VANDALS TARGET SCOUT CENTRE POLICE investigating suspected arson and attempted arson attacks at two scout huts in Sheffield – leaving one completely destroyed are urging witnesses to come forward with any information which may help with their enquiries. At around 3.30pm on Monday June 17, officers were informed by South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue of a serious fire at a scout activity centre in White Lane, Chapeltown. The hut was completely destroyed in the fire, which is believed to have been started deliberately, at an estimated cost of £30,000. It was also reported that the next day, on the evening of Tuesday 18 June, a window was smashed at a second scout hut on White Lane, Chapeltown. Officers attended the scene and discovered evidence consistent with attempted arson.

The offenders may have left the scene in the direction of the nearby Trans Pennine Trail.

regularly happening at the site, including Mud Madness – Bluebell Wood’s muddy fun run.

Media and communications manager for South Yorkshire Scouts told Look Local: “Over the last few months, Hesley Wood Scout Activity Centre has become the focus of vandals and arsonists alike.

“Scouting is there to provide fun, challenge, adventure and life skills to our young members; by attacking our Centre with such gestures, this takes people away from organising events and programmes for the Scouts.

“Not only have they burnt down one building, the Jubilee Lodge, but have also attempted to vandalise two other buildings – including throwing rocks through the windows of the Royston building, and have attempted to break into outdoor vending machines. “We’re devastated about the arson and vandalism that has been inflicted upon Hesley Wood. Hesley Wood plays host to thousands of people a year from Scouts, Guides and School groups alike, not to mention the charity events

“It is imperative to add that the safety of all peoples on site is our top priority, the site is still in operation and is safe to use.” Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward. Were you in the area on the 17 or 18 June? Did you see or hear anything suspicious? If you have any information which may help our investigation, please call 101 quoting incident 290 of 18 June 2019 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

CHARITY FOOTBALL MATCH RETURNS

A CHARITY football match to help raise awareness of local male suicides will once again take place at Bracken Moor Sports Club this summer.

The Collins Cup charity football match and fun day will start at 11.30am on Sunday August 4 and will feature two teams made up of players from various local clubs and possibly some former professionals. Live music from Graham Lindley, Andy Hodgkinson and Emily Worton will be on from 1pm to 8pm. Jolly Tots will provide a kid’s corner and there will be face painting and food vendors. Male suicide is a problem which has affected many families in the north of Sheffield in recent years and local man Lee Shepherd has organised the match in a bid to help. The match is in memory of Garin Collins, a friend of Lee. Garin, originally from Edinburgh, was living in Australia but sadly took his own life in February 2018. He was a keen footballer, so the match is a fitting tribute. Lee says that he is also aware of a number of other male suicides locally in recent years and wants

to do something to help raise awareness of the issue. All proceeds from the day will go to Sheffield-based charity SToRMS (Strategies to Reduce Male Suicide). As well as the match, entry to which is by donation, lots of other things will be happening on the day.

There will be a raffle and auction with some top prizes such as signed Sheffield United, Barnsley FC and Manchester City shirts. Also on offer will be original artwork by Shaun Salmon signed by South Yorkshire’s England stars Kyle Walker, Jamie Vardy and John Stones. Two VIP packages for Bawtry paintball worth £300 each are also up for grabs. SToRMS is a small organisation set up in July 2015. It is a fund within the South Yorkshire Community Foundation, a registered charity whose goal is to improve the lives of local people. It was set up in memory of Dan McAllister who unexpectedly took his own life in May 2015, aged 19. Suicide is the biggest killer of men and women under 35 in the UK. The Office for National Statistics revealed that 5,668 people

took their own life in Great Britain in 2016. Of these, 4,287 were men. Men are three times more likely than women to take their own lives. SToRMS’ mission is to reduce young male suicides by facilitating widespread open discussions about suicide and promoting mental well-being and emotional resilience from an early age. They also aim to challenge gender stereotypes that prevent men from accessing help and highlight the relationship between alcohol and mental wellbeing. The first edition of the event, held in April of last year, raised over £4,000. Lee is still seeking out more auction and raffle prizes from local businesses. He said: “I would be hugely grateful of the support that anyone is able to offer to help support my fundraising efforts. “All donations will be properly thanked and acknowledged at the event and subsequently our Facebook page has over 800 members and each donation will be publicised across Facebook Instagram and Twitter.” Contact Lee on 07923574946 or Aussieblade@live.com

SHEFFIELD’S tractors are on the move and this time they have wings! Sheffield’s annual charity tractor rally will take place on Sunday July 7 with an expected 90+ tractors winding their way through the green lanes of Stannington, through Strines, Low Bradfield, Dungworth and Loxley. Now in its fifth year, the Tractor Rally has raised a staggering £25,000 for a variety of local charities including St. Luke’s Hospice, Weston Park Hospital and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. This year all monies raised will be going to the brilliant Yorkshire Air Ambulance in memory of local farmer Wilfred Wood who passed away last year at 91 years old. His family have chosen the Air Ambulance as recipient of this year’s contributions as they have had direct experience of this charity’s fantastic work when, several years ago, one of Wilf ’s daughters had a heart attack and was airlifted to hospital by them. The Wood family want to use this year’s Tractor Rally to acknowledge both their personal gratitude and that of all the hundreds of people the Air Ambulance help year on year. The 2019 Tractor Rally will start at Storrs Green Farm at 11am, making its way for a pit stop at Our Cow Molly around 1pm where there will be the opportunity for people to view all the tractors at close quarters. The procession will then make its way down through Storrs Wood, along Loxley Road, up past The Old Horns pub in High Bradfield,

down Peat Pitts Lane, through Helliwell’s Farm where it will then make its way through Worrall and Kirk Edge to arrive at the Nags Head pub on Loxley Road for approximately 3pm. Once the procession has finished the fun doesn’t stop there with a BBQ, auction and raffle taking place at the Nags Head along with family friendly activities including bouncy castles for the little ones. Anyone wishing to take part in the rally needs to register at Storrs Green Farm on the day from 10am. For those that wish to view there are plenty of viewing spots along the route. It’s a brilliant chance to see what could be over 100 tractors taking part in this fantastic event for charity. Yorkshire Air Ambulance was set up in 2000 and with the addition of the second Air Ambulance in October 2007, they were the first Air Ambulance in the UK to own and operate a Dedicated Air Desk in the UK. With the addition of the Air Ways Communication Systems, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance has developed into a sophisticated emergency service that provides state-of-the-art emergency medical care throughout Yorkshire. Despite this the charity relies entirely on the generosity of individuals and companies to help save lives across Yorkshire. As part of the Tractor Rally 2019, whether as spectator or participant you can directly support the essential work of this charity as well as having a cracking day out!

SHEFFIELD City Council officers together with local councillors from the West Ecclesfield Ward agreed last year that investment was required in local parks, and in particular the play areas. This follows the introduction of flower beds in the access point to Mortomley Park from Jeffcock Road in 2018. Funding is now available to modernise the existing swings and play areas, together with the introduction of new play equipment into the Mortomley Park play area. Who better to determine what sort of new play equipment is required than the children who use the park? Consultation will take place with the pupils who attend Greengate Lane Academy, St Mary’s Primary and High Green Primary Schools together with Paces Sheffield once the draft plans are completed. Work is expected to start towards the end of the year with completion no later than early next year. “This is a much needed improvement to an underutilised play area in Mortomley Park” said councillor Mike Levery, West Ecclesfield Ward, “with outline plans being prepared for improvements to the Angram Bank play area to follow.” “Our officers will liaise with other bodies such as High Green in Bloom and Ecclesfield Parish Council for advice and ideas in order to enhance the existing plan,” said fellow councillor Alan Hooper.

It’s not too late to make a Will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local Estate Planning Consultant of 13 years experience. I am an expert in helping people arrange their Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Pre-paid Funeral Plans. Along with my colleague Haworth Ward-Drummond we specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional advice, but with a personal touch. We offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

• Making a basic Will • Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney • Protecting your home for future generations • Pre-paid Funeral Plans We know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. We can visit you at a convenient time in the privacy and comfort of your own home to discuss your unique circumstances.

A visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all our professional services and work are fully insured and we are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all our clients are assured of the

highest standards of conduct at all times. All our clients (and their families) that we have helped in the past have been very happy with our services and tell us they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

Chapeltown Village Show It is hard to believe that 2019 heralds the sixth year of Chapeltown Forum staging the Chapeltown Village Show. This began as an experiment back in 2014 and the Forum were surprised and delighted at the success of this first venture. Each consecutive year has seen the show growing in popularity and exhibitors and entries have steadily grown in number.

Dear editor, Please find attached a few photos of a ‘bundle’ of bees I came across whilst walking along Armitage Road, Deepcar. I was wondering if any readers can shed any light as to how many bees are in situ, which species they are and what they are up to. Breeding with a queen?

GARY’S BIG CHALLENGE

Local News

BROOMHEAD SHOW TO CALL IT A DAY AFTER 29 years, Deepcar Brass Band have announced that the popular Broomhead Show will come to an end after this year’s event on Sunday July 14. The first Broomhead Show was in the summer of 1990 and has occurred every year since except for three occasions - the foot and mouth outbreak and twice due to flooding.

LOCAL man Gary Binns has given himself the daunting task of reaching the summit of 24 Peak District peaks in just two days of September in order to raise money for Breast Cancer Care. The first day will see Gary trek to nine peaks, including Bowfell, Esk Pike, Great End and the huge Scafell Pike. On the second day, he will climb the remaining 15, including Whiteside, Helvellyn and Lower Man. Gary explains: “I started my hiking journey last autumn. I was looking for a hobby and started hiking in the Peak District and instantly got a bug for the outdoors, I knew then that this was for me.

“I loved the fresh air and most of all the exercise I was getting, especially after been sat down all day at work, this is exactly what I needed. “I then started to go further afield to challenge myself even more. I took myself off to the Lake District, Wales and Scotland, completing the three peaks, the Yorkshire three peaks and more recently, started scrambling some of the highest ridges, which I love. “But I still wanted more - another challenge. So I decided to sign up for the Lake District 24 Peaks Challenge over two days. “Breast Cancer UK is very close to my heart. My wife’s

mum died of breast cancer in 2015 and more recently my auntie. “I thought to myself, let me push myself to complete this challenge and raise as much money as I can for this amazing charity. “I have kept training hard and still keep venturing into the Peak District and Wales whenever I can to keep up my fitness levels in time for the challenge in September. You can help Gary raise money for this great cause by donating directly to their fundraising page at https://www. justgiving.com/fundraising/ g-binns

The show attracts a wide range of craft stalls, artists and entertainment and has in recent years included performances by local musicians and groups such as Graham Lindley and the Branching Out dance school. As well as a BBQ, tea, coffee, soft drinks and home-made cakes and snacks, Bradfield Brewery are always in attendance to provide a refreshing summer drink. Chairman of the band James Broadhead said: “It’s very sad but the show cannot continue. To organise such a big show takes a lot of hard work from many people, and unfortunately, the number of volunteers has dropped significantly over the last few years. “This, coupled with the band becoming increasingly busy, makes it very difficult to put in the preparation work that such an event demands and deserves.” The band are devastated to lose a part of their heritage, especially as the profits from

the show provide 20% of the band’s income, allowing them to continue their performances in the local community through the purchase of music, instruments and other equipment, as well as free brass tuition. Paul Higham, the band’s treasurer, said: “It’s such a shame that 2019 will be the last show, and it will be difficult to fill the gap both emotionally and financially. The Broomhead show has taken a lot of blood, sweat and tears from many helpers over the last 29 years.” The band would like to say a big thank you to Ben Rimmington-Wilson who has provided the land and given wholehearted support for this annual community event. Deepcar Brass Band are always on the lookout not only for new players but for sponsors and volunteers to help with the running of the band – you don’t even need to play an instrument. If you want to contribute to the final Broomhead Show or support the band in any way, please email enquiries@deepcarbrassband.org.uk. The final show will be held at Broomhead Park, Wigtwizzle, S36 4ZA on Sunday July 14 starting at 12 noon. If you are unable to attend this year’s show you can still enter the annual ‘Cow Pat Competition’ to be in with the chance of winning £200. Please get in touch by email or call Paul on 07989 728474.

CROWDS TURN OUT FOR FUN DOG SHOW

THE first ever ‘Paws in the Park’ dog show organised by the Friends of Chapeltown Park was held last Saturday, June 22, and organisers have hailed it as a huge success.

The first three winners in each category won rosettes, certificates and a doggy toy, donated by Christine Brown and Mick Gethin.

A sunny morning and an informal atmosphere made sure that all the dog owners and families had a super time.

A spokesperson for the show told Look Local: “Our thanks to Christine and Mick, but also to SPAR, Leppings Lane for sponsoring the doggy treats.

After the dogs had been registered and given a number, owners could enter their hounds into as many or as few of the categories as they liked free of charge.

“Judy MacDonald baked some funny dachshund shaped biscuits for people and our thanks to everyone who helped make this event such a great success.

A total of 46 dogs were entered and many of them took part in more than one of the eight categories on offer; such as dog with the waggiest tail, funniest grin, best trick, most like their owner, scruffiest looking, fancy dress, loudest bark and best six legs!

“We will definitely be including this event in our programme for next year, so if you have any suggestions of different categories which we could include, please let us know on our Facebook page at Friends of Chapeltown Park.”

SATURDAY June 29 saw the annual Charity fundraising day at Stocksbridge Golf Club. This year, Alison Sedgwick and Steven Haigh, the ladies and gents captains, have nominated St Luke’s Hospice as their charity for the year. They have already raised over £3,000 from various events up to this weekend and were hoping for a big injection of cash from the day’s events – a combination of golf, an auction and a large raffle. The day went better than they could have hoped for and nearly another £3,000 has been added to their charity fund. With steaming hot weather for the golf, 85 gents and 13 ladies played throughout the day and in such good conditions the standard of golf was very high. The greens staff had worked tirelessly over the last few days to present the course in a fantastic way for the day.

Bev Sykes (28) was the overall winner in the ladies section with 39 points in the stableford format. The gents section was split into three divisions, sorted by handicap. Division One (handicap of 0-10) was won by Liam O’Sullivan (4) with a score of 39 points. Division Two (handicap of 10.1-20) was won by Trevor Mosely (11) also with a score of 39 points. Division Three (handicap of 20.1-36) was won by Charlie Binns (29), with a highly credible 42 points. Charlie Binns is a very promising junior, aged only 12! But the winner of the day was the captains’ fund raising. It started with some very generous tee sponsors, too many to mention, donating £900 to the charity fund. The evening celebrations saw the competition winners receive their prizes (pictured with the captains and Roger Broad, the club professional) and this was then followed by a charity auction, led by the president John Yeates, as the auctioneer. A wide array of items was auctioned, some golf related and some more practical items

including kitchenware. The auction raised a stunning £1,400 and there are still some more items available for bids. Members present at the event were incredibly generous with their contributions, often outbidding each other for items to get more money into the fund. The raffle then raised another £400, making the total for the day so far around £2,700 and this is expected to rise further over the next few days. Alison Sedgwick, lady captain, said: “The generosity of the club’s members, the visitors and all those that have donated items or sponsored tees is overwhelming. “Every year we get fantastic support for the Club Charity day and this year was no exception to that. We are already close to our target for the year, but we are going to carry on raising as much money as we can. £It is for a very worthy cause and there are many people in the city who have received fantastic care from the Hospice for their loved ones.”

Stocksbridge Rugby return for pre-season AFTER a well-deserved summer break, Stocksbridge Rugby supremo Rhys Keenan brought his charges back in for pre season training beginning on Tuesday July 2 at Coal Pit Lane. A recent players meeting, attended by over 26 senior players, laid the foundations and goals for an improvement to last season, where Stocksbridge ended up runners-up in the mid week cup and the semi finals of the league play offs too. The club are involved in a recruitment campaign, with several players of recent vintage also considering comebacks, as the playing side look to support the ambitions of

Local Sport

new club chairman, Andrew Bell. Club stalwart and former Silver Trophy winner Pete ‘Gulliver’ Windle has been added to the development squad staff, whilst the Lambert boys, Andy and James, have also offered their support. The club will need to improve on their discipline in all areas and pay more attention to the structure required if they are to achieve their ambitions of a top two finish in the league. However, as Keenan says: “This is well within our grasp, if we want it bad enough.” Strap in for an exciting season ahead, all players are welcome, new and old. Just turn up and enjoy.

Penistone veteran men win at Damflask relays

PENISTONE Footpath Runners men’s over 50 team recorded a famous victory at the scenic but challenging Damflask relays to be crowned champions against South Yorkshire’s best running clubs. A single leg of the relay consisted of a 3.5 mile loop around the Damflask reservoir near Bradfield. The team members and respective times for the legs were Daren Nockels (2022), Andrew Pearson (21-10), Rob Davies (22-30) and Matt Robinson (21-45). The senior male team came very close to achieving a bronze medal position but were narrowly edged out into fourth place on the final leg. Sunday saw the running of the Penistone 10k and there was plenty of success for the host

club. On a breezy day, first home and winner of the men’s race was Scott Hinchcliffe (33-25) followed in second place by Gareth Cooke (34-46). Gary Briscoe (36-28) was fourth to give the Penistone men first team prize. TIGERS MAINTAIN RECORD SHEFFIELD maintained their 100 per cent home league record with a 52-38 victory over Somerset in an eventful clash at Owlerton. Despite being reduced to four of their regular line-up, with Broc Nicol and Zaine Kennedy injured and captain Kyle Howarth temporarily suspended, Tigers were still able to convincingly see off a strong Somerset side. Stand-in skipper Danny King dropped just two points on another fine night for the home No.1 while Ty Proctor again looked impressive on his way to double figures. Simon Lambert produced an outstanding performance stepping in at reserve, winning three of his six rides, while fellow guest

py racetrack and that’s all it was today.

Teenager Drew Kemp can take positives from his contribution too while Josh MacDonald was in the thick of the action once again.

“It suited our boys, it didn’t suit theirs. Our boys enjoyed it, their boys didn’t. Our boys knuckled down and got on with it, their boys didn’t.

Team boss Simon Stead was most proud of his side’s composure and determination though after a controversial start to the meeting saw Somerset refuse to go to the tapes on two occasions before heats three and five.

“I can only apologise to the supporters for having to hang around when they should’ve been watching Speedway racing and we thank them for their patience - but it was nothing to do with us.

“At the end of the day, a home track gets prepared to suit the home riders and to give the home side their home track advantage,” Stead said.

“I’m proud of the way our boys didn’t let it get to them though and it was a great performance from them all.

“In years gone by, Sheffield has notoriously been a big, fast, grip-

Then it was over to the bowlers to close out the game at a baking hot Deer Park ground and apart from 40 from Jenkins and 50 from captain Whiteley the score was never threatened, with Chris Thwaites enjoying this ground again with 5-20 and Rowan Brearley taking two wickets and Will Cavanagh taking the crucial wicket of Jenkins. Then in next 20 overs the game was completely turned on its head by a partnership of 190 between Steve Perry and Matt Hague with Perry scoring a magnificent 159 including five sixes and 21 fours, and Hague scoring excellent 61 and his first half century for the club. A late cameo from Chris Thwaites (26) for a ninth wicket partnership of 40 took the away team to an impressive 308-8.
