distribute.

Got something to say? Email us at news@looklocal.org.uk Publication subject to space and content.

Publishing does not mean we agree with the content.

This will ensure each community within the EPC gets an equal share, preventing the imbalance of the past five decades. It will also ensure that when you vote in future, the individual that is elected to represent you has funding, that individual can prioritise for the ward they represent. It will be interesting to see how this meeting goes, as it could set the tone of the EPC for the next 18 months.

These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. There will be a collection for Help for Heroes after every show and their aim is to raise £2.5 million. With music from artists such as Queen, Dire Straits, David Bowie, Status Quo, Bryan Adams, Elton John, AC/DC, Whitesnake and so many more. You won’t see a bad wig here, this isn’t a tribute act this is simply paying tribute, the

best way possible to the legends in music. Escape the nine to five and let your hair down with the Rock for Heroes family! It starts at 7:30pm and with tickets priced at £22. They are available from the website at http://www.penistoneparamount.co.uk or from the box office on 01226 767532. The deadline is Sunday October 13.

NINE volunteers from various groups in Stocksbridge have recently passed a three-day First Aid at Work course thanks to funding from Stocksbridge Town Council. The grant paid for the training delivered by Inavision based in Fox Valley and also the room hire at Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre. The course included the use of defibrillators and as a result of fundraising by Stocksbridge WI there are now three of these in the centre of Stocksbridge. They are situated at Crown Cars, the library and DCSS garage. Greave House Farm Trust, who organised the training to include other local groups, now have five first aiders to cover activities on their Care Farm. They are currently running a crowdfunding appeal to employ two support workers to work with their clients with learning disabilities and autism. Anyone wishing to make a donation can click on their appeal page at www.localgiving.org/greavehousefarm.

SUPPORTERS GROUP ISSUES SOS FOR RAFFLE PRIZES

LAST year, Supporters of Oughtibridge School (SOS) ran a very successful Christmas raffle which raised just over an astounding £2,000 for the benefit of the children of Oughtibridge Primary School. That fundraising has contributed to the implementation of WOW Days for the children of the school which have included (to name a few) touch tanks, a visit from a planetarium and virtual reality headsets experiences where the children have toured volcanoes and Egyptian tombs from the comfort of their classrooms. These WOW Days really bring the lessons to life and the children and teachers adore them. SOS were also able to contribute to funding the arrival of the school bees this summer and would love to continue to provide a nurturing environment for the bees and a fantastic learning experience for the children. Not only would SOS wish to continue funding these projects in 2020 but they also wish to rejuve-

nate the school’s ‘Woods of Wonder’ where the children can play and learn outside in all weathers/ seasons. In order to achieve this, SOS are dependent on the support of donations for the Christmas 2019 raffle. Last year they were incredibly grateful to receive fantastic donations from local businesses and companies which they then marketed on their Facebook page, website, leaflets, posters and raffle tickets - these prizes ranged from bottles of fizz to Strictly Come Dancing Live tickets! Not only was this a fantastic opportunity for the donors to market their businesses and gain customers by offering free or discount vouchers for their services but they were also supporting the school and local community. If you would like to offer a prize to SOS then please get in touch via their ‘Supporters of Oughtibridge School’ Facebook page or email them at sosparentsassociation@ gmail.com - they would love to hear from you!

War Memorial let lead slip Oughtibridge War Memorial 2 Eckington 3 IN the second round of this year’s League Cup, former winners Oughtibridge War Memorial found themselves up against league newcomers Eckington from the second division of the Blades Superdraw League. Oughtibridge soon opened up a two-goal lead when Tom Galloway met a Adam Thomas corner to head home and shortly after Brad Fletcher finished off a slick move. Despite having striker Call Chambers and defender Galloway both come off with injuries, Oughtibridge should have made it three when Matt Harrison crashed his shot against the post.

The visitors then pulled one back before half time and the game started to swing in the away side’s favour. In the second half, the equaliser came and despite the home side going close to adding a third on several occasions, the visitors grabbed the winner with five minutes to go.

PENISTONE youngster Hugh Mackie took on the country’s best year 10 and 11 schoolboys at the National Schools Fell Championship at Giggleswick in North Yorkshire. Hugh claimed a top 10 finish with ninth place over the 5.5-kilometre course. Fellow Penistone runner James Fryers competed in the same race and also impressed with a top 50 finish in 42nd place. Elsewhere, another junior, Flynn Rogers, competed in a very muddy junior Ten 10 Ten race. Flynn was sixth overall and second in the boys under-11 category. Penistone runner Bryan Harrod guided a visually impaired athlete around the Chester Marathon in four hours and 10 minutes. A number of Penistone runners took on the Hedgehog Half Marathon and Rachael May-

ston produced a standout performance by claiming first over-45 lady in a time of 1-4340. First Penistone runner back was John Lawcock in 1-35-08. Gareth Cooke added another race victory to his long list of wins. Gareth won the Burringham 10k in a new personal best time for the event in 33-32. Andrea Henson and Stu Smith competed in the Hopton 10k near Mirfield both finishing around the hour mark. Results: Hedgehog Half Marathon - 20, John Lawcock 1-35-08; 53, Ian Sutcliffle 1-43-39; 54, Rachael Mayston 1-43-40; 93, Shelley Gill 1-50-14; 153, Craig Royston 1-57-19. Burringham 10k - 1, Gareth Cooke 33-32. Hopton 10k - 108, Andrea Henson 1-00-19; 142, Stu Smith 1-04-08.

KEIGHTLEY EARNS CHURCH POINT Penistone Church 1-1 Hemsworth Miners Welfare

NATHAN Keightley grabbed a share of the spoils for Penistone Church as they drew 1-1 at home to Hemsworth Miners Welfare on Saturday. Nash Connolly gave the visitors the lead with 25 minutes gone and that’s how the score remained going into half time. However, Keightley was on hand to level the scores on 56 minutes. Church manager Ian Richards said after the game: “Two very good competitive sides today, two sides who I believe will be at the top end of the table come the end of the season, two sides who do it in the right way, two football clubs who do it in the right way. “I thought for 65 minutes of that game we were the better team, we were the dominant team, I thought we caused them problems, we asked a lot of questions of their back four and midfield. “I thought they scored against the run of play and we let that affect us which is not like us and it took a little bit to adjust and get back to the way we were playing. We made a couple of tactical changes a half time and I though the players were excellent second half, they built a lot of pressure. “The goal was a piece of magic really from Nathan Keightley and it scoring it will do his confidence a world of good after being out with his ankle injury.”

Dan Emery at the steepest part of Pea Royd Lane © T Mayne

AS the hill climbing season gathers pace, Birdwell Wheeler Dan Emery was active on both days last weekend. On Saturday he rode Stocksbridge CC’s event on the notorious Pea Royd Lane, scene of last year’s National Championships.

His time of 3m 25.1s placed him 21st overall and fourth in his age category. The next day he rode in Sheffrec CC’s event on the famous Monsal Head climb in the Peak District.

A number of club members rode out to cheer him on and his time of 1m 48.4s placed him joint 78th out of 200 finishers and joint 17th in his age group. On Saturday Rob Parkes, Marc Peasgood, Alan and Lucy Bullock, Phil Adams, Kathleen Brankin

and Dave Hudson rode a 75 mile loop to Eyam in the Peak District climbing 7,200 feet in the process. This Sunday the club ride is to Carburton and Tickhill where Emery is again in action. The club’s monthly meeting is on Friday October

Stocksbridge maintain 100% away record Sheffield Oaks 3-23 Stocksbridge RUFC

STOCKSBRIDGE Rugby produced another encouraging performance at near neighbours Sheffield Oaks at the weekend, recording their second successive away victory and maintaining third spot in Yorkshire League Division Four in the process, eventually running out winners by 23-3. Head coach Keenan welcomed back stalwart front rower Ricky James to the pack and Pat O’Leary earned a starting spot on the flank. Oaks, as ever, were full of enthusiasm and endeavour. However, the Stocksbridge defence held firm to restrict the home side to just one penalty in the first half. Veteran flyer Joe Jones scorched in from a well-

worked back line move which neatly drew the cover away and the returning prop James got on the score sheet to complete another well-worked attack. Bowskill kicked a conversion and added a simple penalty to leave the half time score 15-3 to the Pigs. Stocksbridge again defended manfully in the second stanza and kept the home side scoreless, whilst adding a further try of their own through player coach Keenan after a catch and drive from a line out, 10 metres out. But try as they might to force a fourth and bonus point try, it just wouldn’t come. Bowskill added another three points from a penalty to complete the scoring. With per-

formances improving week by week, the mood in the camp is good, summed up by Frith, who said afterwards: “This was another good effort from the boys, we are all buying in and committed to having a good dig this year. It’s taken a while to get our standards back up but we are up for the challenges ahead Frith was just edged out of the Bradfield Brewery Man of the Match award by full back Scott Bowskill, who is back to his best and playing with some confidence after an indifferent start to the season. Stocksbridge are looking to maintain their good form as they entertain York-based Nestle Rowntree at Coal Pit Lane this weekend, kick off is 3pm and entrance is free to all.
