POPULAR CINEMA SECURES NEW LEASE BARNSLEY Council has released a report looking to grant a new 25 year lease for local cinema and theatre Penistone Paramount. The Paramount, on Shrewsbury Road, is a community entertainment centre enjoyed by local residents that shows new releases and live theatre. The extended lease will secure the historic building’s future and allow the town council to apply for external funding and investments, helping them to continue running their current projects and services. The 348 seat venue celebrated its 100th year in 2014 and is host to many commercial and community projects. As a popular meeting

place, the venue helps tackle loneliness, by giving residents an accessible place to go and talk. Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “The extended lease on Penistone Paramount shows our commitment to local venues that provide entertainment and support for our residents. “This fantastic building is at the heart of the Penistone community and will continue to be so for the next 25 years. I urge anyone living in the area to visit the Paramount and support the fantastic work they are doing to help keep Barnsley a vibrant and welcoming place.”

COUNCILLOR SEEKS OPINIONS ON STREET ART

A HIGH Green councillor who spends much of his free time removing graffiti from the area has teamed up with like-minded volunteers to have a large mural painted at a site where vandalism was rife. Cllr David Ogle is now asking what the local community think of the new paint job. He said: “As many of you know, I remove graffiti tags as a volunteer in my community and have been doing this for years. “We have a particularly prolific tagger, Mist1, living on my street who has covered High Green’s streets, Sheffield and much further a field with his pathetic tag.

“One of the many areas vandalised was the area surrounding the new Thorncliffe leisure centre. Painting over this middle-aged vandal’s tags would have just given him a blank canvas to re-vandalise, so we independent councillors at the parish council and city councillor John Booker organised street artists to do the work in the photo. “For taggers to vandalise this type of art work is a big social no-no in the graffiti community, those who break these rules can find themselves excluded at best. So the street art should last and looks way better than what was on this wall be-

fore, I’ve sent in pictures but know space is limited, its all on my facebook page. “The next stage is to create street art on two other badly tagged areas, with kids from Mr Terry Bawden’s volunteer youth club and Councillor Lakin and Brownriggs organisational skills, with city Cllr John Booker getting the necessary permissions and boring but complicated paperwork sorted. “I know street arts not everyone’s cup of tea, but what’s been done looks way better than it was, it should last longer than a white wash and cost the same to do. Please give me feedback, thumbs up or down.

FOLLOWING on from the MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge quitting the Labour Party, local members have been busy organising a petition calling on the MP to resign and stand in a by-election.

Speaking on behalf of the Constituency Labour Party, chair Pete Bevis said: “We feel it is incumbent on Ms Smith to stand down and take the decent, honourable and democratic action.

With over 500 signatures secured in just a few days, the local Labour Party is calling for her to take a principled stand and contest the seat in which she was selected to stand to represent that party.

“This is the same person who has been previously calling for a People’s Vote in the lead up to Brexit, so surely she is under an obligation to fulfil our demand.

The petition is available to sign in various locations throughout the constituency as well as online.

“Previously respondents in the paper have referred to her so called integrity; now is the time to demonstrate that in her character.

ÂŁ25m redevelopment of land near stadium

Issue 1050

Call 0114 283 1100

Fly-tipping is national problem, with high levels of waste being dumped across the country. In Sheffield the council is trying to tackle the problem, through better monitoring, reporting and investigation processes.

The former Kennings Truck Centre, which closed in the 1980s is currently used as a car park on match days. Plans for site, which covers 10 acres, include a mix of retail, drivethrough restaurants and industrial units, designed by architects’ practice The Harris Partnership. The proposals include three retail units, eight storage and distribution units, two drive-through restaurants and a vehicle maintenance and repair facility, as well as access roads. Up to 250 jobs could be created. The developers said they had received interest in the development from national chains, with potential occupiers including a discount food store, coffee shop and builders’ merchants.

Two fly-tipping cases were heard recently at the Sheffield Magistrates court, where separate defendants chose to be tried at Crown Court. The council is obliged to engage a barrister to prosecute cases held at Crown Court. Simon Knowles, 52, of Sheffield was tried at York Crown Court on January 23. Knowles admitted dumping conifer waste and pleaded guilty to the charge of fly tipping. The courts fined Knowles ÂŁ224 and ordered him to pay ÂŁ1,000 costs to the Council. In the second case, Rayon Wiggan, 50, of Sheffield, was tried at Sheffield Crown Court on 1 February 2019. He admitted fly tipping waste including concrete slabs and other construction waste and was fined ÂŁ460 and

Fly-tippers pay the price as council clean up SHEFFIELD City Council is warning fly-tippers that they will be caught with two more successful prosecutions for the offence this year, totalling more than ÂŁ3,000 in fines and costs.

JAGUAR Estates and Bridges Fund Management have submitted plans for a £25m redevelopment scheme opposite Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough football ground on Penistone Road, Hillsborough.

ordered to pay £1,487 costs to the Council. In the case against Wiggan, a member of the public witnessed a van being used to dump waste, which was reported to the Council’s Environmental Enforcement Officers. The van turned out to be a hired vehicle which they traced back to Wiggan. The total in fines and costs for both cases was £3,171. Environmental Enforcement Officers can issue Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN) of £400 to anyone caught flytipping. In some cases vehicles will be seized during a fly-tipping investigation. The council takes fly-tipping seriously and last year issued more than 100 FPNs for fly-tipping and dumping of waste, totalling more than £14,000. Where the FPNs were not paid, or where an FPN was not considered appropriate, the council prosecuted. In all, 19 waste offence cases were brought before the courts, with fines and costs totalling more than £13,000. Four cases led to seizure of vehicles and ten cases are pending court dates.

council, through its Streets Ahead contract, assists local people in organising community litter picks. Last year more than 450 bags of litter were collected by local people keen to keep their communities litter-free, and another 50 bags were collected last month. Anyone interested in organising a litter pick can submit their interest through the council’s website. People who need to dispose of additional waste can do so at their nearest Household Recycling Centre, or they could use the Councils Bulky Item Collection Service which can be contacted on 0114 27 34567. Business waste must be disposed of using a licensed carrier, and each load of waste has to be accounted for by the business obtaining Waste Transfer Notes which must be retained for two years. Environmental Enforcement Officers may request to see these notes, and they may issue a Fixed Penalty Notice for £300 if the business does not have them. People who witness fly-tipping can report it through the council’s website or call 0114 273 4567.

Well done Angela Smith for having the courage to leave the so-called ‘Labour Party’. We know of course this is a far left extremist group run by momentum with a figurehead in Jeremy Corbyn and his shadow chancellor John McDonald who would bring this country to its knees with his Marxist principles.

OTHER’S DAY also one gift that the whole family can enjoy and bond over on family time. With the ever decreasing home space, the need for welcoming greens inside our homes is more prominent than ever.

Home gardens are a trend that are fast catching up with people integrating the inside and the outside of their homes. Your mother is going to love this innovative, unique yet useful gift idea.

Indoor plants, small herbs in pots, flowering shrubs that grow in shade placed artistically on customisable stands would not only add to the beauty of your home but would also bring in a freshness to your home surroundings. Turn to our gardening feature for inspiration! In keeping with the flow of your house settings, you can choose a number of home decorative pieces as Mother’s Day presents for your mother. If feeling unsure of finding the right kind of decorations, it is not a bad idea to keep your mother in the shopping. No matter what you do, make you, and more importantly your mother, have a great Mother’s Day!

LOCAL PoleFit Instructors Sheryl Moore and Gemma Barrett came up trumps earlier this month by storming the stage at Lincolnshire Pole Championships and returning to Yorkshire as the 2019 champions after winning first place. Their Toy Story theme blew the audience away and won the crowded audience of more than 300 people over, including the judges. The atmosphere in the room was incredible with everyone on their feet cheering for the real life Woody and Buzz Lightyear. Sheryl Moore and Gemma Barrett of JUSTDANCE first started training together in 2014 for their in house studio shows.

This year, they took it the next level by entering their first competition as a double act and needless to say their hard work truly paid off. The girls said: “Training over the winter months has proved difficult, it was always freezing and not easy to keep pushing through, we challenged ourselves with all new doubles moves both on and off the pole and couldn’t be happier with the outcome.” Their next studio show, which they will also feature in with their winning routine, is to be held on Sunday April 14 at The Academy Theatre in Birdwell, Barnsley.

Big win for War Memorial Ladies

Local Sport ERNEST THORPE Halifax Road, Thurgoland 0114 2882152

MOT’s £35.00 NO BOOKING REQUIRED

Mon - Fri 8.30 am - 5.00pm Sat 8.30 am - 12.00 noon

Oughtibridge WM Ladies 4-2 Eastwood Ladies OUGHTIBRIDGE War Memorial Ladies edged nearer top spot in the East Midlands Regional Premier League with a hard fought 4-2 win over a rejuvenated Eastwood Ladies who, despite lying bottom of the league, have started picking up results under former Chelsea player Nicki De La Salle, with star player Precious Hamil-

ton sure to cause problems for any team at this level. Fortunately, Oughtibridge aren’t reliant on one player and were quickly in their stride in this game with Millie Kenyon flying in to convert a great cross in the first five minutes. It was soon 2-0 as Kenyon turned provider for Maddie Bishop to bundle home her first goal for the club.

Further chances came and went but Oughtibridge were dealt a blow when Codi Melia got tangled up with Hamilton and had to come off with a nasty looking Achilles injury. The half time team talk of keeping it tight went straight out of the window as Hamilton burst through to score past Coran Wright via a wicked deflection and it was game on.

But Millie Kenyon capped a player of the match performance with a superb solo effort, muscling past three players before firing home to make it 3-1 and then Becky Shaw made it 4-1 with a cheeky back heel volley from Karla Burton’s cross. Hamilton saw yellow for a culmination of fouls and back chat and looked ready to lose her cool but it was Oughtibridge who were left

bewildered as the referee gave a straight red to the unlucky Katie Denton for what he deemed an over aggressive challenge. Hamilton then scored a peach late on to make it 4-2 but the War Memorial Ladies saw it through for a vital three points.

RESERVES HOLD NERVE TO TAKE VICTORY Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves 2 Handsworth 1 AFTER two defeats, Steels reserves got back to winning ways grinding out a good result at the Look Local Stadium against Handsworth reserves. Steels started the game well and created a couple of chances. However, Handsworth came into the game and took the lead with their first effort on goal. This could have shaken Steels’ confidence after their last two results but they reacted well and kept Handsworth under pressure. The pressure paid off just before the break when a good ball over the defence by Webster was latched onto by top goalscorer Townsend who lobbed the on-rushing keeper. Steels came out well for the second half, encouraged by the goal, and had the lion’s share of the possession but couldn’t find a breakthrough.

Crofts had three good chances from set pieces but failed to beat the keeper. At the other end of the pitch, home keeper Bond had to be alert to tip over a good effort from Bravo for the opposition. Steels brought on fresh legs to try and find a winner and again chances came and went. Whitham replaced the impressive Bruce who had run himself to a standstill and another sub Louis Shaw linked up well for Whitham to convert with a fine shot from a tight angle to give Steels the three points and a move back to third in the table. Steels reserves are back at the Look Local Stadium on Saturday March 9 against second placed Dodworth FC with a 3pm kick off.

NATHAN KEIGHTLEY was the hat-trick hero as Penistone Church took a fantastic 4-1 win over Goole AFC in front of their home crowd on Saturday. Keightley opened the scoring from the penalty spot five minutes before the break and Andy Ring extended Church’s lead seven minutes after the restart. Keightley added his second and Church’s third on 52 minutes but Carl Stewart pulled one back for Goole on 75 minutes. Keightley topped off a great performance with his third deep into stoppage time to put the icing on the cake. OUGHTIBRIDGE entertained current league champions Stannington Village in the first of a two-week double header. The visitors were in touch and with a game in hand on the top two but they had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Oughtibridge War Memorial. It was a tight and close contest as the scoreline suggests. In the first half the home side had to do the majority of the defending but still had the best chances in the half, first Ross Brown struck a post then Callum Chambers rounded the keeper but managed to shoot at the defender stood on the line. In the second half, despite Oughtibridge getting the better of the game, the deadlock was broken with 20 minutes left when former Penistone Church striker Lewis Dickinson picked up the ball on the edge of the penalty area and crashed home an unstoppable effort to put the visitors in front. Then Oughtibridge’s deserved equaliser came about when a corner wasn’t dealt with by the visiting defence and Chas Tunnard made no mistake. Oughtibridge continued to press and Matt Harrison almost scored with five minutes left but shot over, then man of the match Kurtis Turner looked like he had won it in the last minute but the goal was ruled out for offside. Kurtis was making his War Memorial debut after spending eight weeks injured.
