Stocksbridge man hailed for brave act A 24-YEAR-OLD Stocksbridge man was recognised for his bravery at a police awards event in London recently. Thomas Brearley, who came to the rescue of a man who had been stabbed, was hailed for his bravery at a glitzy ceremony on Tuesday October 30. His instinctive actions placed him in danger, but prevented the victim suffering further injury. In February 2017, Thomas was in the Spread Eagle pub in Penistone when he heard a commotion outside. Thomas told Look Local: “I saw two men trying to grab another man out of a car. I didn’t think about it, I just knew that I had to help. I ran over and knocked one of them over. The other one tried to attack me but I managed to get everyone into the pub until the police came. He

was stabbed twice in the back. “It was nice to receive the award and it was a good opportunity to go to London.” Thomas received a gold medal for his bravery at The National Police Chiefs’ Council’s (NPCC) annual Police Public Bravery Awards. Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police, Stephen Watson, hosted the awards at a hotel in London. The ceremony was held to honour the brave members of the public who have placed themselves in dangerous situations, carrying out courageous and selfless acts to help protect others, defend their communities, prevent and detect crime and actively assist the police. Amongst this year’s award winners were people who risked and, in some cases, lost their lives while try-

ing to save others, people saving others from burning cars and homes, others foiling and detaining armed robbers, and people who stepped in to protect others from violent attacks. Chief Constable Watson explained why the awards are so important. “These courageous acts are a tribute to the spirit and determination demonstrated by the public, often involving decisions made with little or no regard for personal safety. They serve to reinforce Robert Peel’s adage that ‘The police are the public and the public are the police. “These annual awards do not exist to encourage people to place themselves in danger, but represent the opportunity to pay tribute to those in the community who consider themselves ordinary people, yet have performed truly extraordinary acts of bravery.”

A 23-year-old man has been sent to prison for three years after being found guilty of burglary, following a trial at Sheffield Crown Court. On Monday October 29, Joel Willott, of Woodthorpe Crescent, Sheffield, was found guilty of burglary. This followed a five-day trial. The court heard how at around 4.55pm on Friday April 13 of this year, Willott burgled a property in Warren Lane, Chapeltown.

One of the occupants caught Willott in the kitchen of the property. She shouted at him and he fled from the scene, carrying two handbags that contained credit cards, cash and other items. PC Dave Stacey said: “I am pleased that Willott has been convicted of this crime and is now spending time behind bars. “He was caught red-handed in the kitchen stealing property that wasn’t his. That discovery, finding someone in your own home, must be quite frightening, so I hope the victims in this case are reassured by the result.” Choose between: Traditional wardrobes in laminates, sculptured or real wood veneered doors, or space saving luxurious sliding system or combine for an elegant finish - beautiful, classical and modern.

THREE GENERATIONS FOR WINDOW COMPANY Call 0114 283 11 00

www.looklocal.org.uk

HISTORY

From humble beginnings, leaving school at I5 to start work as a tractor driver and general farm worker with wages of £20 per week back then in I975, I realised there must be more to life, so I went to work for the first double glazing company set up in the Sheffield area called Radiant Superglaze. After two years working there, learning all the skills, I decided to set up a business of my own, manufacturing double glazing in the old stables at The Coach and Horses pub in Stocksbridge. I soon moved into our existing premises on Manchester Road, Deepcar. The business quickly expanded through doing a good job, offering excellent customer service and value for money.

3 Generations: This year will be the 40th Anniversary

The company soon grew to a £2 million pound turnover that enabled me to buy my own factory and I won the Yorkshire Television Young Business Man ofthe Year Award back in I983. We are still going strong at our existing premises we bought in 1978, 40 years ago. We are a family run business, joined by my son ten years ago and hopefully his son will bejoining us in a few years time.

WHY ARE WE SO SUCCESSFUL?

I put that down to having old fashioned customer values, the customer is king at our firm, we stick to our old fashioned values, courtesy and customer service - we are customer friendly. Nothing is too much trouble for our customers. After all, it is the customer who pays our wages. When you contact us, you talk to a real person, not a computer, you don’t wait on the line trying to get through to a real person.

Latest products: Windows and doors

We are a forward looking company offering top quality ‘A’ Rated energy saving windows as standard. We are also introducing new products to satisfy our growing number of thousands of customers. 95% of our work is within a ten mile radius of Deepcar but we have travelled further on recommendation - as far as London, Liverpool, Scotland and even as far as the Isle of Man. We have thousands of satisfied customers. With our company, you get the old fashioned customer service with the most modern, up to date products. In fact, the Eurocell system we use is, without doubt, the best on the market. Ring now for a free quotation or call at our showroom to see the full range of products on display. We supply the best quality product fitted by our qualified installation engineers. We also have our own plasterer, brick layers and electrician, all qualified and professional.

IN September the Stocksbridge Town Council made a request for local residents to make a poppy as their own personal memorial to mark the centenary of the end of World War One.

The High Street Knitting Shop provided knitting and crochet patterns for people to follow. Poppies have also been made from bottle bottoms, felt, paper and pebbles. Local community groups, schools and toddler groups joined the project using the poppy making as a way for local children to learn about the wars and the role of the annual remembrance service and parade in the Town.

The Town Council have been overwhelmed by the positive response to this request. Many people have made several poppies and one resident, who is over 90 years of age, knitted over 300 poppies. As the poppies are a personal memorial there were no hard and fast rules as to how the poppies should be made.

The Town Council have installed the poppies on the Clock Tower

Gardens as a memorial to the fallen from the Town. The Mayor Cllr Julie Grocutt said: “Each year the Town holds a remembrance service and parade. As this year marks the centenary of the end of the first world war, we wanted to do something special to pay our respect for the sacrifice of local service men and women. “I would like to thank everyone who made a poppy and hope that local people will join the 11am service at the Clock Tower on Remembrance Sunday.’

Main building work completed at Valley Medical Centre

THE main building work has now been completed on the project to bring major improvements to the Valley Medical Centre in Stocksbridge. Work started in February this year and has been carried out in phases to minimise disruption to patients – the £680,000 project has transformed the look and feel of the building and created a much better environment for patients and staff as well as more space for the growing practice. Valley Medical Centre cares for 9,700 patients in the Stocksbridge and Deepcar area – the work at the practice undertaken by Henry Boot Construction has created an entrance area and lobby as well as allowing more space for the dental practice mydentist Stocksbridge. Internally the improvements have created three new clinical

rooms along with the fully refurbished waiting and reception area. Further internal improvements are also being introduced including a new call system and a community room.

work has been completed. We are continuing to develop other internal changes and upgrades at the practice in order to future proof our services for the benefits of our community.

The building is owned by Dransfield Properties, the company which developed, manages and owns the award winning Fox Valley in Stocksbridge.

“These will include a new patient call system and a community room. We have already received some lovely comments from our patients and visitors.”

The company’s development surveyor, Dave Hale, said: “It’s great to see the main building work now completed at Valley Medical Centre which has made such a huge difference in terms of the space and creating a lovely environment for patients and staff at the centre.”

A special opening event at the Valley Medical Centre is planned in the next few weeks once all the improvements have been completed.

Practice Manager Liz Sedgwick said: “The Medical Centre premises are greatly improved now that the main part of the modernisation and expansion

all coins & medals Medal experts visit Sheffield and South Yorkshire to help raise money for local ex-service charities

Dates for your diary COIN & MEDAL VALUATION ROADSHOWS BY THE MEDAL CENTRE

The week commencing Monday November 12th could be a fantastic opportunity for residents of Sheffield & South Yorkshire to beat the credit crunch and cash in on their inherited and unwanted medals.

ARE AT THE HEART OF YOUR COMMUNITY

As well as coins and all associated items or unwanted gold and silver items for this is the week that the team of experts from The Medal Centre will be running a week of specialist coin and medal valuation days in and around Sheffield & South Yorkshire with venues starting in High Green on Monday and then visiting the following locations during the rest of the week, Chapeltown, Stocksbridge, Wharncliffe Side, Oughtibridge and a final event in Grenoside on the Saturday.

EACH EVENT WILL RUN BETWEEN 9:30AM AND 4:30PM

Each of the specialists present are experts in their own chosen field and they will be on hand to give free verbal valuations on any inherited medals and military items as well as coins and banknotes and most other small collectibles. Including scrap gold and broken jewellery in any form but particularly gold coins such as sovereigns and kruggerands or gold watches and watch chains. Please remember that any one of the experts will be happy to make you an immediate on the spot cash offer for your unwanted items and they will be happy to offer the very best prices available and most people are delighted at the large amounts they are offered. This is because each of the valuers in attendance are members of respected trade organisations such as the Orders & Medals Research Society and The British Numismatic Trade Association.

The Medal Centre have been asked to return to a number of local venues due to the huge response to the event held at this venue last time that they visited. One local resident was absolutely thrilled to accept a four figure sum for her small tin box containing her late Uncle’s medals for bravery during WW1 along with his campaign medals for service in the Boer War and WW1 and a small selection of gold and silver coins along with a small amount of broken gold jewellery. The lady said that not only was she astounded to discover how much her items were worth but the money could not have come at a better time due to the current financial situation and on top of all that she was delighted to be able to help local ex-servicemen and women.

There has never been a better time to sell your inherited collectable items as, due to The Medal Centre’s vast client base, they are able to offer the best possible prices and The Medal Centre’s proprietor Mr Andrew Jukes was recently quoted as saying, “We are now able to pay exceptionally high prices for all medals from a single item to a complete collection”. Prices for this type of item are at an all time high and people are often surprised how much some of the associated items such as cloth and metal badges or items of uniform, paperwork and photographs can enhance the value of a group of medals.

Even items such as Military Pay-books or old Military Photographs will always be of interest to a genuine collector. Mr Jukes also commented that at the moment good quality English and Scottish banknotes are in very high demand and he is paying very high prices for such items. He also made a point of saying how pleased he is that he now has a new in house expert on philately and stamps and he would now welcome the offer of mint condition British stamps including presentation packs and stamp collections. It is also a good way to help your local community as The Medal Centre will be giving a donation to local ex-service charities for every item they are able to purchase on the day. However if you cannot attend on the day, one of the experts from The Medal Centre will be happy to call and see you at your convenience and they can be contacted on 01434 609 794 or 07950 421 704.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

It is general knowledge that the Remembrance Day commemorates the signing of the Armistice between the Allies and Germany at Compiègne, France. But rather than the 11am time slot we remember each year, the agreement had actually been signed six hours earlier at 5am. There was a unilateral promise that all hostilities on all fronts would stop at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month precisely, which is where we get our time from.

is less well known is that only the first minute is supposed to be held to remember the 20 million or so that died during that war. The second minute is there to think about those that had been left behind but deeply affected by the conflict. These would generally be the spouses, children and families of those that had perished.

There is some irony to this as it is reported that around 3,000 soldiers lost their lives on November 10 just 24 hours before the end. It is also recognised that officially the war didn’t actually end until June 28 1919 and the Treaty of Versailles. Whether a coincidence or not, this was exactly five years to the day after the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria – claimed by many to be the shot that started the Great War in the first place. The First Remembrance Day

Your Letters LEST WE FORGET – OR WE DIDN’T KNOW TO START WITH

The first Armistice Day or Remembrance Day was held at Buckingham Palace with King George V hosting a “Banquet in Honour of the President of the French Republic on the evening of November 10 1919. This was followed by the first official Armistice Day ceremony being held in the Buckingham Palace grounds the following morning on the 11th. A practise that set the precedent for future remembrance services for decades to come. Two Minutes Silence

At the 11th hour of the11th day of the 11th month 2018 it is 100 years since the agreed end of fighting of the First World War. And like many before us, we will look to observe the two minutes silence wearing my red poppy proudly as a symbol of respect to those that paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The concept of having a two minutes silence was a South African idea first proposed to Lord Milner by the South African, Sir Percy Fitzpatrick. Lord Milner was one of the most important members of David Lloyd George’s War Cabinet and this time for quiet reflection had already been adopted as But whilst we stand to remember the fallen, it is a practice in Cape Town from April 2018 where this story behind the Remembrance Day service a vigil was carried out monthly. Within weeks of and how it evolved after the ‘War to End All Wars’ this two minutes silence being publicised, the idea finished that is of particular interest 100 years on. had spread throughout the whole of the British Commonwealth as a way to honour and respect Armistice Day those that had made the ultimate sacrifice. The Story behind the Poppy as a symbol In 1915, after a harsh winter on the front, the Poppy was first main flower seen to grow in the war torn fields of ‘no-mans-land’ and around the many graves of the fallen soldiers. Its vibrant colour turned the fields blood red and had a major impact on the many that saw it. One man, an experienced Canadian Doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, a soldier, field surgeon and a war poet, was inspired by the sight that during the second battle of Ypres, in Belgium. He wrote the now famous war memorial poem “In Flanders Fields” which describes this vivid scene of poppies. It is said that at the time of writing the famous verse, he originally discarded it, but his colleagues encouraged him to send it into the press to be published and as a result, it first appeared in the Punch Magazine of December 8 1915. McCrae died of pneumonia on January 28 1918 and his body still remains in France to this day, but it was the vivid imagery of his poem that helped to inspire the use of Silk poppies as a symbol of remembrance in the UK. Championed by a Frenchwoman named Anna Guerin, as a member of the French YWCA, Anna was at the American Legion convention in 1920. Here she saw that the sale of a large number of artificial poppies in her home country, helped to fund any support needed for those still suffering the after effects of war, particularly orphaned children. Anna Guérin began production of fabric poppies and travelled the world encouraging countries to adopt the symbol. She made arrangements for the first nationwide distribution of poppies in America, working with American academic, Moina Michael, and saw the promotion of the poppy in Canada and the adoption of it by the Canadian League as well as New Zealand and Australia.

Bonfire thanks Deepcar Village Community Association would like to say a big thank you to all the volunteers who worked so hard to make the bonfire and firework display a great success and especially the community who came out to support the event. We would also like to thank Stockbridge Town Council for the grant that helps to pay for the display. Thanks also for Scott from Globe Holidays for the use of his van and Ross the off duty fireman who attended to keep watch over the fire as safety is a great priority. We thank St John’s Ambulance for providing first aid cover. We are only a small committee and without the help of a few family and friends, Deepcar bonfire and firework display wouldn’t have taken place. For once the day was warm but the wind was very gusty, giving us loads of problems with the tent and setting fireworks up. Again all our efforts we had placed to prevent any ‘fly tipping’ was a success. With the wind conditions we increased the safety distance around the bonfire and had extra stewards continually monitoring the situation as it burned brightly. We amended the firework display slightly which again was appreciated with cheering and clapping. Most of us worked from 9am to nearly 10pm plus preparation and cleaning up afterwards. Safety is very important and we make sure we uphold all the guidelines that the Council require. Once again we would like to thank you all for your support. Sue Goosey, Secretary - Deepcar Village Community Association

STOCKSBRIDGE Parks Steels Reserves made it into the third round of the County Senior League cup with an accomplished performance against Kiveton Park FC.

It looked like the game would be goalless at the break until Steels were awarded a penalty with minutes to go which Townsend despatched with gusto.

Steels started the game well and were unlucky not to take an early lead when the referee deemed a Luke Townsend effort had not crossed the line.

Steels stayed on top in the second half and the impressive captain Shepherd produced a bit of magic to release Townsend to go on and get his and Steels second goal.

Hardly winter conditions, but with a blustery southerly breeze playing conditions were tough and scoring for all was difficult. 58 members competed, and P Westhead won with a highly respectable 37 points, beating S Haigh (who scored the same 37

Luke Webster then produced good footwork and the Kiveton keeper produced a good save to keep the scores level,

The away side came flying out of the blocks, totally dominated the opening exchange and should have scored when Chas Tunnard shot tamely at the keeper from six yards and Adam Thomas’ shot was saved superbly by the Crookes keeper. But they were dealt a blow after 10 minutes when they were reduced to 10 men after Evan

Watson was shown a straight red. Crookes took full advantage and 10 minutes later took the lead through an excellent Joel Putrkiss strike. Oughtibridge responded and continued to press and when Ollie Black quickly hit an equaliser with a superb strike it was nothing less than they deserved. Oughtibridge did have keeper Keiran Osbourne to thank for two outstanding saves but still looked like the team in total control.

The second half saw more of the same and War Memorial made light of their numerical disadvantage. Adam Thomas headed over from a yard out and Ross Brown fired over when he looked certain to score and those misses proved crucial as Crookes went back in front with a Matt Cowen penalty. Oughtibridge tried desperately to hit an equaliser and almost forced extra time when they hit the bar in last minute, but Crookes held on.

Ladies take a convincing win and Villa prevail in cup Rise Park Ladies 0-3 Oughtibridge WM Ladies OUGHTIBRIDGE War Memorial Ladies maintained their 100% record in the East Midlands Premier League with a convincing 3-0 win in Nottingham, the scoreline not really reflecting some excellent football.

Rise Park remained resolute throughout and played on the break but Oughtibridge’s back line and keeper Coran Wright snuffed everything out for an impressive clean sheet.

Lauren Turner broke the deadlock on 10 minutes, finishing off a flowing move and being set up by her strike partner Codi Melia.

This Sunday is a big one for the club with the Remembrance march from The Church of the Ascension to the ground at 11.45am followed by the service in front of the flag at 12 noon.

Her second came on the half hour with a neat finish in a goalmouth scramble. After the break Millie Kenyon smashed an effort against the bar before Turner was impeded as she rounded the keeper, with Kathryn Mudge slotting the penalty home on the hour.

The ground was gifted as a sports facility and war memorial in 1921 as a tribute to those who lost their lives in the First World War so it is a tremendous honour for the Ladies to be able to host Mansfield Town Ladies later in the day at 2pm. Everyone is welcome to all events.

Dronfield 1-2 High Green Villa FC AFTER struggling in recent weeks in league matches this was a welcome win in the County Senior League Cup for The Villa. Trailing 1-0 at the interval, Villa hit back and secured the

win with goals from Price and Jacobs. High Green Villa FC, who are members of The County Senior Premier League require a manager/coach.

The club has a long history and was established in 1938. Home matches are played at Thorncliffe St. George’s Park which is a FA Hub with facilities second to none. Interested parties please ring 07768 558098.

The agreement will enable students to gain valuable experience from Darren and learn from his experiences in the professional game, while gaining match day experience and regular support through College games.”

IT was two wins in a week for Penistone Church with a win in both the cup and the league.

Playing in the league on Saturday, Sam Scrivens hit a brace as Church took a comprehensive 4-0 win against Worksop Parramore. Jordan Coduri and Nathan Keightley were also on target.

Wins in league and cup for Church On October 31, they edged out FC Bolsover in the third round of the Toolstation NCEL League Cup with a 3-2 win away from home. Andy Ring and Nathan Keightley gave Church a 2-0 lead at the break. Although Jake Morrison pulled one back for Bolsover just after the break, Lewis Dickinson restored Church’s two-goal lead and they went on to win despite Jack Warwick pulling another back for the home side.

A proud Church manager, Ian Richards, said: “An exceptional performance today, I said previously that the two Liversedge games were the most complete performances but that’s outdone them. From the first minute to the last minute every single player was outstanding.”

STEELS STOP THE ROT Stocksbridge PS 1-0 Wisbech Town

By Dave Rhodes AFTER a two-week break Steels were back in action in the league against newly promoted Wisbech Town. There were home debuts for Reece Fielding and Mitchell Langton signed from Ossett United and Tadcaster respectively. It was blustery at Bracken Moor and the firm ground made it difficult for clean passing play as both teams cancelled each other out during a scrappy first half an hour or so. The first real opportunity for Steels was Litchfield’s tamely hit shot straight back at Daniel Swan, the away keeper, when he had made a hash of a clearance, hitting the ball straight at him when the goal was gaping. Wisbech were picking up second balls now and forced two corners on the bounce. It was Adam Millson who connected with a looping header that was easily dealt with, on the line by Grayson. Steels were guilty of trying to get forward too quickly, consequently giving the ball away too cheaply, but did start to get a foothold in the game as half time approached.

Steels started the second half with a little more intent and conviction but found a resilient Wisbech side tough to break down, indeed it was the away side who very nearly took the lead on the counter when Toby Hillard outmuscled Fielding, with only the goalkeeper to beat in a one v one situation, Greaves was out quickly and saved well on the edge of the area. The impressive Charlesworth was starting to pull a few strings for Steels as they pressed forward but Wisbech held firm. Wrong decisions in the final third was a problem for Steels as they struggled to probe forward effectively and a point for each team looked on the cards. New players in the team coupled with a rustiness through not playing was always going to impact on the overall performance and so it proved with little cohesion through the side really. But what a dramatic end to the game it was and if you are going to score a winning goal then with 90 minutes on the clock is about the best time to do it. A good interchange of play down the left by Langton and Ruthven saw a low drilled cross delivered from the by
