POLICE SEEK ARSON WITNESSES A STOCKSBRIDGE woman has spoken of the moment she awoke to find that her house on Viola Bank was on fire. The woman, who does not want to be named but is in her 60s, said that she was awoken just before 1am on Sunday January 20. The police suspect arson and have detained a suspect. Speaking to Look Local, the woman said: “I got out of bed and didn’t even take my phone with me, which I keep at the side of my bed.

known started a fire at a property in Viola Bank, Stocksbridge.

“He said there was hardly anything left of the door. The insurance company have been really good and so have my friends and family.

“The occupant, a woman in 60s, was asleep in bed and was woken up by her smoke alarm. Damage was caused to the front door, so the woman escaped the property through a window and was unharmed.

“The kitchen needs gutting and it looks like it’ll be about six months until I can return home. I’m not sure if it was meant to scare me or kill me. It doesn’t bare thinking about what could have happened to me.

“I walked into the kitchen where my front door is in the kitchen and saw that my door was on fire. There was no way I could get out of the door and that’s my only exit from the house so I had to climb out of the kitchen window.

“I’m appealing to anyone who might have seen anything suspicious – the person that did it might have darted down a side street in Garden Village and dropped a petrol can or something. Anything anyone saw could help the police, who have also been really helpful.”

“I was just in my dressing gown and didn’t have my phone with me so I had to run to a nearby house for help. A lady on Arthur Road opened the door to me and

BRADFIELD SCHOOL CONSIDERS DITCHING SIXTH FORM

BRADFIELD School is running a consultation on their proposal to close their sixth form due to being “deeply in financial deficit”. The school sent a letter to parents to explain the reasoning behind the “drastic and regrettable proposition.” The letter, signed by chair of governors Dr Moody and sent out last week, states: “The school is deeply in financial deficit. Ever since becoming an academy in 2012, it has been spending more each year on the education of our students than it receives in recurrent funding. “By September 2017, reserves had been exhausted. The school ended the 2017/18 academic year with an in-year deficit of £400k. By the end of the current academic year, the school is fore-

cast to have a cumulative deficit of over £800k. We are overspending at the rate of just over £2 per pupil per school day. “Many of you will know that the school is very badly funded on a per pupil basis. The expectation was that this would begin to change with the introduction of a National Funding Formula (NFF), which would address some of the historic unfairness in school funding around the country. This would have improved Bradfield School’s income by around £600k per year.

instead we must make savings from our expenditure.” Schools cannot lawfully go into debt, and the only way that Bradfield managed to stay afloat last year was through a large loan from the Education & Skills Funding Agency. The school have confirmed that they will require a further, even larger, loan this year. The ESFA is only likely to release that loan if the governing body can present a credible plan to balance the budget next year from September 2019. Continuing, Dr Moody says: “The overspend this year and last has helped secure an immediate stabilisation and recovery in the educational outcomes of our students after the low point of 2017 exam results and the Ofsted inspection.

delicious! be with “However, in July 2018 the government pushed the timetable for introducing the NFF further into the future. If and when it is introduced will be too late to enable the budget to be recovered, and

delicious! be with

“However, our longer-term future to provide the best possible education for current and future students lies in joining a Multi-Academy Trust (MAT). We will not be able to join any MAT until we have stabilised our budget and have an agreement with ESFA on how our accumulated deficit will be managed.” A number of proposals have been identified to reduce costs. These include closure of the sixth form to new entrants from 2019 and a reduction to the size of the school’s leadership team. Savings in the teaching workforce are also expected. The letter states: “We propose acting in all three areas to make savings, but with the bulk of the saving coming from the first two. It is important that as much of the school budget as possible is safe-

guarded for front line teaching of students. “More than anything, great teaching and learning is what delivers the best outcomes for students, and this proposal is unrelated to the quality of teaching at Bradfield. “With the current post-16 funding level, we cannot operate a sixth form based on low admission and broad A-level subject choice in a financially sustainable way at Bradfield. There is neither the demand nor the physical space to realistically ever be able to make it pay for itself. If we kept the sixth form and found other ways to balance the books, we would be doing so by taking out funding that was intended for students’ education pre-16. We don’t believe that would be fair or proper.”

Ever heard of CBD oil? Ever wondered how it could have a positive effect on the body and mind? A family run business founded in 2018 with the intention of bringing a pro-active, ethical approach to the CBD industry.

Irwin Mitchell have part-funded the position of family services coordinator for the next two years and Josie Walker has now been appointed to the role. Josie, who has a background in both the charitable and private sector – including a period working for a hospice – will focus on developing what Paces is able to offer families of those living with motor disorders and the support provided.

Our goal is to provide the public with a safe and trustworthy CBD site that has their best interests at heart.

Dr Spencer Pitfield OBE, Chief Executive of Paces, added: “We are very excited to welcome Josie to our team. The charity has exciting plans to expand the support we can give to both children in our school and adults, and family services is such an important part of how we support all those we work with. “I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the generosity of Irwin Mitchell. They have part-funded Josie’s position for just over two years, and

without such incredible support I have no doubt we would have really struggled to find the finances to fill this important position. Julianne Moore, Partner at Irwin Mitchell in Sheffield, said: “We are hugely proud to support Paces in part funding this vital role for the school. Over the years from our long-standing relationship with Paces we have seen first-hand the positive impact the work at Paces has on children with complex disabilities and their families.

We have done extensive due diligence on all of our suppliers and products that we stock. The products we purchase for our website are the products which we take on a daily basis and that’s the way we would like to keep it!

It is also the reason we became a full member of the cannabis trade association (CTA). This ensures that we provide products which adhere to UK/EU laws and regulations and enables us to give you peace of mind.

CANNABIS OPERATION DISCOVERED IN ECCLESFIELD

THIS is the cannabis growing operation that police discovered in the Ecclesfield area on January 25 as the Parson Cross Team recovered over £15,000 in the Class B drug. A spokesperson for the team said: “Criminal groups involved in the growing of cannabis are often involved in other seri-

ous organised crime and don’t care about the harm their activity can cause to the most vulnerable people in our society and this can often include the persons who are forced into their respective activities. We target the right people for the right reasons at the right time.

“Should you have any information and intelligence regarding the use and distribution of drugs within your area then please feel free to contact us by following the below link which provides the necessary details https://www.police.uk/southyorkshire/KA/team/”

Healthy Active Stocksbridge As part of the ‘People Keeping Well’ framework, grants are available to help create opportunities and develop local activities that improve health and wellbeing across the People Keeping Well Partnership (PKW) covering Stocksbridge and the Upper Don. The concept of the community grant pot is ‘seed funding’ and there is no expectation that this will be recurrent funding or to deliver a ‘service’ nor is it restricted to existing PKW Community Partnership members. Funding is unrestricted and can be used for: equipment, to expand something, to start something new etc. Grants will normally be a maximum of £500 although amounts in excess of this may be approved in exceptional circumstances. Applications will, however, need to demonstrate that they support one or more of the following: 

Increased awareness of and involvement in community activities.

Increased uptake of volunteering opportunities.

Increased participation and awareness of the benefits of green space and physical activity.

Improved understanding of ways to live a healthy life.

Applications can come from ANY organised group (constituted or not) and can cover any costs. Application forms can be obtained from Sarah Knightley at pkwvolunteeringproject@gmail.com or phone 07800 923192 Completed forms to be returned to: Graham Helliwell, Bridge Shop, 25 Button Row, Sheffield S36 1GL. The Medal Centre have been asked to return to a number of local venues due to the huge response to the event held at this venue last time that they visited. One local resident was absolutely thrilled to accept a four figure sum for her small tin box containing her late Uncle’s medals for bravery during WW1 along with his campaign medals for service in the Boer War and WW1 and a small selection of gold and silver coins along with a small amount of broken gold jewellery. The lady said that not only was she astounded to discover how much her items were worth but the money could not have come at a better time due to the current financial situation and on top of all that she was delighted to be able to help local ex-servicemen and women.

There has never been a better time to sell your inherited collectable items as, due to The Medal Centre’s vast client base, they are able to offer the best possible prices and The Medal Centre’s proprietor Mr Andrew Jukes was recently quoted as saying, “We are now able to pay exceptionally high prices for all medals from a single item to a complete collection”. Prices for this type of item are at an all time high and people are often surprised how much some of the associated items such as cloth and metal badges or items of uniform, paperwork and photographs can enhance the value of a group of medals.

He also made a point of saying how pleased he is that he now has a new in house expert on philately and stamps and he would now welcome the offer of mint condition British stamps including presentation packs and stamp collections. It is also a good way to help your local community as The Medal Centre will be giving a donation to local ex-service charities for every item they are able to purchase on the day. Your Letters Prescriptions Dear Editor, Earlier this month I had occasion to have my quarterly prescription from Boots Pharmacy at the Hallamshire Hospital delivered to my home, rather than me pick it up personally on the day of issue after my consultation as usual. Which arrived during the allotted time period on the specified day, but upon later on checking the contents, I found that whilst I’d the full three months main medication enclosed, I’d nevertheless only been sent one month’s supply of aspirin – thus leading one to wonder why.

Your Letters

Issue 1046

Upon calling into Boots Pharmacy in Fox Valley, Stocksbridge, seeking an explanation, I was told by the person I saw, that she had no idea why I had been sent less aspirin than prescribed; and that this branch was not a dispensing chemist and couldn’t fill a hospital prescription anyway even if it was. Hence I had no option really other than to go to the time and expense of visiting the Boots in the Hallamshire to seek redress.

decisions and instructions on prescriptions; a trend that appears to be being reflected in the behaviour of at least one other local pharmacy of late as well. Thereby begging the question as to whether or not such a practice is an initiative on the part of pharmacists in general, or just Boots at the Hallamshire in particular; or, is such behaviour the result of government diktat that is now being implemented without due warning? The basis for which is probably yet another example of pennywise pound foolish attempts to save money, which will only serve to transfer cost from hospitals on to GPs? Which will, as usual, end up with the poorest and hence least able to pay suffering as a result; counter to the founding ethos of the NHS?

Fortunately I arrived at a time when there wasn’t the usual long queue and hence quickly got to speak to someone who confessed to having no idea as to why I’d not received my full prescription, but nevertheless went off to consult someone who would. Only to shortly return with the explanation that it was now policy not to prescribe medications that were readily available over the counter. Hence I’d been given my specialist main medication in full, but as for aspirin, this I would have to acquire for myself in future at my own expense; but I’d been provided with one month’s supply in order not to leave me short at short notice.

bidding round will vary, but for this round is just over ÂŁ28,000. A PB Task Group has been set up to oversee the process, not to decide who gets what (the voters do that), but rather to “policeâ€? the whole process, making sure everything is fair, deadlines adhered to and counting votes double checked. STC is in the minority on this Task Group. The date for the voting is Wednesday May 8, 6pm to 8pm in The Venue.

These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Childcare & Education Feature

Childcare & Education FINDING good quality childcare can be a difficult task for parents. There are lots of things to look out for and to remember to ask when you visit a childcare setting. How do you know if your child will be happy? Will they cater for your child’s needs? Do they provide feedback about how your child is doing? What if my child doesn’t like it? Draw up a shortlist of childcare providers using information from your local Family Information Service. Most childcare providers (including nurseries, childminders, children’s centres and extended school services) looking after children under the age of eight years usually have to be registered with Ofsted (the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills). Ofsted visits all registered childcare services and makes sure that standards are being met and that children are safe. You can check Ofsted’s grade and report for the childcare providers you are considering at www. ofsted.gov.uk. Book your child’s place and arrange details like hours, start date, and who is allowed to pick up your child. You may need to pay a retainer fee to keep the place open until your child starts. Your child may take some time to settle into any new childcare setting that you start them in, so allow them time to adjust to their new surroundings, especially if this is their first time in childcare. Most childcarers, such as childminders, will offer a ‘settling in period’, where you have an agreed length of time to assess whether the setting is the right one for your child and that they are happy there. BRING BALANCE TO YOUR LIFE WITH CRAFTS

IN our fast-paced world, with stress-related illness becoming more prevalent, it is increasingly important to maintain a healthy balance of work and life. If that balance includes any kind of crafting, there are additional benefits around keeping your hands and mind active. A recent study published by Knit for Peace, which reviewed previous research on the benefits of crafting, suggested that there were huge health benefits, including slowing down the onset of depression and distracting from chronic pain. Crafting helps to overcome social isolation by offering activities which can be undertaken with company, often into extreme old age.

A 2012 study by the Mayo Clinic into activities such as knitting, quilting and playing games found that those who engaged in crafting were thirty to fifty percent less likely to have mild cognitive impairment than those who did not. Crafting also lowers the heart rate, reducing blood pressure.

one-to-one specialist advice and support on a weekly basis. Every week they received additional templates and material. It was argued that quilting gave the women something to do with their hands, taught them a new skill, and had the added benefit of them making a gift for their new baby. Many crafting activities tend to be solitary, which is why it can be important to spend time with like-minded people undertaking your hobby. Most craft shops will offer knit and natter or “sew social sessions to encourage crafters to spend time together.

These findings suggest that an increase in crafting could also save the NHS money, as “a more resilient ageing population is happier and makes fewer demands on the NHS and is less Lisa Birkett of Happy dependent on care. Hare in Chapeltown A recent Sheffield initia- says: “We offer a numtive, Quilt to Quit, of- ber of social crafting fered pregnant smokers sessions throughout the a starter pack of quilt- week. There is a wide ing templates, fabric, range of people who atsewing thread, needle tend, from young mothand easy-to-follow in- ers, to retired people, to structions. The women carers who want some were given an initial respite from their redemonstration of sew- sponsibilities in a weling techniques and then coming environment.

I can’t ever see a time when we won’t offer these kinds of session, as they are so important to our customers. One of my customers, who is a full-time carer, told me that we have saved her a fortune in therapy! Lisa said that she also feels that it’s important to encourage the next generation of crafters. “We do a lot of work with young people in our local community, organising classes in both hand sewing and using sewing machines. The kids tend to prefer machine sewing, because it means that things are finished more quickly. But there is a real benefit to slowing down and sewing something by hand. It feels more satisfying in a way. Hand sewing is also really portable. I recently flew to Dublin and took some English paper pieced patchwork to do on the flight. We just need to convince the kids that hand sewing can be fun too.

Crafters can also help local charities. Sheffield Hospitals Charity has a section on their website with patterns for things people can make. A recent newspaper article highlighted a project to make knitted and crochet octopus for older people and children going through hospitals. Lisa says, “Crafting for charity is great. A lot of our customers like to do things to keep themselves busy, but then don’t know what to do with everything they make. Donating their makes keeps them busy without filling their houses with things they don’t need. In the past eighteen months, my customers have donated over 700 octis, 550 preemie hats, a hundred incubator quilts, and 400 bonding hearts. All of these things have gone to people who really need them.

lows you to take control of a part of the clothing supply chain. If you have made it yourself, you know it hasn’t been made in a third world sweatshop. So, it doesn’t look as though crafting is going anywhere soon. There are real, demonstrable benefits to health, alongside the ethical benefits, which suggest that people will keep those sewing machines

going for many years to come. The new season of The Great British Sewing Bee is due to be broadcast on BBC2 from February 12. Happy Hare is based in Chapeltown, Sheffield. They offer a range of craft classes, many of which are suitable for beginners. They also offer activities for kids during the school holidays.

When the BBC announced early in 2017 that there were no plans to commission a new season of The Great British Sewing Bee, there were protests, with over 20000 signing an online petition. With average viewing numbers of over three million people per episode, sewing shops have reported a huge resurgence of interest in sewing every time a new series has aired. The BBC relented, and a new series is due to be broadcast shortly, with Joe Lycett replacing Claudia Winkleman as host. GSSB made people realise that they could make their own clothes, even with minimal sewing experience. A lot of people are now looking at how they live their lives, shopping more ethically, and sewing your own garments al-

GOLFERS BRAVE THE COLD FOR WINTER CUP STOCKSBRIDGE golfers are a hardy bunch and, with a slight lull in the cold weather, were back out on the course for round nine of the Winter Cup on January 26. The course conditions were excellent for the time of year and despite the snow and ice of the previous few days, players enjoyed a full 18 holes and greens. There is a distinct possibility that for the first time in many years, members will enjoy 18 holes and greens for the whole winter season. That is something that many other courses in the area cannot guarantee this year. 46 members braved the slightly milder temperature and strong

winds to play in the competition. The scoring was excellent, with half of the field scoring 36 points or better in the Stableford format. 36 points usually means that the player has played to their handicap, so well done all who managed this. M. Huckerby (17) prevailed on the day with 42 points and a clear winning margin of two points. M. Taylor (19) and J Leaning (18) were joint second on 40 points, separated by their back nine scores respectively. S. Hill (12) came in fourth with 39 points, the same score as two others, but with the better back nine.

The Winter Cup will run until March and ten leading players are all bunched within a few points of each other. Players add to their aggregate total with any scores of 31 points or better contributing to their overall position. It all makes for an exciting last few weeks of the competition. The Dragons section were less fortunate with the weather this week, catching the back end of the snow and ice on January 23. They have their collective fingers and toes crossed that the Dragons mid-week Winter Cup will resume next week.

Cooke takes win at Meltham and juniors shine PENISTONE runners were spread across a variety of running disciplines over the weekend. Some took to the roads and fells whilst others took part in the Northern Cross Country Championships held at Pontefract race course. Between them they set four new club records and achieved podium positions in one event each including a win for Flynn in the High Jump. Gareth Cooke who took first place at the very hilly Meltham Tough 10k. The runners had to battle strong winds as well as the tough gradients. OWLERTON TO STAGE HUGE SPEEDWAY EVENT

SHEFFIELD bosses are ‘proud and honoured’ to be staging the biggest individual event in Championship speedway racing again. Owlerton Stadium, which is in the process of gaining a plush new banqueting suite, will stage the Championship Riders’ Individual meeting on Sunday September 1. And it’s a move which underlines the high praise Owlerton has again received for hosting national events. Club co-promoter Damien Bates said: “It’s very pleasing for Sheffield because I think there are certain tracks which suit a type of event. “We will be working hard to promote this meeting because Owlerton does seem to be almost like the home of the individual meeting for the Championship. The atmosphere is always electric and

the rivalry within the pits is always intense.

STEELS LOSE TO LEAGUE LEADERS Stocksbridge Park Steels 0 – 4 Morpeth Town

By Dave Rhodes MORPETH Town provided the opposition at the Look Local Stadium on Saturday and showed why they are top of the league with a 4-0 win over Stocksbridge Steels. The 2016 FA Vase winners were big favourites coming into the game, but Steels were looking to build on an impressive away victory last time out.

Crampton & Moore

The early stages of the game were even as both teams tested each other with decent passages of play. Steels can feel unfortunate they were not awarded a penalty when Ruthven was held back in the box and Litchfields one-v-one was a golden chance to take the lead on 16 minutes after a great pass from Swinburn, with Dan Lowson, the away keeper, saving with his legs.

Under blustery conditions Morpeth now seemed to settle better and play, picking out pockets and avenues of attacking moves creating numerous opportunities to score. Steels held firm, looked compact and organised and again were a threat on the break, but a cruel blow on 37 minutes when a long ball from back to front found the home sides back four flat and Liam Henderson, Morpeth’s burly centre forward, was free to bear down on goal. Steels could consider themselves a bit unlucky when the dive at Henderson’s feet by Adam Kelsey was seen as a foul. The penalty was dispatched down the middle by the impressive David Carson. At just one goal down at the break, Steels were still it and with a low key

opening 10 minutes or so for both sides the game was there for either who wanted to take the initiative. But it was the away side who started to control proceedings with composed, intelligent movement and well drilled passing phases, that Steels found hard to compete against. On 55 minutes it was Carson who was allowed to run across the 18 yard box before firing a low cross shot that beat Kelsey’ right hand, nestling into the corner of the net. Two nil down and backs against the wall for Steels,Morpeth were now starting to show their class and exactly why they are top of the league. Joe Walton’s fine right wing cross found Henderson at the far post who didn’t miss the opportunity as he headed past the helpless Kelsey from close range. Steels were chasing shadows for the most part of the second half with limited chances to threaten Lowson the away keeper, but at least kept going to a man. With tired legs and tired minds, Steels couldn’t effect nor get close to a top drawer side as substitute Walton was left free to head home from a right wing corner eight yards out. The game ended with a 0-4 score line but as a learning curve for Steels’ younger players it was a priceless experience they can undoubtedly reflect on once the dusts settles. Steels are next at home to Pontefract Collieries on Saturday February 9 with a 3pm kick off.

CHURCH TAKE NARROW WIN PENISTONE Church left it late as they took a narrow 1-0 win away at Albion Sports, needing an 88th minute Kieran Ryan goal to take the three points. After a dominant second half against a resilient Albion Sports Church substitute Ryan scored the late winner. After the game Church manager Ian Richards commented: “Another excellent away performance followed by an excellent away result.

This afternoon’s result is as important as last week’s; it’s as big a win as last week. It’s probably not as high profile as the opposition we’re playing but it’s a tough place to come, Albion Sports, and they were inspired today defensively. “Their goalkeeper had an excellent game as Man of the Match for them. They defended well, particularly in the second half because we put them under siege.

“We got to the stage with me thinking it might not be our day. We’ve probably created more chances today than we did against Thackley away when we won five-nil, created more chances than we did last week against Hemsworth and it wasn’t going in. Sometimes it happens. We’d talked about not getting frustrated and not believing that one will come.”
