Penistone Leisure Centre to be granted new 30 year lease CABINET members have approved plans to grant Penistone Leisure Centre a 30-year lease. Sporting Penistone currently uses the leisure centre under a tenancy at will. The plans request a community asset transfer of the leisure centre under a 30year lease. Penistone Leisure Centre, on Thurlstone Road, is a community run organisation that provides leisure and sporting activities for residents. It’s currently run by a few members of staff and several volunteers. The extended lease will secure the centre’s future and allow them to apply for external grants. Some funding has already been won, but it’s

subject to a long lease of the building. Funding will support the leisure centre’s plans to expand, modernise and improve the facility. These improvements will help increase social cohesion, benefit residents’ physical and mental health, and provide additional leisure and community activities. As demand for the facility increases, Sporting Penistone also plans to extend opening hours. Additional funding will help the site to build a meeting room, which will be available for treatments and therapy, arts and crafts, courses and adult learning. Plans also include a small café, which will also provide further space for residents to meet and talk,
which tackles loneliness. The leisure centre will support all ages and abilities, from toddlers through to pensioners. Matt Gladstone, Executive Director for Place, said: “Penistone Leisure Centre gives so much to the local community, from improving physical health to tackling isolation. A team of dedicated volunteers really make a difference in their local community. “This extended lease will allow the centre to do so much more with their facility, improving it and making it a place for everyone to enjoy. I encourage anyone living in the area to pop along and attend a class, try out a new sport or even consider volunteering time at this fantastic site.”

MINI POLICE ON PATROL
SAY hello, hello, hello to South Yorkshire Police’s latest recruits! The force has officially launched the new Mini Police programme in 12 primary schools across Sheffield and Doncaster, including a number of schools in north Sheffield.
Mini Police is an innovative and exciting scheme for Year 5 pupils who have been nominated by their schools to take part in a series of sessions delivered by PCSOs. Topics include the dangers of speeding, anti-social behaviour and online safety. Community Safety Project Officer Claire France said: “Getting children to take safety seriously isn’t the easiest task; it’s often the last thing on their mind, but this scheme makes it exciting and engaging. “The idea is that our officers deliver important messages to a small group of children who then go back to their lessons, the playground or the lunch hall and tell their friends about them. It’s empowering for them and it’s educational for the rest of the school. “Mini police are also encouraged to come up with events that the whole school and the outside community can get involved in.
They think of the ideas and then we will help them make it happen.
“For example, they might want to organise a litter pick, a gala, or set up a speed-watch scheme outside school.” As part of the programme, the children are provided with a mini police uniform and also build up rewards for the school, which can mean visits from specialist teams such as the Mounted Unit. The Mini Police scheme is coordinated by the South Yorkshire Police Community Safety Department, based at the Lifewise Centre in Rotherham. It has been funded by the Volunteer Police Cadets. Inputs will be delivered by PCSOs, supported by Community Safety Project Officers. Superintendent Neil Thomas, force lead for Citizens in Policing, added: “We have a strong Citizens in Policing agenda that encompasses a wide range of age groups and communities and mini police is great example of how we are looking to engage Similar Mini Police schemes have with the youngest members of already been set up in other parts of the country, including Lincolnshire our community.” and Durham.

The 12 schools already signed up to the programme in South Yorkshire include Ecclesfield Primary School, Greengate Primary School and St
Mary’s Primary Catholic School. The programme will run for two years.

High Green school receives ÂŁ10,000 for new equipment HIGH Green’s Paces School, the renowned leader in conductive education for young people living with Cerebral Palsy and motor disorders, has been awarded a ÂŁ10,000 grant for new equipment to support pupils. The donation for the school came from the Province of Yorkshire, West Riding Freemasons and was accepted by Chief Executive Spencer Pitfield and Trustee Norma Brindley at an event this month. Ruth Liu, Paces School Headteacher, said: “We are now in our 21st year which means some of our equipment is very old and in need of being replaced.
“This donation will help us to do just that so we have the latest equipment which will support and enhance our unique Conductive Education programme which allows young people to receive the best start in life. Dr Spencer Pitfield OBE, Paces Chief Executive, added: “We are grateful to receive support from both the Department of Education and Local Authorities for our school core curriculum. But this funding is not always enough for some of the extra school equipment we need to give our pupils the best opportunities. “This donation will make a big difference to that aim and I would like to thank everyone who contributed to such a sizeable donation.
Care group receives lottery funding STOCKSBRIDGE Community Care Group have announced that they have received National Lottery funding to extend the work they do so that they can better help combat loneliness and social
isolation of older people in our area. The funding is for three years and the new initiatives will sit nicely next to the work they already do. The new funds will cover:
• Initial phone support for older people until suitable volunteer visitors can be put in place. • A website and marketing strategy so that they can better inform everyone about the work that SCCG carries out.
• A local information line for older people, and those associated with them, so that they can find out local information easier. • A bereavement group to help those who have been become lone-
ly and socially isolated by the loss of a loved one. If you want to volunteer or find out more about the projects please call 0114 2830141.

SHEFFIELD BRICKTROPOLIS WILL BE OUT OF THIS WORLD ASTRONAUTS and space rockets are set to land in Sheffield City Centre this summer as Sheffield BID brings back its hugely successful Bricktropolis. Building on the success of the World Landmarks trail last year, this summer sees a new Outer Space theme join the Bricktropolis programme – set to run from August 17 to 30. To celebrate 50 years of the moon landing, Outer Space is a galactic visitor trail of LEGO® brick models, all constructed by Bright Bricks – the UK’s only professional
LEGO-brick building company. Families are invited to take part in a journey of discovery that follows humankind from Earth to the stars, with an array of planets, astronauts, space vehicles and rockets to find along the interstellar trail. Find the Vostok I and Saturn V rockets, join Neil Armstrong on the moon and even meet a friendly visitor from outer space. There are 15 incredible space models in total. Standing at 1.9m tall, the Neil Armstrong model is made up of more
than 57,000 bricks, while the 2.8m-tall Apollo 11 Saturn V rocket has 68,583 bricks. Diane Jarvis, Sheffield BID Manager, said: “Last year, Sheffield Bricktropolis and its trail of world-famous landmarks attracted over 25,000 visitors. We hope to build on that success this year with a fantastic new outer space theme. “One of Sheffield BID’s key objectives is to keep Sheffield City Centre busy throughout the year. August can be a quieter time with students away and many people on their summer holiday, so Bricktropolis is great opportunity
Fox Valley team announce foodie line up for Food and Music Festival
to get families, residents and new visitors into the city centre and support our local businesses. “The trail is designed to encourage people to explore all corners of the city centre and not just the well-trodden routes. “In an age when retail and restaurants are facing increasing challenges, city centres really need to stand out and provide a diverse range of offers and activities. The Sheffield BID events pro-
gramme is a huge part of doing just that.” Sheffield Bricktropolis is once again an opportunity for Sheffield to celebrate everyone’s favourite childhood bricks. From little ones to big kids, Sheffield Bricktropolis will have something for all LEGO fans. Families can take advantage of this free event and explore the city centre as they discover hidden galaxies. The Interactive Building Zone will transform an empty unit into
a place for play, creativity and education. Free workshops and a range of fringe activities will ignite imaginations across Sheffield and beyond. Sign up for updates at www. sheffieldbricktropolis.com. The count-down to launch has begun. We hope to see you there! Vision for parks and green spaces calls for creative ideas FOLLOWING the introduction of Sheffield City Council’s Building Better Parks initiative last year, the authority is calling for creative and enterprising ideas to help deliver its vision for better parks, woodlands and green spaces across the city. Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure, Councillor Mary Lea explained at the time, how through the initiative the council plans to improve facilities across green spaces in Sheffield, whilst generating essential income that will help to ensure they thrive for future generations. Some of Sheffield’s parks, such as Endcliffe and Millhouses, are extremely popular leisure destinations and already have brilliant facilities for visitors, but many, while offering beautiful surroundings and quality play equipment, are lacking in other amenities. Now the council is inviting creative, civic-minded entrepreneurs and businesses to share their ideas and explore potential options that will enhance visitors enjoyment of parks, woodlands and green spaces while preserving what makes them so special. A range of ideas will be considered including everything from
catering, health and well-being and leisure activities to one-off events and seasonal hospitality. Councillor Lea said: “We’ve been extremely clear that this is not about selling any land and that we will remain in control of any agreements made for businesses operating in our parks and I want to reiterate that commitment, to reassure everyone that this is as much about protecting our parks and woodlands as it is about improving them. “This could be the biggest investment in our parks in decades. We have a real opportunity to make the most of our many beautiful green spaces, generate important income and help local businesses thrive. It’s a win-win situation that benefits everyone. “Any initiative that adds social and economic benefit, whilst delivering a better service for Sheffield’s parks and green spaces, will be considered. We want to harness some of the creative, entrepreneurial talent that Sheffield is famous for, so if you have an ership of its green assets. PEAK DISTRICT VISITORS URGED TO TAKE IT HOME NATIONAL Park rangers are asking visitors to think twice before leaving litter in the Peak District, as figures estimate more than 60 tonnes of rubbish a year is being removed from some of the most popular locations. The Peak District National Park Authority, who manage 45 car parks and seven visitor centre and cycle hire facilities, say more than 50 tonnes of general waste and 10 tonnes of recyclable waste is collected by teams each year.
THE Foundation Stage team at Royd Nursery Infant School have been awarded the Charter Mark for Quality by the Sheffield Local Authority. Staff were presented with the award at the Sheffield Town Hall. Mrs Barker, Foundation Stage Lead, commented: “In order to achieve the award we had to complete audits of our provision, underpinned by our own Foundation Stage Vision. A quality assurance panel then looked at this and once it was approved we delivered a presentation to schools from across Sheffield”. Mr Sly, deputy headteacher, added: “We are delighted to receive yet another award that celebrates the high standards of education that the children at Royd receive. The Foundation Stage team have worked really hard to achieve this and it is nice to see that the Sheffield Local Authority recognise the quality of early years provision.”
The costs of dealing with litter and rubbish at National Park Authority-managed sites have now been estimated at almost £37,000 a year. National Park rangers say that simple measures such as visitors taking home what they bring into the National Park means that money can instead be spent on looking after the same locations
where litter is the biggest problem. A Sheffield Hallam University graduate study undertaken in 2018, suggested that one in four items of plastic-based litter observed by visitors in the Peak District were single-use plastic bottles, with around one in five items being crisp or sweet wrappers, or plastic bags. Over 80% of visitors said they had seen plastic litter at some point during their visit. A National Park spokesperson said: “Whilst our Rangers work hard to keep the National Park tidy for visitors and safe for wildlife, we also need people to help by taking their own rubbish home whenever possible. “The Peak District is Britain’s first National Park, and should be somewhere every visitor is proud and excited to visit. “What our data and surveys seem to suggest, is that many
items being disposed of in bins or discarded as litter such as single-use plastics and wrappers - are materials that can easily and cleanly be taken out of the National Park by visitors themselves.” The National Park Authority has said that whilst it already provides bins alongside its visitor centres and cafes, the biggest problems are experienced at more remote locations and car parks where litter is brought to the area by visitors directly. To support a reduction in the availability of plastics within the Peak District, the National Park Authority has recently added the sale of reusable water bottles to an earlier re-usable hot drink cup campaign - #MyPeakCup, launched in 2018. A number of National Park visitor and cycle hire centres are now also taking part in the ‘free refill’ water bottle scheme.

STOCKSBRIDGE Rugby are delighted to announce the acquisition of John Dudley to both the playing roster and the senior coaching team. A veteran of Rotherham Titans and with many Yorkshire County appearances behind him, Dudley brings a wealth or knowledge and knowhow to the club. JD, as he is known throughout South Yorkshire rugby circles, remains keen to prolong his playing career and has already assisted head coach Rhys Keenan with several invaluable coaching sessions over the recent years.
“This is an excellent signing for us,” enthused Keenan. “He will be an asset both on and off the pitch for us.” Dudley is expected to be formally unveiled at the Players Meeting in the Club House this Saturday at 1pm. Current, former and potential players are all welcome. This could be the shot in the arm that the club needs to get out of Division Four next season and also to bring some commitment, as well as potential new players to the club.

a big difference in helping build a community cricket pavilion the entire area can make use of and be proud of.” Cricket has been bringing the Stocksbridge community together for 157 years, but the poor state of the existing pavilion means that cricket may not survive in the community for much longer, unless funding can be raised to build a new pavilion. “It is estimated the build cost will be around £250K of which £100K of this will need to be raised by the club, with external grants covering the rest.
“As a club that has charity status, funds are tight and we are looking for as much support from local business sponsorship and the community as possible. We are about a quarter of the way to reaching our self funding target but still a long way off. “We will be hosting our fun day again this year on August Bank holiday weekend, Sunday August 25, to help raise further funds and have set up a just giving page. We appreciate we are asking a lot, but if people feel they can donate, please do, no matter how little it may be.”
Further details can be found by heading to the following: facebook - www.facebook.com/stocksbridgecricketclub just giving - www.justgiving.com/campaign/ stocksbridgecricketclub Or you can contact the club directly at stocksbridgecc@gmx.co.uk in respect of sponsorship options.

Blue lights boxing match raises over £10K OFFICERS from South Yorkshire Police and firefighters from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have battled it out in the ring to raise money for Hallam FM’s Cash for Kids charity. Eleven police officers and 11 firefighters went head to head in the charity-boxing match on Friday May 17 at the Niagara Conference and Leisure Centre in Hillsborough. Hallam FM’s Cash for Kids is a local charity that helps disadvantaged and disabled children across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw. Funding and grants are provided to community projects that support children who are suffering from poverty, abuse, neglect or a short life expectancy. Sergeant Ben Hall from the Burngreave Neighbourhood Policing Team in Sheffield organised the event with police driver trainer Steve Dakin and PC Darren Mckenna. Sgt Hall also provided weekly training to the officers taking part at the Ecclesfield Gym.
Ten of the 11 officers had no previous fighting or boxing experience and have trained every week since January- this was all completed in the officer’s personal time. Fighting in the ‘blue corner’ for SYP were PC Dan Fox, PC Dan Sawka, PC Nicole Palmowski, PC Josh Metcalfe, PC Alex Kirby, Sgt Jon Reville, PC Paula Sales, PC Alan Jepson, PC Jess Pearce and Chief Inspectors Stuart Walne and Paul Ferguson. Sgt Hall said: “I am extremely proud of all of the officers who took part, they all dedicated their personal time to train and learn the skills required for the competition. “The idea for the match started at my local boxing club where I train. I was talking to a firefighter who trains there too and we thought it would be a good idea along with an opportunity to raise some money for a good cause. We didn’t think we would raise this much, it’s amazing.” Alongside ticket sales, money was also raised through a raffle and the
AFC Church lift the cup AFC Penistone Church lifted the The Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA Association Cup on Saturday.
Denaby did rally in the second half but High’s second goal in the 72nd minute halted any chance of a comeback.
Playing against Denaby Main at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough Stadium, the Penistone outfit produced a blitz in the first half, racing into a 4-0 lead by half time.
AFC Church manager Steve Lenthall commented after the game: “We were superb today, I thought the lads were absolutely brilliant from the word go.
It wasn’t until the 35th minute that Church scored their first through Tim Council. But the floodgates then opened and Brad Kemp scored immediately from the restart.
“It was a long time to wait, five weeks from our last league game, so credit to our lads for their commitment for training twice a week to keep fitness levels up to be match ready for the pitch at Hillsborough and every one of the lads put a great shift in on the day.”
Just five minutes later, Council added his second before Reece High made it four just before the break.

Busy week at golf club
IT’S been a busy week of competitions at Stocksbridge Golf Club. It started on May 22 with the Dragons Section Horace Marklew Putter competition. K. Meegan (19) was a convincing winner with a net 60. I. Batty (17) and D. Broadhurst (18) both finished on a net 66, but the former took second with a better back nine. That evening the League team played Grange Park Golf Club at home, finishing the match at four points for each team. Liam O’Sullivan and Peter Finney both won their matches, with Matt Sedgwick and Dave Phillips losing.
The result consolidates the League team’s position in mid table. Saturday May 25 saw the Russell Bradbury Trophy take place with a strong field of nearly 70 players. The format was stroke play and J. Moss (21) won a tightly fought competition with a net 62. M. Tingle (14) was second with a net 63 and K. Harris (21) came third with a net 64. Chris Dale (4) scored the best gross with a 69 and came fourth overall. His round included an impressive four birdies. Bank Holiday Monday saw the gents and ladies sections join forces in the Millennium Trophy. The competition is a mixed pairs, al-
ternate shot format with only a half combined handicap allowance. In tricky conditions with strong winds and occasional showers, the scoring was understandably higher than usual for such a format. The eventual winners were Karl Harris and Bev Sykes (pictured in the centre with the club captains on either side) with a net score of 70.5. In second place were Liana O’Sullivan and Richard Grimmer with a net 72. Gents and Ladies Captains Steven Haigh and Alison Sedgwick were third with a net 72.5.

Stocksbridge Cricket club receives grant OVER 100 people had their say on how £28,000 should be used in Stocksbridge, with 10 different projects vying for the cash. Early Steps Nursery secured £1,535 to expand its outdoor play activities, after topping the poll, and the Garden Village Community Association, which came second, was awarded £5,000 to modernise toilets at Inman Pavilion. Stocksbridge Cricket Club proved the biggest winner in cash terms, getting £21,465 of the £25,000 it had asked for towards a new pavilion. This was the first time such a vote had been staged by Stocksbridge Town Council, which plans to hold similar ballots twice a year following its success.

Children as young as eight were invited to take part in the vote and all 10 groups applying were invited to make presentations at The Venue. The public were allowed to ask questions before voting. Councillor Julie Grocutt, chair of Stocksbridge Town Council, said: “All 10 projects were very worthy causes and the local people spoke
and chose three very deserving winners.” Another vote is planned in the autumn and groups which missed out will be able to apply again. The money came from the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), which is paid by developers to fund the facilities and services which are needed to support new homes and businesses. The town council received the cash from Sheffield City Council, as legislation dictates 15 per cent of the levy collected in the local area must be retained for projects benefiting that community. Stocksbridge Cricket Club is triyng to raise £250,000 for a new pavilion. Matthew Price, who is on the club’s committee, said: “We would like to thank everyone who voted for us in the CIL event. We really are overwhelmed with the result. We desperately need a new pavilion. “There’s a long way to go but this is an amazing start and will make Continued on page 18
