LIFE IN JAIL FOR HILLSBOROUGH KILLER ON Thursday March 14, Danny Trotter of no-fixed-abode was sentenced to life in prison, to serve a minimum of 22 years for the murder of 31-year-old Gavin Singleton. On Sunday September 23 2018, the Yorkshire Ambulance Service received a 999 call from a member of the public saying that two men had been stabbed on Walkley Lane, Sheffield. On arrival, paramedics found Mr Singleton to be in a critical condition. Members of the public were performing CPR on him. He had sustained three stab wounds, one to the chest and two to his right leg. Paramedics arrived and treated Mr Singleton at the scene. He was then taken to the Northern General hospital where he underwent emergency surgery, at the time his injuries were described as life threatening. Sadly, on October 1 2018 the decision was made to withdraw life support, and five days later, Mr Singleton died.

Following the hearing yesterday Gavin Singleton’s family said: “We would like to thank South Yorkshire Police, the detectives who were part of this case and our family liaison officer who have all worked tirelessly in their efforts to bring Gavin’s killer to justice. Our family have very much appreciated the support they have received throughout this difficult time. “We are both happy and relieved with the guilty verdict, it won’t bring Gavin back but maybe he will be able to rest easier. “Gavin was a kind, happy, and well liked young man with lots of close friends and family. Gavin had a heart of gold and would do anything to help a person in need, even following his death he helped a number of people by being an organ donor. “This was a horrific and senseless knife attack. Gavin went out for a drink with friends and never made it home. Continued on page 2

ECCLESFIELD YOUNGSTER A HIT WITH OWLS SHEFFIELD Wednesday super fan Shay O’Grady was a special guest of the club on Saturday. As the Owls maintained their run of form with a 4-2 win over Blackburn, young Shay watched on from the comfort of the Directors Box, alongside Owls chairman Dejphon Chansiri. It was a well-deserved reward for the eightyear-old from Ecclesfield, who walked 16 miles from Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice to Hillsborough earlier this month ahead of the Sheffield derby. The walk was to raise funds for Bluebell Wood, where his cousin Evie-Mae receives care for a rare chromosome deletion order. Shay originally set a target of £400 but upon arriving in S6 for the Steel City derby, that figure stood at almost £4,000. So impressed by the youngster’s attitude, determination and charity spirit, Mr Chansiri made a pledge to Shay and doubled his fundraising effort and then rounded up the figure to £10,000. Shay was interviewed on the pitch at half time and after the game, was taken by the chairman to meet his Owls heroes behind the scenes! Presented with his favourite player Barry Bannan’s shirt, Shay stopped round to meet manager Steve Bruce and the players to cap off a memorable day.

KNIFE KILLER JAILED Continued from front page

“Not only is this devastating for his family and close friends, but it will have a lasting impact on the people who knew him, those who witnessed what happened that night and the professionals who worked on this case. “Knife crime is in the news on a constant basis at the moment, we’re all aware of it but when it happens to your family it just leaves emptiness inside the whole family. We won’t ever get Gavin back. “As a family who has suffered a loss from knife crime, we would urge anyone even thinking of carrying a knife to think of the consequences, not only to the victim and yourself, but to everyone involved. The lasting effect it has on families is devastating. Please think. You can choose not to carry a knife.” In sentencing Mr Justice Nicklin considered the impact on several members of the public who witnessed the aftermath of the stabbing, Trotter’s attempt to get rid of the knife in a river and the stabbing of Scott Fauvel, along with the fact that the

incident was linked to (and caused by) dealing drugs. He rejected that there was any element of self-defence in the stabbing of Gavin Singleton. He recognised the public concern around knife crime saying: “The Court of Appeal has stated that murders like this outrage and horrify our communities. “Anyone who goes into a public place armed with a knife or other weapon, and who uses it to kill, must anticipate punishment commensurate with that justified outrage and public concern. “Reflecting that, Parliament has acted by introducing the 25 year starting point in cases like this.” He therefore did not add anything further to the sentence. For the murder of Gavin Singleton, Danny Trotter was sentenced to life imprisonment. Trotter spent 170 days on remand awaiting trial and this was deducted from the 25 year sentence imposed, leaving 22 years to serve. Sentences were also given for

three other offences committed at the same time, and will be served concurrently with the term being served for murder. They were: Possession of an offensive weapon – sentence 12 months Supplying cocaine to Gavin Singleton – 15 months Section 20 wounding – 16 months Detective Chief Inspector Jude Ashmore said: “The message to anyone who is even considering carrying a knife is simple – don’t do it. The impact knife crime has is devastating and long lasting, and if you commit crime while carrying a knife you will feel the full force of the law. “Gavin Singleton’s family and friends have suffered a tragic loss that should never have happened and although yesterday’s sentencing won’t bring Gavin back I hope it gives them comfort as they try to make sense of what has happened.”

SHOPLIFTER SENT TO JAIL LOCAL resident Christopher Henighan appeared at court on March 18 for shoplifting offences in Stocksbridge, Deepcar and Penistone, and a breach of his Criminal Behaviour Order. Henighan was sentenced to 34 weeks imprisonment.

Building work begins on Grenoside Scout Hut extension

PCSOs in Hillsborough caught three motorbike thieves red-handed and managed to reunite the vintage collector’s item with the proud owner. PCSOs who were in the Hillsborough park area saw three male acting suspiciously around a motorbike which they were attempting to jump start. The PCSOs then managed to stay out of sight long enough to get colleagues from

response into the area and then assisted in chasing down the suspects who attempted to flee upon seeing them. All three were arrested before being interviewed and released under investigation pending further enquiries, whilst the owner of the bike was contacted and was reunited with his vehicle, which was largely undamaged.

GRENOSIDE Scout and Guide Group are pleased to announce that building work to extend their Saltbox Lane Headquarters has now begun. Thanks to the hardworking efforts of the Group’s fundraising team, as well as dedicated leaders and assistants and everyone who has supported their fundraising - a whopping £30k has been raised to fund the project. Despite a great team effort, this is still quite a way off being enough to complete the building work, so the builders will be completing the project in stages, as and when funds are available. The 144m2 extension will increase the size of the building and also add in an external toilet block and ‘wash down’ area, will offer better facilities for the children and young adults attending Grenoside groups - rainbows, beavers, cubs, brownies, scouts, guides, ranger guides and explorer scouts. It will also allow the Group to cater for bigger parties and fundraising events across

the year, many of which currently sell out in a matter of days such as Burns Night and Grenoside’s legendary Oktoberfest. The grounds of their headquarters will also be developed. Rubble from digging out the footings of the extension is being used to create a campfire circle and much work has been going off with assistance of the Royal Horticultural Society alongside our young members, including planting of bulbs. The group is having a work day on Saturday March 30 to plant a hedge of saplings help with this would be gladly received. Susan Hewerdine, part of the Group’s fundraising committee said: “We are delighted to have raised so much money and we are extremely grateful to the local community that have supported us in our fundraising activities, but we still have a long way to go to reach our target. “We have a jam-packed year ahead of us with a wide range of events to cater for the whole family.

“We would love to hear from anyone who can help with fundraising in anyway, or with fitting out the extension once the building work is completed.” To help reach the target, Grenoside Scout and Guide Group have a busy year of fundraising planned, starting with a Jumble Sale on Saturday March 23 at 12 noon and a Family Race Night on Saturday April 13. There is also a Fashion Show and Sale on Wednesday May 8 and a Eurovision Themed Disco on Saturday May 18. Wortley Rotary Club are also generously donating proceeds from their Millionaires Night, to the group’s extension fund. This event is being held on Saturday April 6 at Grenoside Community Centre and is always a fun night with the opportunity to dress to impress. Phone Pete on 0114 2467345 for tickets. For more details or tickets to any of the Groups events, please contact them via email grenosandg@gmail.com or phone 07503 217410.

MONDAY March 18 saw 19 South Yorkshire Police officers from across the force start a week-long intense training programme to become Small Unmanned Aircraft operators.

Saxton Mee Stocksbridge are proud to support Stocksbridge Community Care Group - a local charity working in Stocksbridge, Deepcar, Wharncliffe Side and Oughtibridge since 2008.

It follows an announcement earlier this year that funding had been approved to develop the force’s drone capability. Once training is complete, the force will have 24/7 drone coverage and aircraft will be able to be deployed to help officers with a variety of operations including; major incidents, search operations, crowd monitoring and proactive deployments such as warrants.

Their aim is to combat social isolation and loneliness for older people in our local area, so they may have a better quality of life.

The trainee pilots have been selected from across all districts and departments, including the roads policing unit, response teams, tasking teams, CID and neighbourhoods.

They work to allocate dementia companions, volunteer visiting and run the Dementia Cafe at The Venue, Stocksbridge, once a month. Most of their work is carried out by fantastic volunteers.

This week is not the first time officers have used the equipment, over the last month they have been having flying lessons from our existing drone operators, however this is the start of their formal training and assessment.

Saxton Mee Stocksbridge strongly believe in giving back to the local community – so don’t delay, call into the branch and see Sue or Helen to buy your tickets.

UNION MEMBERS PLAN STRIKE ACTION AT BRADFIELD SCHOOL TEACHERS at Bradfield School in Worrall are set to walk out on Wednesday March 27 after a ballot showed overwhelming support for industrial action in a dispute over the compulsory redundancies of 15 teachers. The school, which looks set to close its sixth form after a short consultation is in the process of restructuring its curriculum and has complained about poor national funding, but union officials are also concerned about what they say is “poor financial management” that has “jeopardised both the education of youngsters and livelihoods of teachers”. Toby Mallinson, Joint Branch Secretary for Sheffield National Education Union said: “Reluctantly members of the National Education Union have voted overwhelmingly

to take strike action at Bradfield School. “Amid a national teacher shortage, Bradfield’s governors and leadership have informed staff that 15 teachers may lose their jobs and morale is understandably at rock bottom in the school” “Our members care passionately about this community and have taught generations of youngsters in the area. Through no fault of their own, they face the potential loss of their jobs.” He went on to say: “Our union has been at the forefront of campaigning for more funding for schools, but we are concerned that a lack of leadership and poor financial management at Bradfield has jeopardised both the education of youngsters and livelihoods of teachers”.

“We think that it’s important that the school is transparent and open with the community about what is happening. That’s why many of our members were disappointed that the school chose not to run a public meeting when they proposed to close the sixth form. We’ve asked for full disclosure of the school’s financial accounts”. “Teachers only strike as a last resort and when they have no other options and we are seeking to avert industrial action through negotiations with the Employer. That’s why we will do everything that we can to avoid it and hope that the school is genuinely interested in working with us to solve the dispute.” The headteacher of the school, Dr Ian Gilbert, is currently unwell and not working at the school. Mrs Banks and Mr Wilson are deputising, although Mr Wilson is soon

leaving to take up a role in the Liverpool area. Mrs Banks will be acting headteacher and The Department for Education is supporting has funded the temporary appointment of an interim executive consultant, Mrs Julie Bloor. Mrs Bloor, who has a wealth of experience in supporting school finances, is assisting the governors and senior leadership team in securing the school’s long-term financial stability. In a letter to parents, signed by deputy headteachers Mrs Banks and Mr Wilson, the school said: “We have been informed by the NEU that they will be taking industrial action in the form of a strike on Wednesday March 27. “The action is in response to a restructure of staffing that has to take place due to the closure of the sixth form and the need to main-

tain financial stability. There is no requirement of unions to inform us of which members of staff will take action and it may be that they will not know themselves as there is no obligation on members of unions to obey a strike call. “The school cannot be closed ‘in sympathy’ with the strike and we will not do so. Our main concern however is the safety of our students and the levels of supervision that can be maintained. “Our intention is to keep the school open for sixth form and Year 11. The school will be closed for Years 7 to 10 inclusive. “For those students attending, school will run as normally as possible with supervised study and IT access wherever teachers are unavailable. We continue to work with the unions to try to resolve the matter.”

MAUSOLEUM OF THE GIANTS MAUSOLEUM of the Giants a monumental title fitting for a new spectacular sculptural installation showcase by artist Phlegm in his hometown of Sheffield. The artist, illustrator and cartoonist, who earned worldwide recognition with his intricate, narrative-rich murals painted on carefully selected public or abandoned structures, is continuing his exploration of mediums and scales and this time he’s gone big. After spending the last couple of years working on impossibly small copper engravings and ink drawings, he’s switched to creating larger than life sculptures as physical, 3D versions of his iconic characters. Five years after his solo showcase, “The Bestiary” in Shoreditch London and two years since he last worked in the city, Sheffield’s adopted son has created work on a new, grander scale. Taking over the Eyewitness Works on Milton Street in the city centre with his murals and changing the entire field of view with his visuals, he has produced an incredible, immersive sculptural installation.

Joy as fun loving group wins outstanding achievement award VALLEY React Community Project has been awarded the prestigious Duke of York’s Community Initiative Award. Valley React has been subjected to rigorous and robust scrutiny and were found to be of real value to the community, well run and an inspiration to others. Chairman William Emsley, who will be collecting the award, said: “This is in recognition of the outstanding achievement and all the hard work our volunteers and

members have done, during the last seven years, when Valley React has gone from five people who wanted to enjoy life together to today’s 750 members, who still want to enjoy life.”

ning fun activities every week, educational activities and trips out. They also did a pantomime last Christmas, with the community coming together for very little money.

Part of the assessment included interviews with volunteers and members and their very positive comments about the service and great community feel of the group made a strong impression on the assessors.

For more information on Valley React, see www.valleyreact.co.uk, Valley React Facebook and Look Local’s ‘What’s On’ page’.

Valley React are there for people aged 19 to 99, run-

Valley React’s 2019 programme is already out.

Massive sculptures occupy halls, corridors and rooms of an abandoned factory with their cumbersome bodies. Mausoleum of the Giants is a thrilling extension of Phlegm’s ongoing efforts to intertwine his surreal and highly imaginative work with existing deteriorating structures. Sheffield as the stage for this epic showcase was no accident. With local industrial buildings often forming the backdrop for his murals in the city, an old factory complex is the perfect location for presenting such a poetic and personal undertaking and bringing Phlegm’s iconic characters to life. Imagined as beings whose life spans over thousands of years, these peaceful beasts have seen rivers erode and mountains change. With their final days coming slowly but surely, the giants are ready for their eternal rest, giving everyone enough time to meet them, mourn them and make peace with their ending. The free exhibition runs until April 6. You can find out more about opening times at https:// mausoleumofthegiants.co.uk/

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Musical memories

Raise, educate and train a generation interested in manufacturing, agriculture and construction willing and able to spend periods of their lives actually working in fields and factories.

Call 0114 283 1100

I would like to express my sincere thanks to all those who attended the Musical Memories event in support of those people living well with dementia in our community. The event was organised by the Memory Time Cafe formerly Stocksbridge Dementia Cafe. More than 50 people sang, danced and made new friends to the music of Susan St Nicholas, cabaret vocalist. They enjoyed refreshments and scones, cream and Super Jam. The Musical Memory event will be staged each month on the third Friday so why not come along and join us. The April Musical Memories will be on April 26 as the third Friday is Good Friday. The Mayor Cllr Julie Grocutt, who is a regular volunteer at the Memory Time Cafe, presented Pat and Derek with their Life Story book written through the local TIME Project (This Is Me Entirely) supported by the National Lottery Community Fund. The Memory Time Cafe is on the first Thursday of the month, 10am to 12 noon at The Venue, Manchester Road, S36 1DY. Admission is £2 and this includes all refreshments. Everyone is welcome especially those who feel lonely and isolated. Come along and make new friends. Thank you again, Dave Cooper

Objection to housing plans that affect proposed railway

As soon as I see the Brexiteers are really fighting to get us ready I’ll be with them. When the job is done we can have another vote and that’ll be the best of Dear Mr Williamson, three counting the one to join. Whichever way it goes we’ll be in a stronger, fairer society. Thank you for consulting Don Valley Railway on the above application. Peter Morton. On behalf of the Don Valley Railway Project I object to revised plans for homes as set out in planning application X19/00054/FUL on the grounds Reply to Mike Levery’s letter of that the revised layout of housing compromises any access route from Station Lane, Deepcar to March 8 Railway Land such that a station at Deepcar can be accessed by public transport and other potential Mike, given I’ve been removing graffiti in an users. Renewable energy

Reform every IT system that runs trade, travel, borders, standards and transport (baring in mind Stocksbridge Community Forum on Wednesday the wasted 12 billion fiasco when the NHS tried March 27, 7pm at The Venue. to do it). Remember all this needs to be done by an army of mostly young people who mostly don’t want to leave any way.

Your Letters The shuttle option is clearly the most affordable option. However for it to work Deepcar Station needs to be located such that onward journeys to Deepcar/Stocksbridge urban area are possible, including by bus. Hence our concern that access to the line is lost. In terms of other possible locations for a station: to move it further South would make the sustainable access to Deepcar/Stocksbridge Urban Area unattractive due to it being further away; to move it further north would move the location onto the Steelworks section of line and interact with their shunting activities at Victoria Sidings. This will make coming to a working arrangement between Steel trains and passenger trains more complex and add to the cost of a scheme. A possible location for a station may be slightly further south where the new plan extends Station Road to form a Cul-de-sac. However, with extra traffic from homes proposed on this Station Lane extension, it is not clear if the route would be suitable for a bus service. We think maintaining the ability to construct a station at Deepcar offers further benefits for the developers. The rail facility will be an attractive feature for the housing and enable one and no car families to consider purchase of the properties where as currently they may only be attractive to multi-car households, as a potential rail service will offer better connectivity. The Railway would ultimately be of benefit to the wider area, and as part of their transport assessment they could claim that with the railway their development offers wider community benefits in the form of modal shift from car trips over the whole Stocksbridge / Deepcar Urban area. They could argue that any additional trips generated by their development could be offset by a reduction in car trips as a whole. Working with DVR could not be only be more sustainable but also give a better return to the developers.

2. A new Tram Train Route from Victoria to Stocksbridge with a 20 minute frequency DVR have no objection to the scale of the development, indeed more homes near a potential 3. An equivalent Heavy Rail Option from Nunnery station will ultimately offer higher demand should to connect with Tram, with stops at Victoria, the service be introduced. We would however urge Wadsley Bridge, Oughtibridge, Deepcar and the developers to ensure that a potential usable rail Central Stocksbridge, and, hub is possible and accessible from Station Lane 4. The half hourly Shuttle to Deepcar (as studied such that this potential future asset to the local by Arup) with an additional hourly stop at community is protected. Oughtibridge, and a connecting bus service from I trust this is clear, but if further information is Deepcar Station (at Station Lane) providing a loop required, please get in touch. around the Deepcar/Stocksbridge urban area.

In terms of cost of implementation, excluding optimism bias calculations, we estimate that the Cllr David Ogle, two tram options will cost approximately £200 High Green independent, million, an equivalent heavy rail option over £20 an actual local councillor. million but the Shuttle option only £2-3million.

Good Food & Drink Feature LOCAL Sheffield resident and Penistone Footpath Runner Peter Knight is known locally for running the miles dressed as an oversized bottle of Farmers Blonde. This year he has set himself an ambitious new challenge and will be donning a new costume in the shape of a beer glass. Peter is attempting to smash the world record for the fastest glass to run 26.2miles at this year’s London Marathon on April 28. Despite over 20 years running experience, Peter admits this latest challenge is an ambitious one and his training will need to be intense if he is to succeed in his attempt. The time for completing the marathon in this style of costume has been set at four hours and Peter is hopeful that he will be able to achieve a time within that. He has worked closely with costume makers Frenzy Creative to ensure that the costume meets the requirements of GWR and is as lightweight as possible in order to give him the biggest chance of success. Peter will be giving the costume a test run at the Sheffield Half Marathon on Sun-

day April 14 - keep an eye out for him and give him a wave! The idea for the glass costume was centred around Peter’s favourite tipple, Farmers Blonde and his previous running adventures in the Farmers Blonde bottle costume. Commissioned by Bradfield Brewery, the glass resembles a pint of beer and features the Brewery’s branding. Having previously ran for the Brewery in their Blonde bottle and Belgian Blue bottle costumes, Bradfield Brewery welcomed Peter’s idea to create a new costume for this world record attempt. Where there’s a lot of running, there is usually a good cause and this is no exception! Peter embarked on this ambitious challenge to raise funds for MYAWARE. MYAWARE is a charity that offers support to sufferers of Myasthenia, a rare condition that causes muscle weakness in a person’s voluntary muscles. These are muscles whose action is normally controlled by an individual’s will such as the arm and leg muscles. People with myasthenia have characteristically fatigable muscles and the harder people with myasthenia try, the weaker they get. The myasthenias are a group of neuromuscular conditions. They

are rare but also manageable. Myasthenia can affect anyone, old or young and of any gender or nationality. A work colleague’s family has shared their experience of the struggles this condition can bring to family life with Peter and he felt compelled to offer support to the charity via his running challenge. Peter Knight, speaking on this ambitious challenge, said: “I have been contemplating a world record for quite some time and at the beginning of this year I decided that 2019 was the year to do it! “Running is passion of mine and to be able to create a challenge revolving around something I enjoy doing, as well as supporting a great charity is a fantastic opportunity for me and I will be giving it my all to try and achieve the world record!” A just giving page has been created for anyone who would like to support Peter on his world record mission https://www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/fastglass A series of events are due to take place in support of Peter’s world record attempt in aid of the Myaware charity, details of which can be found at www.bradfieldbrewery. com/events

STOCKSBRIDGE RUFC made the trip to Halifax at the weekend and found a rain soaked pitch and a blustery gale making any effort to play open rugby almost an impossibility. It affected Stocksbridge as they lost by a single point, going down 13-12.

The pitch was only declared fit by the official at the last minute and the conditions deteriorated during the game. Head coach Rhys Keenan selected a huge pack, with one eye on the weather and Gentles retained his place in the starting line up on the wing. The home side started brightly and pressed Stocksbridge in their own half, using the considerable gale to good advantage. They were rewarded with a simple penalty on 10 minutes to take a narrow lead. Stocksbridge lost Ricky James to injury and he was replaced by Lewis Bowman, the visiting forwards gradually gained some dominance with Beal and the impressive Roebuck running the line out. The hard-working Newton seemed to be everywhere in attack and defence. What little open rugby was on offer was attempted by the visitors

with Gentles being bundled into touch from one such play. In a close game, goal kicking would prove to be vital and the home marksman was on target with a second penalty to nudge Halifax a little further ahead. A ball resembling a bar of soap made any real effort to play rugby almost impossible, there were many errors on both sides. Stocksbridge were guilty of trying to open play up a little too often and paid the price as the wind and rain combined to alter the course of their passing efforts. Bowskill was unable to slot a 40yd penalty, awarded for a high tackle on Whitaker. But on the stoke of half time, more good, tight phase play from the forwards lead to Gary Woodcock plunging over the line from close range, this time close enough for Bowskill to convert and give Stocksbridge a narrow 7-6 half time lead. The second half was almost exclusively played in the Halifax 20 meter zone with the visitors throwing the kitchen sink into their efforts and the home side defending heroically. Stocksbridge, trying to play rugby, got caught in possession as a Bowskill pass went astray and with more than a suspicion of a

knock on, the home winger won the foot race with Jones to the line to score a decisive try against the run of play and crucially the conversion was successful. Stocksbridge battled back into the game and scrum after scrum, line out after line out, opened up opportunities, but still the home defence would not yield. Hartley left the field with an ankle injury and the reliable Reece Aspin succumbed to a neck injury and had to be replaced - but still Stocksbridge heaped the pressure on without reward. Roebuck broke from a scrum and fed Frith, who was stopped in his tracks with a huge hit, forcing the withdrawal of the home winger through concussion, which was almost the game changing moment. Only the overworked official will know why he only awarded one single yellow card for persistent infringement as the home side’s desperation reached new heights and the visitors were unlucky not to have a penalty try award for repeated scrum infringements. As the match went into overtime, a bit of pace injected by Liam O’Leary from another scrum lead to a try, leaving the visitors a point behind with the conversion

to come. What followed can only be described as bad sportsmanship from the home side who ignored convention and shouted and screamed at Bowskill as he attempted to take what would have been the match winning conversion. The referee allowed it, Bowskill missed and the game was gone. The defeat means that the final fixture on April 6 away at Leedsbased Burley is a straight shoot out for the Shield Trophy, in a winner takes all contest. Despite the terrible conditions, both sides provided some entertainment and the XPert Travel Man of the Match Award went to Pete Newton, sponsored by Mr Pete Lakin, for a whole hearted and committed performance in a losing cause. “We got caught out trying to play some rugby,” said director of rugby Andy Tyers, “and we gifted Halifax a try. We have to treat the final fixture at Burley as a cup final, and we’ll be going all out to win it.” Tickets are selling fast for the club’s annual awards dinner in May, interested parties are asked to contact Martin Byes or Rhys Keenan to reserve a place.

DANCE SCHOOL CELEBRATES TROPHY HAUL A NORTH Sheffield dance school with pupils who have only taken part in competitions for the past 18 months is celebrating a 22 trophy haul after competing for the first time in the Epic East Coast Championships in Scarborough.

In a competition with over 350 contenders, eight pupils from the Erika Wilkinson Dance Academy (EWDA) came away with the trophies, which included three second places and three thirds. Erika Wilkinson who runs the school said:

“I am so proud of the girls’ achievements! We’ve only been competing for 18 months and I wasn’t sure how we would fare at a big prestigious festival like the East Coast Championship, but they were amazing. “We’re now looking forward to practicing harder and getting better and better so that we can bring more Championship trophies back to Sheffield. “With this weekend’s success and a brand new bigger dance studio opening at the end of March, 2019 is going to be fantastic for EWDA.”

Picture shows winning dancers Ella Howden, Valentina Diaz-Ward, Sophie Russell, Amelia Davison, Emily Macdonald, Faith Nurse and Carly Fish with dance teacher Erika Wilkinson

TIGERS LEGEND TO RETURN IN MEMORY OF RON

Ricky Ashworth rides a tandem at Leicester on Sunday with 1993 World Champion and former Tigers rider Sam Ermolenko on the solo bike.

SHEFFIELD Tigers legend Ricky Ashworth, who was left with serious head injuries in a career ending crash just over five years ago, will be back on the Owlerton track this Sunday. Ashworth was a firm favourite with Tigers fans and still holds the track record at his former track. And although he can no longer race on a 500cc machine with no brakes, remarkably he has taken to riding a tandem and completed laps at the velodrome in Manchester which attracted national headlines.

He did the same at Leicester on Sunday to launch the charity meeting in aid of the Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund. Now he will do four laps of Owlerton for the first time since his career ended – and he almost lost his life – at Sheffield’s 90th anniversary meeting on Sunday at 4pm. After the Leicester meeting Ashworth took to social media and wrote: “I had such a good day with my Dad, Step Mum and the Speedway family you guys are the best thank you. I wonder where next? The answer is Owlerton!”

Sheffield co-promoter Damien Bates said: “We are hoping to make a big day of it, it’s our 90th anniversary meeting so we want it to be a celebration and how apt that we have the track record holder here doing some laps after almost losing his life back in 2013. It’s a great story.” All seven Tigers riders will be in action along with a host of big names including double World Long Track Champion Erik Riss, French World Cup star David Bellego and GB international Steve Worrall.

IT is with great sorrow that Stocksbridge Park Steels FC have to report the sad news that long serving committee man Ron Sellers passed away peacefully in the Hallamshire Hospital on the evening of Monday March 11. Ron was 92 years old and still regularly attended home games to watch his beloved Steels.

He became a committee member in 1992 and has been a long standing vice president. Ron’s pride and joy was doing ground maintenance two mornings a week and also was on a turnstile on match days. A great man who will be sadly missed.
