Gary Dean - Appeal KNIFE CRIME HORROR THE wife of Gary Dean, Caroline, issued a statement on Thursday September 20 to mark two weeks since the death of her husband.

Police have once again appealed for information.

The body of Silkstone Common man Gary Dean, aged 48, was found on Thursday September 6 at around 5.40pm.

A man has been charged after a double stabbing in Hillsborough left one man fighting for his life. Emergency services were called to Walkley Lane in Hillsborough at around 12.20am Sunday morning to reports two men had been stabbed.

24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and section 18 wounding. He remains in police custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Vicky Short, who is leading the investigation, said: “We do have someone in custody and our officers remain at the scene as enquiries continue.

Daniel Trotter, of Chadwick Road, Sheffield, appeared before Sheffield Magistrates’ Court charged with attempted murder, Section 18 wounding, supply of controlled drugs and possession of an offensive weapon.

“I would urge anyone who was in the Walkley Lane area on Saturday night, who saw or heard anything suspicious, to please get in touch on 101 quoting incident 16 of 23 September 2018.”

A 31-year-old-man remains in hospital in a lifethreatening condition, and a 29-year-old man has been discharged from hospital. A

Caroline said: “Gary loved the outdoors particularly the woods and countryside surrounding our home.

“He loved nothing more than being outside from morning and night cycling, running, walking dogs and pottering in the garden.

Gary was proud to be a member of Penistone Footpath Runners and was real team player. He had many friends and his death has shocked and saddened so many people beyond his immediate family.

“We shared so many happy times together. We had so much fun and we both lived life to the max. We were both looking forward to our future together and had so many plans. This has all been taken away.

“We are all haunted by the fact that his last moments of his life were so brutal and violent.

No one deserves to die like that, in a place they found so much peace.

All I ask is that anyone with any information, no matter how small, to please contact the police.”

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Whittaker said: “We know that Gary was found with significant injuries in a wooded area near to the Trans Pennine Trail, where we are carrying out further searches in a bid to identify further clues as to what might have transpired two weeks ago.

“I am grateful to the local community for their support of our inquiry, as well as Gary’s family who have been left distraught by this incident, but are displaying tremendous strength as we progress our enquiries.

“As part of our renewed appeal today, we have released this poster (pictured) that shows the distinctive red running top that Gary was wearing when he was last seen leaving his home address in Moorend Lane at around 7am that morning. He never returned home.

“While Gary was a keen runner and cyclist, we don’t believe he was going out for a run that morning as he was wearing trainers and beige cargo shorts with this red running top.

“We want to know as much as we can about Gary, his life and his movements in the days and hours leading up to his death. No matter how small or insignificant you believe your information might be, please pass it on to police. Everything we piece together brings us one step closer to understanding what happened and being able to give Gary’s family some answers.

Local lads skate park success

FATAL STABBING In a separate incident a man was fatally stabbed outside the cinema at Valley Centertainment, Sheffield.

Police have named the victim as 22-year-old Fahim Hersi from the Broomhall area.

Mr Hersi was assaulted at around 9.20pm on Friday 21 September.

He was taken to hospital where he sadly passed away.

A post-mortem has concluded that Mr Hersi died as a result of a single stab wound to the chest.

His family has asked that their privacy be respected at this difficult time.

Seven people were arrested immediately after the incident on suspicion of murder.

A 21-year-old Sheffield man remains in police custody.

Southey Green incident A 23-year-old Sheffield woman has been charged with section 18 wounding following an incident in the Southey Green area.

On Saturday 22 September officers were called to Kyle Crescent, to reports that a woman had received slash wounds to her neck during an altercation outside a property.

The determination of four teenagers from Grenoside was celebrated at the weekend, at the official opening of a brand new £60,000 skate and scoot park in their local area.

The victim, a 43-year-old woman, also from Southey Green, was taken to hospital where she remains in a serious but stable condition.

After six years of hard work, effort and fundraising, plus support from Sheffield City Council and funding from Sport England, the lads Lewis, Harry, Kiran and Jacob were joined on Saturday September by local MTB champion Steve Peat to test out the new ramps.

The Friends of Grenoside Park was established in 2012 after the four local lads identified and campaigned for vital improvements to be made to facilities in their local park.

The Friends group were supported by local councillors and staff at Sheffield City Council to raise money from local grants, fund raising events and donations to complete maintenance work, but more was needed to realise the young lads’ vision.

Lewis Deighton, now aged 20, started the campaign with his friends six years ago, he said: “The new facility is fantastic, better than we could have imagined.”

Kiran Bellamy said: “I am thrilled it’s come together like it has. We had to travel 40 minutes to the nearest decent bike track when I was growing up and from a quick sketch by my mate and some imagination from the rest of us, here we are six years later with this amazing new park. I hope young people in the surrounding areas make the most of it and have a lot of fun.”

Sport England’s Director of Property, Charles Johnston, said: “Sport England is delighted to help fund this new skate park which will enable young people to have a great time getting active. The four boys whose enthusiasm sparked the community campaign that led to its creation should feel very proud of their achievement.”

Steve Peat, former Downhill MTB World Champion and creator of the Steel City Downhill race in Grenoside Woods attended the opening event, joining young people on the ramps and signing boards, bikes, scooters and helmets as a lasting memory of the celebration.

The skate and scoot park was designed and built by local track experts from Bike Track who have decades of experience in the industry.

The park has been built on the old tennis courts opposite the bowling park and children’s play area and is open to people of all ages and abilities, all year round.

Man admits to killing a man in Barnsley town centre A 27-year-old man has admitted killing a man whose body was found in a South Yorkshire street.

Ricky Ramsden, of Dodworth Road, Barnsley, admitted manslaughter but denied murder at a hearing at Sheffield Crown Court.

Polish national Dawid Szubert, 38, was found dead on Eldon Street in Barnsley in June.

The prosecution did not accept his plea and he will face a murder trial on 3 December.

STOCKSBRIDGE Gymnastics Club has been running for 18 months. It started running classes from Stocksbridge High School but has recently expanded the classes to Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre.

From humble beginnings, leaving school at I5 to start work as a tractor driver and general farm worker with wages of £20 per week back then in I975, I realised there must be more to life, so I went to work for the first double glazing company set up in the Sheffield area called Radiant Superglaze.

Wentworth Castle Gardens to re-open to the public THE future of one of the country’s greatest 18th-century landscapes looks more secure following discussions between the National Trust, Barnsley Council and The Northern College. The three organisations are working together in order to secure the future of the Wentworth Castle Gardens with a view to it reopening in summer 2019.

Discussions have been ongoing between all three organisations since the site closed in April 2017. The reopening would see the gardens and parkland – the only Grade I listed park and garden in South Yorkshire – complement the cultural offer of museums and attractions in the region, and the National Trust intends to place the needs of the local community at the heart of the offer through a programme of events, activities, volunteering and employment.

Wentworth Castle Gardens was the home of Thomas Wentworth, whose ambitions for the site were brought to life in the 1740s. After falling into disrepair, it underwent significant investment and was opened to the public in 2007 by the Wentworth Castle and Stainborough Park Heritage Trust, with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and others.

The National Trust plans to enter into a 25-year lease that will see them bring their wealth of experience in managing and conserving historic places. Already in the region, the charity looks after the World Heritage

Site of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, Nostell, Hardwick Hall and Clumber Park.

Working collaboratively as plans develop, the National Trust, Barnsley Council and The Northern College will be liaising with the local community and there’ll be lots of opportunities to use the site, discover new ways to enjoy Wentworth Castle Gardens again and get involved.

All partners are keen to reopen the site as soon as possible, and in the meantime, work will be carried out by the National Trust to prepare the visitor facilities, including a new catering and retail offer alongside an improved car park ahead of opening. Recruitment of staff and volunteers will also begin, with several core roles within the staff team being open to applicants from today.

John Edwards, Chair of the Wentworth Castle and Stainborough Park Gardens Trust, said: “I am thrilled that the belief and hard work of the staff, the Garden’s many volunteers and my fellow trustees has come to this marvellous result. It has taken ten years to bring this treasure back to life and all who have helped deserve praise and thanks.

“We are so proud that this premier contribution to Barnsley’s rich heritage looks to be secured for everyone, both near and far, to enjoy.”

Yorkshire in bloom awards

Green Moor scoop Gold AT the recent Yorkshire in Bloom Awards held at York Racecourse on September 11, our local entrants were suitably rewarded for their efforts over the last year.

The most noteworthy achievement was by Team Green Moor, Category One Small Village. They received a Gold award and category winner to be followed by the judges’ discretionary awards of Best New Entry and then Best Village joint award.

In their overall impression, the judges commented: “This is an outstanding entry especially as it is its first year in the main competition. We were given a very warm welcome to this lovely little village up on the moors, on a beautiful summer day.

“The group is extremely well organised and has worked very hard to achieve great results by enhancing all that was good, and making, Green Moor an exceptional place in which to live.

“All planting was lovely with a good variety of sustainable and annual plants. It was all of a high standard which was an achievement in these difficult condi-

tions. There were many good gardens and floral displays illustrating the involvement of the whole village.

“The children’s play area was a good example of partnership working and appreciated by the users. There was colourful planting, sheep. butterflies and information boards.

There was pride in the heritage of the area with some lovely displays featuring agriculture as well as the natural landscape, the quarry, the story stones, the pump house and the old red phone box used as a library.

Throughout there were good information boards.

Team Green Moor would like to acknowledge the support they have received from a number of local sponsors, including the Hunshelf Parish Council, Bridge Community Fund, Rotary Club of Wortley and Deepcar Home Improvements Ltd and a number of private individuals.

In Cat E1 – the Young Peoples Award - Oxspring Primary School not only received a Gold but were judged to be the very best as category winners, from a total of 22 entries.

In Cat C6 - Parks, Gardens, Cemeteries and Public Buildings - Burncross Gateway Garden and High Green in Bloom Mortomley Park both achieved the highest level of Platinum.

The judge commended Burncross Action Team for undertaking such an ambitious project, converting a former highways depot into a wildflower and wildlife area. An important factor in gaining such an outstanding result was the number of schools involved from design to completion of the garden.

Lucinda Compton, of Newby Hall, Ripon, NorthYorkshire, presented Brenda Hind with a certificate and a plaque to be displayed at the garden recording the highest award in the Open Spaces category.

In Cat C7, RHS ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’, High Green in Bloom were judged as “Thriving” - just one from the top.

In Cat C10, Charitable Establishments, High Green Methodist Church received Gold and were joint category winners.

The floral displays at Sheffield’s Fox Valley shopping centre have received a prestigious Silver Gilt Award - second only to Gold.

Walking through time JOIN the organisers of Sheffield Walking Festival for a celebration of Sheffield's walking heritage in the surrounds of one of the city’s best walking destinations.

Taking place at Bradfield Village Hall from 11am until 5pm on Sunday September 30, Walking Through Time is set to be a day filled with displays, talks and live music provided by the many organisations and volunteers that play a part in bringing Sheffield Walking Festival to life each year.

In addition to the exhibition, you'll also get to learn more about the organisations involved in the Walking Festival and the valuable work they do in the region as they pitch up their own stalls for the day.

Exhibitors include Peak District National Park, Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership, Museums Sheffield, Bradfield Parish Archives, Woodhead Mountain Rescue, Moors for the Future, The Ramblers, Walkers Are Welcome at this FREE Open Day event,

Several of the festival’s dedicated historians will be delving into the archives to present an exhibition including maps, publications, film and slides to tell the story of Sheffield’s walking heritage over the last hundred years and more.

There’ll be a number of talks from knowledgeable and passionate speakers, plus live music throughout the day courtesy of five piece band Clarion Call and mixed folk group Cocklebread, with others still to be announced.

On display will also be some exclusive artefacts belonging to Sheffield walking pioneer GHB Ward, on special loan from Museums Sheffield.

Light refreshments will be available throughout the day. Like all the walks in the Sheffield Walking Festival this event is completely free to attend.

Birch Bashing Season

As the days get shorter, it’s the season for birch bashing on Wharncliffe Heathlands .

The Wharncliffe Heathlands Trust need volunteers on Sunday 30th September to help them stop birch saplings from taking over the heathland reserve.

Birch trees produce millions seeds every year and if saplings are left to grow the resulting trees would shade out the heather which is the most important plant in the heathland that supports many insects and birds, including the night flying nightjar in summer.

Every autumn the Trust organises works day to “bash” any birch which have grown too big to be controlled by the resident flock of sheep. Work days are a great opportunity to get some healthy exercise and experience the habitat management first hand.

Former Sheffield City Councillor for East Ecclesfield Colin Taylor recently completed the Great North Run to raise funds for the Rotherham based homeless charity Shiloh and raised £600 in sponsorship.

Colin, who recently moved to Rotherham and helps as a volunteer said, “This a fantastic charity who do so much good for those people in our community who are in desperate need. I am so pleased that I can contribute is a small way both

FLOODS, FAKE HISTORIES AND FLYING TEDDY BEARS FESTIVAL-GOERS in Stannington at the weekend were treated to stories inspired by sources as diverse as Robin of Loxley, Sheffield’s historic floods of 1864 and 2007, the Irish bardic tradition explained through the lyrics of Marc Bolan and a letter to the editor of The Star in Sheffield.

And, as always at Stannington Story Festival, the famous Flying Teddy Bears proved to be a major highlight of the day.

Since Stannington Library was taken out of local authority control four years ago, the volunteers now in charge have staged the Stannington Story Festival each September to mark the anniversary of the change.

After a cloudburst that broke part way through the 2017 event, this year’s dry weather was truly appreciated.

2018’s show opened with readings of stories written by local

schoolchildren in the library’s ‘Magic Words’ writing competition, and prizes that included trophies, book tokens and dragon pencils.

Other contributors included local storyteller Carmel Page with a tale of Robin of Loxley and the Pancake Surprise from her recently published Yorkshire Folk Tales for Children, whilst another local writer, Bob Mynors, told a story from his Fake Histories short story collection, also explaining how it had provoked complaint on the letters page of The Star in Sheffield.

Less controversially, Claire Watts and Mary O’Connell from Sheffield Lakeland Partnerships invited audience members to contribute stories of their own on topics including Sheffield’ famous floods of 1864 and 2007.

Local singer Cheryl Barrott delivered a fascinating talk on the Irish bardic tradition, using the

lyrics of Bolan as her examples.

Adrian Tissier, all the way from Buxton, closed the show with a traditional Russian tale in which a poor peasant woman managed to get the better of local officials.

Audience members young and old were all happy to participate in the Flying Teddy Bears story, catching them as they flew headlong from the stage, hugging them to give them strength and launching them on their flight back home.

Bob Mynors, who is the volunteer festival organiser as well as a contributor, said, “Stannington Story Festival is all about having fun. Stories are of course a large part of what libraries are about, and the festival is a way of taking stories to the people rather than waiting for them to come to us.”

Schools deadline COUNCIL leaders are urging families applying for their child’s secondary school to make sure they fill in their application forms before the closing date of October 31.

Whilst Sheffield families continue to have a better chance than most of accessing one of their preferred schools – over 96% in this year’s intake - there is no automatic entitlement to a place at the preferred or catchment school. Families are encouraged to name their catchment school as one of their preferences as places cannot be reserved for catchment pupils where a positive preference for this school has not been expressed.

Stannington Brass Band are enjoying double celebrations following their win and best soloist prize at the Dronfield Brass Band Festival at the weekend.

The entertainment contest organisers invited three bands to each perform a 20 minute programme.

Musical Director, Derek Renshaw, delivered a programme showcasing the versatility of the band from the opening Malaguena by Lecuona, with all the flare and excitement of a Spanish flamenco to the haunting and poinant solo, A Little Star Went Out, by Phillip Harper with a prize winning performance by flugel horn player Edward Knowles.

The band has a busy few weeks ahead with another entertainment contest at Bolsover on Sunday 30 September, a concert at the Lomas Hall, Stannington on 13 October and a performance of The Armed Man - A Mass for Peace, with the Waldershelf Singers at Sheffield Cathedral on 27 October.

Prepare your garden for winter The start of September marks the beginning of autumn, but before we head indoors for the winter it’s essential to give your garden some TLC to prepare it for the cold months ahead.

From clearing up fallen leaves that cause messy moss-covered turf, right down to cleaning your tools before packing them into the shed, there are some jobs that just can’t wait until next year.

To make these tasks easier you may need a helping hand.

Leaves in your borders can also cause problems, with snails and slugs gathering in the piles and your perennials can begin to rot.

Inspect trees and hedges Check your trees for broken branches and remove any you find by cutting them off close to the trunk. Depending on the thickness of the branches you can use either the 61cm hedge trimmer, which has a 90-degree rotating handle and hardened steel blades, or the brushless DC chainsaw, which has a no pull easy start button and reduced kickback. While you have the hedge trimmer out, neaten up any hedges in your garden ready for winter too.

Clean and put away tools Remember to clean your tools properly, especially if you have been using them on diseased plants. Once you have cleaned them, make sure they are fully dry and store them away for winter.

In three week’s time, work will start to fit two sets of handrails along the main paths in our very steep and hilly park to allow our older and infirm visitors access to the park and to our monthly free events.

the children’s playground and to get up to the bandstand area where our events are held.

“Some of our trustees, who walk their dogs in the park, have done verbal surveys over a number of months to ask what people thought about trying to get railings and dozens of people have said that railings would be brilliant.

A number of projects have been completed in the park since the Friends group obtained charity status in 2007. They include a natural children’s play area in 2012, CCTV for the play area, an outdoor gym in 2016, a pump track BMX track in the woodland in 2011 and improvements to the war memorial and signage.

College student skates to success BARNSLEY College Public Services student Yasmin Demircekic is setting her sights on competing in the National Ice Skating Association’s Oxford Open this October.

Yasmin is part of the Barnsley Sports Academy within College and has been able to access an Elite Sports Performance Bursary to fund aspects of her competition such as equipment and travel.

The 18-year-old took up figure skating after her mum took her to public sessions, where she recognised her love for the sport. After completing her level one to ten grades she developed a skater’s control and balance which demands lots of practice, patience and time.

Yasmin, of Royston, said: “My main focus is on improving my score and place in each competition. I regularly watch videos of figure skaters such as Ashley Wagner in order to improve my own skating.

I’m glad I found something I enjoy and would definitely recommend others to give it a go.

Yasmin will compete against some of the best figure skaters on the national circuit at the prestigious competition. Currently part of the Ice Sheffield Club, to prepare for the competition she has a gruelling training routine, with eight hours of sessions on the ice each week and strength training at the gym.

“The College understands the demands of ice skating and is always encouraging me to develop further. Barnsley Sports Academy has made me become more confident and helped fund aspects of an expensive sport through the College’s Elite Sport Bursary.

Mayne pipped at the line BIRDWELL Wheeler Trevor Mayne continued his fine late season form last weekend.

Last Sunday he travelled to St. Ives in Cambridgeshire for the LVRC (League of Veteran Racing Cyclists) 59 mile road race.

At half distance he managed to break free from the bunch and join another rider from a younger age group. The two then worked well together to keep a gap on the bunch and in the sprint finish Mayne was just pipped on the line but he was 1st in his age group.

The previous day he rode the Rutland CC Open 10 mile timetrial at Hatfield Woodhouse and recorded a time of 22m 05s.

Birdwell Wheelers club run on Sunday saw Robert Parkes, Philip Stewart Adams, Chris Jenkins, Steve Myatt and Austin D Watson ride a 75 mile round trip to Carlton near Snaith.

On paper the fixture was a chance to gain three points and to put pressure on the top six. In reality the game was far from an easy venture and three points were never there to be had as again the team didn’t perform to expectations, as an effective unit in most aspects of the game.

Julie Ward started training at Chapeltown Karate Club in 2013 with her 2 sons who have also attained their 1st Dan Black Belts under Sensei Gary Baker, their Mom Julie attained Black Belt in April this Year and since then has been guided to qualify as a Club Coach/Instructor which is Assessed by a Senior Instructor, I’m pleased to announce that in July, Julie passed her Assessment with Sensei Gary to become the Clubs first ever Fully Qualified Female Instructor, a Great achievement for someone who started a little later in life unlike her sons. Julie is now working at honing her skills towards progressing onto 2nd Dan in a couple of years as well as a Qualified Referee whilst still being a very active Club member.

Steels reserves are at home Wednesday 26th September v Swinton FC. Penistone Church FC 1-2 High Green Villa FC Newly promoted Villa visited Penistone for this local Premier League derby and opened the scoring mid-way through the first half through Vella with a well worked goal.

Parker in the Villa goal made a string of brilliant saves before Penistone equalised close to half time, which couldn’t come quick enough allowing Villa to reorganise.

In the second half both teams missed chances before Moorehouse scored what was the winner, from close range after a run and cross from Evans. With 20 minutes remaining Penistone pushed for the equaliser and a further string of saves by Parker, who was Man of the Match and the woodwork secured the points for Villa. Foster, Littlewood and Mossley worked hard in midfield with Burns outstanding in defence for Villa. Next Saturday Villa travel to the Look Local Stadium to play Stocksbridge (KO 3.00pm) for the second local derby in the week.

Harriet Drouin - Peak District Challenge 50km winner Many Penistone Footpath runners took part in the 3rd Silkstone Shuffle race of the year. The event which formed part of the club championship held a minutes silence, before starting, in memory of Gary Dean who uniquely had completed every single Silkstone Shuffle since it started. The first shuffle was in 2005 and Gary had completed 54 of them including winning the race on one occasion.

First Penistone runner home in 2714 was Scott Hinchliffe. To complete the Penistone double Laura Gill was first woman home in 34-16. Impressive 2nd place for Cooke in Hull Marathon

Gareth Cooke ran a pb of 2.33-00 in the Hull marathon to secure 2nd place on the podium. Jude Matthews also completed the Hull Marathon in a time of 4.12-47.

With leaders on the morning Wadsley Bridge Pheasant not playing, second placed and unbeaten Handsworth Old Crown could have gone top of the CBC Premier if they had won at Oughtibridge WM. However, Oughtibridge recorded a superb 5-2 home win and moved up to 3rd place in the table.

Despite the number of chances created by the home team in the first half, Oughtibridge only led by a single goal at the interval when Matt Harrison netted from Chas Tunnard pull back, Harrison then had a great chance to double the lead but shot wide before he had to come off with an injury. Liam Greenfield levelled matters but within minutes the home team regained the lead when Wilson Coupe was brought down after a great run inside the penalty area, Chas Tunnard made no mistake from the spot, Tunnard notched his second and Oughtibridge’s third with a great run and calm finish from outside the area. Strachan Sampson headed home the fourth after a superb move, an own goal reduced it back to 4-2 but the home side had the final say when a flowing move saw Harley Scholar who was returning from injury netted the fifth and decisive goal

Harriet triumphant at Peak District Challenge 50km Harriet Drouin claimed first woman in the Peak District Challenge 50km Ultra in a time of 7.18-00.

Penistone enjoy success on the track Three Penistone runners took part in a Yorkshire vets track event at Cleckheaton and came away with medals pbs and new club records. Results were: Lee Hopkins , Darren Mansell and I ventured over to Cleckheaton to take part in the YVAA track event.

It was a full on day, and Mr Keen (aka Lee) was gunning for some medals!

Lee took part in six events in total.

Church manager Ian Richards reflected after the game “The score line didn’t reflect the ninety minutes, it was quite an even game for seventy-five minutes, and I’ll say we had the better chances first half, both teams could have had a penalty but they were turned down by the ref We had better chances in the first half, Andy Ring, Nathan Keightley, Brett Lovell, and Tom Brennan all had good chances saved or cleared off the line.

We were pleased with the first half with our clean sheet, not really troubled, good shape to our play and we created chances.”

BOND BREAKS WOMBWELL Stocksbridge Park Steels reserves beat Wombwell 3-2 in a good game at Bracken Moor.Once again the reserves had to make changes ,captain Andy Dawson was missing due to him watching Parkgate FC where he is taking over as manager. Jordan Crofts was missing after dislocating his shoulder last week.The first half was at tight affair with both sides going close , seventeen year old Rodney Bruce broke the deadlock when he drove at the Wombwell defence and fired a left foot shot into the top corner .Webster and Townsend missed good chances to extend the lead.

Wombwell equalised just before half time to send the teams in level.

Julie Ward started training at Chapeltown Karate Club in 2013 with her 2 sons who have also attained their 1st Dan Black Belts under Sensei Gary Baker, their Mom Julie attained Black Belt in April this Year and since then has been guided to qualify as a Club Coach/Instructor which is Assessed by a Senior Instructor, I’m pleased to announce that in July, Julie passed her Assessment with Sensei Gary to become the Clubs first ever Fully Qualified Female Instructor, a Great achievement for someone who started a little later in life unlike her sons. Julie is now working at honing her skills towards progressing onto 2nd Dan in a couple of years as well as a Qualified Referee whilst still being a very active Club member.

Stocksbridge started strongly, and were on the front foot from the off, with skipper Ricky Rowett leading the way up front, well supported by Sam Whitaker and the hard working Reece Aspin.

Livewire scrum half Adam Frith, kept his pack moving forwards and the opponents guessing with his sniping around the breakdown area.

Good ball was presented for the backs to run, outside half Bowskill linked well with Paul Kelly who set jet heeled winger Ryan Smith on a race for the line and he was tackled just short of the try line. Fletcher won the resulting line out and the ball went wide to Liam O’Leary who was grounded illegally.

Bowskill was successful with the shot at goal and the visitors went into the lead.

Whilst Stocksbridge enjoyed most of the territory, a succession of penalties, much to the frustration of

the watching coaching staff, allowed Stanley off the hook and they were even able to register the first try of the afternoon, as their fly half glided almost unchallenged through some weak Stocksbridge defending to score under the posts.

The Stocksbridge back line looked dangerous and pacey, but they too often allowed their play to take them sideways instead of forwards, making them easier targets to defend against. As the pack rumbled forwards, Jones chased a Frith box kick and won possession, which was recycled to Frith who cut through several defenders like a hot knife through butter to score the first of 4 tries for the visitors, just too far out for Bowskill to convert.

Veteran play maker Ricky Christopherson broke the deadlock on 48 minutes with a deft pass to send Joe Jones scorching in for a try, touching down closer the posts to help with the conversion, which Bowskill nailed.

With O’Leary now operating at No 8, and Keenan, Joe Smith and Gary Woodcock forming a solid front row, Stocksbridge gradually gained more control, more possession and more territory through their forwards and this gave the backs more freedom to attack the flanks of the overworked home sides defence.

The rest of the first half saw more desperate defending from the home side, and a lack of accuracy and patience from Stocksbridge as the whistle blew with the Pigs just a nose in front at 8 pts to 7.

This week Stocksbridge Rugby are at home to unbeaten table toppers Ossett in a mouthwatering clash, with the winners claiming top spot in Division 4, the match kicks off at 3pm, entry is free and all are welcome. There will be a minutes silence before the match to pay respect to club stalwart Ken Gwylim who passed away recently.
