HIGH GREEN BOGUS CALLER JAILED

A HIGH Green woman has been jailed for 12 months after plaguing vulnerable people in High Green with bogus calls.

South Yorkshire Police warned residents in the High Green, Ecclesfield and Parson Cross areas

about a bogus caller and received numerous reports of a woman attending at addresses off vulnerable persons, proclaiming to be collecting for charities.

Following an investigation, Rebecca Taylor, 34, was arrested

and put before court for several offences.

On Tuesday September 18, she was sentenced to 12 months in prison and received a fine - payable upon her release.

Stocksbridge man charged after stabbing A STOCKSBRIDGE man has appeared in court charged in connection to a stabbing in a Sheffield nightclub.

At around 1am on Tuesday September 11, emergency services were called to Corporation nightclub on Milton Street, following a report that an 18-yearold man had been stabbed while inside the venue.

He was taken to hospital for treatment, where his condition was described as stable.

Rebecca Taylor, 34, faces 12 months in jail

Cornell Hirst-Johnson, 21, of Horner Close, Stocksbridge,

appeared before Sheffield Magistrate’s Court on Thursday September 13.

He was remanded and charged with wounding with intent and threatening a person with an offensive weapon, in connection to the incident.

Licensing officer, Sergeant Adam Wood, said: “There was a positive and swift response from Corporation staff following the incident and they took the decision to voluntarily close the premise immediately.

“Following on from today’s meeting and licencing check, they have agreed to put new conditions in place surrounding their search policy as well as the training of staff.

“This will include measures during the upcoming Freshers’ Week for university students.”

The club has reopened. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact 101 quoting incident 33 of 11 August 2018.

Memorial bench unveiled

THE Friends of Charlton Brook group held one of their regular work days on Sunday September 9, with the main activity being the installation of a memorial bench to former chair, and founder member, Sheila Constance, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

THE senior detective leading the investigation into the murder of Barnsley man Gary Dean is appealing for information one week on from his death.

and along the Trans Pennine Trail, on the day of his death we don’t believe he was out for a run, or out on his bike, due to the clothing he was wearing.

Mr Dean, 48, was found with significant injuries in a wooded area behind Moorend Lane, Silkstone Common, close to the Trans Pennine Trail, at around 5.40pm on Thursday September 6.

“He is described as wearing trainers, beige coloured cargo shorts with large pockets on the side and a bright red running top, that had a top half of red and a bottom half of black.

“We know that Gary left his home address on Moorend Lane on Thursday morning at around 7am, but sadly, he didn’t return home.

“While Gary was a keen runner and cyclist, and often cycled and ran around Silkstone Common

“The Trans Pennine Trail is regularly used by walkers, runners, cyclists, people walking their dog, or by those heading to school or work. Did you see Gary that Thursday morning?

“It’s vital that we speak to anyone who was in the area so we can piece together Gary’s movements between just before 7am last Thursday morning and 5.40pm when he was found in the woods, next to the small tunnel under the Trans Pennine Way.” A forensic post-mortem examination concluded that he died as a result of injuries sustained from a significant assault. Mr Dean’s family are continuing to receive support from officers and have asked that their privacy be respected at this incredibly difficult time.

Could you help at Christmas?

SOME of the volunteers, and the co-ordinator, at The Meeting Place at Christ Church, are planning a Christmas Day lunch for local people in the valley who would be alone on Christmas Day. There is already such an event in town for older people, so this event is aimed particularly at people under 65, but there will be all ages there, perhaps even one or two children if there are single parents alone in town on that day.

It will be on Christmas Day. It will be a full turkey dinner (with vegetarian option) and they are trying to make it a shared family-type day, where everyone joins in; not a silver service dinner where there are volunteers and diners. They expect to cater for about 60, including volunteers.

The event been generously supported by the Mayor’s Fund, the Churches Together Lent Lunches and they are expecting another grant from a local charity. All the people who come will also

pay a charge, so that they know they are a part of the event.

They are also hoping to be supported by donations in kind from some of the local businesses in the town, who will see this as a new enterprise for the whole town.

But before they get to that stage, they need to know that they have enough volunteers to make it work.

They will need some people to help prepare things on Christmas Eve, the Monday. On Christmas Day itself, Tuesday, they will need three people in the kitchen who feel comfortable cooking for 60 people, some washers up, more on reception, some helping to facilitate.

And because they will have access to two minibuses, they will need two drivers and two escorts. It may be that some will only be able to do half the day.

That would work, if they know.

So the organisers are now asking if there are few people in the Valley who could help, especially on

Christmas Day itself. Some may be people who would otherwise themselves be on their own on the day and would welcome the opportunity to do something to help others. They already have some volunteers, but they need more.

The group will be working through October and November with local organisations to help invite people who would like to come.

Rev Ian Lucraft, the minister at Christ Church said: “I am deeply touched by the idea that people will give up their time on Christmas Day to do this. It feels like a really appropriate thing to be doing on Christmas Day. “Lots of us will think it would be good to do this, but it takes a big push to make it happen.

This will be a significant addition to the community activities and support in the Valley if we can make a good go of it. Please think if you could help.”

DOG MESS MAN FACES FINE

A MAN who let his dog do its business in his back garden despite repeated warnings to clean up his act has been fined.

Mohammed Zaman’s dog mess was so sustained that it caused a statutory nuisance, Sheffield Magistrates’ Court heard this week.

Zaman, of Greenwood Road, High Green, Sheffield, was fined £500, costs of £579 were awarded to the Council, and a surcharge of £50 was

imposed, a total of £1,129 at Sheffield Magistrates Court.

The court heard that complaints had been received about the state of Mr Zaman’s garden for some time, and that officers from the Council’s Environmental Protection Service contacted him about the matter many times.

In October 2017 the issue because so serious that the council served an abatement notice.

Mr Zaman ignored the notice and allowed the amount of dog faeces to build up. He was prosecuted for failing to comply with the notice, after a visit in early 2018 revealed that the amount of dog poo had built up unacceptably.

Councillor Karen McGowan, Cabinet Assistant leading on the Clean Sheffield agenda, said: “The Council tries very hard to help residents to keep their land tidy. Situations like these can not only cause

problems to neighbours but also encourages rats and other health risks.

“We gave Mr Zaman many opportunities to comply but he didn’t and that’s why this ended up in court.

“We hope the substantial fine imposed sends a message out to all residents to keep their gardens tidy and reassures most responsible dog owners that we will take action against those who behave illegally.”

Band ‘unite the union’ between Sheffield and twin city

Crowds turn out for Cargo

MONDAY night was the first performance of the acclaimed musical presentation of Paul Field’s ‘Cargo’ in Stocksbridge.

It played to a full house of over 150 audience and over 40 cast and crew, followed by a second performance to another rapt house on Tuesday.

Cargo is about the abolition of the slave trade in the 19th century, but it is also about the existence of modern forms of slavery and challenges people to think about how it impacts their lives today.

Cargo includes stirring music, beautiful songs, dramatic action, narration and striking visual images.

It was a very moving production, and is a far cry from the pantomimes and other musical works often presented at Christ Church.

But while it is not full of laughs, it is full of meaning and impact. It includes parts about the work of the early Sheffield abolitionists, who were in the forefront of the movement and at its most radical edge.

The minister at Christ Church, Ian Lucraft, said: “We knew that this is a more demanding production, both for the cast and the audience, but we were thrilled that the people of Stocksbridge wanted to come and see it, and to share in the multi-media experience.

“There were also people from all over Sheffield in the audience to share in the experience. This is a real live issue for our world today, and many people said that they wanted to meet in the near future to think through how we can respond to the issue of slavery in our country today.”

A TIRED but happy Unite the Union Band returned home exhilarated by the fantastic ‘thumbs up’ given to them by the people of Bochum after their two performances at Bochumer Musiksommer 2018.

This massive spectacle now in its 12th year, is held in Sheffield’s twin town, Bochum, North Rhine Westfalia in Germany. Playing host to over 160,000 visitors to the city and with over 1000 artists appearing on several stages over the three days makes this one of the biggest Music Festivals in Germany.

The band received a special invitation to perform by Bochum Lord Mayor Oberbürgermeister Eiskirch and Bochum Council and given two prime time slots for performances on Saturday at 6pm and Sunday at 12 noon to open the show.

This year around 1,000 artists were engaged over three days, 127 concerts from classical to jazz to electronic music being presented on seven stages and other venues around the city.

A good luck video message, specially recorded by Mr Len McClusky, General Secretary of Unite the Union and sent to the band, acknowledged the fantastic opportunity for the band to represent the city of Sheffield and fly the Unite flag in front of tens of thousands of visitors to Bochumer Musiksommer.

“For the first time, after a long time, the twin cities have returned, Nordhausen with a concert choir and Lord Mayor Kai Buchmann, Sheffield with the Unite the Union Brass band. We want to revive the town twinning," said Oberbürgermeister Thomas Eiskirch at the opening in the evening.

Unite the Union Band’s performance on the main Moritz Fiege stage was very well received and soon the near capacity audience were swaying, clapping and dancing to the sounds of Sheffield’s own famous film and music artists and writers including Human League and Tony Christie, who himself lived for a time in the outskirts of Bochum.

Pre-recorded narration spoken in German cleverly done by the band linked their whole set together and finishing their performance with an arrangement of Oktoberfest and festival standard ‘Rock Mi,’ chart hit for German/Austrian group Voxxclub, was a real winner, now the party really was in full swing!

A chorus of “zugabe, zugabe (more, more)” from the thrilled audience echoed around the square as the band left the stage swamped by enthusiastic and animated congratulations from a waiting Oberbürgermeister Eiskirch himself, town councillors, marketing organisers and members of the public, many of whom returned to see the band perform again on Sunday.

It is hoped that the band will return to perform again at Bochumer Musiksommer next year.

THE eighth Thorpe Hesley and Scholes Village Show took place at Trinity Community Centre on Saturday September 15 and was a great success. Over 600 people attended this exciting event.

Wentworth Youth Theatre, Fitcamp and Kay France Zumba entertained everyone.

The dog show with classes including ‘dog most like its owner’ was again very popular.

The vegetable, fruit, flower, handicrafts, cookery and children’s classes made fantastic displays in the hall and church.

Trophies for the best entries were also presented.

Organisers would like to thank Pure Beauty, Morrisons, Tescos and individuals for donating raffle prizes. Raffle winners were R Hunt, A Smith, Baxter, K Scott, P Hore, M Hewitt and Foster.

Your Letters Walk for wildlife Our countryside has lost 44 million birds since 1966. It’s a staggering amount. When I think of when I used to walk from Green Moor over Hunshelf Bank to dancing class in Deepcar during the late 50s and early 60s, down a treeless grimy hillside surrounded by black stone walls, blanketed by smoke and smog, I can hardly believe it. But when I pause to think again, I can.

In these days at Green Moor the cuckoo would arrive in April and sing like clockwork in the Trunce until July. It was normal. Who has heard a cuckoo this year?

Blackbirds and thrushes would hop around together in the grass as common as muck. Who has seen a thrush this year?

Yellowhammers, linnets, greenfinch and chaffinch were commonly seen on walks in the woods and curlews, lapwings and skylarks on the hill tops.

Who has heard them?

House sparrows were so numerous at Hunshelf Hall that they were regarded as vermin.

They had their nests poked out of the guttering and were target practice for lads with pellet guns.

Where are they now?

Swallows would soar around the farmyard in squadrons, swooping down catching flies in the farmyard and nesting in the old buildings.

This year, only one pair of swallows returned to Hunshelf Hall.

My father, Charles Crossland, was born in 1912 and was brought up at Hill Top Farm. He told me that when he was a boy that corncrakes were commonly heard croaking in the long meadow grass in the corn, but nobody ever saw them. They were secretive.

Corncrakes became extinct on the British mainland after the second world war and because I was born after they’d gone. I never heard or missed them.

Is this what is going to happen to the next generation of young people who never hear a cuckoo or see a swallow or hear the dawn chorus in a woodland filled with songbirds?

Yet there is hope. It’s something we can all do and I’ve done it myself. When I came to live in this council bungalow, there was no garden, only grass.

The only birds that ever visited were crows and magpies.

A HISTORY OF THE HARVEST

A HARVEST festival is an annual celebration that occurs around the time of the main harvest of a given region.

Given the differences in climate and crops around the world, harvest festivals can be found at various times at different places. Harvest festivals typically feature feasting, both family and public, with foods that are drawn from crops that come to maturity around the time of the festival. Ample food and freedom from the necessity to work in the fields are two central features of harvest festivals: eating, merriment, contests, music and romance are common features of harvest festivals around the world.

In North America, Canada and the US each have their own Thanksgiving celebrations in October and November.

In Britain, thanks have been given for successful harvests since pagan times. Harvest festival is traditionally held on the Sunday near or of the Harvest Moon. This is the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox (22 or 23 September). The celebra-

tions on this day usually include singing hymns, praying, and decorating churches with baskets of fruit and food in the festival known as Harvest Festival, Harvest Home, Harvest Thanksgiving or Harvest Festival of Thanksgiving.

In British and English-Caribbean churches, chapels and schools, and some Canadian churches, people bring in produce from the garden, the allotment or farm. The food is often distributed among the poor and senior citizens of the local community, or used to raise funds for the church, or charity.

In the United States, many churches also bring in food from the garden or farm in order to celebrate the harvest.

The festival is set for a specific day and has become a national holiday known as Thanksgiving which falls on the fourth Thursday in November in the US and second Monday Of October, in Canada. It has also become a national secular holiday with religious origins, but in Britain it is both a Church festival giving thanks to God for the harvest and a more

secular festival remembered in schools.

Harvest festivals in Asia include the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋節), one of the most widely spread harvest festivals in the world. In Iran Mehrgan was celebrated in an extravagant style at Persepolis.

Not only was it the time for harvest, but it was also the time when the taxes were collected.

Visitors from different parts of the Persian Empire brought gifts for the king all contributing to a lively festival. In India, Makar Sankranti, Thai Pongal, Uttarayana, Lohri, and Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu in January, Holi in February–March, Vaisakhi in April and Onam in August–September are a few important harvest festivals.

Harvest is from the Old English word hærfest, meaning “autumn”. It then came to refer to the season for reaping and gathering grain and other grown products. The full moon nearest the autumnal equinox is called the harvest moon. Therefore, coinciding with ancient tradition, harvest festivals are traditionally held on or near the Sunday of the harvest moon.

There is a special relationship between the two oldestablished groups because of the tragedy in 1947 which took the lives of nine people when a coach carrying Bolsterstone members, relatives and friends to a music festival crashed at terrific speed in the centre of Holmfirth.

It was at Hade Edge, a small village above Holmfirth, that the coach’s brakes failed before hurtling down a long, winding hill for nearly two miles out of control.

The last time the choir and band shared the concert stage was on Armistic Day last year when the 70th anniversary of the crash was commemorated at Holmfirth Parish Church.

It was a memorable and moving evening and was the third occasion on which the choir and band had marked the dreadful event, also appearing together in concerts on the 40th and 50th anniversaries of the crash.

The two groups have performed together on other occasions, are both old-established (Hade Edge formed in 1907 and Bolsterstone in 1934) and are both thriving under two young musical directors, Jonathan Beatty at Hade Edge and Daniel Timmins at Bolsterstone.

Kelvin notches up 200th parkrun ON a morning of mixed emotions at Barnsley’s Locke Park a number of milestones were achieved.

Barnsley Parkrun celebrated its 400th event and three local runners, including Penistone’s Kelvin Bowskill completed their 200th parkrun.

Prior to the parkrun there was a minute’s applause for Penistone runner Gary Dean who had passed away the previous week.

First back on the day was Gareth Cooke whose run of personal bests continued with a time of 16-44 for the 5k event.

The latest round of the Penistone club championship saw some hardy runners head for the fells above Marsden for the Ian Roberts memorial fell race hosted by Holmfirth Harriers. Results for the Penistone runners were:

Ring man of the match as Church go a year unbeaten in the league at home Liversedge 0-2 Penistone Church A GOAL in each half saw Penistone Church beat Liversedge in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division on Saturday.

Danny Howes struck on the half hour mark and 15 minutes into the second half, Andy Ring secured the points with a goal that contributed to his Nick Firth Tiles Man of the Match award.

After the game, Church manager Ian Richards commented: “There’s been lots of positives today firstly it’s been one year unbeaten in the league, at home, which is a great achievement and a huge credit to the players, the club and everybody involved to have that level of consistency against top sides like Pontefract Collieries, AFC Mansfield and Pickering to go and to go undefeated for a year at home is a great achievement.

“We now have to go and see if we can do that for a season because your home form dictates where you finish in the league and if you’re realistic you can get in amongst the top six if you continue that.

“I’m really pleased with the positivity and attitude in the players during the preparation, probably the best one we’ve had in terms of how they went about

going to good habits and that was transferred into the game and I thought for 85 minutes of that game we controlled it.

“There was five minutes at the start of the second half when we could have been a little bit better, we got a little bit sloppy but for 85 minutes we completely controlled that game and limited them to shots from 25 yards or hopeful balls into the box and that’s really good defending as a team restricting space and opportunity to play the ball into dangerous areas and when you do that it gives you a platform and foundation to go and win football matches.

“It was Danny Howes’ great endeavour and desire to put the ball in the back of the net, he got the goal but it was good play leading to that and then we scored from a corner, a great header by Brett Lovell back across and Andy Ring got the goal that his performance today deserved.

“It’s a bit of a special mention really for the experienced players, I’ve always said I have the best four thirty-somethings in this league in terms of their attitude and commitment they never miss training they’re always there, their warm up, their consistency whether it’s a Tuesday

or Wednesday night, home or away, Saturday. Andy Ring lead the line brilliantly, I thought Ryan Johnson and Brett Lovell were superb as a central defensive pair, their communication, their partnership.

“I’m really pleased with the performances of the subs because they warmed up well. Tom Cadzow and Jordan Coduri came on in the first half and could apply themselves and then Nathan Keightley with his pace was unfortunate to get a one on one called off side in a close decision by the linesman. So I’m really pleased today and we just have to continue that next week.

“We have a week now when we can rest and recover, our physio Ruth Tomlinson did a brilliant job with Kieran Ryan and Ash Ellis last week so they could be fit for today and she’ll do the same with ice baths after the games today and she’ll see players in the week and credit goes to Ruth to get people on that pitch.

“It’s a good atmosphere and feel good factor and a great three points today.”

Brad Wells was unlucky not to score as his far post header scraped the post, but Steels held firm and saw out a thoroughly entertaining match.
